Can Sprint blackball your bandwidth? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have no idea what is going on, but my 3G speeds have gone to ****. I've tried everything to get them back... I just don't get it...

How long ago were you getting good speeds? Because it could just be the Sprint network, because they have gotten a lot of new people because of the new phones to come out, and that could be the cause.

I've had my phone since Aug 11th... So almost a month and a half... My speeds have just got worse and worse as time has gone on... Maybe the network is overloaded, I don't know... but man it sucks.

Try rebooting. I was having that same issue some weeks back. I was hitting > 14.4kbps on 3g and 3.2mbps on 4g. I did a quick restart and 3g shot back up to 600ish kbps.

sometimes this is the case, not just the evo, but having to reboot the wife's hero also.

I notice that at night my speeds drop dramatically. I can play youtube vids in the day time without any stutter but once it's about 8pm the numbers on speedtest drop and I have constant buffering. I don't know if it's because everyone is home and bandwith is being used a little heavier or if sprint automatically drops the bandwith at night.

I've tried rebooting multiple times with no luck... looks like I'm either being capped or in high usage area...

your ping is pretty terrible too - did you try other servers?

My 3G got really bad right before the unofficial launch of 4G here. Not quite as low as what you show, but BAD compared to what it was.

Welcome to Sprint, mine is exactly the same. I can rarely get over 500 kbps at night but can usually get 1 mbps or better during the day. The weird one is that at night my upload speed is almost always higher then my download speeds.
Night before last I noticed my browser was unusually sluggish so I did a speed test. Download was 39 kbps upload was 150 kbps, did a test the following morning and it was 1101 kbps down and 550 kbps up.
This is in a very rural area, so I seriously doubt if the tower I am connecting to is getting overwhelmed with bandwidth usage.

Haha, I can hope my man...

Wow, yeah that's pretty bad. I am getting 960Kbps (1040 max) down and 88Kbps (158 max) up speed on one bar (-89dBm)... ran Speedtest right now to check what I'm getting.
Stuff might very well be congested over there, although one way to for-sure rule out bandwidth capping is are you doing anything to cause them to cap your bandwidth?

I'm consistently hitting right around 400 kbs down and 800 kbs up, the only time I hit higher is when I'm roaming then it's 1 mb down.

Not that I can think of.. I use my phone a lot, but it's not like I'm browsing torrents or anything... Most of my bandwidth is probably youtube and ROM downloads...

Does the rom you run have any affect on 3G speeds? I've been running CM6 forever though basically...

I'm on CM6, the 9/19 nightly I think (or 9/20 I can't remember). I don't think it has any affect on 3G speeds. I flashed the latest radio and PRI if that makes a difference (didn't notice one).

Anyone attains 1.8mbps or close with tytn??

This is strange, I know that the device's speed should be up to 1.8mbps...while I do a test in my place I only get 700-850 kilobits/sec never can go over 1mbit and when I am right under the tower sometimes I get 1mbit..
While I tried sierra ac860 aircard which is also capable attaining 1.8mbits it attains around 1.4-1.5mbit in my place...
I tried many diff Radio Roms but no luck... I guess the TYTN is not 1.8mbits capable if in the same exact place with two different devices I test..one gets very close speeds to specifications and the other gets less than half speed
Dude, remember that 1.8mbit is not only in laboratory conditions. Weather, location, your concrete walls all affect the speed. Your aircard just has a better more powerful antenna and as such better reception which translates to higher speeds.
Also the 1.8mbps is for raw data, not end user data. You are not just passing porn through that bandwith, you are also transporting the infrastructure for that data to be understood by your computer, like the data packets for example. So the connection will aways feel slower, even if you were hitting some higher numbers.

My aircard doesnt have an antenna thats sticking out...it could be compared pretty much to TYTN, and I am perfectly getting 1.5mbit with it through my concrete walls... FINE the overhead takes 300 kilobits... so all added up its ~ 1.8mbit... TYTN is not even performing close to it.
Im seeing around 1.1mbit/s with full reception, in uni that is...tethered to several masts i assume.
Most of the time i see useable around 600k...HSDPA and wnw+ rocks.
yeah, the most i get is about 1.1m in surrey. i dont get as much as this back in london
I get 1.4Mbit peaks (1.2 continuous) usable rate when inside my room (HSDPA and 2 signal bars, base station must be about 300m and a few walls away, both routed through WiFi or USB).
Pretty amazing stuff.

How do you test the speed?
the highest i've ever gotten to was 1.1mbps, that was with full signal.
1.1 to 1.2 is about usual.
i get pretty much 1.2 at work, at the house, its not even close but thats only cos i got a pretty weak signal.
tried differnt radios but none have really improved signal,
best two radios for me where 1.54.00.10 and 1.43 in the uk that is...

