[Q] Phone shutting down at 10% - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
my Desire always shuts down at around 10% battery left. It's the same with different battery widgets, so I think it's not the app.
Is that a false readout or is there a setting hidden somewhere that let's the phone shut down early before the battery runs out to avoid data loss?
If so I would like to disable that and squeeze the last bit out of the battery.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

the same happens to me after calibrating,,,

I did recalibrate my battery, mine decides its had enough and turns off at 4-3%, so pretty happy with that.
But 10% isnt bad - from 10 to 4 % is like 20 minutes, so meh.
Some guys phone shuts down at 14%!

Happened to me at 13% straight after calibration. Now it's always a "surprise" to see when the phone shuts down.

When you say calibration,what do u mean?How do u recalibrate your battery?Thanks
Sent from my Archos5 using XDA App

Just proves the "calibration" does not do anything else but change the point of reference to display the percentages @ different voltages.
If you're having bad battery life, the calibration does not do anything. I hate how people think its some kinda magic trick.
Just think through what can be eating the battery, check bad apps, update intervals, etc.
Can't remember what helped with the messed up % monitor, but there is a way to reset it.

Is my phone the culprit?

So like everyone else my battery life sucks. No big deal. I bought the extended battery from Sprint, and I can see the battery diminish in front of my eyes. I mean dropping 1 percent per minute. Is there a way to test the phone to see if it is the culprit?
Sent from my PC36100
ther are lots of ways to check things. does it drop 1% a minute all the time meaning you only get 100 minutes? does it only do it when you take it off the charger at 100% where ti will drop to any where from 99-90% in a matter of minutes?
if the later then thats normal and is because the phone doesnt have a trickle charge. this means that the phone charges your battery to 100% then stops however the indicator on the phone will not change it will still show 100% once the acctual power reaches 90% the phone then charges again up to 100%. what this means is once you take your phone off the pwoer if it has been sitting there even if it says it is at 1005 it can be any where from 90-100% which the battery quickly changes to over first few minutes.
If it happens past 90% and all the time then something is wrong and you likely have at least 1 if not more apps running wild on you, you have things set to sync constantly, and you have everything under the sun turned on for your phone.
for apps the paid version of system panel is very nice for monitoring you can go to monitor top and top apps and see which apps are using the most battery/cpu.
witht he information you have given that is aobut the best i can tell you. I would not say everyone has crappy battery life with the evo as i have slowly gotten my phone set up and now with moderate usage i can get 14-15 hours and at least 8-10 with very heavy usage(stock battery) which i dont consider to be crappy battery life.
I appreciate the response, and I forgot to add that I'm running stock unrooted sense. This is not my first Android phone so I know about battery managing. I don't have everything sync every two minutes nor do I have everything turned on. It does drop rather quick even past 90 percent. I think it might be the phone it self. I doubt I got 2 bad batteries, one being extended. I'll see if I could get a device swapped out.
Sent from my PC36100
My first EVO was like that. It drained quickly shortly after charging. I could never figure it out. Till one night before going to bed, I noticed something weird about the bottom keys on the phone. They were " very dimmly " lit. The home, menu, return, search were all dimmly lit. It was I believe a defect in the phone. I got it swapped out. No problems like the 1% drain since then.

Battery Life help (stays green even while charging)

Im running GVillian 1.5 on my G2, my battery at stock would go green at 100% only.
I plugged in my phone at 55% and by 57% it went green, It was charged for about 25 minutes. I went to check on it and it stayed at 57% and I was like wtf..
I rebooted my phone and than it said 90% (I was assuming that my battery indicator app froze.....maybe because of my task killer)
My main problem is this: Why does it turn green at 90?
Secondly: Why did it charge from 57% to 100% in 27 minutes?
Is the calibration incorrect?
My battery also looses life semi-fast.. not as fast as others from there posts I had read.. But none the less, I can atleast SEE the numbers go down as im posting threads (browsing the net in general)
THANK YOU!
I remember reading somewhere that with CM (of which GV is derived from), it's expected behaviour that the charging LED will go green after 90%. At least that's the behaviour I'm getting on my phone as well.
If you're worried about battery calibration, I'll suggest you charge to 100% and then wipe your battery stats. There's a guide on how to do this (including doing a full calibration with draining your battery completely).
I think it's a debated issue, but I don't use task killers - they seem to me like more trouble than they're worth. Also, if you google for "Android Task Killers Explained" you'll find an article on why you shouldn't be using them anyway.
Afaik the kernels show green at 90% because the batteries often cycle charge up to 100%, drain back down to 90% and charge back to 100% when you keep them charged in order to not damage the battery. Because of this, anything over 90% is a "full charge" according to the phone.
I uninstalled my task killer and using watchdog..
My battery dies even faster.. at 100% using atk, I don't loose percent for like 25 mins..
With atk gone and watchdog replaced I went from 100 to 96 in about 15 mins
I'm going back to atk
You can't calibrate a l-ion battery for crying out loud. Back to topic....my battery stays green till I hit 25%, not sure what the big deal is.
You know you can kill running services from settings built into your phone right?

