ive been using the iphones since they came out but recently switched over to the g2 and it's been pretty awesome.
however, my friend is always bragging about how awesome having root on his n1 is and i could never get a direct answer out of him about what's so good about these custom roms.
anyone care to tell me?
Its one of the best put together rom out there. No offense to other devs. His kernel is pretty much built for speed and stableness (dont even think thats a word) and its awesome. You gotta read the log when the rom is finished and posted. A lot of great new features and makes the phone less dull.

In simple words. Cyanogenmod adds tons of features and options that make your phone completely customizable, and it's very stable when it's finished. On top of that, you can get the latest version of Android sometimes before the manufacturer has dropped the update. And if your phone stops getting official updates, you'll probably see the cyan team try to squeeze the latest onto it. G1 running 2.2, come on!
I've got a MyTouch 3G and a G1 running Cyanogen 6.0, 2.2. It's amazing and I was sad when I got the G2 that I missed my cyanogen.
Lol someone else asked cyanogen the exact thing.
@cyanogen sorry for my ignorance but why is cyanogen better than stock? Ive been meaning to look into it since i rooted my phone about 2 hours ago via twidroid
@xsil0 imagine if you took all those little things that bothered you about the phone, fixed them, and added a bunch of neat stuff. thats cm. about 1 hour ago via web in reply to xsil0

Stability.
stability, performance, and technical features that have the potential to increase customization and battery life.
I'm looking forward the most to being able to toggle 2g/3g without that apn bull**** - should expand my battery life significantly when my phone is in extended idle (@ work).
I have been wondering the same thing. I hear about it all the time. I think that I am going to give it a go. I am on the sprint EVO 4G
CYANOGENMOD is the best rom ever built for any device as it gives tons new features and looks really nice.
It consists of tweaks that make the phone actually faster.
You want to know the difference, try cyanogenmod and then try coming back to stock.I bet you will miss it!
Customizing features and simplicity are best on Cyanogen mod roms.
for me the best of CM is smoothness and overall performance . Its fast and naked, not that much of special features.
And yea If u r lookin for features check out PACman roms
Why this post here?
Hello xda world. I'm pretty decent with the rooting and flashing game, I find it the most fun seeing what everyone has put together, lemme tell ya, most of the ROMs are bada**. Some better than others, but I came across soem AOSP roms, I read about waht they are and all that good stuff, and based on the battery life of them, it seems unbelievable, and I want to try but I need to know a couple things from some folks higher up.
Number one: Is there any AOSP Rom that has all the features such as 4g and the mms problem fixed correctly?
Is it better than the non-aosp roms?
If the battery life that awesome? Can you go back to a non-aosp perfectly fine if you choose to switch back?
Just trying to have all the safety I can before I take this big step to the dark side lol. Thanks guys
Well, Cyanogen Mod 7 is the only AOSP ROM to include working 4G. I'm not sure about MMS. You can't put any Sense ROM features onto a AOSP ROM. AOSP roms give the advantage of Gingerbread and they are updated more frequently then Sense roms because they don't have to rely on HTC to make the changes. I don't see how this could ruin your battery or do anything lower than the software level, so you can go back perfectly fine.
To start, just make a nandroid backup before you flash and you will be able to restore to exactly as you have it now. Don't forget to back up your apps with titanium backup or something of that sort. Just make sure you don't try and restore system data from a sense rom on an aosp rom.
As for 4g, cm7 nightly #6 has 4g implemented. From the discussion on the cayanogen mod website it seems to be working fine. Can't test it myself because no 4g unfortunately. I haven't noticed any mms problem, for what its worth. Battery life is amazing on cm7 as well. The stock kernel is great! Plus there is always savaged Zen, also an amazing kernel.

The only AOSP ROMs I know of with 4G are CM7 (and its derivatives) and Salvage-Mod 1.0. I'm not sure what MMS problem you're talking about, but MMS should work fine on CM7, and I assume (so I may be wrong; haven't used it) Salvage-Mod.
Better is completely subjective. It might not have a feature you expect from Sense ROMs, and you may consider that "worse" than other ROMs, and someone who doesn't use that feature will consider it much better.
You can switch back and forth any time you want. Lots of people do it all the time. Just make sure to wipe completely before switching, and make sure you have a nandroid backup.
Good luck and have fun.
Also, even though it doesn't have 4G, and it has an issue with downloading sound through MMS, I recommend taking a look at MIUI. It has lots of cool features not in most other ROMs. Don't be put off by the iPhoneish looks when it first starts up. You can theme it very easily and make it look however you want. A lot of people have had very positive experiences with MIUI.
Yup, I would agree with ^^. Take a look at MIUI. Its a fantastic rom and very customizable. As stated already, there is no 4g, but that shouldn't keep you from giving it a whirl. I almost wonder if you are talking about the SMS size limits? Not sure, but you can always use something like Handcent for texting. There were some issues with sound and MMs previously, but I think those issues have been resolved.
There are four aosp roms for the evo that I know of.
First, everlov. I don't think its very popular and have never tried it. Gingerbread. No 4g or hdmi.
Then, there's miui. Popular, and fans are very dedicated. Android with the iphone look and feel but with added stuff. Sadly froyo based and no 4g or hdmi.
Salvage mod is completely stock nexus s gingerbread. Working 4g as well.
cyanogen(mod) 7 is the most popular aosp rom probably in android. working on like 20 phones. Insane customizability and functionality. Gingerbread. Only thing not working is h hdmi. Make sure to flash the nightly build instead if the rls1 if you want 4g and other new stuff. This is what I'm using now.
I hope this helps you make your decision.

