Hi, there!
I use Froyo, unrooted, for new apps the sd card is set as default place for installation.
This morning I have tried to test how many apps can be put on the phone. I have reinstalled some not so useful apps from the sd card (where I have stored them in the course of the last months).
Some app had problems to install, the process would not finish. So I switched the phone off and on again. After reboot, the apps installed on the sd card are not being found any more. Neither is it possible, to install an app from the Market, the installation process does not finish.
In the settings menue, the sd card and its distribution of the used and free space is shown correctly, as is the free internal memory with 26 MB. But it is not possible, for instance, to use the removal of the sd card function.
It is clearly no issue of the sd card as such, I would say - apps which are installed on the phone (like tuneWiki, due to the use of its widget) have easy access to the sd card.
Every suggestion how to resolve the issue is welcome!
Issue resolved: Via menu -> applications -> administration -> only running apps I was able to halt some applications (the regular task manager is installed on the sd card as well, of course), amongst which was an app called package installer. Apparently, that was the solution, since after a new reboot, everything works fine again.
I'm not so lucky I Had the same problem as you a few hours after installing the new OTA update (and some other apps, dunno if it is related). Sadly my phone didn't show how much storage was on the SD card. And after a hard reset the PC wouldn't even recognize it. I think the phone killed my sd card

Hi!
I tried searching the forums for the problem but couldnt find anything related to mine!
I have a problem where the phone suddenly just says "No write access to file" when i try listening to stuff on spotify, take pictures etc... Yet i can access the SD on ASTRO.
Has anyone else noticed this one? Any tips? Rebooting the phone fixes the issue for a while.
Same issue here. I found in other android related forums a lot of people complaining about this as well - seams there's no solution yet (reboot helps in my case - format the card didn't). Some people reported that a change of the sdcard hasn't solved anything. I guess we have to replace the device.

Don't give up yet, if you are running a task killer, remove it and try without it.
As I said on the other thread, I removed it and I'm now testing it. Atleast now it seems to sync Spotify's offline playlists without errors..

I have no task killer running but still the above mentioned issue. I also removed the sd-card and put it back in several times. I cleaned carefully the contacts of the sdcard, removed ALL apps but it still happens every other day.
And no, the desire wasn't plugged into the pc via USB. m(
i had the similar kind of issue. when I switch on the phone from standby mode.. sometimes it says "cannot backup the phone data.. SD card not accessble". When I opened the Estronge File manager I can see no files under the SDcard..
This problem has started to me only after I have installed ebuddy and started using it. Then I have uninstalled the ebuddy and till now i did not get this problem again (3days tested after uninstall)
You can give a try by uninstall any recently installed apps.. my doubt is some apps are creating this issue on slow writting SD cards (my Sd card is Class 2)..

Been there, done that! *sigh* It happens also with no apps installed (plain stock)
Also just happened to me after installing a Touchdown update - camera was reporting no access to SD card and Astro (file navigator) was showing some weird behaviour (opening the 'download' folder took me back to the home screen)
A reboot appears to have solved it but a bit worrying
Not sure if this is 100% related, but I'll include it here. This didn't happen to me at the start but has started happening in the last few days.
I've had my phone set up to connect by default as a disk drive without asking me. Now when I connect to my computer, I get the message on my computer that there is something wrong with the drive and it needs to be scanned and corrected. I don't because I don't always trust Windows auto corrective measures, you can't always go back.
The problem really kicks in when I connect my Desire to the computer and it (the computer) says card needs to be formatted. As soon as I get this message, I know it's all over. I can't access the SD card on computer or from the phone. When I disconnect, the phone says the SD card is empty, and I get the small SD card with question mark up in the top right of the notification bar.
My system is running Win 7 x64.
I get the same problem every other day with the "cannot backup the phone data.. SD card not accessble". I also got an error message when trying to download an email attachment saying that there was no storage space but Astro shows around 6gb free on the sd!

you have another sdcard than the stock SanDisk 4GB card, I guess? If so, could you tell us what sdcard you are running?
I have had the same problem as reported above (backup error) recently. A reboot solves it, but not permantely.. (I also had a problem where the home screen froze, but the lockscreen worked fine. I guess it could be related but I don't know...)
It's a bit annoying with these kind of problems..

It just happen again after I replayed to a text messages..
I started my terminal emulator and checked if the sd card was still mounted (which it appeared to be). But noticed that it's set to remount as read only on errors (Not saying it's the problem, just that it may be the cause of the symptoms..)
Then I checked the rights (ls -l -d /sdcard) It was set to ---rwxr-x (owner: system, group: sdcard_rw) = Owner has no rights, group has full right and others read & execute only..
Also one thing I noticed was that the date was set to 1970-01-01 01:00 (aka start of "unix-time"). That can happen, but it still seemed a bit strange..
BUT: Apparently, that is the way it's "supposed to be", as after a reboot it says the same..
This was just an update on my experience with this error, and what I've tried (so far)..
Stock Rom and card and it is happening to me periodically.

