if you put your desire in hboot and plug in your usb, it should say hboot usb plug
Same situation here. No Hboot USB option to select even if you plug in the usb cable. My Desire is on Hboot 0.93.

Thanks. Followed the instructions and i think I got my phone rooted since there is a superuser permission icon in my apps list. Once rooted, in your hboot menu should show S-OFF or S-ON? Mine is still showing S-ON. Is this right?
mine says s-on at the top next to Bravo PT1 Ship
It'll say S-ON at the moment as S-OFF isn't available yet.
If you read the instructions you'll see that only EVO users have to find HBOOT USB

Can I now use Rom Manager to back up my existing rom and flash custom rom like cynogenmod? Thanks for your reply.
Turn the phone off, turn it on holding volume down and once on select recovery. Then once in clockwork mod select backup and make a backup...job done

Thanks. I managed to make a backup copy of my rom using your instructions. I'm a newbie to this and wonder if it's possible to use Rom Manager to flash custom roms since security on my phone is still on.
You can flash ROMs using the same recovery you just used. Copy the ROM you want onto your SD card and then select 'install zip from SD card' and then 'choose zip' and select what the ROM file...nice and easy
I find ROM Manager to be a bit of a waste of time - I prefer to know what I'm doing and learn...
My phone keeps showing HROOT. It doesn't change to HROOT USB PLUG when I plug in a USB cable. I'm on HBOOT 0.93.0001 on my phone. I am using windows xp professional on my PC.
The Device manager doesn't show other devices. Any idea how I will be able to install the HBOOT driver required for unrevoked ?
I did uninstall HTC Sync, but HTC Driver is still on my PC. Should I uninstall HTC Driver also ? I've read somewhere I had to leave it.
EDIT: Maybe it's because i'm not using the original usb cable. I'm using a universal kit from skpad.
That works for charging the battery. But when I try to connect my phone as a diskdrive it doesn't show up in explorer either. I'll try again friday evening when I have my original cable.
EDIT2: I was able to install the driver on my PC using another USB cable. Now the mouse pointer on my PC freezes when i plug in the USB cable with my phone in HBOOT USB mode. I'm using a logitech wireles mous that is connected with my pc through an USB hub. The phone is connected to an USB port on the front of my PC case. Any ideas what might be causing the problem ? I'm using windows XP Professional

Hi, this is my first post so please be easy with me...
I currently have a HTC desire which i've owned for 4/5 months and love it!
i recently updated my desire to froyo 2.2 from the update option on the phone...i'm curently with the network o2 UK.
I bought a 16GB microSD card so that i can install the apps on the microSD card but noticed that not all apps can be moved to the microSD card.
this is causing me problems as i have low memory on my phone now since the Adobe Flash 10.1 update (10mb)
i was discussing this with a friend who has told me to root the phone and forwarded me to this website! (great site by the way!!)
Now i am looking to root the phone but i dont know where to start...
I know i have to hboot my phone in order to install ROMS but can someone explain to me what i should do before hand?
do i need to backup my phone? and how to i do this?
also once backed up and ready to ROOT which ROM is the best rom to use? there are 1000s of ROMS and i dont really know where to start...
if someone could please help me that would be much appreciated
Use this to root:
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
As for which ROM, it's subjective so you (unfortunately) have to do a lot of reading and try some. See what you like and what you don't
cheers...
so this unrevoked will just root my phone so i can install ROMs?
sorry if its a daft question but i'm new to all this and trying to learn

unrEVOked gives you root and a custom image (ClockworkMod).
When you've rooted your phone you can start it in Recovery mode and from there you can install ROMs.
so do i need to backup my phone/contacts before installing unrEVOked?
You can't, so no...once rooted you can then do a backup in Clockwork Mod before flashing a new ROM.
Do some more reading in the Dev forum for more information (read the stickies)
Just to let you know, I'm creating a website where you can find all the ROMs for the HTC Desire and, if it's succesful, for other Android phones too.
i'm trying the hboot but i do not have an option for HBOOT USB PLUG,
i only have;
Fastboot
Recovery
Clear Storage