Trust me you will like it. It's so much faster, and will easily double your memory which equals a very happy phone. I just flashed back to Fresh 3.5.0.1 to test out 4G and i've gotta say it's awesome. But now flashed back to CM and going back and fourth between Salvage. I like gingerbread and also no sense lol. Good luck
So I was wondering if anyone could lie out a few points of the differences or advantages between these 2 versions?
I've noticed a lot of GB ROM's are slower and a bit more "heavy" but that may just be due to them just coming out and still having a lot of work to be done with them to optimize them for speed and battery life.
As of now I'm perfectly happy with Froyo and see no reason to switch, but still would like to know what advantages Gingerbread brings to the table.
You need to try cm7.

With Gingerbread your screen has that awesome on/off animation.
I know gingerbread is supposed to have built-in VOIP calling with Google Voice. Does that work with CM7? If that did, I could totally reduce my calling plan!

hah agreed, I guess there isn't a whole lot significant about the gingerbread release, I may be sticking with Froyo for a while if that's the case.
Also I've actually tried out CM7 before (several weeks ago) when it was very first released.
The screen on/off was pretty cool for the first day or so, but it started to bug me after a while and I kinda wished there was a way to disable it.
The VOIP calling with google voice has been available on the incredible for a while now, or at least I thought it had been. I never used it because of what a pain it is to switch back off of google voice, not to mention you are required to have a 3G connection or else you're out of luck and your phone is useless.
There are a lot of optimizations made to the whole android framework form what I gathered reading the android dev blog. They were targetting UI responsiveness which is definitely an issue in android as compared to iOS. I know that all of that is definitely better from my brief play with CM7 but I think it still has a long way to go to be as good as I want it to be. I also kind of like the orange glow that appears when you scroll lists, its a subtle but nice improvement.

I'm not sure how GB roms could feel heavier/slower, especially with CM7. I'd agree with you if you were talking about sense because its a bit bloated.
I'd suggest try CM7 again, RC2 with Chad's latest 37.2 kernel. Give it time to sync up with Google then play around with it. I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Unless you are a super sense fan
P.S. you can turn off the screen animation in CM settings. In the display menu.

Alright I guess I'll be giving CM7 another go, cheers for the feedback.
Only reason why I haven't tried CM7 is no 720p recording, not complaining just stating. Maybe im being a stickler but I like to have all options on the roms I run.
I honestly have noticed any differences in speed or responsiveness. I have tried a few gingerbread roms not sure if its because they are in early stages or not, but so far it doesn't live up to the hype in my book.
If I am posting this, I'm probably pooping.
Is it just me or does CM7 have crazy good sound quality. And the bass is extremely good as well, used dsp manager to boost base and it sounds as close as I have heard to bose (but still not as good as the great bose)
There are some small things that have bothered me with Gingerbread... for example I miss the sense Camera.apk, and of course 720p. But I went back to things such as Sense and MIUI, and I couldn't last 24 hours on them. I was originally between Evervolv and OMGB... then I stuck with OMFGB. CM7 RC2.5 is what I'm running now, and may I say it's pretty amazing. But I am gonna have to try out the new OMGB 1.1.0 build tomorrow though
I guess it's just the overall feel of Gingerbread. Oh, and optimization and web browsing is quite a bit faster I have noticed.'

Are you saying the built in phone speaker sounds like BOSE? That I would believe
Anyway is the sound quality via BT and headphone jack actually better? This would be something that might interest me.
I found CM7 to work very well, even better than SkyRaider IMHO, however I LOVE what JuiceDefender does for my battery - and it's not compatible with Gingerbread. As soon as that is released, I will have a semi-tough descision to make.
Scott
Just switched to CM7 from warm Z and loving it (Pandora sounded like garbage). Very responsive to say the least, GB seems to be quite a treat.
BT tends to leave out a lot of bass, but you can help correct it by using DSP manager.
The kernel plays a bit part in this area as well, chad's incredikernel has some audio boosts (especially for the earpiece) that I like. I know the stock earpiece volume was formerly way too low in crowds or even moderately loud situations.