Simply download a big file. I was even running Bittorrent @ 140kB/s along with internet radio streaming at 16kB/sec the other day. I have friends who get less than that on their home internet connection
Here in holland i get with 3 signal bars 150 kb sec with downloading from newsgroups
Speedtest sites
Try these ones:
Magma Speedtest
Speedtest
DSLReports Speedtest
Hope it helps!

WOW..
i am barely getting anything over 600 kbs, on a side note when using magma.ca speedtest, i am consistently getting readings higher then when using speedtest.tmc.net...??
what could be the probable cause for this discrepancy..?
Discrepancies
Depends on distance and how overloaded their servers are. I find speedtest.magma.ca to be the most accurate for anything under 5mb.

to get a better idea, we should run the speed test 3 times (take the average) at a few different points during the day (morning, afternoon, evening, night?) in the same place, then take the overall average... this will give you a more accurate whole picture.
might be a good idea to put where you live in there as well.
using the above method (3 simultaneous tests, 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 evening, 1 night), my results are as follows... both radios were tested in the same location at the approximate same times a week apart. I'm in eastside seattle:
26.02.01.15:
DOWN: ~4.8mbps
UP: ~3.5mbps
26.06.04.27 (w/ updated lib files):
DOWN: ~5.4mbps
UP: ~3.9mbps
noticeable (not just placebo effect) decrease in browser loading times and GPS is much better for me. switching from towers seems to be quicker as well - my phone used to hang for 10-15 secs going from 3G to H, now it's almost instant even in the middle of communication. have been extremely happy with 26.06.02.27 so far... I may try some other radios just for testing, but I'm scared to screw up what is already a pretty solid setup.
You should also note that just because your phone has the "H" icon in the status bar, doesn't mean that you're on the "4G" network (which technically is HSPA+). The H can refer to HSUPA (instead of HSPA+), and it will often stay on H even when you're down on UMTS (3G). I don't even have HSPA+ "4G" in my area, being told that its on the way in the coming months, and H is lit up all the time, but its just HSUPA.
Something to think about.
That being said, I generally get about 1.9mbps down, 1.9mbps up on HSUPA. Stock radio.

I average between 4.5mb up to 8mb depending on data traffic and my uploads average around 2.5mb
I think most of it just has to do w/ the coverage in your particular area.
I get the "H" icon a lot at home, but my speeds are usually < 1 mb as you can see:

The most recent amazingly fast ones are taken at my work.
I'm getting an average of 4.2 Mbps using the stock radio.

Network speeds are affected by much more than simply your radio version or ROM type. See my post above for explanation of the "H" icon in your taskbar for a little look into that.
You can flash your radio independent of your ROM, some people get better performance with other radios, but I've gotten consistent performance with my stock radio and a few different ROMs.

Yes, you must be rooted to flash new radios. Unless you're having network issues, and you're happy with your speeds (I hope you are at avg 4.2mbps) then there's no need to be flashing different radios.

I only get 350kbs-1.5mbs download and 800kbs-1.5mbs up. The upload isn't the problem. The best download I have ever gotten was 2.2mbs in my area (with the H or 3G+ symbol and 3-4 bars). I did get 3.5mbs download once, but that was on the other side of town.
Just to clarify, when I said 4.2 mbs was my average, I meant my average at the moment. I did 3 tests.
Although, my average overall is usually about 2.5-3 mbs which is still good enough for me. Just hate when I randomly get Edge out of nowhere.
Best speed I ever recorded was 5.37mbs late in the afternoon a month ago or so.

Man I thought I lived in a **** town because I only saw 6.5mbps max when our phones are capable of easy double digits. Especially when I see some people having screenies showing cell speeds of like 9 or 13mbps. I guess I have nothing to ***** about.
Although I have found I can do just about anything I really need my phone to do if I have atleast 1.5.
I only get like 5mbps downloaded and 2mbps uploaded. I really dont think that the 4g network isnt completely up yet but the speeds are okay with me.

[Q] Charter 100mb and Nexus...something not right??

Ok, I have charters 100mb service at home with has a Belkin N150 router hooked up to it...I do lots of speed tests and rarely will I get over 25mb on my speed tests...Usually between 20-25. Shouldn't I be getting alot more than that? I realize I loose some speed going thru the router, but that much? Is there anything I can do to improve? Does this sound normal to you guys? Many thanks
P.S. The speed test numbers are done from my galaxy nexus

Usually its just my phone and my galaxy 10.1 tab, but they are never online at the same time.
I read somewhere on here that the wifi on the GNexus is not that great and wasn't all that fast, the LTE is usually faster. I may be wrong.
Do you live in a large apartment building with extremely crowded wifi channels? I know that my Gnex gets about 7 Mbps (36 Cable connection) on 2.4 GHz because it's so crowded. When I switch the router to 5 GHz it gets about 34 Mbps because those channels are empty.
I have 35/35 fios that actually hits 42/30 on the every single computer and laptop at home. I have NEVER gotten higher then 29 on my phone and like the OP I usually only get 20-25. Buff McBig (great name btw) What do get on speedtest with your phone on wifi can you post a screen?

