Will ROM manager allow me to... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

.... install ROMs once, of course, I've rooted my phone?
I'm asking this because the process seems to be much easier than (a) download the zip file to pc; (b) transfer from pc to sd card; (c) do all the things required to flash the rom (phone in recovery, wipes, etc.)
So I was wondering if ROM manager allows you to do most of it, if not all, from your phone.
Thanks
Astro

yep
yes it will download rom in ur sd and go to rom manager >install from sd> select the one u want to flash..all done sit back and enjoy.

Alright man! That's my app then! Now I can root my phone and enjoy the fruits!
Thanks for your help avseq!
Astro

and can it help to restore the stock (official) ROM as well?
Thanks!

Well it can help you flash a stock or stock rooted rom, but in order to completely unroot(flash std. hboot, recovery and rom), you will need to run an ruu .exe file, which is coming directly from HTC. The file is run on your computer, while the phone is connected. There is also another way, but the point is, rom manager cant do this.

Root, now how is everything working? :D

Hi!
I'm gonna follow the tut on MoDaCo called "14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support"
However, when I have done that, I end up with a generic rom.. right?
So how would I get a custom ROM on my phone? I'm really now on this area and I've only had my Desire for two weeks now, but root access is already itching Anyway, what would some must-be things to do, after root?

The simplest way is to use ROM Manager from the Market and use option to flash ROM from SD card after you heve rooted your phone using Paul's method.

Oh, I thought it was harder to flash a custom ROM, isn't it impossible to do it while the phone is booted? I thought that /system access wasn't possible when the phone was booted...
Basically, once you are rooted you can download rom manager from the market. Find yourself a rom that you like from the dev section and download it then put it on your SD card,
Go into rom manager and select the option to install a rom from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The rom manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you. It's all very very easy now! I'd just suggest that you use the rom backup feature in it as some roms don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install etc. The backup is a nice fallback
Made a root stock restore! anyway what else should I do with my phone now, when it's rooted?
EDIT: Also how do I make my MicroSD compatibly with Apps2SD?

You need to create an 'ext' partition on the card. Normally 512mb. You do this via rom manager or recovery.
You will also need to install the Apps2SD zip ONLY if the rom you have currently flashed comes without Apps2SD installed into the rom.

You cannot run any EXT partitions on FroYo.

You can run the RUU from your PC while the phone is connected and then flash your chosen ROM without connecting to the PC via USB (safer) using ROM Manager.
Basically, once you are rooted you can download ROM Manager from the Marketplace. Find yourself a custom ROM that you like from the Android Development section and download it, then put it on the root of your SD card.
Open up ROM Manager and select the option to install a ROM from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The ROM Manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you.
I'd just suggest that you use the ROM backup feature in it also incase something goes wrong, e.g. ROMs don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install, or forget to partition your SD Card (if necessary) for example.

Root guide and rom manager?

Is there a basic guide for rooting the epic?
I've rooted my droid a while ago, and loved the rom manager...
is there rom manager support?
Yea there is man. Go to the development thread and one of the stickies is for the wiki development page. That will have the basics and link you to the needed pages with directions. The rom manager we use on epic is clockwork recovery rom manager. Its simple to use and easy to install. Read up though first.

problem backing up my current ROM
everytime I use ROM Manager to backup my current ROM it goes to Recovery and then when I reboot the phone nothing shows up my Manage and Restore backups in ROM Manager.
Any thoughts?
Bj
Use backup and restore within cwm, not rom manager.
But you should be able to do this from ROM manager, right?
and what is cwm, i'm new at all this
Rom manager sucks for the epic. You need to use a custom kernel to use rom manager. It won't flash cwm for you on stock kernel.
Bj do you have cwm installed? Clockwork mod is a custom recovery mod. You use to NAND backup, flash, partition, clear battery stats and mire. You can only install it from a pc.
Maybe I'm slow
Maybe I'm slow here.... walk me through this.
I rooted my phone.
I have ROM Manager, which does include cwm. I purchased the paid app for ROM manager, but nothing seems to work, when i try to back up my phone boots to recovery and nothing is saved. when I search for new roms none show up.
I'm using a mac at home, but i rooted my phone on my work pc.
Please help me be able to install custom roms (froyo). please define terms and provide links if possible.
Bj
You rooted your phone good but rom manager will not flash clockwork for you. It says it dies but it won't. The only way to get cwm is to run the one click root plus clockwork. If yo turn your phone off and hold power, camera, and volume down what does the text look like. If you see blue writing and like 4 options that is the stock recovery. If it's green with a good bit of options that is what you want for flashing roms. But the new version of cwm3 is out and that is orange writing. For flashing all you do is put the rom on the root of the sd card, boot into cwm, wipe cache, data, and dalvik three times each. Then go to install zip from sd card, choose zip, and scroll till you find the rom on the sd card and hit the camera button to flash it.

