Sigh... At the RED TRIANGLE, press vol up and power.. reboot.
After applying the OTA on your phone, you need to reinstall the "superuser" app.
If downloading the one from the market and reinstalling doesn't work for you. Find your favorite recovery, reflash it, then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 and reflash the superuser app.
Enjoy,

Thanks, however to restore Superuser ability I actually had to run unrEVOked 3 again. (Even though I was still rooted with S-OFF) This gave me back my superuser rights. Now Rom manager is backing up my rom.
Credit for this goes to Punchatron for posting this: Use Unrevoked 3.21 again to get super user back as stated on http://twitter.com/unrevoked

That is one way to let unrevoked do it for you. All you really needed to do is reinstall your su app.
But glad you got it...

An alternate method to re running unrevoked is just reinstall clockwork and then superuser.

cannot install 3.29.651.5 update any ideas?

my phone couldn't update from 2.1 to 2.2 because i used the unrevoked method of rooting. in order for me to get 2.2 i updated my phone with the pc36img.zip file and then rooted again with unrevoked.
Now when i'm trying update from 2.2 with the new 3.29.651.5 update, the phone will have the triangle with a exclamation point.
Any ideas? thanks
You cant update to the new OTA with unrevoked forever. If you didn't use unrevoked forever, you will lose root access if you update it. You can flash a rom with the 3.29.651.5 update if you want.
thank you for the response, i didn't use unrevoked forever on my phone.
I'm trying to update to 3.29.651.5 with my unrevoked rooted 2.2 evo, but i get the triangle with the exclamation point. ideas?
Re-rooted, and grab yourself a custom rom from development section.

[Q] How to root the htc evo updated with ota 3.70

Hello All, I had my htc ovo rooted with unrevoked 3.22. After flashed it with the 3.70.651.1 rom, I lost root and clockwork recovery; S-OFF still shows though. Now I could not reroot it with unrevoked since it was stuck at "Waiting for root". I also tried to flash it with a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom (renamed to update.zip and booted from stock recovery mode (red triangle and !) without any success. After I pick install from sdcard/update.zip, it said something like "Signature is not verified. Aborted". Should I wait for an updated unrevoked 3.2# or there are some manual rooting using adb shell. Any advices will be much appreciated by me. Thank in advance.

That way doesn't work, at least from what I've seen. All over that thread are folks that can't get it working on their 3.70 EVOs
Not sure if this will work with your 3.70 builds....but since you say you still have S-OFF, you have to reload the custom recovery back onto your phone and the superuser app. There are instructions over at the unrevoked forever wiki page here. Under Reinstalling an official recovery page, you can find both Amon_RA and CWM PC36IMG files for download and link for superuser.

[Q] OTA fails with a red triangle

I have an unbranded T-Mobile Desire HD running 1.32 it has full root with S=off, CID is standard tmobile and the standard recovery – the rom is intact no apps have been removed.
I have downloaded the OTA 102 mb it verifies ok but on boot fails about 10% into the update. I guess it is verifying something before proceeding with the update. It fails with a red triangle centre screen with a red exclamation mark
Does anyone know why the update stops with a red warning triangle and I have to take the battery out to restart the phone.
Hi
I have the same problem but my DHD was never branded ,never rooted, i already did a factory reset no app was removed.
I also get the red triangle after that if push POWER + VOLUME UP i get Android system recovery screen
where i can see the following

Try deleting the OTA file from your sdcard and downloading it again, maybe it just didnt download properly, so some files are damaged.
@starfish. The ota won't work if your rooted. You have two options 1) ruu back to stock *no root* then apply the update but will be rootless 2) flash a rooted stock gingerbread Rom(my recommendation)
@night. The download my be corrupted. Try deleting it and download and apply the ota

Just to save everyone some time - nope, re-downloading won't work. If you've rooted you're phone, HTC has taken a rather cavalier attitude towards installing this update.
Still taking a bash at it, but for now the only dependable methods of getting this to work is either downloading and flashing a stock RUU, or downloading and flashing a ROM that's already got the 2.3 update installed.
Please note that, in either of these scenarios, you won't have root access anymore. So far, trying to root via Visionary on 2.3 hasn't been successful - fails on temproot. Haven't tried manually rooting it yet.
Also as noted on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084381
Be careful when reverting to factory default on 2.3 - there seems to be an option for clearing the SD Card as well.
I do have a couple of frozen apps - I'll unfreeze them and try again
but from what is said it seems that if I:
1 un-root 1.32 (using visionary) and leave s=off
2 then the update should install.
3 I can them use ginger-break to get root again and then perm root?

My error is the same as your yet I am root s-off
It seems that status 7 failures maybe a version mix issue - old nexus thread
Same as before. After you go through the steps and reboot, you will be at 2.3.2. Here is where things get interesting. It seems that you need another update. Its for people who get the “Status 7″ error.
This is mostly due to a firmware (those who have: GRH78C or GRH78). Here you will need to apply the LAST UPDATE, the same way you applied update1 and update2:
http://blog.vpetkov.net/2011/03/11/google-nexus-s-update-manually-to-2-3-1-2-3-2-and-2-3-3/
So I don't think this oto is gonna work

Starfish you can try this rom. Its the stock gingerbread update rooted.

