[Q] Adfree not working on froyo ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I upgraded recently to Leedroid 2.1 but I'm anoyed by all the ads that are consuming my data plan of 10mb/month :-(
I tried to install adfree but writing to my hosts file always results in access denieds :-(
Even with su rights it doesn't want to change the file, has anyone found a solution for this kind of problem ?
Thank you

How about using search? Also, this thread does not belong in development. It's a general question.
=================
There is no write access to /system on the Desire.... yet.
There is two ways to get it working. Either flash/copy a hosts file over in recovery mode (there are tons of threads about it), or enable overlay file system (search).

I wouldn't put faith in the OP being able to navigate through his phone in recovery, seeing as he is unable to search a forum.
This is not a Development question and thus should not be posted in the Development forum.
Thread also reported.

Issue
I actually have some braincells ... en linux experience acolwill ...
Anyway I've tried to flash the hosts file with amon ra recovery but that was also resulting in an access denied when it had to copy the hosts file.
I tried 3 days ago the "enable adblock script" from this thread:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741435
But as it failed I tried alternatives, but I'm getting out of alternatives as everything results it access denieds.

Trying to run Ad Free

Hi everyone!
I am trying to make Ad Free from the Market work but it won't. My HTC Desire is rooted with unrevoked (so, not S-OFF, but I've read that it's not necessary. Is it?).
I have tried two different things:
1) Run the program WITHOUT the symlink option enabled. The phone automatically reboots and nothing happens, adds are still shown in all the apps.
2) Run the program WITH the symlink option enabled. The program seems to work and a message appears saying that my phone should now be add free. But, in fact, it is not, adds are still visible everywhere.
I have been looking for solutions in this forum and in Google but I have seen a lot of different procedures suggested by users and I am not sure it would be safe for the phone to try them one by one.
It would be great if someone has been in the same situation and could tell me how to solve my problem.
Thank you in advance.
You either have to be s-off in order for the app to place the modified "hosts" file in /system/etc/ Otherwise you have to have the file symlinked to a specific place on the data-position(this is the place the app places the "hosts" file if you check the option for symlink.)
You can also just push the modified hosts file from recovery
edit: my suggestion is to s-off it, as it makes everything so much easier, and if you screw something up, you can almost always recover your phone without running a ruu.

I have been trying to do that before opening this thread but I didin't manage to do it successfully. Could you please help me through the process?
Anyway, how could I do the "you have to have the file symlinked to a specific place on the data-position(this is the place the app places the "hosts" file if you check the option for symlink.)" part?
You need to edit the ROM to symlink the hosts file to the /data partition

Is there any place where I can get info to do that? I am kind of inexperienced...
don't do it just push the goddamn file in recovery or for god sake please just run s-off.
If you want help pushing it, pm me.
edit: host file added
You need to have s off, this is easy with alfarev!

Have been suggested(twice by me), but as you might get from reading his replies, he doesn't want to do that. I guided him through pushing the file though, so the problem have been resolved.

With some help from mortenmhp by private messaging I got it to work without s-off. Anyway, I tried alfarev this morning and it detects my phone but gets stuck in the next step...
By the moment is one thing I don't need, but it would be fine to know what the problem is...

S-OFF doesn't work with all kinds of desire phones ...
some PVT-4 (like mine) cant be S-OFF u may brick it trying so just push files its safer using terminal emulator from market or using ADB
this may help u with commands http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688820
Well, in alfarev web site they say their software is compatible with PTV4 HTC Desire, but anyway mine is PTV3, so the problem can't be that.

Yes it does, or at least it works with all gsm ones for now. From their website:

Also no you cannot use terminal emulator to push files, and you most certainly cannot use it to manage files on the /system partition without s-off.
Dj Telo: the most common problems with alpharev is connected to the computer the software is run on. Are you using an emulator to boot the disk, or are you actually booting it?
If the first one is the case, you will need to burn the image and boot it, however, if that doesn't work, you might need to try another computer. Just borrow one, as it is a onetime thing, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Also make sure your current rom is not using d2sd, d2ext or something similar, as the tool uses the data-partition and may not work with the ext-partition,
I am very sure, you do not s-off to run adfree!!
Did you run "download & install hosts" directly after starting adfree and requested the superuser request to "yes" and "remember"? Which ip do you use?

Well as already explained the relevant file (/system/etc/hosts) is placed on the system partition(obviously). And as such it cannot be edited while the system is booted without s-off, so an app won't be able to do so.
So unless the system has been edited to load the file from the data-partition(as in the symlink option i referred to earlier) yes you do indeed need s-off to use the app. However as you might get from actually reading through the thread, the actual problem has been resolved, and currently he is just trying to gain s-off.

I did burn a CD but it did not work. I will borrow a computer, as you suggest. There's a busy week for me coming but I'll try that afterwards. I'll insist on this thread in case I can't succeed.