... What the hell are you talking about?
In HBOOT, choose Recovery.
Done.
EDIT: Oh, I just got it. You have to install the ADB driver or whatever if you use Windows, while in HBOOT.
If you check the unrEVOked wiki there's a guide for you
If you're trying to use unrEVOked, you just open it and connect your Desire and do NOT touch it until the program says 'Done'
Once done you then just select 'Recovery' as mentioned above

i am following these instructions and it says select HBOOT USB at the menu...
1. Download the unrEVOked modified USB driver and expand it somewhere you will remember.
2. Turn off your phone, then boot it into the HBOOT menu by holding power and volume down.
3. On your phone, you will have to select HBOOT USB at that menu by pressing volume down four times, then power. Wait until the screen flashes through an “SD Checking” message before pressing buttons; otherwise, the phone will ignore keypresses.
4. Connect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
5. Open Device Manager.
6. Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
7. Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device, similar to the picture below.
8. Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software. You should then be at the following screen:
9. Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
10. Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder on on your computer, click ok, then click next.
11. You should get a status bar indicating that the driver is installing. If you get any warnings, just click Ok.
12. Your driver should install and your screen will look like below.
13. Click Close and make sure Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone.

The Hboot USB will display ABOVE your menu selections so just boot into Hboot, and then wait for the green text to flash, then plug in the usb, wait for the text above your selection to chage to Hboot USB PLUG, and go from there
It's cause part of that guide is based on the HTC EVO 4G (which does have HBOOT USB PLUG in the menu). The main guide by unrEVOked does actually say this but people using this slightly wrong version may get confused...
if i want to unroot, i need to backup the rom by root the desire 1st, then go to the recovery mode to backup, right? Is it just unroot by restore it? Do it need to remove or downgrade the Hboot?
If you want to unroot you need to get the RUU your phone came with and flash that, you can't backup a non-rooted ROM
right guys, i've done the hboot part of the root (with help for the replies i got, thanks guys) and now going to root the phone using unrevoked but come across another problem...i have switched on usb debugging and when i did i got another 'found new hardware wizard' and it wants me to install drivers for this.
if i go under device manager its got ADB under other devices and not configured...is this normal? should i proceed with rooting?
EDIT - FIXED!
hi guys,
downloaded the latest unrevoked for windows and opened the .exe but it has been stuck on the same screen for 10 mins...
it says:
Waiting for device. Plug phone in now and enable usb debugging. Make sure HTC sync is *not* installed
Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery
any ideas?
EDIT - FIXED!
guys i've rooted the desire now and i really need some help...
i just backed up my data using nandroid via Clockwork mod and it was successful.
I then choose the reboot now option and my phone is in a boot loop.
can anyone help?
EDIT - FIXED BY RESTORING TO THE BACKUP I MADE
SUCCESSFULLY installed Leedroid 2.1a!! nice...
but after much headache and messing around found out i've installed Leedroid that doesn't install apps to SD...i've been told that i need to partition my sd card using linux boot cd which i dont have and aint got a clue how to use... i thought installing apps to sd card could be done by installing ROMs but i guess not so looks like i have been wasting my time as all i really wanted was to install all my apps to the sd card
anyway thanks for the help guys
You can partition the card using the AmonRA custom recovery - it's extremely well documented that this is how A2SD+ works...lesson learnt to research fully before jumping into something you don't understand
Hi, today a have tried to root my htc desire using revoked 2 method. I was unable to install usb drivers. And now i cant even mount desire as hard drive. Computer still reports that device is unknown. I tried different usb ports, 2 different cabels, windows xp and seven. Before everything worked fine. Do you thing it is possible, that i damaged phone, when i plug it out just disconnecting cable?
Which version of unrEVOked did you try? I seems like a driver issue as you have to install the modified Hboot drivers for unrEVOked in a certain way before unrEVOked will work. If you attempted root with unrEVOked 3.21, did you follow the steps mentioned in thi thread?:

Ok, thank you for that info.
To tell you the truth, with unrEVOked 3.21, you must install the modified HBOOT drivers for it to work, otherwise it will not work at all.
Please try following this guide as it is definately requied. I asked you above if you had tried going through it, you mentioned that you had only tried using the guide in the first link, but you definately need to have the modified HBOOT drivers installed to proceed.

Try what is suggested and let me know if you can proceed past step three after configuring the HBOOT drivers first, as it is a must.

Hmm... yes i see what you mean. Unrevoked is fussy regarding drivers. Try the following:
1) Uninstall HTC Sync completely, the HTC Driver Setup, and HTC BMP Driver if present.
2) Reboot and reinstall the HTC Sync software (latest version).
3) Now uninstall HTC Sync Alone. Keep other two (HTC Driver Setup and HTC BMP Driver) installed.
4) Reboot your PC again.
Note: do not connect phone to PC at all and make sure the phone is switched off.
5) Switch your phone to the Bootloader screen. Connect the phone via USB and it should show Fastboot USB.
6) Windows will show the device detection dialog box - at this point, stop Windows from getting the driver from Windows Update, and manually choose the location of the driver as the folder where Unrevoked driver is present.
7) After this is done, diconnect phone again.
8) Go through the unrEVOked guide and connect the phone when advised to.
If this fails, then try unrEVOked 3.22 (in my sig below) and see how that goes and although you have mentioned that you have tried 3 different PC's, you may have to consider trying it on a different OS platform, such as Linux.