Basically, do what he said. But, to run most of the Froyo ROMS, you need a DK-28 modem. Now, I'm not the one to provide the information to what that is, but all I know if that you need it.
Directions taken from BThomas22x (the maker of VIPEROM which is what I use):
As for use of Odin, It's actually a lot easier than it seems. I'll give you a quick runthrough.
1. Download and extract Odin, as well as the Modem and PIT files. (You DO NOT flash the ROM through Odin, The ROM is flashed through Clockwork.)
2. Open Odin. At this point, you have to put your phone in download mode. To do so, simply hold the number 1 on the keyboard, and the power button at the same time. Once in download mode, plug the USB cable into the phone. Only plug the phone in AFTER Odin is up and running or Odin won't pick up the phone.
3. Navigate to where you downloaded the modem and pit files and place the PIT file where it says "PIT" and the modem.bin file where it says "phone".
4. On the left side there is an options box. Make sure that "reboot" is the ONLY thing that's checked.
5. Now you're ready to flash the new modem. (Remember, the modem does NOT need to be downloaded, it's just a bonus feature) Hit start and allow it to run through it's process. When finished, the block above the port that your USB is showing will turn either green or red for pass or fail. At this point I haven't heard of anyone failing.
When Odin is done doing it's thing, it will automatically reboot the phone for you. Then you're setup with the new modem!

Head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864445 if you need more help/the download links don't work.
Now, that's the DK-28 modem. YOU NOW MUST USE ROMS WITH THE DK-28 MODEM! I'm pretty sure most of the 2.2 (Froyo) ROMs use DK-28, but someone might want to double check me. It's good to learn how to use Odin anyway since it's your way out if you brick your phone.
I think I was going to include something else, but I'm too tired to remember... lol. Just send me a PM if you need any more help and I'll get back to you later tomorrow or just keep posting here.

And also what is the best way to back up my current ROM now?
Forget ROM manager.
Get your roms from the dev forum.
Put them on your sdcard where you can find them.
Flash them with clockwork.
The best way to back up your current rom is to select "backup" from within clockworkmod. It will not, however, backup your kernel. The easiest way to restore a backup is to reflash the original rom, then advanced restore->restore data in cwm.
The only way to get cwm is to run the one click root plus clockwork.

That isn't the only way, but it is definitely the easiest if you aren't comfortable fiddling around with a command line on your phone.

Yes the one click will still work. It will check if you have root and skip the exploit when it isn't needed. It will then proceed to install busybox, the reidirector, and clockworkmod.
You can find the one-click version 2.5.5 in the dev forum. It is one of the stickies at the top of that forum.

Hi!
Welcome to the site! You'll really love the community here!
Here are some simple instructions I found for you: http://www.androidauthority.com/gal...elly-bean-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-preview-104742/
Just make sure you download the latest CWM from here (6.0.1.2 currently): http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-d2att.img
And flash it to your device.
Then follow those steps, wipe/format data partition, as it says there. CAREFUL make sure you download the latest CyanogenMod version from here too, the top one on the list is always newest, latest version came out today actually: http://get.cm/?device=d2att
Let me know how it goes and if you're enjoying it! Tried leaked version of JB on my S3 with Telus in Canada and didn't like the bugs in there...so let me know if the 'CM Finishing Touch' on there is really better than stock!

Yup! Start off with CWM Recovery flash, when that's done, transfer file to device (internal sd card) and from the ROGERS stock rom you can do the apply update from zip option in CWM.

