Renaming Photos Taken - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I have been with my EVO since the white one came out, but I came from a hacked Pre, and with that I had a *hack* that renamed my photos after taking them to the date they were taken and not something like IMAG001.. Is there anything like this for the Evo or Android in the Market or hack.. it would really help because now when I take a picture, if I go to delete it and take a new picture it takes the place of persay IMAGE0216 when I would maybe have 1000 photos taken...
Thanks

Open you camera, hit settings and there should be an option for Geo Tagging. I think that's what you are looking for.

I will try this but then it prompts me turn on my GPS for that, I shouldn't have to do that since it will waste more battery right?

Geotagging Photos

Hi there,
Recently had an epic trip (thanks to the volcano), left geotagging on for all photos, so I can see them dotted across a map of Europe.
Cant find any way of viewing them, I've tried uploading one to flickr, and it doesn't do anything automatically.
Is there something I need to do? Gotta say, the iphone geotagging feature is much better implemented...
Regards
niklz
my bet is on picasa as it is googles own photo hosting. On my picasa I have a small google map on the bottom right of my home page with a mark on florida for the photos from last years warped tour and dundee from a random jaunt i went last summer =]
I assume this is exactly what yours would show up like if you uploaded them all.
Im actually going to go check see if this works...
Edit: ok i cannot get geotagging to work, full stop... not good.
Any light shed on the subject would be awesome
Seconded, dying to see them.
If you open the EXIF data (right click the photo in Windows Explorer, properties, details) there should be a 'GPS' section which has latitude and longitude coodinates if the geotagging info has been stored correctly...
Nothing wrong with geotagging here. Take photo, upload to flickr, view flickr, click add to map and the map is centred on the geotagged coordinates.
If you check the photo properties on flickr you should see the following
GPS Latitude:
GPS Longitude:
GPSAltitude Ref: Above Sea Level
GPSAltitude: 79 m
GPSTime Stamp: 08:29:46
GPSMap Datum: WGS-84
GPSProcessing Method: HYBRID-FIX
GPSDate Stamp:
Just tried it in picasa (desktop version), just uploaded photos direct from phone to web picasa. Then sync the desktop picasa to your web albums. You`ll see a small red icon in the bottom left (google maps). Click on places icon in the bottom right and a map will open showing your locations of your photos.
Or a really cool feature is to select all your photos, click the geotag icon at the bottom. It`ll open google earth and geotag all then you can see all your photos in google earth.
In your Flickr settings, enable "Import EXIF location data".
Hmm, my photos don't seem to have any EXIF data on geo location :*((((.
I had GPS on obv, all I have done with the photos is copy them onto my hdd, using the HTC usb cable.
I have since replaced the phone, anything else I could try? Or has my old phone just cocked it up...
Regards
niklz
Just tried same procedure with new phone, no luck.
Sorry to be a pain, but could you do an idiots guide.
What settings must be in affect on the phone/PC.
What method of getting photos to picasa/flickr insures the uploaded file isn't compressed e.c.t.
Would be very grateful, Let me check if this new photo has geotags in the EXIF data.
Regards,
niklz
Bump, please cant get this to work atm...
I`m just uploading to flickr or picasa straight from the phone. Take photo, press share icon, send to my flickr/picasa account.
If you load into the pc they should be fine, but exif (geotag) data can be lost if you manipulate and resave the images in some software.
Also, on the Desire. Check the settings in camera has geotagging on, then when taking a geotagged photo make sure you have gps lock. The animated gps (satellite) icon in the top left corner of the camera screen will be replaced by a target to show locked location.

Ahh, its the lock thing! really really wish I'd have known this a week ago!
Thanks for the help, now it works fine. takes ~30sec to lock for the first time, is that normal?
Is there a decent geotag app for the desire, will google earth do it on the desire?
kind regards,
niklz
Yes usually takes about 30 secs to lock onto the satellites. You could always leave GPS on but then its going to eat battery.
Haven't tried any geotagging apps for android sorry. Google earth wont do it. Its pretty basic on android, recommend doing those kind of things on the PC.
aaah right. so yea i had the right idea but had no idea about the location lock. Cheers guys
Does anyone know if it is possible to geo-tag using only tower location? Used to be able to do this on my iphone and although not 100% accurate, at least lets you get a rough idea without trying to get a GPS lock?
Our is there an app which would do this?

