HBOOT Problems - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

History:
A few weeks ago: Used unrevoked3 to root, installed the leaked 2.2 OTA.
Two days ago: Was bored so I decided to try cyanogen mod 6.02. Got it up and running, but upon rebooting, it got stuck in a loop during the blue cyanogen boot animation. I said screw it and found the OTA leak again, loaded it and everything works fine...
Except... Last night I was trying to get a new splash image to load, but it wouldn't load. I can't get PB31IMG.zip to load, either automatically upon entering HBOOT, or manually from within clockworkmod recovery. This is the error that comes up when I click RECOVERY from within HBOOT:
Code:
I can't get any SD Checking...
Loading...[PB31DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PB31DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PB31IMG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PB31IMG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
[code]
This happens with ANY PB31IMG.zip. It will not load automatically. I tried doing a new splash screen, so I downloaded a couple, already named appropriately, with the appropriate files [and they worked for other people], but still, it reads out the same errors as above.
So, what can I do? I don't mind doing full, rock bottom, format's/reinstalls, etc, I just need to know how or what to do. I really don't want to mess this phone up beyond repair.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I also can't get any bootanimations to work. Actually, I got a download [from the boot animation thread on here] of the stock one working by mount /system, mount /sdcard and adb push from my computer. But, no other animations will work.
From within clockworkmod recovery, when should I, and when should I not mount /system, /data, /cashe, /sdcard, /sd-ext? I understand the mount USB storage, but isn't that the same as mount /sdcard above?
Some of my troubleshooting from last night [in the wrong thread... oops]: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753788&page=13
Thanks in advance!

Did you format your SD card to fat32? Only thing I know that could cause it not reading.

The card reads perfectly fine any other time. Would that matter?
How should I check? Via windows?

When I plug into this computer [vista], and do properties on the mounted sdcard, it shows File system: FAT. I'm not sure, but that's not the same as FAT32, right? So then, how should I fix that? The normal right-click > format method?
Done.. testing.
EDIT: Nope, that didn't work.
EDIT: Damn.. that DID work! I rebooted into recovery before. Now I just rebooted into HBOOT and it asked if I wanted to update. Damn!
EDIT: Ok, now let me see if I can get a custom bootanimation to work.
EDIT: It did not. Just blank.

OK, I got a new boot animation working. It had to have been my process., I followed this:
Plug in phone
reboot to recovery
Code:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Once booted in to recovery do
Code:
Code:
adb shell
mount -a
It will give you this error. Thats fine (It's just saying it couldnt mount the sdcard which we dont need right now.)
Code:
Code:
~ # mount -a
mount -a
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk1 on /sdcard failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 on /sd-ext failed: No such file or directory
now type exit to get back to your computer prompt.
Now push your bootanimation.zip you want to /system/customize/resource
Code:
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource
now now get back in to adb shell and type
Code:
Code:
cd /system/customize/resource
Then we want to rename the new bootanimation to the vzw bootanimation
Code:
Code:
mv bootanimation.zip VZW_bootanimation.zip

OK, i have verified the procedure above works several times. You can close this thread.
Splash problems fix: format SDCARD to FAT32 from within windows [plug in phone, right click on appropriate drive, format, choose FAT32]. Thanks to blakeem!
Boot animations fix: use correct process. *Entirely from within cmd/adb.*

You can condense pushing the bootanimation down to one step by using the following command:
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/VZW_bootanimation.zip
It'll overwrite the file already there.

Ya, that's actually when I was doing, but decided to leave it spelled out, you know, for the record.

.zip
i had this happen once. when i named it I put .zip on it and that was wrong, i went and found it with astro manager and it .zip.zip so i deleted the extra .zip and it worked. hope this helps. and i hope its that simple for you.

