So when I first got my HTC Desire and installing some applications I of course came across the annoying message telling me I am running low on space.
So I rooted and installed a ROM with AppstoSD, and was happy again. Now I am back to the same issue, keeps telling me I am low. Which is true because after rooting I installed a bunch more applications lol
So my phone says I have 147MB total to use for Applications and such. Currently around 13 to 16MB. Quite annoying.
So with future Android updates or even hacks will applications ever install and run and store everything from an SD card? Because this expensive device I am locked into for 3 years is going to get pretty crappy and annoying if I have to uninstall applications I want to install other ones...
Comments?
Well as a2sd just works by creating a symlink to the ext partition on the sd-card, yous should be able to simply create one for /data/data as well. Because those data foleders are still stored on the data prtition, and those are the ones taking up space.
I Found a guide at some point, but i can't seem to find it now, but try searching around.
I have been looking around, and no luck. Why I started this thead
Anyone else, ideas, know a way?
to make app2sd work you need an ext partition. to do that download rom manager for free from market and create one. i suggest if use to install lots of apps select 512mb partition, set swap to 0mb. but keep in mind before creating the partition you should backup all data from sdcard because it will be formatted to create the partition.
and by the way please edit title cause this is Nand memory that you are refering to.

And I clearly said I have AppstoSD working, it's just not enough.
My main question was simply, will in the future, apps2sd or whatever it will be called allow for applications to be installed, stored and run from the SD. If not my nice new phone is going to get quite annoying and useless.
if you say that you started with 147mb and now have 13-16mb and have app2sd, it means that you have a rom that supports app2sd but not aproperly created ext partition. that is why you are running low.
for example if you have a working EXT and still having left only 13mb on phone it means that you have installed aboout 300to500 apps. that is because although apps get installed on EXT but always leave a trace in phone memory(something like a shortcut).

It's not always just a trace!
/data/data is left on internal memory (for stability reasons) and some apps, for example Google Earth, take up an awful lot of space there.

So you are saying I formatted wrong when I did created the ext partition originally?
That's an exaggeration although on AOSP ROMs, same everything except HTC additions (mainly Sense), I have 35-40MB free while on HTC 2.2 ROMs I'm always juggling between 15-20MB free. I have A2SD fully working, 112 apps on. I don't see it as a big issue for me because I only need approx 85 of them from day to day, but to have the rest on and not have to worry and keep deleting things to keep the phone working would be very handy. Nearly all the quality apps with great features require much memory (don't even ask me about Rockplayers update). Most of them are still using a good chunk of the internal memory even after being "installed on SD card" for some portion but the killers are apps like Adobe Flash, Maps, HTC_IME, Earth, SMS/MMS, cache, emails, bookmarks, widgets and so forth. In fact, I only keep 2-3 emails and a few bookmarks stored in the default applications for this reason.

So... After much hesitation (purely because of worry), I finally rooted my Desire. And yes, it went without a hitch.
I do have that app which says "Superuser Permissions".
Running ClockWork mod recovery/rom 2.5.0.7 (I guess).
I have downloaded the major recommended apps for rooted devices, viz. - Root Explorer, Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
I'd like to know what else can be done now...
My phone's memory is down to 20-ish odd Megs. Thanks to updating Adobe, Facebook, GMail, Maps, QuickOffice and installing Swype.
Is there a way to increase the memory now?
I am running FroYo 2.10.405.2 and Radio 5.09.05.30_2.
Thanks in advance...
You could try a custom rom with apps2sd for starters

Ah ok... Will read-up before going for one.
One more thing, please.
Unrevoked worked without a hitch. And there is no visible difference, either. No change at the HBOOT screen.
Which prompts me to ask: shouldn't it change from S-ON to S-OFF? Or am I getting confused with something else?
PS: apps2sd? I have a software called App 2 SD. Any difference between the two?
Unrevoked dosent unlock your bootloader, if you want to do that just search development for "alpharev" ..... apps2sd+ and the native froyo move to sd are diffrent, the biggest advantage being apps2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache (mine is over 50mb)

