I hope this isn't answered elsewhere, I did search... Honest!
I debranded my Desire a while back. I haven't rooted it but I was keen to get to 2.2. The debranding went fine but when I wanted to install the 2.2 update, I had issues. Turns out that I needed to keep my goldcard in whilst updating from SD card (which I'm sure you all knew already...).
So basically, I just want to know whether I'll need to use a goldcard for all future OTA updates? I put it back in for the most recent update just to be safe but it'd be a nuisance to be doing this every time there's an OTA update.
Use a custom ROM. No, really

Yes, you will. I suggest making your day to day sdcard into a goldcard as well.
Why donĀ“t you want root ..?
its very simple with unrevoked

and also if you want original back..just flash a original ruu (and you can get official ota updates)
with kind regards..Alex
Moved to Q&A. Please don't post question threads in Development.
Sorry for posting in the wrong section. I was a bit unsure of the best place to post.
With regards to rooting, I'm so far very happy with the stock ROM and unless I see something that is too awesome to pass up that also requires root, I don't see a need to change. The less I flash it, the less chance I have of making a mistake and bricking my phone, no matter how simple the process has become!
For the time being, at least, I will make my day to day card into a goldcard. Thanks so much for the info guys, I knew I could count on this forum for a fast and comprehensive answer. Sorry again about posting in the wrong place
^^ Exactly this
I rooted originally but have now gone back to stock as everything I want to do can be done on the stock ROM. All these 'Just root' posts are pointless as not everyone wants to...

Hey; I've decided that at some point I will end up rooting my phone, but I have a couple of questions if someone wouldn't mind answering them.
Firstly, does the bootloader change with every official update? If so, am I right in assuming it's better to stick with 0.75 / 0.8 - or will all future versions be usable once they're figured out?
Secondly, after debranding the phone, will all generic OTA updates be fine to use; or does it become a guinea pig situation where someone has to go first to see if anything has broken?
I ask because for the time being I just want to debrand my phone, but I don't want to get to a situation where it's impossible to root in the future.
Thanks!
Edit: Also, I hope this is in the right section. I would've posted it in development, but I assumed since I have nothing to add and only questions, it would be better suited here.
Some believe it's better to stay on HBOOT 0.75, I don't see why though. I'm using HBOOT 0.80 after upgrading the the stock 1.21.405.2 ROM (I've got an unbranded Desire) but you can still root it if you so wish - I've done so and am running an MCRr3 ROM currently...
As for the OTA updates, people have reported the recent update from 1.15.405.4 to 1.21.405.2 had stopped their WiFi working but there is now a fix in that you do the update with your Goldcard in your phone.
Hi- Got my phone rooted with Unrevoked3. I have not applied -s off. I have not updated the radio, flashed ROM, or changed kernel- just running stock. I have installed some root only apps and removed City ID, Twitter, and Peep.
So what should I do if the expected OTA update comes through?
Can I apply the update on a rooted phone? I believe from what I have read that I would have to unroot and revert to stock in the box.
Do I want to apply the update?
If I apply the update with -s on will I permanently lose root? (I have too much faith in the droid community and xda-dev to really believe this would be more than a temporary problem)
Thanks
This has nothing to do with Development. Should be in General.
You could lose root, that's why it's recommend to S-OFF if you want to keep root after an OTA update. If you really don't want to update, let one of the others upgrade before you so they can see whether or not it will break the unrevoked method of rooting.

Next time please use the search button. All these questions have been answered millions of times in other threads. Also note the in all capitals at the top of this section is "NO Q&A IN DEVELOPMENT"
If you have NO changes whatsoever except for obtaining root on stock and removing a few apps then yes it will ask if you want to apply OTA, then wipe your root capabilities and if you do then your chances of obtaining root after the 2.2 OTA is applied on s-on is still there, it will be minuscule.
Very sorry for posting in the wrong forum. Perhaps the moderator can move this post.
I'm probably being to worried about applying the s-off because it is permanent and voids the warranty. I certainly don't want to lose root permanently and maybe the Unrevoked team will add s- on anyway.
Thanks