Update: A working solution?
I read on another forum where they (Vodaphone actually) recommended that you reformat the card if you have this sort of problems... So I thought: What a heck.. It can't become worse..
These is the steps that I did (pretty straightforward..) and it works (for about two days now without any big problems..)
Backup the card
You probably don't want to do that using Windows... (You can download free Linux Live-CDs from Ubuntu.com or other places)
Why?? For me, and I don't doubt you may encounter something similar, Windows wanted to reformat the SD Card before it mounted it (DON'T do that if you want to backup your files [and I'm not sure on what the phone would think about that]).
I guess it could work Fine in Mac OS X (but I haven't tested..)
Reboot the phone (mine had trouble recognizing the card after I had disconnected it from the computer)
Go to Settings > SD and phone memory (* ) >Unmount SD Card > Format SD card
Reboot again (not shure if it's needed but just to be sure)
Connect to the computer and put your data back on (be careful, the best is perhaps to only transfer "your stuff" and not replace any files that already are on the card). AND BEFORE you pull out the cable, make sure you unmount the card from your computer!!!!
Done!
(* Translated from Swedish, don't know what it says exactly in English.. )
If you need directions for how to use Linux for this, feel free to contact me..
Try doing a google search for h2testw its a bit of software that can be downloaded that test SD cards and removable drives. I recently had a problem with a new card ran that and it told me that the card had a problem, I sent it back and got a new card and don't have any problems now although they were different to what you were experiencing.
I get the same issue about once enery couple of days. I'm first alerted to it when I get a notification saying the automatic backup has failed, then no writes are allowed to the SD card. It's solved temporarily by rebooting.
Phone is stock, Orange ROM, stock 4Gb card. I use HTC sync and often use the phone in disk drive mode.
Simple damaged SD card...

All my issues disappeared after i removed the task killer.
Just today, I've started getting issues. It *only* happens when I try to open Spotify. It was working fine this morning on my way to work, but now every time I open the app, the SD card gets mounted as read only. I have used Quick App Clean Cache, and wiped the cache within Spotify itself. Rebooted, powered off, removed and reinserted SD card, and nothing fixes it. ****ing annoyed and pissed off that this keeps happening.
Hi,
I've updated to CM 12 Nightly ROMs (currently 12-20150216-NIGHTLY-a5), with a clean install, to get away from the restrictions on SD cards in 4.4.4.
Although I do seem to have SOME access to my card at seemingly random times, I mostly do not. I've seen nightlys which stated they've fixed SD card issues and have updated to them, and for the past couple of weeks, I've been updating multiple times a week. But at present, I cannot even move what seems to be less that 2MB in most cases to the SD card, even with a root-enabled file manager (Yes I am rooted). Do I still have to edit user rights for my owner account?
I've gone into my app preferences and chose the SD card as my preferred install location as well, but it seems that this option will only install to the emulated/sdcard0 directory. I get the same result if I use the app manager and choose "Move to SD Card".
I constantly have to purge info from my internal memory just to even be able to update apps. I have about 54GB free on my SD card according to my phone. the 10 or so gigabytes used are from a manual backup that I had performed before flashing, using my PC only.
Could anyone please help me with this?
Please? Anyone?
Hmm,
Seems most of my issue was fixed just by using ES File Manager instead of CM File Manager. I still don't have much space at all to do anything special, nor can I install Apps onto my real SD Card...
I've been exploiting my mobile at it max since I got the Marshmallow update. Adopted a UHS-1 Samsung EVO 32GB card and used it to its limits.
It has been working fine until today, I woke up to a app screen where all my SD card apps were disconnected and said "App not installed", immediately I went to Storage settings and there I saw that around 100mb was left in my SD card and the bar was red. When I opened it, all the subheading, that is, music, images, videos, all of them show 0.00bytes whereas downloads folder could be accessed.
Tried deleting some files from SD card, managed to get some space from that downloads folder but it didnt work, now the strangest thing started to happen. I tried uninstalling the apps that were on SD card which showed "app not found" and I managed to uninstall them and this also freed up space on my card. Restarted my phone, still no luck.
Next up, I tried migrating data onto my ORIGINAL internal storage (8gb), and it did transfer some data, after maxing out, it said "data left at original location".
All in all, my problem is, that I'm not able to properly mount my SD card, the data is there, but no app is able to access any of it except the internal functions of HTC, like 'migrate' and all.
Need help, please let me know what should I do.
Another question is, if I root my mobile without the SD card and then re-insert the 'adopted sd card' after the root, will it read it? If that would be the case, I'd root my mobile any second. Thank you, eagerly waiting for your replies.
moto G5 2gb version.
I have a Toshiba U3 32gb card set as internal storage formatted in the phone. This card was previously used in my G4 and was fast and worked flawlessly as internal storage.
when I install an app manually from the play store, I get an "insufficient space" error. as per the FAQ that the error links me to, I reboot the phone but then get a message saying SD CARD MISSING REINSERT DEVICE while the card is still in the phone. I then have to reformat the card but the problem will still present itself when I try to install an app again. or just reboot the phone. the card works fine as removable storage, which is kind of useless for the internal apps.
ive read similar faults for the other G5 variants in the forum and online and couldn't find a fix unless I missed it.
Remove the sd card from the device - wait a few seconds then reinsert it (whilst the phone is on & fully booted)
Is that a permanent fix? I've tried removing and inserted a most times still recognise card.