Yet another way to install New Market on XDANDROID

Since i cant Post in the Android development section (Mods can you merge this post with this thread =>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216924
thank you
...
ok now heres how i did it.
First get the newest market http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...-and-games-pin-number-for-purchases-and-more/ , download it then rename it to com.android.vending.apk and dump it in the root of your SD card
then go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All Tab->Market: Clear Cache and Clear Data (must be done for this to work
then i connected my HTC Touch Pro 2 (sprint) (RHOD 400) to my computer using Droid Explorer . http://de.codeplex.com/releases/view/66510
then i ran the console (droid explorer shell)
then i used the line cp /sdcard/com.android.vending.apk /system/app/Vending.apk (THANKS Starfox for the code in your post)
I noticed it removed the market 1.8.2 (or whatever version i had on it)..
then i just ran the installer i put in my root of the SD card and it worked..
I want to thank Starfox, arrrghhh and nickelghandi for there tips and code..
I tried the other methods and with Starfox's Method I couldnt use the "," key on the htc keyboard..
Ive been using xdandroid for a couple of months and Just wanted to share what i had spent a couple hours trying to install the new market..
Mods thanks for your patience i am new to posting here.. Please move this thread to the android development section for others to use...
Doesen't work with my Blackstone...when trying to enter the line in Droid Explorer it tells me: cannot create "/system/ vending.apk" : file exists
When trying to install -> fail
The reason for trying to install a new market was a nontemporary error msg when trying to run /download from market which led to force close...-.-
Any idea what I can do?
It occured after getting freeze during market download...
Starfox's method always worked for me.

Read/Write access on system partition.

Question:
I have used AAHK to downgrade my DHD and root it, but apparently I don't have write access on the system partition. I have succesfully installed AOSPX BR6 and 7 and am now running Nik 's Project X. Tried installing AdAway last night, but when it attempts to change the 'hosts' file (/system/etc/hosts), it fails. I have granted permissions with Superuser when asked for it and I can see it attempt twice before it fails on 'applying hosts file' ('copying of hosts file failed!').
When I try and create a folder or file in the root using ES Explorer, it also fails ('sorry, operartion failed').
HBOOT states 'S-OFF RL'.
What am I doing wrong?
Thx

Adaway seems to act funny with ICS roms sometimes it works other times it wont. Try wiping data on it in menu>manage apps. If that dont help try Adfree from the play store.
That rom has a r/w problem. Have you done the fix to solve it? It's stated in the OP. Use the backup fix. After that, when trying to update it may fail the firsr time, run it again.
Sent from a dream.
Wiping cache did not work. Adfree seems to work fine but doesn't block all ads.
I will look for the fix tomorrow and give it a go.
Thx
Found it, it was in the second OP under patches & mods, must 've missed it. Thx for pointing me in the right direction. Will try tomorrow.
Pfff ... can't even quote another post without 10 post of my own (and I hate image verification ... so hard to decipher).
Flashing busybox zip didn't work, but the backup/restore of the ROM did fix it. SU is updated now and AdAway works perfectly, seems to block all ads.
Thx again.

[Q] AOSP keyboard update (from F-Droid)

Dear all, first of all...
HI!
I just registered (also after the call to arms on the original infinite thread about FP), so...
Then here is my question (that I think many already asked themselves): how to update the AOSP keyboard (4.2.2 -> 4.4.2) from F-Droid?
Problem: just doing it doesn't work, since the signature is different.
Solution 1: unistalling directly the keyboard is not possible, since it is a system app ==> FAIL
Solution 2: with system/app mover I moved the app in order to be able to uninstall it ... but it actually just disappeared
The app just doesn't exist anymore. Not too bad I thought. Problem is I can't reinstall it from F-Droid: everything looks smooth until I get a straight "Application not installed". I already rebooted and cleaned the caches. ==> FAIL again
So.... any idea?
Thanks in advance at least for reading.
P.S.
Where do I add a signature? I would like to say everywhere that I am NOT using the google apps
You can deinstall any system app using titanium backup. After that you should be able to install the ap from f-droid. The titanium backup .apk cann be found on their website.

Signature: Will be available for you when you become a Member - but I am not definitely sure, search a bit on XDA.
But if so, you can change it here: Control Panel -> Edit Signature
And here you have to post requirements. Don't post nonsense, as moderator would just delete the nonsense and could disable your account. Be productive

The signature thing was just a P.S. since I was already posting, of course I'm not going to add a thread just for that. Then if you mean that my question is a nonsense because the 4.4.2 keyboard is meant to be for Android 4.4.2..... ok, let it be! My apologies
Still, for someone new to Android, with a FP, using F-Droid, my thread could be useful (and the result, up to now, is: just don't).
Now I am trying to reinstall the keyboard from the flashable zip from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964663, but it still gives me "Installation aborted". So I think I'll withdraw and restore the OS.