Try downloading the Android SDK: installer_r08-windows.exe
Follow the steps in this video to hopefully get the appropriate USB drivers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N66J6UiN5Pg&feature=player_embedded
EDIT:
With the phone connected, try the following afterwards:
Check to make sure that you have USB Debugging enabled on your phone.
In Device Manager, right-click your Unknown Android device and select 'Update Driver Software'. Browse to the folder (extract the zip to the Desktop) i have attached below and see if it installs them.

OK, i will try the thing with sdk..i am downloading files right now, but that makes no sense to download any other windows drivers. I agree... it is clearly an HBOOT driver issue or the phone... Windows (PC host) drivers are seperate. I was just running out of ideas really
The only definate way of knowing if it is the device that is causing this issue is if you were to try it on a non-Windows related OS, like Linux and maybe it would work for you using an Ubuntu Live CD.

Yes, because it is not as fussy with drivers as Windows is - with Windows, they have to be properly removed from its cache. With Linux, the phone should be detected ok (unless the phone is at fault).
Here is a simple guide that you can follow:

So, linux didnt work either, system didnt even recognize that anything was plug in. Even crossed fingers dident help Well only last thing I have to ask, if there is any possibility to recover hboot, restore it somehow. Forexample through recovery menu in hboot loader and some kind of .zip file, that i will put to SD card. If not, well I will have to step out to that freezing weather and walk to orange store for reclamation, which I hope would be positive for me, but something telling me it surely will.
I found something about usb unbrick here on xda forum, but is only for root phones
well i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9056719&postcount=15 i think it could work, just i dont know a way how to discover my CID number..to modify mtd0.img file
ok, i did everything step by step using rageagainstthecage tutorial, but nothing happend at all.
If anyone could help...
Are you able to get into Fastboot?
I suppose running your stock RUU in Hboot won't make a difference then... how about trying the PB99IMG method, which involves renaming the extracted rom.zip file to PB99IMG.zip from your stock RUU, placing this to the root of your SD card and then letting it run from Fastboot mode. This would restore your stock Hboot. You could also try AlphaRev's modified 0.93 HBOOT with S-OFF?
I decided to S-OFF my Desire, so I downloaded alpharev.iso and burnt it to my usb stick.
I booted the USB and plugged in my device when the software says so;
Step 1 complete.
Step 2: Waiting for BOOTLOADER....
Error finding device
And the Desire starts rebooting to the splash screen continuously......
an hour later I unplugged it and it's alive....
I really want to S-OFF it but what went wrong?
Well... could be either you haven't got the drivers installed, you haven't got usb debugging enabled or you didn't let it have root access.

Please help me to recover my phone
my phone is rooted and s-off
Best bet is to RUU to stock so you will get a working phone, then you can add the custom recovery, roms, ect.

And this need a PC that can find the device to flush it using CMD...
Helo experts,,,, where are you... My phone is dying...
A usb otg cable allows you to attatch a usb flash drive to your phone. Rename the ruu zip to PN07IMG.zip and put it on the usb drive in no folders. Then attatch it to your phone and boot to hboot. Hboot will automaticly find the file and prompt you to install it.
You can also try using these drivers to get your pc to recognize the phone. http://vzw1files.dyndns.org/ADB/ADB_Drivers.zip
And here are all the available ruus for the verizon htc one. http://vzw1files.dyndns.org/RUUs/

Thanks dear,
I did as you describe in the otg method but unfortunately may phone shows no response at all.
I had already tried to solve all issues of drivers, but also this failed.
Could this be a hardware problem e.g. in the USB port or what??
Make sure the usb drive is formated fat32 and the file is named exactly caps and all PN07IMG.zip. If it still dosent work, its possible it has a bad usb port.

The USB drive and otg cable work fine in my galaxy note, the format is fat32, and the RUU name is exactly as you wrote, so I think the problem in the USB port unless you have another idea..
I would say more than likley its a bad usb port. Does the phone still charge?

Yes it charge well..
Well its somewhat working then. I guess its possible that one of the data pins is messed up. Have you tried cleaning out the port? Not sure what else you can do without a working usb connection.