A few questions so far

I would like to find a program that will allow me to sync all my pictures from my pc to my phone. Now I know that seems like a simple task, but here is what I have run accross. I have about 30GB of pics, but when I sync my iPad and my iPhone, iTunes resizes them to look good on the phone and they only take up about 7GB. I tried Doubletwist, but the problem I ran into was in took all 8000 photos and just put them into ONE directory. You know how hard it is to look through 8000 photos?? LOL I want to keep all my subdirectories when they get synced. I tried the trial version of the missing sync, but it was taking FOREVER to sync the photos, but it did keep the subdirectories, but surely there is something out there to resize for the EVO screen AND keep the directory structure?? Is there a program for the PC to make a good backup for my phone for when I start rooting or trying new roms etc??
Next big question, on email, is there not away to see the ENTIRE full page without scrolling left and right? If I open an email say from newegg.com it is more or less just the upper left corner, even after pinching to zoom out. On my iPhone, I can see the full email, yes it is super tiny, but then I can just click to zoom into a certain spot to read and then click to zoom back out. I don't understand why I can not do this on the Android.
Thanks for any help and answers, I am sure I will be in here learning a lot. See ya.

For pictures, just plug in the included USB cable into PC. On phone, select the disk option (dont remember quite what it is called, but HTC Sync is the wrong one)
From the PC, find the newly mounted disk (F:, etc.)
Drag and drop the pictures. Directory structure will be retained.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried this also, the problem with this is that it keeps the original file resoultion and size, so I then have 30GB and not 7GB from the optimization.
Mac
Resizing photos is simple.
Here is my favorite:
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/
Integrates right into the windows shell (rick click on pictures)

[Q] Wallpaper/Contact Converter App??

I can't believe there isn't one on the market!!
It kills me every time I take a picture with my phone it looks great in the gallery but when I use it as wallpaper the quality is terrible!!
Same with adding pictures to contacts... What's the point in adding pictures if they come up all blurry!
Just saying... I'd pay good money to get this fixed and I am sure a lot of others would as well.
Possibly an App that downsizes a picture to 960x800??
And contact pictures to 96x96(I think)?
unless somebody has a better way of doing this besides taking picture on phone, transferring to computer, converting size, transfer back to phone, add wallpaper/contact....
totally +1 for this, pretty odd there isn't a stock method to do this

Andoid vet w/ a n00b question

I've always had this problem on every ROM i've ever used. the thing was i never really cared enough to ask anyone what the issue was lol. so maybe someone can help me out here.
i typically use sense roms and i have photos assigned to a lot of my contacts. these arent facebook or twitter pics sync'ed with the contact, just default photos i saved for them. i also use SMS Popup. some pics dont show up in the messaging app. some pics dont show up on the popup notification. anyone know the reason for this?
PS. the photos DO show up when i go to my list of contacts though.

Gonna take a real quick shot in the dark, so take it with a grain of salt. Any photos that show up in all places correctly, check their dimensions, file type, and size. My guess, and I heavily emphasize guess here, is that each place you're looking for these (the app, built in contact list, etc) has its certain requirements for pic size, dimensions and file type. If you examine the ones that are working in all places correctly, it might give some headway into figuring out what is wrong with the other ones. If none are working in all places, try taking one of the contact pics, go into windows paint, crop it to the size you would want to see, do a "save as..." and choose .jpg. Windows paint will strip out any additional layers and such that are weighing on the image and pretty much break it down to its most simple form and reduce the size. Then load up that modified pic and see if it works everywhere, if it does, rinse and repeat. If it doesn't work, well, it was worth a shot.

Problems and Questions Using Gallery and Quikpic

Just got the M8 and love it as I knew I would. I had the M7
But the galleries for HTC are so different than any other makers. Samsung mainly
Samsung's gallery is straightforward. HTC? Not so much. I never used 100Media, didn't know what it was and my camera/videos/wallpaper folders worked fine
Now I have the Gallery on HTC. I know how to use the basics of it, hide files etc, and I see the Zoe's up top. My question for this gallery is: is there a way to isolate simply the pictures you have taken with a camera, not the videos with it, and not any other pics like my wallpapers. It seems like I get all of them or my vids and camera pics
What is more confusing is the fact that I don't need to use that. I started using Quikpic for the purpose of fixing the date, enabling sorting from date etc. I was told and experienced Android is very inconsistent with that. I love Quik Pik
But with the HTC it is a little confusing
I was told that HTC created the 100Media? ...by the app creator. Yet I could swear that I saw it on previous phones. Nexus, Samsung, etc.
In any case, the Zoe's are supposed to go there. I can answer my own question. They don't appear there because just as another phone that doesn't do Zoe's can't play a Zoe, nor can an app, correct
Help me understand if I changed things to be the way they should be, for this app, and for this phone
I just moved all my camera pics to 100Media I believe it works perfect. New camera pics show there. BUT there are about 5 or 6 files that I delete, could restart the phone and they come back.
Any ideas would be appreciated
