Permanently Update Recovery Clockworkmod - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone,
In ROM Manager I choose to update the Recovery and it changes to 2.5.0.7.
If I reboot from ROM manager into Recovery it is 2.5.0.7
However if I power down and come into recovery via Fastboot, it is 2.5.0.1.
So I assume when you reboot it somehow loads the 2.5.0.7 (i would guess this is why I have a update.zip in root after this option)
My question is, how can I permanently update the recovery vs this on the go method?
Thanks,
Daniel

That method only does a "fake flash" of that particular Recovery which ROM Manager can use. It doesn't touch your original flashed Recovery.
The latest Unrevoked will let you update to the latest Clockwork Mod Recovery permanently: http://unrevoked.com/#desire

Clockwork Recovery and Flash Recovery

A quick question.
We all boot our Phones into Recovery, (And i do anyway)
Run Update.zip (Fake Flash)
And hey Presto am in Clockwork Recovery,
Is there not way to Flash your Recovery to have Clockwork Recovery as the default recovery,
No more running Update.zip and when you boot into recovery your in clockwork recovery.....
(Yes i know ROM manager and other utility's do that but from the simple power on with Volume button etc)
Use unrEVOked...

Basically with unrevoke, you can permanently flashed recovery of your choice (either Clockwork mod or AmonRa) into your phone. What this mean you can go directly to your recovery (by pressing Vol - and Pwr) without booting into any application or even ROM.
i have flashed to Clockwork Recovery, but i want to flash into AR recovery. i used the unvekoed to flash the customr recovery, after the desire reboot, it is still the Clockwork Recovery. What can i do?
Did you load the AR recovery in unrevoked? Start unrevoked, custom recovery image.
I'm just asking to be sure, not that you mix up names.

[Q] Different "levels" of recovery?

Some time ago i rooted my phone with Unrevoked, at that time it flashed Clockworkmod 2.5.0.1 to my phone. Since then i've been upgrading my recovery through ROM Manager, or so i thought anyway. Because using "Reboot into recovery" from ROM Manager, takes me to recovery with version 2.5.0.7 of Clockworkmod, but if i manually go into recovery, by turning the phone off and holding down the volume and the power button, i get to Clockworkmod 2.5.0.1 still.
Why is it like this? Almost like there is "different levels" of recovery modes? Do i have two different recoveries installed on the phone or something? And how do i flash my recovery so that when i boot into recovery the manual way, it's the latest as well?
Been doing some thinking, the reason ROM Manager doesn't seem to update the version when am booting into recovery the manual way, is it because of this S-ON thingy?
Did some reading on: http://alpharev.shadowchild.nl/ and there is some kind of security on /system and /recovery(which Alpharev can remove, but i haven't tried it yet), is this the reason why ROM Manager doesn't flash the recovery?
If so, when i click "reboot into recovery" from inside ROM Manager, what kind of recovery does it take me to, since the version obliviously is updated there?
Edit: Maybe it's only doing a "fake-flash" of the recovery from inside ROM Manager? Because of this security thingy on /recovery? If so, how do i permanently update the recovery? Is it only possible through unrevoked? And if i use Alpharev, will ROM Manager then be able to permanently update the recovery?
Yes you are right assuming it has to do with s-off. Koush circumvented this by using fakeflash which is automatic applied when rebooting using Rom manager.
And yes making the phone s-off will make Rom manager able to flash the recovery, but it won't because at the time it was made s-off wasn't available. So it will need an update from koush.
To flash a recovery you download it as an img file to your computer and flash it using fastboot.
Okay, thanks for the answer.

