So, i rooted my EVO a long time ago with unrevoked 2, i believe, and i decided i didn't want to bother with roms and all that crap, so i decided to update to 2.2, but unfortunately after i download it and start the install, it stops about a third the way through of the install of froyo and gives me a error(triangle with a ! in it, little android guy next to it on the bottom right). I'm not exactly sure why this is happening, but i thought something was screwed up, so i decided to do a factory refresh after backing up all my stuff. Did so, and got same results, think i read it has something to do with the custom recovery added on with unrevoked? Well, can anyone help me get to straight up 2.2(new OTA for 30 fps fix as well), then root? I really just don't want to bother with ROM's right now. Thanks in advance for any help!
Oh and, after i get the error, it reboots fine after i pull out the battery.
It's a sticky in the development thread 3.28.651.5 I believe. Just flashed it, stock rooted Rom. To me seems a lot faster (I'm very picky haha) was running a stock rooted rom prior. Did NOT lose root. Must be fully rooted though (s-off) with unrevoked forever. Hope that helps. BTW do a search next time or someone will flame u

I am googling, xda, phandroid, htcevohacks and not finding any clear cut answer to this question: Can i root my evo running 1.32.651.6 (SD update)? i see there are ways to root with the new update 1.47........., so since i cant find any clear cut answers regarding 1.32.651.6 should i accept the update to 1.47.651.1? I am so confused some people say they have used toast method to root 1.32.651.6 and others who say that it is impossible, can someone please help me. Thank you
Regular simpleroot
I almost feel bad...all I saw was ".6" (Thinking it was referencing 2.2) and I was about to facepalm.
Some have had problems with the original simpleroot (I was one of them)...go here:

I was a total Android/Linux noob when I got the Evo. I came from WinMo and as far as modding goes, it felt like I went from Champ to Chump. Read, make mistakes, read some more, fix your mistakes, and learn. It doesn't get any better than that. Just remember, we are a community that is here to help, not do it for you.
Finally ROOTED!!
OK guys i have rooted my EVO thanks to u guys. I have installed Froyo DeOdexed RevE.1, I have downloaded rom manager from the market. Now do i always have to wipe every time i load a new rooted rom? Also do i have to go into the shell with evo connected to PC to get to the menu for wiping and loading roms? Do i also have to load the updated radios and wimax or do the rooted roms come with them already? Many thanks.

Wiping is advised when flashing a new ROM, unless you are upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM (or if the author says no-wipe is required). Wiping is almost always required if you are changing between different ROM.
You can enter recovery by turning phone off, pressing power + volume down, or booting into recovery from apps such as Rom Manager, Spare Parts, Quickboot.
I had rooted my phone a few months back and used Skyraiders 1.9b rom for a bit. After hearing about an ota coming out I decided to go back to the original stock rom by just using my nandroid backup. So today I get my OTA update and my phone gets stuck on the ! inside the triangle screen. I reboot and I am still on 2.1 and the old radio and can not get back to the OTA update. Any help?
2.1 Update-1
Baseband 1.00.03.04.06
Kernel 2.6.29-cc1c2268

I am guessing I need to get Clockwork Recovery off of my phone any tips on doing that? Did a search and came up with nothing.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Oops sorry.
Forget it I am just updating my rom through XDA. Was hoping to do the OTA, but this will work fine.
Actually you should have just let it sit. I know some have said in just a few minutes I had Froyo. Well it's longer than that, and it seemed to hang up on the green triangle with the phone image um twice? I want to say. I just got up and walked away before I touched it. I think you stopped it from updating. If it doesn't get repushed you may have to run the rom or update.zip that's going around.
I let it sit for 25 minutes. I thought that was alittle excessive. I downloaded from the XDA forums. All is good and I am loving froyo with my 720p video and my flash works with the camcorder! Nice!
So, about a month ago i smashed the screen on my phone, accidentally of course. I called Asurion, got a replacement phone. The box had no battery cover, kind of a small issue, but I paid $130 for a new phone, so I should get a freaking back plate. Called Asurion, got another replacement phone sent out, arrived the next day with everything in the box, minus the packing labels and manuals (I was wondering if they ever actually put everything into a box). Phone works great, its on 2.2, Build 1.22.531.8
Now I want to perm root my phone and put S-OFF like i had on my first one, so that I could put custom roms on it. I went through the guide I used on my first G2, do it flawlessly, I use volume down+power to turn on to check if S-OFF, and it wasn't. So wondering if I had done something wrong that hadn't bricked my phone, I repeated the guide again. Alas, S-OFF would not appear. Questioning the guide's files, i went here to XDA.
Again I followed the guide to a t, making sure everything was absolutely correct (the last thing I want is a bricked phone) and using the files on the site, the latest VisionARY, and Android Terminal Emulator (free in the market). Once again, upon checking the for S-OFF in the recovery boot, my phone was still S-ON. Disappointed i tried about 3 more times, everything was working like the guide explained, and every line was correct and double checked. Still no luck.
Now, I am frustrated and annoyed that this replacement phone will not allow me to S-OFF and perm root it... So, here I am asking, Has anyone had an issue with Assurion's replacement phones before? How can I fix this? Any feedback would be lovely. I would like to get my phone S-OFF and perm rooted.
Thanks in advance, if you need any more information, I will gladly give you it.
I need to bump :3
Use this guide instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
It's the most up to date and recommended guide.
Visionary has quite a high brick risk, so don't use it.