Apparently I exaggerated because I can only average 29 or 30 and max at 32. That is with 3 devices all samsung. The others are gtab 10.1 and sprint gs2. My transformer prime can't connect to 5ghz.

every mobbile device is basically limited by its hardware, memory/cpu and throughput bottleneck. you cant get much higher than 30Mbps on the nexus as it's hitting hardware limits due to a mobile device.
thru the generations speedtest results have gone up though.

[Q] Terrible 3G speed and GPS doesn't lock (VZW), What can I do?

Well, pretty much I have tried hybrid 1 and 3 radio. I tried 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 radio. I have tried stock, Gummy, LiquidSmooth. I tried 3 different kernels.
What can else can I do? I bought this from a user on here and he swears they never had any issues and I completely believe him. I'm just wondering what is causing mine. I get about 50-150 KB/s speeds down and about 700-1000 KB/s upload... I don't understand the vast difference.. It has to be fixable.
Other than calling VZW, which I will do if I can't resolve this, what can I do?
Please help me oh great overlords of XDA!
For GPS signal lock, try updating your AGPS.
Download GPS Test
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&feature=nav_result
And go into options
"Clear AGPS"
and then I restart my phone (not sure if this makes a different but it's always a good idea to start clean)
then go back into the app and "Update AGPS"
This not only enabled me to get a lock but it also drastically decreased the time it took to get a lock.
Not sure about your 3G speed, maybe low signal which you can't really do anything about.
Hope this helps.

"Bars" don't mean anything. Look at your dBm reading and compare it to similar phones in the same area in terms of dBm and speed on the same network.

I understand that, and I was going to include the decibels, but she left for work before I could. Roughly, I'm getting 100 KB/s and she's getting 1-2 MB/s in the same exact spot of our house.
I will include the actual decibels when she gets home. Also, how do I find the decibels of an iPhone? Seemed like I couldn't find a good Google result last time I searched for it.
You'll be able to tell which phone is the iPhone and which phone is the Nexus. http://imgur.com/a/VSJvo#0
I had them side by side, and the iPhone was getting about -68 dBm while the Nexus was getting about -80 dBm.
Regardless of the decibels, the speed difference shouldn't be that vast.
Turned off mobile data and then turned it on again. It seemed to give me a boost of speed because I was about to get 1.3 MB/s, but a follow up speed test garnered a 150 KB/s speed. I can't seem to win right now. Apparently, it doesn't matter what radio I use because it will still occur..
Let's give this a quick love tap to the top.
No help?

Is Speedtest.net app accurate for Galaxy Nexus?

I just bought the galaxy nexus coming from sgs2 t989. After running speed tests, it says I have extremely low speeds over the air & wifi but when using the phone with data, it doesn't seem slower. Got 6gb/sec OTA & 12 wifi where on sgs2 12 gb/sec OTA & 20+ wifi....
Just wondering if anyone knows if speedtest.net app is accurate per your experiences?
Its as "accurate" as any speedtest can be. Its not exactly indicative of how fast data actually flows in real-world use.
Keep in mind that the T-Mo branded SGSII has a 42mbps HSPA+ radio, whereas the GNex has a 21mbps HSPA+ radio. Speeds will differ. As for WiFi, I'd say that's just a coincidence, speeds should be ~the same.
It seems to glitch sometimes with the GN and only measure DL speeds for a split second before stopping, I was able to fix it by changing servers though.
It should be 100% accurate. It's feeding you your actual speeds. It's just that HSPA+ isn't as consistent as LTE or other technologies. I usually get a consistent speed of about 20mbps with 2 bars outside.
Thanks for the input! Its as fast as I need it to be so I'm fine with what I am getting either way. Would be nice to be able to do some surgery & make a hybrid of the two phones tho... haha
The nexus def looks and operates much better than sgs2.

I noticed something similar. It jumped to about 3mbs which is sadly typical for the tower closest to my house, stayed there for about a second then dropped to 500kbs for the rest of the dl test, but in real use it is typical of my sgs2 which test around 3mbs

Has anyone else noticed that the bandwidth graphs (where it shows the spikes and how consistent the connection is) on both sides of the actual current bandwidth readout (near the bottom directly below the gauge) don't work most of the time? I'm not sure if it's an issue with ICS or what, but usually it's just a white blur that kind of moves around as the test runs. I've only actually seen the lines on the graph a few times since I've had my Nexus. Pretty sure it always worked good stock, but on most custom ROMs, it doesn't show the lines on the app. Sometimes it does, but not usually. I've played around with the options to see if it fixes it and it doesn't.
I see the graph every time. Turn off 2d hardware cause that breaks the speed test graph.

Yeah force hardware acceleration is known to break the speed test graph. But I guess that's not your issue if you didn't know about that setting in the first place.