Chill man. You might try understanding something about the phone before stressing yourself over a irrelevant fact. It's called "calibrate battery stats" meaning it re-calibrates the status and parameters of the battery on the phone. It doesn't touch the battery.
Also, he's not talking about the battery icon on your screen - he's talking about the LED behind the speaker.

We're not calibrating the battery, we're calibrating how the phone reads the battery. Yes it may be a misnomer, but it's a bit easier to say.

This battery life isn't normal right? Bad drain

I cant tell if it's always been like this. Or if this actually isn't normal because I'm always concern with battery life. Im a very heavy user in the sense my phone will be on and im texting, xda, social apps i.e google +, email check every hr, and twitter.
However, i started feeling like my battery has been draining alot faster when the screen is on. I have no problem with the phone sleeping. I was experience this on Calk rom and now acs ics rom. I literally can look at my battery percentage drop 10% in like a half hour. Is this normal if screen is on the whole time? I've used better battery stats and system panel I can't find anything causing the drain. I see the suspend and events but doesn't that effect the phone sleeping?

Are you on the new modem? Looks like you have weak a signal. EG31 might help a little if your not on it already. I used the full EG31 tar right when it dropped and have been getting great battery life (it may be to early but so far so good)

turn your display down to under 50% you won't see a difference except outside in daylight and kill this app every time you reboot the phone hit Settings>Applications>Running services then hit DRM content > stop > ok
I get over a day on one charge.

Ok ill try the drm content stop..however my display brightness is already down at like 10%.
Also, kill the Social Hub as well, that drains the battery significantly.
You might try one of several roms available in dev. They address most of the aforementioned issues.

The biggest battery drain reason is the location by wireless network option. Make sure its unchecked. Ever since I did that, my battery life has been awesome. I get to keep my brightness high, Bluetooth on, etc...

All the basics (brightness and all that stuff) on top of the stuff you have running. The darn task killer/manager I see in the icon top left of your screenshot is a HOG on resources check the caching... You can literally **** with these phones for half a day to set it up the right way to conserve. I think wireless is hogging too but I am talking primarily about the first part of your rapid loss, the left part of the graph so to speak.

I purchased an extended battery and was still getting crappy battery life. SpareParts always FC'd on me... but last night I found Badass Battery Monitor in the market and in my opinion it's even better than SpareParts!
It helped me find that the Hotmail app was keeping my phone awake for almost an hour every day even though I had it set to download email only once a day. Removed that right away.
Plus it gives a great % readout in notification of the battery level. I think it's a fairly new app, but it really is worth checking out especially if you're having battery drain problems.
Just killing Social Hub has increased my battery life significantly. I'm at 11 hours now on battery, with 62% left. This is from last night when I unplugged the phone at 100%.

I'm on the Sydnicate Rom there isn't even no social hubb app. He has alot of the mods like noCiq and everything. My phone sleeps well its just when I start using it I can see it basically draining like 10% every half hour. I'm a heavy user I know my phone will drain fast while I'm on it I just would expect it to last 8-10 hours on heavy use.
Right NOW:
I'm at 4 hours 12 mins 22 secs at 37% left.
Display Time is 50% 2 hrs 41 mins 51s (Brightness is set all the way down)
Android OS 10%
So I'm assuming in 2 more hours my phone will die. If this is just normal for a heavy user then I guess I have to deal with it?
I was very disappointed with my Epic Touch when I first got it. I was getting a dead battery in about 6 to 8 hours no matter what I did or did not do.
Calibrating the battery seems to have fixed it.
I'm at 73% battery with 8:32 hours up time and I've made about 12 calls ranging from 2 to 10 minutes.
I've also checked voice mails, emails and other stuff.
I just charged the battery til it was full, plugged and repeated until it stayed at 10%, popped into CWM5 and cleared the battery data and then used Battery Calibration from the market (free) and it's like a got a battery upgrade!
As far as wake lock issues, I've not having any of those. I took my charger off the phone around 3:30am this morning (100% charge) and when I left for work at 6:50am, I had 98% battery still.
When I got to work it was down to 96%, I checked my email on the drive there.
I'm trying this out, wish me luck.
There doesn't seem to be any possible way to charge my battery to 100%, unplug it and not have it immediately drop to 99%.