Remove files from system

I'm trying to remove some preinstalled apps from /system/app folder. My phone is rooted.
When I'm trying this over adb it says that I only have Read permissions. What am I doing wrong?
Put the phone into recovery mode then do the adb commands.
You only have read access while booted. R/W access while in recovery.
Mh I tried this but I couldn't even open the shell, said something.sh is missing.
You mean the normal recovery and not Clockworkmod or something, right?
You have to put it in the custom recovery. Clockworkmod or whichever one you use.
Ah okay, thank you, I will try that.
Though I need to use the normal recovery.
I tried it with clockwork now. It works but when I do "cd system" and do "ls" it's empty...so I can't see any app-folder?!
Edit: Oh I forgot - do I need to mount system first using the partitions menu?!

[Q] Boot Animation Troubles

UPDATE: SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much thanks to everyone, esp Zerf!
Okay, So I spent about half the evening last night trying to figure out how to change my boot animation, and I can't get it. I was able to do it before I moved up to Froyo (8.1 leak), but now, nothing. I tried the fix posted elsewhere in these forums, and it didn't work.
So here's what I want. I want the "rotting apple" boot animation from droidboots.com, and I want the "droid" sound to go with it.
First person that comes up with a zip file of only the boot ani, nothing else changes, that I can install in Clockwork Recovery that works, I'll donate $5 to their beer fund. Bonus happy points if you tell me how you did it.
I'm tired of failing, and would just rather it work. PLEASE HELP!?!
Nobody wants to make an easy $5?
I will admit I am much too lazy to actually go out and find the files, but chances are if you've been working at it, you've got 90% of the work done already. Since you've got CWM installed, this should be cake.
1. Boot into CWM recovery, and go to partitions
2. Mount /system
3. go to your desktop, and copy your bootanimation.zip (rotten apple) and android_audio.mp3 (droid sound) files to the same directory as your ADB install
4. Open a command prompt, go into the directory with ADB+the files just mentioned are located, and copy/paste (or just type) the following items:
a. adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media/
b. adb push android_audio.mp3 /system/media/
5. Reboot your phone and enjoy.
6. Donate the $5 to ihftp69's SkyRaider beer fund.

They actually don't go there anymore...they go in /system/customize/resource and they need to be named differently...

Odd, when I flashed SkyRaider 2.2, the files were located there, and when they were replaced in the same location with new files the animations changed properly.
The problem is, for whatever reason, when it changed locations, they changed the file name format. It should have been a simple name change, but it's not, ADB push does nothing but give a blank boot up. I screwed with it for about two hours the other night, and came to the conclusion that I'm:
A) Not knowledgeable enough to do it myself
B) Too Stubborn to let it go and use the Generic one
C) Not going to screw up my phone by not asking for help.
So, thanks for the try!
What flavor of ROM do you have? skyraider needs bootanimation.zip to go into /system/media.. I believe for the original 8/1 leak it's under /system/customize/resource
If you have ROM Manager installed, then go to download ROM and under Ihtfp69.. choose Goodies for 2.2 and you have an option to download a few different boot animations.. with or without sound..
try one of these first and see if you are able to make a switch.. if yes.. then report back.
I'm running the 8/1 froyo update, I've been trying under system/customize/resource with VZW_bootanimation.zip as the file name, as it was stated in another thread that this is the proper way to do it on the 8/1 leak..... I even went so far as to completely copy the "stock" animation, and move all the images, rename them, and make sure all the settings are correct, and trying it that way, nothing.
I JUST did this and it worked for me. I am on the 8/1 2.2 leak as well.
Plug in phone