If you get the SGS3 All-in-one toolkit from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488 , you can install CWM from it just make sure you have drivers installed, it can help you with that if you don't have them, and enable USB Debugging.
If that doesn't work, which I think it should, try to use this link a bit. Download the version they have it should be pretty recent.

Ill try it with the cwm from the superuser one but I remember doing that it said error 9 or something

I would've flashed CWM from ROM Manager, but the S3 wasn't on the list of devices. Is there anyway to get around this?

Hi there!
Basically you must first but the CWM ZIP file on your internal sdcard then boot into CWM, from there go to install zip file or something like that, then select from SD Card, find the zip, you're done!
Don't forget to do a factory reset through CWM before the CM10 update and maybe after too.
Let me how it goes,
Michael

Hi,
CWM = CWM Recovery; same thing just shorter .
The ZIP file for your rogers phone can be found here: http://get.cm/?device=d2att
Click the one at the top of the list as it is the newest.
Don't worry about the ROM because worst case scenario if you want to downgrade to stock, you can re-download it online and re-root.
For the apps, it depends where your backups are, usually, in TitBak, the backups are stored in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup which will be safe as formatting to factory settings and data partition in CWM doesn't format the internal or external SD Card. But I am not responsable if it does so be careful!

You can update it, I don't see what could go wrong because an update will only help fix things if there were bugs you had.

That would be with Odin you would redownload the Stock ROM for Rogers and then flash it. To reset counter, you can download the app TriangleAway for free from the Play Store and with root, it resets the counter. Then you can unroot.

[Q] Looking for simple Rom and Guide

Hi there,
my mother in law is pretty upset with her Gio. She complains that it always has slowdowns and there are to many useless apps on it.
Therefore I want to get her a Custom Rooted Rom.
She mainly does:
-Of course, telephone
-Use Whats App
-Use SMS
-Wants to use a E-Mail-Client
-Use the camera
-Listens to music
Therefore I am looking for a custom Rom which lets me delete all the Useless Roms and improves the speed and the battery life of her phone. If it has a better launcher design which is not as "boring" as the one on her phone this would be a huge plus.
She uses Android 2.3.6 which is not bounded to a provider.

If you wanna install Enhanced236 (the most bugfree one), you need to install install cwm, Clock Work Mod, first. How to:
1. Make sure that you have fully charged your battery.
2. You need to download the ext4only 5.0.2.0 cwm version, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650.
3. After you have downloaded the zip, you go into recovery mode, in this case stock recovering. You do that by holding The Home Button + Power Button until the recovery gets visible.
4. Then you do click on the Apply update from sdcard, and select the cwm zip.
5. After you have flashed the zip, you should reboot your device. Here's a YouTube video on the installation process: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxjxB8P9rSU
6. After you have done that, I recommend you to take a nandroid backup. The backup will be stored on your sdcard, so you can copy the backup to your computer if you want to, just in case.
Now you have installed CWM. Let's install the ROM!
7. Download the enhanced236 from this thread. Copy the zip to the root of your sd-card, and then go into CWM. Wipe data/factory reset. After that, wipe the cache partition. NOTE! This will erase everything you have done on your phone, so make sure that you have a backup ready! After that, click on the install zip from sd-card, choose the enhanced236_06.08.2012.zip and flash it. Just follow the instructions that pops up, and then restart your phone. Leave it booting/waiting for like 5 min, and then start touching/configure the device. After doing the necessary configuring, wait another minute. And reboot. And then it's done! Wohooooo.. :victory:
Hope you like your new custom ROM! And if you have any questions, just ask! I'm glad to help!

Have you tried to use the restore feature in ultimate backup tool?
Btw the enhanced236 is the most bugfree and stable rom, don't think you mother in law will notice anything.

[Q] Nothing in my phone

Hi,
I have installed CWM_RecoveryTOUCH_v6.0.3.0_N7100 for international version of Note2.
I formated my phone from recovery, my mistake I've also deleted system files including internal storage. Now, there is no ROM in my Phone. No Super User access to my Phone.
Can anyone suggest a procedure to fix this.
Thanks.
You need to flash a ROM from Odin, if there is nothing on your phone... Go to http://www.sammobile.com/ and download the ROM you want to flash and flash it via Odin from your PC... Then flash SU binary to root (also from Odin).... there are numerous threads how to flash ROM and root.
cheers,
D.