If those screens are both from the same charge, I see nothing wrong with your phone.
you have 17% left, and you have 2.5 hours of screen on time. So you're on target to get just over 3 hours of on screeen time which is completely in the norm for these phones. AND you're over 12 hours. I don't understand what else you could ask for?
People get all caught up on total charge time, but, to be honest, it's completely IRRELEVENT.
If I dont use my phone I'll get easily over 48 hours out of the phone... Screen on time is what matters. And from a full charge, if I were to use my phone for 4 straight hours without stopping, it would be about dead. When the screen is on, you're using the phone, and the display is the biggest battery suck out there. When I do all the tricks to conserve battery, and I set it up right, I get 4 hours screen on time, which is pretty incredible with these phones.
Now, If you WANT to get better then you have right now, a few things are coming into play.
1) Your signal is weak, this will suck power no matter what more then it should, so get better signal if you want some more time out of your phone.
2) If you installed a new rom, and you didn't calibrate your battery properly, you're losing battery life.
to calibrate properly:
a) download battery callibration app from market
b) charge to 100%
c) unplug battery charger and REPLUG IN and wait for 100%
d) repeat step c a couple times
e) while plugged in hit the calibrate battery button in the app
f) unplug phone and use til dead and recharge
This will yeild you the best battery life.
3) De-Theme. Although I use a theme, every theme I've tested, for one reason or another, drains my battery faster then running the stock phone theme.
4) If you haven't done the basic battery saving things, you should do them to help yourself out. Here's a few I use.
a) Turn off background data, you only need it on to use market
b) Turn off, or set sync for all email and social apps at as long intervals as possible
c) dont use any widgets
d) download watchdog lite so you can see when apps are acting up and using extra battery
e) when you're done using your phone, open task manager, kill all apps, and clear memory
f) always leave the brightness off automatic and as low as possible
g) download SETCPU and run your phone at 800mhz, and undervolt as much as possible (50mv most all phone can take)
h) use black or dark wallpapers, on LED screens back means the pixel is off which uses less battery
G will be your biggest battery save. I've also tried using the SUPERFREEZE thing in the dev section and, besides in sleep mode, I saw no adverse effect. If you wanna kill socialhub, fine, but I dont see any noticable difference on my phone with it off.
If you do all these I promise you'll get better battery life.
Wow, I did a proper calibration today and I'm getting great results already. I've calibrated before but I never had cleared stats in CWM or did the unplug then replug charging thing.
Anyways, I after 12 hours I'm still at 35%! The longest I've ever gone before is 12.5 hours. Screen on time = 1 hour 30 min, but some of that was a battery intensive game (puzzle quest 2). Also i'm running calk's rom, so i'm sure that helped.
Thanks kdoggy, i didn't expect to see results this great.
Those are good tips too Jermzz, thanks!

[Q] Huge Battery Drain after Phone reparation

I've brought my Desire Z back for reparation (Mainboard died and replaced by an official repair center).
I've bringed it with my stock Battery fully loaded (I took it from the charger and 30 minutes later it died). When i picked it up, the battery was totally empty. Nothing in it. The Phone didn't even turned on!
It taked a while on the charger, but finally it turned on and was charged to 100% in normal time.
Since that, I experience a huge battery drain. When I release my phone from the charger on 7.30AM, it is dead on 4.30PM with no use! No SMS, phonecall, nothing. Only Gmail sync.
I've tried different ROM's (With- and without sense) and did restore my phone to stock. It doesn't solve my problem, the drain still stays huge, even with no apps installed!!!
I've tried another battery > same problem!
What can this be? Normally, my Desire Z last about 1,5 days oder 2 days when nothing happens. Why it's draining so fast, even if it's not used?
What can I do to resolve this ??

try a new battery? Reset battery stats and give it a few days to actually get accurate readings? 8 hours isn't unheard of especially if your battery is giving up the ghost. give those thigns a try and maybe turn off sync and/or data to see if that makes a differance.