[Q] how to remove amonra recovery

So I don't want to unroot. I have amonra, clockwork, and rom manager. When I boot into recovery it goes straight to ra recovery, I have to flash the update.zip to get to clockwork. I would just like it to boot straight to clockwork or to remove ra
I installed rom manager the other day and updated to the latest version thinking that would overide ra when booting to recovery from rom manager, only for ra to come up saying 'bad' update.
I know this will more than likely be simple, I have done a few searches but not found much apart from unrooting.

you need to re run unrevoked and untick use custom recovery so it flashes clockwork or use custom and select a clockwork recovery of choice
its in the clockworkmod thread in the dev section and the amonRA thread
please read them
Hello!
You need to unrevoked again....Downolad unrevoked for your phone, BEFORE to plug your phone to your computer go in the up left corner and choose your recovery , wich can be amonra or clockwork mod, let computer do the job and voila! You are donne
Thanks you very much dudes. I was a total noob to all things root when I did mine and just followed steps from a mate. I couldn't remember how RA got on there. Cheers

Hey, so I hope you guys check this. I tried running the unrevoked again.
Only for it to seemingly get right to the end and attempt root (I thought it was just going to reflash and slap the clockwork in there) for it to say Error: failed to get root - Is your firmware too new?
Is there an easy way around this? Or is it the rom I am running??
I haveOxygen-20. RC6

You don't get 2 recoveries. If you 'fake flash' using ROM Manager it'll lose CWM instead of your normal recovery
You could try to S-OFF with AlphaRev iso (which will also update the recovery to CWM-AlphaRev 2.5.1.8 with dark blue color)
When you are S-OFF you can update the recovery with fastboot
If you don't want or cannot do all this, you could try to fake flash the CMW 3.2 recovery when you need it.
Fake flash means to load another recovery (3.2) while in recovery (2.5) by simply applying a zip file. You then have all the feature of the 3.2 recovery without permanently installing it.
1) put the zip with 3.2 recovery on your SD card (zip in thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1039954)
2) boot in recovery
3) apply the zip (like you would flash a rom, but it only loads the 3.2 recovery operating system without removing/deleting any file in your phone). You should notice the text color change and a few more options in the menu.
4) enjoy
Fake Flash is more or less what what Rom Manager is doing when you use it to reboot in recovery mode (but it only supports a restricted set of recovery versions that have been tuned to work with Rom Manager).
Another benefit of fake flash is that you can still use your old nandroid backups, as it it not recommended to restore with recovery X a backup made with recovery Y.

[Q] ClockworkMod and ROM Manager

I have a ROM Manager Premium license, which is still telling me that ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 is the current version. However I've found from the Desire Index in the Dev forum that the latest is 3.0.0.5. I'm running the AlphaRev S-OFF bootloader so I've used fastboot to flash the latest recovery to my recovery partition.
If I boot into recovery manually then all is well and good, I get 3.0.0.5. But if I use ROM Manager to either boot into recovery, or to take a Nandroid backup, then this happens using 2.5.0.7 (I assume the phone must boot into the 3.0.0.5 from the recovery partition, and then fake-flash 2.5.0.7 from the update.zip). However I've deleted the update.zip from my SD card so where is 2.5.0.7 coming from?!
I have two questions regarding this:
1) Is it possible to make it so that ROM Manager doesn't fake-flash, and just uses the recovery system which is already in place on my recovery partition?
2) If not, should I be concerned that my backups are being taken with 2.5.0.7, but if I ever had to restore one then I'd have to use 3.0.0.5 as that's what's on the recovery mode and if I can't boot into ROM Manager I can't fake-flash 2.5.0.7 to restore?
Cheers!
I've read yesterday another topic, because I also wanted to update mij Clockwork.
What I've read was that the update.zip in the recovery mode is only for the time you are in recovery mode. If you boot and come back later into Recovery mode then it's the old version again.
You have to Root again, because only then the new version will be Flashed on your phone.
I'm not the expert, but I would be surprised if you can not restore a backup with a newer Clockwork version later on.
Good Luck

[Q] Different Clockwork Recovery Versions

I have a rootet Desire (via unrevoked) with s-off and Oxygen 2.1.3 ROM. I flashed a new clockwork version (3.0.0.5) .img file via ADB. If I boot my phone and enter the clockwork recovery the new version is used. If I reboot the phone using ROM manager it enters the old version of clockwork recovery.
So I think, I have 2 recovery versions on my phone. How can this be avoided? I just want to have the new one.
Found this in Cyanogenmod forum.
CWM 3.0.0.5 is permanently flashed so it's always there. 2.5.0.7 is a temporary recovery as when you reboot with rom manager, it uses the zip file that comes with it