OK after some reading and with starfish's link, I think night falls under the mixed version issues some people had on the nexus. Some people were not able to jump directly to the newest update (2.3 to 2.3.4). They had to update in steps. From your post you are on build 1.32. I think you need to jump up to the 1.7x/1.8x/1.9x ota before going up to gingerbread.
But thanks to andyharney you can ruu up gingerbread.
Here's is his link to the gingerbread ruu. Just rename it and.flash through hboot. This way though will erase everything so make.sure to back up stuff

There is no need to flash the RUU if you're on stock firmware and rooted (running clockworkmod that is). With little modifications to the update zip it can be flashed without problems and root will pertain. I've done it myself 10 days ago. I'll write up the guide for you in an hour or so.

Thanks...... are these prerooted?
The RUU has to be run from a windows machine. Renaming it will not work.
I do however have the OTA file on my site now. You can find that HERE.
Not sure if you have to rename it to update.zip or leave it as it is, but you flash it in bootloader/recovery.
Hi Starfish I had the same problem had to unroot and get S-OFF to get the 2.3 update via OTA. Now obviously have 2.3 Gingerbread but with unrooted and S-ON.
Your best bet is to flash with 2.3 RUU as you have S-OFF and then use Ginger break to root so then you will have 2.3 that's S-OFF and rooted still.

Hi all,

4.22.651.2 Will not show as available to download from sprint

I unrooted my phone with s-off and went back to stock 3.29.650.x and even tried 3.70.651.1 and they both say no updates are available. I even did a ##786# and no luck. I just wanted to have the ability to see that an update is available. I even tried to update the profile and prl and they both say no updates are available.

i am being cautious as sprint att and vzw can tell if you are rooted based if a rom update is pushed to you or not. I am wanting to make sure they get atleast one successful rom push and then I run the 3.29.651.5 RUU windows app to root again. and then down load what you suggested...
ok i unrooted again and then did the 3.70.651.1 update as pc36img.zip and then did a ##786# and then did a check update then it said none but i did the last option and it showed up. I will install then i will do the 3.29.651.5 ruu and then root and then do the rooted 4.22.651.2

##786# does that as it clears out the profile, and i did try that before to be told no update to profile and prl also
how to get it to work...
unroot
do s off
place 3.70.651.1 as pc36img.zip on root of sd-card
reboot phone and pull battery on start screen
then do vol down and power button.
then install the 3.70.651.1 update
then do ##786# once into phone....
reboot
activate phone
turn on 3g only no wifi yet
check for firmware
then do last option
then select wifi only
now to root we do:
run 3.29.651.5 update as RUU from windows
then root phone with unrevoked forever
then use clockworks mod rom manager to get rooted version with wirleless n support
then install radios via rom manager...

You should be able to use Unrevoked:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
make sure you have the droid incredible driver installed on your PC as well.
--
This process should root your phone, you'll then be able to flash other ROM's that may prove to be quicker, drain less battery, more stylish.

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.
Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0 --> http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip Place on root of sd in no folders.
Super user binary -->

See my post a couple up.
And for your info unrevoked gave the to new firmware error because you must be on the stock froyo radio for it to work, you are on the latest gingerbread radio. And there is also a newer version of gingerbread out, the official one 4.06.605.3 ruu you can get it in the dev section but if you do go from .2 to .3, do it before rooting as it will also un-root you.

I read your previous post and follow your instruction but with no luck. I tried several custom recovery and renamed it to PB31IMG.zip but always fail. Is there any other way to flash the custom recovery, perhabs with fastboot, adb, etc and how? Can I flash back to RUU Froyo OTA then use unrevoked to get root since I already S-OFF?
Edit: Done! I get root again, thanks cmlusco. The problem is my SDCard which I used in Desire before. After reformatting the SDCard, everythings went well.

Has anything changed since the last post in this thread or is there a topic I should be following to find out when/if/how I can root the phone?

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.
Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0 --> Place on root of sd in no folders.
Super user binary -->
Place anywhere you like on your sd.

I have the exact same scenario but in the past I have never rooted a phone other than to get rid of software (that sprint forced on EVO) so I have never used recovery. I have been searching but maybe didn't go back far enough to be clear. Do I just copy the files as you stated and then select "recovery" while in the hboot screen???

Any further explanation would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

You take the PB31IMG.zip and the su.zip and place them on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot and wait a couple secs. It will find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to hit volume up to flash it. Once thats done then select recovery from hboot and select install zip from sd and select the su.zip. Answer yes when prompted to install. After it has finished reboot your phone and install thr superuser app from the market. Thats it then your fully rooted.
Thanks for your help again.
I hit volume up to flash and within about a second it shows update complete and asks to reboot device. I've tried both ways Yes and No, with No continuing on and doing the su.zip as instructed. It doesn't seem to do anything either way. How long should the PB31IMG take to flash?