I cant download HTC sync when trying to set up the ADB as said by the guide you gave me... its simply not on the list
Its been forever since I did my dz, but doesn't gfree work anymore?

Here's a link to HTC sync software, which includes the drivers http://www.htc.com/nz/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1073&news_id=918
Gfree is the recommended method.

Thanks man! i will give your suggested method a go, even though, I question whether it is a method problem, or its just my phone is weird because its a replacement from Asurion
Hey! thanks a bunch, that way worked perfectly!
Glad it went well, enjoy your rooted phone!

Well there is one thing... Whenever i try to put a rom on, no matter what it is, whether its CM7 Stable build or Xboarder56 's 2.3.4 CM/stock rom, it gets stuck on the boot animation. It does the animation for a little while and then freezes, and then restarts... Any idea whats wrong?
Do you wipe data/factory reset and cache before flashing a rom?
Is it just on the first boot or every boot?
All roms will take a little extra time booting for the first time, and will probably need 2~3 reboots to settle into it.
I normally use Superwipe when flashing a new rom.

Yes i wipe, and every boot, it does not finish booting, i knew that they take a little longer the first time, but it was 15minutes of boot animation before i pulled out battery. it does not get passed the boot animation
That's very strange, I have no idea what could be causing it.
Might help to try talking to people in #cyanogenmod irc channel, or posting in the cyanogenmod forums.
Sorry I can't be more help.
-Nipqer
how do i install super wipe?
i downloaded the zip... then what?
Nvm, i figured it out.
superwiped, and installed Xboarder56's Mod
Worked like a charm, thank you so much!!!
I have looked around and am still not sure which way would be best to un-root my Evo 4g. Can I just use ( wipe data/factory reset ) then update my contacts thru asurion ? and reload the apps i want from the market ? right now i am in ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.05 ( it was originally rooted with unrevoked ) not unrevoked forever. I thought i would like to try the latest official build for a while. ( not looking forward to the sprint bloatware ) or would the easiest thing be to try and update to the latest ClockworkMod or some other build. Thanks for any info you might have.
Best way to unroot is to grab the unrevoked s-on tool. Flash that and run a ruu or grab a stock non rooted rom.

so i guess wipe data is really no good ?

Not really sure what you are asking here. A factory reset will NOT unroot you, it will just reset whatever rom you are on. And updating contacts through Asurion? Asurion is your insurance provider, they have nothing to do with contacts....

You don't have to unroot to do this, just flash a rooted stock rom. This way you stay rooted. If you unroot, and then update to the latest stock rom, it will be VERY difficult to re-root.

I think you need to read a LOT more about rooting before you proceed to do any more, you don't really seem to know what's going on. ClockworkMod is your recovery, which has nothing to do with your rom. Updating Clockwork will not update your rom, or unroot you.
LOL I guess you are right. A LOT more reading in my future.. Thanks though.
I guess I will go ahead with the idea to update to the newest rom. I thought because ClockworkMod gave me the option to " wipe data/factory reset. " it would set it to factory default, which I thought might be un-rooted.
Side note: Asurion also syncs my phone contacts. I had to use it once when my phone was lost. to update / sync the new phone. It worked very well. Google sync stopped working long ago. I get an error message every time.
But thanks again. that post was very helpful to point me in the right direction. and make me feel a little foolish LOL BE WELL