Thanks! I've already tried a new battery, but that makes no sense.
I'm now draining it to zero, i.e. when it's fully dead, and then charge it to 100% for 8 hours. When it's charged, i'll wipe battery stats. Let's see.
When anybody has more tips, i'm pleased to hear them!
Here's a tip: don't drain your battery to zero. This is a great way to shorten the life of the battery, or completely ruin it.
For purposes of battery meter calibration, draining to 10-20% is plenty sufficient.
There should be no problem draining a battery to zero as shown by software. There is a myth/misunderstanding that this is a bad thing because people confuse it with the fact that Lithium Ion batteries can be permanently damaged if they are drained too low.
BUT any device using such batteries will have its circuitry setup to have 0% set to a point above this damaging threshold.
So the "too low" point in hardware is likely to be below the zero point that the phone's firmware and software will let you go to.

x2 I concur with this. No need to fully discharge the battery, one it probably doesn't even fully discharge because I'm pretty sure the software is saving you from yourself, plus when the battery stats are uncalibrated I'm fairly certain it reads as discharged but in fact is only partially thus the calibration is off. Lastly I'm if the opinion that throwing different charge levels works better because it more closely resembles real life charging situations. Also letting it charge for that long does nothing because the phone charges only a trickle when full in order to not ruin the battery, similar to a laptop. Overcharge protection....
Thanks again!
Now I did charge it to full and wiped Battery stats.
After 1hour 30 minutes, it lost 10%. Did only send 2 short mails with Gmail.
Here is the usage chart:
- Screen 54% (Time active 4m 51s), Brightness ~20%
- Mobile Stand-By 20% (Time active 1u 26m 13s)
- Phone inactive 18% (Time Active 1u 21m 21s)
- Gmail 5% (CPU Total 31s, CPU Foreground 25s, enabled 51s)
- Android OS 3% (CPU Total 21s)
CPU is on idle ~10%, as always. I don't see any apps that are burning my battery.
s there something abnormal here?
just compared it with my statistics (running virtuous affinity)...
Mobile Stand-By seems to be very high... i have 4% (time active 2 h 30 m)
maybe radio related?

This stats come from Virtuous Affinity also. I'd had never had any problems with such a drain with my 'old phone'. As soon as I got it back from the repair center, the battery drain is huge.
I've reflashed the latest radio for my phone, made a Superwipe and made a fresh install of Viruous Affinity. Let's see.
I think that 'Cell Standby' is killing my battery. It is at the top of the usage list with 38% and it's all time active. My phone was left it's charger at 7.15AM, now at 9.00AM it lost 20% of it's battery on idle use only. On 9.00AM, I've turned my phone on airplane mode. Let's see if that works.
I will recover the phone to stock tonight. If this isn't working, I'll return the phone to the store.
Even with the phone on airplane mode the battery is heavily draining. My last escape is to remove the SD Card. If the draining continues, then I will bring my phone back.
Does the battery came hot? Like more than normal?
With temp+cpu app you can monitor your temperature.
Because if on idle the temperature's around 25-28 C, you should be alright.
And then you can consider what steviewevie said; lithium battery can be damaged if you go on a too low voltage. Even if the phone as his ''protection'' to not get the battery to a critical level, the battery can loose power even if its not used.
Lithium ion, its cool but not perfect.
Try a OEM brand new battery.

I've seen plenty of people on XDA with this phone and others that have rendered their battery unable to charge by letting it discharge to zero. Yes, there are failsafes meant to prevent over-discharge, but they apparently do not always work. The damage is not "permanent" in that its just the protection circuit of the battery kicking in. But the only way to bring the battery back from "sleeping" is with a special battery meter with boost function, which most people do not have access to. So for all practical purposes, its cheaper to just buy a new battery.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/low_voltage_cut_off
Yes, over-discharge will not LIKELY kill your battery in this way. But there is no point in taking the risk. The battery meter is far from accurate in the best of conditions. So there is zero benefit to letting the battery drain to zero, as opposed to 10 or 20 %, just for the benefit of calibrating the battery meter.
Also, even if over-discharge does not instantly "kill" the battery, running full cycles at the least will shorten the overall life of the battery. Its best to avoid full cycles and charge often.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/do_and_dont_battery_table
Now this is just my experience from reading the experiences of others on XDA. I know there are hardware techs that can give much more first hand experience with batteries and may disagree. But as I figure, better safe than sorry. Especially when you consider there is no real benefit to letting it drain to zero on purpose.