No, I did not mean anything about the keyboard stuff, which is useful for several people using the Fairphone. Misunderstanding.
But I mean, there are several junior members, who posts nonsense like "nice" or "that's great" just to get a higher post count. You did not cross that line, that's good. Keep us informed about the keyboard for the fairphone, maybe you find a workaround, other apk installation files... anything. :good:
I wonder what's causing that? Could be the app wasn't removed properly; I tend to do that kind of thing via adb. It is possible to install with a different package name but a small change has to be made to dictionaries.xml before building. I already do this myself.
I found a solution,
This allows to update almost any system app in your android device. It is also quite risky, so I am not responsible if it goes wrong
First make sure that you have installed another keyboard and set that other keyboard as default, just in case. For example install anysoftkeyboard.
Check that your phone is rooted and enable adb. Download the update that you want to install to your working directory, for example I downloaded it from f-droid. The name of the apk in this example is com.android.inputmethod.latin_4424.apk
Open a shell on the directory that you have downloaded the update and follow this steps:
1) Get root permissions on your phone
Code:
adb root
2) Remount the /system partition with read and write permissions
Code:
adb remount
3) Search the name of the system apk on your phone that corresponds to the update by using a keywork from the file downloaded. In this case I use "latin"
Code:
adb shell 'pm list packages -f' | grep latin
And the output is
Code:
package:/system/app/LatinIME.apk=com.android.inputmethod.latin
This means that the apk we are interested in is LatinIME.apk and is in the /system/app directory
4) Let's do a backup of the original apk just in case
Code:
adb pull /system/app/LatinIME.apk LatinIME.apk.backup
5) Rename your apk update
Code:
mv com.android.inputmethod.latin_4424.apk LatinIME.apk
6) Update it to the /sdcard
Code:
adb push LatinIME.apk /sdcard/LatinIME.apk
7) Then copy it to the /system/app folder. Don't use the command "mv" or else you will have the following error: "failed on '/sdcard/LatinIME.apk' - Cross-device link". This is because /system and /sdcard are different partitions and the move command uses hardlinks to move files which only work inside the same partition.
Code:
adb shell 'cp /sdcard/LatinIME.apk /system/app/LatinIME.apk
8) Reboot your phone and you are done
If you had used the commands "adb install -r" or "adb uninstall" you would have come accross multiple errors from "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_INCONSISTENT_CERTIFICATES]" to a simple "Failure". That is because it is a system app and in my case it had a different signature.
I just found an easy solution (that worked at least on my FP..): delete the folder /data/data/com.android.inputmethod.latin (I also 'uninstalled' the keyboard with system/app mover before)
I used File Manager (from CyanogenMod, installed from FDroid), in root mode.

If anyone having issues with replacing AOSP keyboard with Google Keyboard, just remove any entries regarding
com.google.android.inputmethod.latin
and
com.android.inputmethod.latin
from the /data/system/packages.xml file
then uninstall AOSP keyboard, and Install Google Keyboard from an apk using:
"adb install -f -r com.google.android.inputmethod.latin-[version].apk"

Where/how to find hosts file in Android 8.0 Oreo?

Hi fellow developers,
I need to do modify my HTC 10's hosts file, but with the latest OTA update to Android 8.0, I find it impossible to make any functional changes to the hosts file. Does anyone have a clue?
I am rooted, and S-OFF with TWRP recovery.
In recovery, I have tried modifying all of these:
/system/etc/hosts
(which is only there normally when the phone is booted and running, I can't figure out where it's coming from)
/data/hosts
/data/data/hosts
None of these work.
Please help, if you know! I cannot find any information online, after hours of research and troubleshooting...
cheers,
Jordan
P.S. Despite S-Off and root, I find that many root procedures don't work when android is booted, disappointed, cannot understand why. Miss my One M8!

Thank you aM- for replying, someone hears my cry for help!
I tried to mount /system as read-write and instead got an "Error : The operation could not be completed".
This is frustrating, as again, I got S-OFF specifically for this purpose.
And SuperSU seems to function normally, asking me to grant permissions.
I had the same problem with a terminal editor, being unable to SU, permissions denied.
Are you on Android 8.0 Oreo as well?

I should be rooted.. I am unlocked and S-OFF.
I flashed SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822.zip from TWRP recovery.
I have the SuperSU app installed and it seems to run normally.
But I cannot "su" in a shell like you did, cannot mount /system partition as write, really, cannot do anything root.
Do you know what version of SuperSU you rooted yours with?
P.S. Android 8.0 as well, not 8.1 (which I presume hasn't rolled out to OTA yet)

Thanks so much aM- and fmedrano1977.
I've made progress. I reflashed my phone with the later SuperSU SR5 zip that you posted, wiped dalvik/cache, rebooted. Now I can "su", as well as mount /system/etc as read/write. Success!
There was a couple of catches, at least two or three other apps that don't seem to work with root anymore (like the previous file explorer I had, supposed to support root, but only "root explorer" worked after I bought it).
Now modifying my hosts file seems to have no effect, but I suppose that's another issue for another day. As it stands, I can now edit my hosts file thanks to your help.
Cheers!!