You get corrupt sd card sometimes when you install new rom or wipe dalvik/art cache
Normally removing the sd card & reinserting it whilst phone is fully booted allows it to mount successfully
I use my sd card as external removable storage - I don't use as internal as I don't see the point - this phone has 16gb storage - you will never fill it with just apps - anything else you put on external
Plus you need a very high class sd card to get half decent read/write speeds if set as internal
I've not installed any roms, the phone me is completely stock (o2 network version).
I do need it as internal storage as the external storage only seems to store camera photos and not much else. Even whatsapp media is stored on the phone, but will store on the sd card if it's set as Internal Storage. the card itself is a U3 class and i know it operates faster than a class 10.
I just tried taking a photo with card set as external and the camera shuts down with an error after taking a photo. Works fine when I tell the camera to save to phone.
Going to try format the card on the pc and see what happens as it's clearly not working as an external card even tho the phone isn't flagging any issues.
update;
sd has been set as internal for the last few hours so thought id give it a reboot now, and guess what, SD CARD MISSING. i can tell something is definitely wrong. apps stored on the sd are failing to load or are loading after a really long time ie. 1min for 9gag and the QuickPic galllery app just fails to load. speed test on the sd while in the phone report 5mb read and write! on the G4 the same card was in the double figures.

Many people have issues with sd card set as internal across various devices
If your phone is on stock & unmodified take the issue to Motorola
Obviously ignore them if they tell you that you need to factory reset & all that rubbish - tell them you already have
Sometimes it's just a case of a phone not liking a certain brand of sd card
There's no known fix for your issue that I'm aware of

ive arranged for a replacement with o2 but their stock is scarce at the moment. so will update when i get the new phone.
you could be right that its just the phone not liking this specific sdcard. tried a class4 but that was too slow to even attempt a trouble shoot lol.
new problem, YT Studio app fails to load, says Something Went Wrong. this just gets better and better. thanks for the advice.

Just tested the app on my phone & yt studio works fine
If I was to guess I would say you have a google play services issue - if Google play services was on your sd card running as internal & it isn't in your phone mounted correctly YouTube & other apps that require it will not work
You can either clear data of Google play services from the app settings menu (make sure you have set show system apps from the 3 dot menu on top right) or reinstall it - you will have to search on Google for the apk as normally it's not listed in the playstore

cheers bud. ill give that a go, if that fails, ill just do a fresh install and not auto install any of the apps from my google backup.
just dug a bit deeper and found this https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-G...ible-SD-Card-for-Internal-Storage/m-p/3661072
its the card im using. it baffles me how a fast card is running so slow.
hi folks,
So i chose the wrong SD card handling (the merged kind?) a while ago and after ejecting the card to set up a bigger one, I realise I now can't access the internal storage on the phone.
installed apps work fine
I can remove apps fine (but not reinstall!)
i can sideload apps fine (oddy!)
I cannot access e.g. photos with gallery apps
file browser apps cant access the internal space at all.
I cannot install anything from the play store, it just shows insuffucient space
apps like twitter crash.
whatsapp works (calls and text), but cant download photos sent, or attach photos.
There is loads of space free (14.65gb used of 32gb internal).
I also have an SD card with loads of space now set as portable storage.
I have the original SD card that was in before, but not in phone (still shows in storage manager).
Any ideas please?! Before i reset the phone and start again!
I have rooted it, but not sure what to fiddle with (the problem started before rooting).
nope? ok i guess i'll be wiping and hoping that fixes it!
moving to another phone for a while...
just to be clear, doing a full reset on the phone while rooted with magisk is ok? (unlocked bl). don't want to brick. android 10 up to date.
thanks, if anyone out there?
alright for the record and anyone else suffering this, i figured it out, and is slightly embarrassingly stupid.
if you set up the sd as combined storage, and still have the sd, put it back in and use the migrate data back to internal option which is hidden in the storage dot top right menu. voila.
then you can eject card, and still access the internal storage.
what you do if you've already wiped the old sd, i've no idea! you're maybe stuffed? hopefully wiping phone would fix it??
don't ever set your sd card as merged, use portable (i knew this, was a mistake).
so anyway, phone working again yay!