The temp of the battery don't exceed 28 degrees, I test this with Battery Indicator Pro. When discharged, the Voltage is around 3,6 (Which is normal behaviour). When charged, it,s 4,2V which is normal also.
I have already tried a new battery, and it doesn't make sense. Same behaviour.
I'm really clueless, because it drains the battery always. Airplane mode an removal of the SD card makes no difference.
I will return to stock tonight, charge again, and see if it behaves the same. When yes, then I will return the phone as I don't accept such behaviour (Normally, my Battery last 30+ Hours on idle).
Thanks for your tips and help for so far! I will report.

Solution for battery problems

after talking to lg and rogers i found a way to fix my battery bug or what ever it was........
Issue: weak battery-very bad battery life-needed to charge twice a day on normal usage. Lg and rogers both said its a hardware issue and need to be replaced......(IT WASNT)
Solution few easy steps should fix it:
1. Let your battery die to 0%. It drives down by 2%. Turn it on, it will let you turn it back on and shots automaticly back down. do it a few times till it shows0%!!
2. Plug it into your charger and let it charge to 100%.
right now its 2 pm i started using the phone at 9 am haevy!! besides that is my s3 that i used half as much today. Battery life on the optimus G is 60% and on the S3 55%. Battery life of the LG seem to went to normal. they claim its 40% better then on the s3. im trying tomorow on eco mode see if there is a difference.
PS: sorry for my english im italian live in canada and grew up in germany haha
I'm not so sure this is a good thing to do. I've read that you should never allow a Li-Po battery to drain completely because it physically damages it.
Then again, it's hard to find credible information on the subject.
Edit: Wikipedia cites the following article which states that overdischarging will damage the battery: http://www.powerstream.com/li.htm

Damage is when you leave battery discharged for some time, short period = almost 0. Of course there is little damage by doing this but no more than frying your phone at 100% Sorry for my english..
Fixed mine tho my battery life is crazy long now

It calls the placebo effect.
Li-polymer batteries calibrated on factory and they absolutely dont like deep discharging.
By the way LG promised 800 cycles of charging before the battery will start dying. I think in case of full discharge, the amount of cycles will be greatly reduced.
I have provisioned my battery which means going from full charge to 0 three to 4 times when I first got it and I always get a full day with medium use now.

I'm wondering, if this provisioning is so helpful for a battery, why wouldn't they do it at the factory?
After reading your guys' posts I decided to do a bit of a test.. I ran my phone all the way down from 100 to 0.. phone turned off.
Then, I turned my phone on about 5 times which then would immediately shut off onve booted to the os.
Then, I turned the phone on and placed it in the recovery mode.. doing this ensured that the screen stayed on until the phone was indeed drained entirely.
Then I charged it up till 100% before I went to bed, turned airplane mode on, closed the screen and went to bed.
Wake up this morning and looked to see how much battery drain occurred during sleep.
After about 5 minutes of using my phone it dropped down to 97%.. only lost 3% overnight. I was very pleased to see this as it confirms in my case that the phone is able to go into deep sleep.
I've also noticed that my battery seems to be draining slower than before.. before I could surf the web for ten minutes over wifi and lose a full 10% of battery.. so far today I've been on the web, downloading email, messing with some apps for around an hour or so and I'm currently at 86%.. definite improvement I believe.
And FYI this is with eco mode off, screen at 50% brightness, no gps and sync on sparingly. This is also on the latest update (my phone is on bell)

I'd be really tempted to try this, but I've heard so much from so many credible sources that total drain on Li-ion is bad news. Conflicted

It's bad to constantly cycle it full to empty. A full cycle once in a while is fine and on some devices it's necessary to calibrate the battery. Additionally, it's not good to store the battery empty. There's no harm in letting it drain all the way occasionally although killing it then further killing it in recovery is probably overkill.

Indeed, I only did it in the hopes that it would help to recalibrate the battery.. I recently was forced to run a flash back to the original firmware using the kbz method.. I was able to bring back to stock but noticed afterward that my battery life did not seem anywhere near as good as it was prior.
It could be that the kbz I flashed to was the newest updated version and it just isn't as good with the battery life but I felt it was worth trying draining all the way to see if it would help.. it does seem to have helped a bit though my battery still shows that android system keeps awake for 4+hours which is odd..
Anyway, once in a while I don't see it being a big deal.
If anyone is going to attempt the things mentioned here, why not do us all a favor and post some actual numbers from Better Battery Stats (a before and after) for some real analysis.
I'm not implying that anyone is lying, but it is just too easy to perceive an improvement when that is what one is expecting.
The plural of anecdote is not data.

according to my experience, the original one is the best