Now push your bootanimation.zip you want to /system/customize/resource
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource
now now get back in to adb shell and type
Code:
cd /system/customize/resource
then ls *.zip and it should look like this. l = lowercase L
Code:
/system/customize/resource # ls *.zip
ls *.zip
bootanimation.zip VZW_bootanimation.zip
Now we want to rename the vzw boot animation to .back to save it
Code:
mv VZW_bootanimation.zip VZW_bootanimation.back
Then we want to rename the new bootanimation to the vzw bootanimation
Code:
mv bootanimation.zip VZW_bootanimation.zip
OPTIONAL STEP: IF YOU DONT WANT THE DROID SOUND ON BOOT
Code:
mv Droid.mp3 Droid.back
type exit and adb reboot . It should now boot with your new boot animation.
You sir, are a GOD.
DM me your email, and I'll papal you the $5, or send it to wherever you choose!

so you have a bootanimation.zip downloaded to the folder you have adb at? and you followed my steps EXACTLY?
So is it still just showing the stock boot animation?

So now that the boot screen has been changed this is what i get when i try to change it again...
Code:
cannot stat 'bootanimation.zip' : No such file or directory
And i can see the file in the folder....so now what?

Not sure what version of 2.2 you're running. I know on SkyRaider you can't put your boots in resource anymore. They now reside in /system/media. You'd need to:
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media/
You can also push a custom sound to the same folder, outside of the zip. I'll also take this as an opportunity to shamelessly plug the boot animation I created for SkyRaider. It can be found in the Goodies section of ROM Manager.

[Q] SD card can't be mounted - Desire PVT4 after rooting

Hi guys,
I got a problem:
I rooted my Desire PVT4 with unrevoked and AmonRa-Recovery under Linux Mint Live CD. Everything went fine.
Next, I wanted to prepare for flashing a new rom. I did a Titanium Backup and downloaded Rom Manager. I proceeded to do a nand-backup, which it did, I guess. After that, however, my desire didn't recognize my sd card anymore.
Connecting to Windows 7 didn't work either. (It did work before)
So I went and bought a new sd card. I formatted it and put it in my device. Still, no sd card detected.
Along with the new sd card, I got an adapter, so I can now stick the sd card directly into my computer.
Surprise: I could now see both sd cards in Windows. Still, I formatted both after backing up the files on it.
The Desire wasn't able to boot anymore, though. So I went into recovery mode and partitioned the card manually with AmonRa recovery 2.0.1. This did work.
I can boot the Desire now, but it still won't detect the sd card.
Mounting it with AmonRa doesn't work either.
I read, that the problem might be caused by using RomManager on a PVT4 device.
Installing the HTC drivers didn't help and I can't install the google USB drivers. When I try to do so it says that there were no drivers found in the specified directory (""C:\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver")
In the device manager it shows 3 "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" (bought it in Germany, so shouldn't it read "GSM"?). All of them are marked with a yellow question mark. Upon trying to update the drivers I selected "Install software from a list or source" and specified ""C:\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver". I clicked "proceed" but Windows tells me that it couldn't find the drivers. Tried that on Win7 and on my WinXP laptop.
I desperately need help. I'm no pro. Actually I am a complete noob I searched on google but I couldn't find any solution so far.
Since I can't access my sd card (except partitioning in AmonRa, that did work somehow) I can't access any .zip on my sd card.
e. Additional information:
Upon trying to mount in Amonra recovery it says:
""Can't mount /sdcard"
Same, when trying to flash a .zip from sd.
hboot version is 0.93 I think.
I tried the following:
Just fixed it... i think the problem erupted because i have AmonRA recovery and used Rom manager (Clockwork mod recovery based) .. there were several reports
that this may cause a usb brick. ... any way... i searched for how to unbrick it.. and used a clone cd from modaco ((Tinycore.img)) which is linux based to boot from it (with phone connected to fastboot usb) .. and
entered the following commands :
Quote
sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/root
/mnt/cdrom/root/fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
and it enabled the sdcard... i checked the sdcard workability from the recovery (i hadn't format it yet) then thought : WTH, why not to try and restart the phone to see if it will log in normally .. and it did (naturally
because the sdcard block was the thing that prevented it from booting from the very start)...
Click to collapse
Except that I used Linux Mint Live CD.
All I got was:
Code:
sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write/protected, mounting read-only
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/sr0 already mounted or /mnt/cdrom busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sr0 is already mounted on /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/root
bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom/root: No such file or directory
Must I use TinyCore? I read somewhere that it only works for Hboot 0.8 and lower? What exactly is TinyCore anyways?
I almost know nothing about linux
No one?
Now I can't even get a signal anymore. I could cry...
Have you tried this procedure?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
It worked for me when i bricked (pvt1 s-off). The problem seems to lie in the misc partition, which you have patch with the edited img file...
When I get into fastboot mode, where is the option to "'fastboot oem boot'"?
e. Also, my PC does not recognize the desire when pluggin into USB.