No problem, just gets a bit annoying when all the new people keep doing it. All we can do is report the thread to be moved.
Anyway, yes it's rumored that the unrevoked team will have S-on soon enough. You shouldn't be too worried about voiding the warranty via the software. If anything actually goes wrong, just "accidently drop it" till it won't turn on
I figured the s-on would probably be added soon. I will take your advice and apply the Unrevoked forever. If I remember what I read I think I can just run the updated Unrevoked over my existing setup.
I suppose unless I flash an updated ROM I will receive the OTA request and should just ignore it or, maybe smarter to just update the radio and then flash a custom ROM.
Thanks for your advice......mm
I've used the search but frankly, the vBulletin search still sucks after all these years.
I rooted the phone following this guide. Now my phone says a system update is available.
Since I would like to install it (my phone is still 1.34, I think. The latest version should be 1.72, right?) and installing a stock update onto a S-OFF phone is highly inadvisable (I've read), how do I go about this?
I have Visionary installed but it says the phone does not appear rooted, even though it is (just checked).
I'm sure there have been others with similar questions and I just couldn't find the right thread. If so, please point me in the right direction.
Regards and thank you,

Why did you root your phone? There is no need to update your phone to the latest OTA update if you are wanting to install custom ROMs.
Because I was testing custom mods and wanted to go back to stock?

ahhh, I thought you had just rooted it. I updated the day after I received my new phone. I had problems with bluetooth (music wouldn't resume after ending phone calls) and wound up here on the XDA forums looking for answers. I ended up rooting my phone, installing CM6 and now CM7 and never looked back. There is no bluetooth switching problems using CM builds so I'm happy.
Found this:

Thanks, that looks interesting. Now the only question: Do I need my original CID? And if so, how do I find it now that the CID has been changed by gfree?
That link is about a procedure to restore the stock G2 ROM. Since you seem to have a DZ ROM, I'm not sure if you want to flash a G2 ROM (though the other bits might be useful).
The 1.72 OTA update has been rootable for some time now, so you can safely accept the update if you want. But it might be easier just to flash the 1.72 ROM in its entireity (you can get it from the dev forum).
With SuperCID and S-OFF you should have no problems flashing 1.72.

Really? Then I don't quite understand the stickied warning thread that says to never, ever attempt that.
Anyhow, I gave the Virtuous mod another go. Since it has sense and 1.72 I'm thinking of testing this one out a bit more, before I go flashing stock.
Thanks for the replies, though.
Hey all, new here to posting although use this site alot for the quick fix answers ive had in the past.
How ever decided i would try rooting my desire z as i was looking for that extra control over everything and to loose some of that bloatware just like many of you.
Only thing im having trouble with is actually getting a successful root, im not one to just ask without looking of course but in actual fact ive been at this since 11ish this morning (8hours ago) with no luck. Ive tried about 5 different methods (from xda users such as 'Aegishua' and 'gtrab' guides to a random google searchs also) to no luck at all. Had quite a fair few errors pop up during the process of trying but so far my DZ is still intact and working fine but with S-ON still.
Im not here to ask for someone to explain a fool proof way to root my phone i was just hoping that someone may b able to point me in the right direction of a guide that should hopefully bring some success.
I have an unbranded Desire Z running 2.2.1 (originally 2.2) on Vodafone UK. i could list software details but im hoping someone could either tell me i can't root it since the new security update in 2.2.1 or could pass on a link to a guide that may work for me.
Sorry to sound long winded but its been a day full of "wtf's" amungst other phrases so im just a little lost and confused
Thanks in advance
Matt
if you have adb working and are comfortable with it, use the wiki method..
do you know what firmware version you are? if you are 1.72 or above, you need to downgrade to 1.34 before you will be able to root successfully.
Check in dev section, there is something bout debranding and rooting for DZ and shows what newly one has issue, also you could try the xda wiki methond gfreev.05

Before trying to root you need to follow the step above. This is mainly the mistake people make when they try to root the Desire Z if your a new comer, this is words from the wise. Lol
Your firmware is probably 1.85 or something higher than 1.72 by the looks of things which just means you need to downgrade. But the complicated part is actually getting the downgrade to recognize your vodafone branded Desire Z's unique CID. That's where a goldcard comes in handy because it bypasses the CID check.
Anyways, all you need to do is make a goldcard to downgrade. If you get any errors then post the exact errors word for word if possible.
It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!

If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).

Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:

demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.
