There are more than a few topics of the same question. The SMS on cm6 doesn't autosplit nor is there an option for it. You have to use handcent or smschomp. And change the setting to split.. also with handcent you can customize it to look close to stock... also font packages if you want a different font. I love it. Hate the bubbles so I changed it. Play around with it. I thought I'd hate it and did because of lame bubbles till I messed around and found out I don't have to have the bubbles

All,
How do i expand the text i received.. i can only see about 200 characters..
I have sms messages (logs) that are over 1000 characters and cannot read
the entire message..
Joe
A picture is worth a thousand....characters lol.
Are u using the HTC messaging app? Try Handcent from the market and see if that makes a difference....you can always uninstall it.
I don't really understand your problem, to be honest..

short message service has a limit of 160 characters I think. Anything over that and you get multiple messages, each one starting where the previous one left off.
That's why I'm confused...unless the senders phone chopped them off and they never got sent
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i tried handcent.. it listed my old messages however still no dice on viewing the entire message... so what's with the 160 characters?
Looking for an sms app that can report back to me when a message i sent has been read by the receiver. Need this for work been looking all day and havent found it.
Handcent says its does this but everyone giving feedback on that app are saying horrible things about missing text/not receiving text. I installed this and tried it sending about 30 text and 2 werent received until like 10 minutes later
Gosms - not sure if it does have this capability looked at the details of what this app does and didnt mentioned it did.
smspop up- doesnt do it just gives a delivery report. Which is understandable since this is just to make your sms pop up.
theres another one cant remember the name of it but the recipient has to have the app installed as well and has to be sent from that app.
Anyway to make the stock app do this?
**Mod's Delete if you want or merge but i searched over and over on this site and other sites and did not find the answer. Posted on here instead of general android app because this is the phone i use so im always looking at this thread.
Just use Kik messenger and get all your friends to join. It is live messaging and shows when messages are read. Just a thought, not exactly what you wanted as it doesn't work for SMS. A cool thing is it also tells you if they are typing.
Not sure if Handcent does that or not.

the thing is i need that feature for the text i send to coworkers.
i use chomp sms and it has read notifications fully integrated and working

It won't work with normal texts. Kik/all those other apps are able to show when messages are read because they're internet-based.
Only certain carriers allow it. Not sprint .

gonna take a look at that app. does it have issues with not receiving or taking too long to receive a text.
Edit: looked at the feedback and many complaining about not receiving text and many not being able to send messages but I guess ymmv

sprint doesn't allow what?
Ok so is there any setting I'm missing that will change a SMS that goes over 140 characters to a MMS so the person I'm texting does not receive multiple text.
My wife and I both have SGIII's and when she sends me a long text it breaks it into several text instead of just one long text.
Is there any way to change this?

exuse me but i can't understand you.
could you be more clear?
When you send or receive a text that is longer than 140 characters it is sent or received in multiple messages instead of just one longer message.
Is there a setting that let's you receive messages longer than 140 characters in one text instead of the message being broken into two or three smaller messages?

Try handcent I think that has an option to do that

I would really like to keep using the stock app if possible. Not a big fan of adding apps if I don't need to.
Here is a screenshot of me sending myself a text. You can see it is received in two parts.

as far as i know, CDMA phones can only go up to 160 characters per text.
so that option in handcent is only for the GSM phones which can send longer texts than 160.
so unfortunately you cant change that. now i do know that there are some roms that after so many messages (like 3 or 4 sms in one) it converts it to an MMS rather than an SMS, i don't know if the stock sms app does it, but i know that the handcent app has an option to disable it to rather then sending 3 or 4 sms as an MMS it sends all 4 SMS's.
but thats my 2 cents worth.
It can definitely be done. Are you running stock or do you have a custom ROM?

I was thinking it could be done because I've had that built into almost every ROM I ever ran on Verizon and their network is also CDMA. I just switched to Sprint a few weeks ago so did not know if it was a Sprint thing.
I'm running FreeSG3-v0.0.9.1, if there was a write up somewhere I can decompile whatever needs to be changed and make the changes myself.
I haven't ran stock since I first rooted my OG Droid...

If you're running an AOSP rom, open up the Messaging app and hit the menu button. Go to settings and scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see it!
Hey I'm on paranoidandroid and whenever I try to send a big message in which it has to spilt and I hit send it always fails, why is that? I'm using the stock messaging app.

Just curious, do you have a Sprint Airave or Airvana in your home?
Do you have Handcent or any custom messaging app? Also does the split messages have more than 160 characters?

You can only send a maximum of 160 characters in each text. If it has one character more, it will not send. Go to the settings of your messaging app and see if you can make it send a max of 160 characters in each text.

This is so not true. You can send more than 160 characters. The phone will split it up for you in however many pieces it needs to and there's no setting for it, its done automatically. I text more than 160 characters all the time. My phone always sends and its a feature that I've experienced on many phones for years now, way before Android. So to OP something is definitely wrong with your phone.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Here's an example
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
This is something that towers handle. Some towers on the CDMA network handle >160 character SMS messages. Some do not and require the text messaging application to split messages >160 into multiple smaller messages.
It sounds like the messaging app isn't working for you. I would backup /system/app/MMS.apk somewhere and push a new one (Perhaps a CM based one) to /system/app.
Thanks

Smh, you just contradicted yourself. The towers will not accept a text with more than 160 characters in it. Obviously, it will be separated but the OP said he had more than 160 characters in each text.
For the OP, get handcent or some other messaging app. Go into the settings and there will be an option that tells you how many characters per text before it splits up. Mess with that to make it work.
Once I reach the character max for the first message I can't go past that! Why! Whyyyyyy!?

It should split when you send mine does. Try a third party sms like gosms or chomp sms.

Sprint is CDMA network and has trouble with more than 160 characters. If you're on a custom rom, like AOKP or CM, there generally is an option in sms settings to auto-split.

I use Sprint's stock messaging app and have no trouble sending messages longer than 160 characters, and they split properly on the other end. Do you get an error message or anything when you hit 160? Mine counts down characters to 0/160 and then continues on with 160/160, 159/160, etc.

^^^ This. I also use stock messaging app and never had any issues. I also use the auto-combination feature and when people send me messages longer than 160 characters it combines them back into one message. It says it only work from Galaxy to Galaxy phones but that's a lie. My sister has the EVO LTE and when she sends me long messages they come in one whole text.

I'm running MC2 4.1.2 stock rooted and have auto-combination checked, but messages still come in split, at least from my son's AT&T iPhone. Is there anything else that should be set to get it working, or is it an iPhone thing?

Maybe it's because she's with a different carrier. Another cool thing is that my sisters EVO is also combining long messages too by default. However you still see the 1/2 - 2/2 on her EVO unlike our Galaxy which does a better job.
Edit: Nope it don't work from ATT iPhones. I just received my cousins text in two..