There's always AOSP ROMs you can try out... they're constantly updated and new ones are pushed out for you to try
Well, seems like sense is maxed out to potential which leaves GB and some really cool ports to play with. SalvageMod has some nightlies now like CM which are fun. I would suspect once another major OTA comes out, the ROM frequency will increase again. There are always themes and mods to play with too.

i read the downfall to cm is no 4g no gps.. 2 things i like to have.. well gps more then 4 g i am in CT 4g aint much around here
thing is, the latest official software for the Evo (3.70) came out in December, so besides ROM theming, there is not much to update in an OTA-based ...
but there's CM7 and all the other Gingerbread ROMs plus the ports from other devices, like the Desire Z-based ROMs, so even though maybe there's not as many ROMs coming out as a couple of months ago, there are enough new ones to try and help the flash-itch!
EDIT: btw, CM7 RC 3 and 4, plus the newest nightlies, and most other GB ROMs now include WiMax, and HDMI functionality with the TeamWin app... GPS, on the other hand, works perfectly for some, and it's iffy for others.. it's being worked on, and it's rumored that it should be fixed for the CM7-final release.

cool thing with some of the new GB ROMS is the theme manager built in. CM7 and Decks have it, others probably do too. GPS works fine. I was on elite I, II, and III forever, but got really bored with sense and didn't want it anymore.
A lot of the development has switched over to 2.3, you should try it. You'll be happy after the adjustment to AOSP, or just use Launcher PRO or ADW if you want some familiarity.
edit: is it me or has everything slowed down around here?
So I'm getting a new phone. Right now I have a Cliq 2, but I'm getting a new one in the next week.
Right now I'm trying to decide between this, the G2x, or the MT4GS.
I'm not trying to get you guys to tell me why I should get this phone over the others, I'd just like to know what this phone is like. What are the ups? The downs? How's the phones radio? Custom ROMs? Battery life? And anything else you feel might be good to know before I make a decision.
Thanks!

I like the screen size, battery is good for me, gets me through my 14hr day on one charge with the screen use between 3:30-4 hrs. The radio is great, i get good speeds and great audio quality on the phone. The ROM choices aren't great YET, but Juggernaut is perfect for me and as stable as can be with many features and tweaks.
some phones have the screen flaws, but its hardly noticeable unless you look for it. I would definitely recommend over the G2X, my previous phone, which I did not like. The MT4G slide my lady has and its a nice QWERTY phone, but the screen is too small for my liking. Also I find the battery better on this than my G2X fyi. You won't be upset with this phone, of that I am sure.
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?

Love the phone. Development is slow for phone. But phone is decent. Screen has bugs but overall nice phone great preformance with beastmod 2 4.0_

Yea i had the g2x good phone but the gs2 blows it out of the water with everything.....mt4gs isnt in this category really as it is just a laggy beast (my 8yr old had one) anyways the screen is beautiful, call quality is awesome, rom development is getting there hopefully miui soon and we have cm. Audio quality=loudest phone i ever owned
this phone is exceptional in every way except development. our development page is death

Some of you are saying the dev here are slow which I agree to. But have you guys gone over to some of the other phones' dev threads? Look at the Amaze...LOL
I'm just curious do you people know how long it takes to compile and check roms for bugs? I don' think so. Making sure the code is correct if you changed anything. If their is one wrong line of code it code affect all the performance in a rom or kernel which could take minutes to hours to fix.. There will be no aosp roms until the cm team does it unless someone wants to do all the work themselves. Which by the way we have official support from the cm team. There are tons of developers outside which probably have tons of roms and kernels which are never released to the public because they don't want their work to be stolen or they simply don't want to share their work.
Doing things from scratch is a lot harder than porting. All the other galaxy s2 devices have mainly ports since they are nearly identical. The ports came from the official galaxy s2 which those people had to do things from scratch. Making roms is extremely time consuming these developers have other devices they work on, jobs , and family. They are not getting paid for their services to deliver roms. Just for you to flash and then complain about bad battery life. Which is most of the time the users fault. I think we should be more Appreciative that we actually have developers willing to share their work with us.
I like this phone. It makes phone calls and allows me to send texts.

MT4GS: just no. The advantage of the g2x is OOB stock, and full cm support, plus wifi calling. It's a really awesome phone, and I would recommend it. GS2 is a really awesome phone but doesn't have full cm support yet.