You type that into cmd prompt window on your PC.
There are some instructions on SD card fix in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
It happened to me when I partitioned the SD card in windows. Could you chech if your partitions on your SD are both set as primary and also uncheck "Take ownership of filesystem" (or something like that) when you are using the HD utility in linux.
Basically what happened was that the partitions were logical in stead of primary. Banged my had in the wall for two days before I figured this out. Hope it helps.
I'll try the Usb-brick-fix first. But how do I find out which rom version I have? I managed to get my CID by typing "fastboot oem boot" in the command prompt.
e. This is what I get upon writing the command:
http://www.abload.de/img/unbenannt7njw.jpg
e. I noticed, it says "board_bravo.disable-sdcard=1"
what does that mean?

I guess it means that sdcard can't be mounted...anyway, have you done the hexeditor thing already?
I just put the two files on the sd card and rebooted in fastmode. However, I'm not sure about my rom version. Where can I find out which one I have?
e. I just typed "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" in ConnectBot, but it says "cannot create /data/flash_image: permission denied"
e.. When I type in "su" first, it still says "/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory"

Oh sorry, i didn't read that...well i remember i was confused about that too at this point...too bad i can't remember how i found out.
Anyway, i found another solution on modaco:
"2. Enable the SD Card functionality. Boot your phone in FASTBOOT mode (back + power), and enter this command: 'fastboot oem enableqxdm 0' . This will re-enable your SD card.
3. Put THIS (attached) update.zip on your sdcard.
4. Reboot into recovery.
5. Apply sdcard:update.zip.
6. This will automatically fix your MISC partition with the correct CID. Reboot, and your done!"
Try this and tell me if it works in the while
I just booted into fastmode again and typed "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0" into the command prompt.
Now the Desire detects the sd card again
Now I will try to use the cat command again.
e. I just did the thing with the "update.zip". Rebooting now.
e. I got my sd card back and a phone signal. That's great so far. Now what?
Still, when typing
"cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image"
I get
"/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory"
I guess you're done if it worked...are you able to connect normally to your pc now? You should be :s
Also, those commands are meant to be used in a terminal emulator, not on your pc, i hope you didn't misread...anyway if you used the modaco tip you shouldn't need that anymore.
When you're done remember to copy your misc folder to a safe place, it will be enough to replace it via root explorer or similar if someday you'll brick again...
Nope, can't get it to connect to my PC quite yet. But I hope I will get that to work after rebooting the phone and/or windows or installing the htc drivers again.
I can not thank you enough right now. I was going crazy about this. Just bought my desire recently, upgrading from the Legend, with the little spare money I had. It would have been bad, if it was broken now.
So: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Also, someone tried to call me yesterday, while my phone signal didn't work. Now everytime I start the Phone, it shows me my missed call.
My girlfriend has a similar problem with a message I sent her. Everytime she boots her phone, she gets that message (fortunately it's "I love you" ).
So, I guess, it has something to do with the SIM?
Hmm, if you can't connect it might mean that the usb isn't fully restored...could you turn off the phone, plug it to pc, turn it back on and see if drivers get installed properly? Just to make sure...
I am stupid.
Hold on, it might work now. I had to switch to "local" in ConnectBot. Thought the app would remember that, but it didn't
Hmm.
Do I have to be in fastboot mode to type in those commands? Because I did type them in and rebooted, but Windows still will not detect my Desire :/
or should I type them in the windows command prompt?