did you try setting up a new gmail account? or maybe jsut delete it on your phone and re-set it up.
not yet. but i will soon. ill let you know how it goes. I've read that it works for some and not for others. haven't found a lot of info directly from Google though. it seems they don't acknowledge the issue. but I am sure i'm not the only one experiencing the error message.
If you really like the new sprint os but hate the bloatware, why not use a rooted sprint rom that one of the devs has made, kind of exactly what sprint/htc gives you but minus the bloat!
Thanks I will. i'm very new to this, how do i go about getting the correct one ? as you can see from above. I have Alot more reading to do.
just did a search on the rom you are running. How do you like that one.
The Rom I am running is great! Just can't post the link to it in this forum due to forum rules. But the Rom I am running is similar to a stock rom, just not a stock rom of an evo 4g. It's ics os which stands for (ice cream sandwich) the new HTC os. Its the stock upgrade for most of their new phones such as the Samsung Galaxy SII. Evo 4g was left out, but due to the devs on this site and others the evo 4g will be just fine!
Edit: Well there is alot of reading and research involved. But for me the best kind of research is trial and error. I read up on certain roms that interest me that have key perks. Such as ICS (newer roms), or wimax enabled (4g enabled and typically on the older roms). Then I read up on peoples response to the roms, what issues they have had, how they have fixed them, how the developer has fixed them. And then after that I'll flash the roms and see how they run. Usually a day or two of use can tell you if you like it or not. Its like a car test drive!
That's Great. I will look around a little more. and get a new rom, I'll probably try the one you mentioned, ( found the link ) Hey, I really appreciate the info, I just need the time to screw around a little more. LOL. Be Well. I'll let ya know how it goes. It is pretty interesting.
Yes on the site you are currently on, there should be a few helpful tips on how to flash the roms and kernels properly. Good luck, also a bunch of great tips on the CM7 Wiki
I searched and couldn't find an answer to my specific situation but apoligize in advance if this is addressed. I really am new to this so don't want to screw something up.
Basically, if I am rooted with the current stock 4.3, can I take an OTA update? I don't mind losing root.
Background info:
I rooted a while ago, can't specifically but I recall it being a "one-click" method. I checked with root checker from the play store and it says I have root access. If I open SuperSU it tells me KNOX is detected and I know I never removed them so I think it's right. I am running L900VPUBMK4.
I hope 4.4 is released soon, so I'm really just preparing for that day. I need to do a factory reset in the next day or two anyways because my phone is acting up and I have a ton of junk on it anyways so I want a fresh start. I originally rooted to get wifi tethering working but that never worked out for me and I really don't need root at all.
Thanks in advance.
This should be asked under q&a but to answer your question yes you can but you will need the stock recovery installed and not CWM/Philz/TWRP

Thanks for the reply. Can this be moved to QA then?
So did I install a custom recovery to root? Is there a way to check? I've tried several varieties of volume +/- and power to try to boot into recovery but nothing happens.
I'm in the same boat as you, but I'm still running 4.1.2. I installed "CF Auto Root" so I could run "WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod". From what I remember it installed a different recovery as well. I'm trying to avoid completely erasing everything on my phone, I just wanna remove the root and nothing else, goto Setting, System Update, Update Firmware to whatever is the recent one available, then run CF Auto Root again. Is that not possible?
I've got MobileODIN installed on my phone, but I swear that over the years that the "standard" skill level has jumped 10 fold since my days of rooting Palm Treo's, my Samsung Epic, etc...there are so many [xxxx][xxxx][xx] box things that I'm COMPLETELY at a loss here.

I looked on my laptop and remember what I used. I used Kingo Android Root to do it. It didn't appear to work because I never got a "success" popup. But when I did a root check it says I have it.
How do I check if I have a custom recovery?
I'm with you M5James - very confusing. Even the "one-click" idiot proof method I used confused me. Different boxes to check that I have no idea as to what they mean.
I've rooted, installed ROM's and kernals, OC'd, custom baked my own ROM's using 7Zip, I tweaked my GF's phone so that she could use it here in the States and then while we were in Dubai as well, etc. Nowadays, when it comes to things like pushing through ADB (I have no clue what that even means, I've just heard it enough that it sticks lol), all the [xxx] before the title of the ROM, kernal, etc and I just become a dear in headlights. Lastnight I tried Googling random things on how to remove root easily and one mentioned using Superuser and just clicking the Unroot Complete icon, which I did. Running random apps says I've removed root, Market doesn't work anymore (I'd upgraded to the Lucky Patcher Market is where I'm guessing the problem is), yet even though I don't have root, I still can't get the OTA to push 4.3 to my phone. I don't even really care about having 4.3 because I'm fine w/ using 4.1.2 at the moment, I'm just sick of the random pushes to my phone asking me to update.
In regards to my Note II with just installing things like custom ROM's, I haven't wanted to do anything wild to it for fear of being like the days of when I had a custom Samsung Epic...worked great OC'd, but could never get battery stats to work right, then the phone would freak out and become laggy, I'd reboot and then suddenly the battery was dead. I just want a simple root, add root-only apps as needed like WiFi Tether, then continue on being a texting whore lol.
If you have rooted your epic and installed custom recovery all this should be pretty simple. All the info is here. Its to the point where rooting and unroofing can be down in probably under 10 mins. You have to read.

I read it all, but it's gotten to the point where it's overly technical sometimes. I get lost in jargon, acronyms, I liked it better when there were 5 REALLY good guys making ROM's that worked, not 30 people making their own variations in their basement, then it turns into a pissing match of who's got the latest, fastest, most battery efficient, you've gotta do this to do that, but don't do this if you want that (assuming I know WTF "that" is in the first place) otherwise you'll brick your phone (but you can maybe unbrick it this way), if you swallow this pill you'll get rid of one symptom but you'll get 15 other problems in it's place, etc...then I just say F'it and leave my phone the way it is lol
My wife has the note2, I have the s3 (both rooted, I'm running a custom rom). I think I'm gonna take her back to stock so so she can get the update, then I'll just flash a custom recovery and su zip. It'll give me a chance to clean up her phone.
Edit: thinking of using this