Sorry, i'm not sure i got ya. How would you run connectbot while you're in saftboot mode?? Because that's what i did, to make it clearer:
1. Downloaded image file "mtd0.img" and "flash_image" (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639) and put them on sdcard (ofc i edited mtd0.img with my CID using some free hex editor before)
2. Installed Android Terminal Emulator app (from market), but connectbot should be the same.
3. Opened emulator, typed "su" command, accepted to give root permissions
executed this commands:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/misc.img > /data/misc.img
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /data/misc.img
4. Rebooted phone, connected to pc.
5. Success
Is this exactly what you did?
Yes. I typed exactly that. I just wanted to type it in again, but now it tells me again, that there is no such file or directory on /sdcard. But I can see the file with Astro being on the sdcard.
e. Maybe I used the wrong rom version number?
e.. Someone suggested to run in fastboot mode and type "fastboot oem eraseconfig". What exactly would this do? Which config would be erased?
What exactly is fastboot?

You just need the CID, not the rom version for this...
Anyway, please note that when i write misc.img i mean mtd0.img, that's what you typed right? Sorry if i confused you.
I guess there's no need to mess further with fasboot, i didn't need it, except for mounting sdcard.
If this still fails, you can always move mtd0.img and flash_image to /data manually via root explorer app, then go on from the chmod command.

[Q] How to put a ROM on read-only /sdcard, while adb shell not working

I've been searching my _ off for two days now to find a solution for my problem, but I can't find one working for me.
What I do have right now:
NO working ROM (I believe because of a failed atempt to revert to a backup in CWM)
Access to my bootloader (unlocked through HTCDev)
Access to my recovery (Which is the latest CWM)
Fastboot/adb working
Phone boots upon the HTC logo screen
NO ROM zipfile on the SD-Card (I accidentilly deleted that, I still hate myself for that)
I've managed to push to ROM file into both /data and /system, which (ofcourse) isn't usefull to flash from because they don't show up in CWM.
What I've tried:
Reverting to a Nandroid backup, I've 2 on the sdcard. Both don't pass the part where /system is being restored.
'asd shell' to push files, or mount the SD card, does not work. First I had the error saying '--exec /system/bin/sh failure: file or dir not found (2)'. I managed to push the sh file into system, (and I believe into /system/bin), and the error changed to '[...] No directory (20)'
asd push /sdcard/; doesn't work because /sdcard is read-only.
In CWM I can't mount as USB storage, is says something about a file which can't be found.
TWRP recovery doesn't work on my device, I can touch whatever I wan't, the only button responding is the power button, which causes a locked recovery, which I can't unlock. (You need to swipe for that, which my phone seems to ignore).
I've read almost every topic on XDA and whatever Google could give me, but most solutions somewhere relied on the asd shell, or pushing into the /sdcard, or simply assume I still can mount as USB storage.
Does anyone have any suggestions left on howto get a ROM into the /sdcard so I can flash it? I would be thanking you forever!
Thanks in advance!
No ADB shell, then adb push *filename* /sdcard?
Maybe sideload a ROM?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I can't push files to the /sdcard since it's an read-only directory.
I tried the sideload part, but instead of executing something, it shows me the help of adb.
Any clue how to fix my shell, or get a ROM on it?
Tried typing 'adb remount' a few times and trying again?
Also, you should update your CWM to latest version so you can mount sdcard

I tried using remount, but that is to remount the /system partition right? I can put the ZIP on the /system partition. But CWM can't install from there.
I'm using the last version of CWM, but it gives me an error about a file not being found, so I can't mound as USB Storage device.
I returned the phone, to the store. I pretty much gave up after another few hours of struggling.