Root is not the same as s-off. There is a fix, which flashes a pathced hboot though, which till give you s-off. It is easy, and i prefer to have it, as et makes recovering the phone so much easier, if something happens
For a2sd there is 2 major types. The one implemented in froyo by default, which you already make use of. The app you have allows you to mave pretty much any app to the sd-card. But you will still have the dalvik-cache in the phone memory. The other type of a2sd is what i have experienced to give me plenty of space is usually implemented in most custom roms, and is activated by making an ext-partition on your sd-card(can be done through rom manager).
I prefer the last one by far, and if i should recommend a rom for you, it should be AuraxtSense, which have some great UI changes, which makes the phone look great in my opinion. If you want std. htc sense rom and look, leedroid is a decent rom, and if you want to play around with a rom without sense like the nexus one, you should try cyanogen mod or opendesire
Thanks, friends. Slowly finding my way about these tricks.
Dunno if it is a coincidence - I've never experienced "crash" issues but earlier today, the HTC launcher crashed and I had to live w/o the home screens for a few minutes.
Any idea why this might have happened?
As regards A2SD+
I found this bit by Googling...
1) Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
2) Backup the contents of your SD card somewhere.
3) Connect the SD card to your PC. Make sure it shows up as a drive in My Computer.
4) Load up the Partition Wizard applicatiion.
5) Select your memory card in Partition Wizard (usually at the bottom, look for the drive letter to make sure you don't delete a hard disk). It should have a partition already, probably FAT32 formatted. You need to right click on every partition within your memory card and click Delete.
6) It won't delete right away, these tasks will be added to the panel on the left. Click Apply to make it happen. This will obviously delete everything!
7) You should now have a single chunk of unallocated memory which is the entire storage capacity of the card. Right click on this and choose 'Create'.
8) In the options set 'Create As' to 'Primary' and the file system to FAT32. Leave Cluster Size as default and ignore the drive letter.
9) Now drag the bar below from the right to set the unallocated space after this partitiion. The large FAT32 partition is where your music, videos, pictures and other files will be stored so this needs to be the largest. Make sure you have plenty of room for everything you need. The space after it is where apps will live. Around 512MB should be sufficient though if you're going to be downloading lots of games and other large programs then make it a bit bigger. Click Ok to finish.
10) Now right click and 'Create' on the remaining unallocated space, ignoring the warning message that pops up. Set to Primary again, but this time in File System select 'Ext3' (you can also use Ext2, Google it if you're interested in the differences and want to read lots of debate about which is better). Don't change the size of the partition. Click Ok.
11) Now click Apply and let it do its stuff. Once finished you should have one FAT32 partition and one Ext3. Note that the Ext3 will not be visible through Windows normally so you can't browse the files, but you can delete it and format the entire card back to FAT32 via Partition Wizard.
Important: since all your apps will be stored on the SD card instead of the phone, switching the phone on without the card inside will cause problems, you may not even be able to boot properly. And if you change cards you'll need to make sure you copy the contents of the Ext3 partition to the new card.

I guess ext2/3 terms are Linux-related terms which I am not familiar with... Do I go ahead with this way of enabling A2SD+?
(I suppose folks who rooted without using Unrevoked have another way to enable A2SD+)
Thanks!
Ext2/3 is a linux partition type. Android can use this, because it is of course based of linux. The best thing you can do is backup your sd card and boot into the clockwordmod recovery. From there you can partition your sd card for a2sd+.
I have a 4gb sd card with a 512 mb ext3 partition for my apps.
Hope it helps!
Oh great... Thanks!
So... Does this method actually "fool" the device in to believing that the internal memory is 140ish + what we assign from the memory card?

Yep, but you'll still see it displayed separately. Most of the app's will go to ext partition, only data will stay on internal space. I recommend Quick System Info app for checking space (and bunch of other stuff).

I have a quick question related to all this. I just rooted my desire with unrevoked 3.21 and a recovery image has been installed and it is version 2.5.0.7 of clockworkmod, I guess the latest.
Then I read other posts where people suggest to use rom manager and one of the options is "install clockworkmod" ... but if I have already installed it why should I need it again? Do ROM manager and unrevoked install in different places may be different versions of clockworkmod? then which is the one that will be used booting in recovery? Does this mean that the recovery image installed by unrevoked could be deleted somehow..? There are a lot of controversial explanations in the forums and I really dont have any idea which one to believe. Any expert could explain in easy terms? Thanks
Hi. I was just wondering what are the steps in order to install applications on the SD card. I know it's something about "App2SD" or "App2SD+". I tried searching the forum for answers, but the search returned an overwhelming amount of threads since almost every thread has a little something about App2SD =/. And what's the difference between App2SD and App2SD+; I think I read somewhere it's about the dalvik-cache. Also, what IS dalvik-cache and how it differs from "cache". Also, I know we format the memory card into Fat32 + EXT; so the applications are installed in the EXT partition?
Edit: And while we're at it, what is Data2SD or Data2Anywhere?
Go into the Desire Android Development forum and have a look around there. Just go through it till you find something and read on it.
As far as I understand, App2SD+ moves the Dalvik cache, I think. I have no idea what it is but it's a cache so pretty selfexplanatory. Apps do get installed on the ext partition. Data2SD moves a lot more data to the SD card, a lot more in fact.
I can't give you a definate answer because I personally don't like it. I have tried to get it to work but it's a pain in the arse to do so I gave in. Like I said, have a look around the Desire Android Development forum because there are quite a few topics. Just to get you started.

apps2sd is pretty much the same as apps2sd+, as far as I read...
All it does is move the dalvik cache to the SD card = frees up memory on the internal phone so it'll run faster, and leave more room for the apps that cannot be installed on SD.
You are correct. The bulk of your SD card will be fat32. This is where your music, porn, and pictures will go (tee hee lol). The EXT2/3/or 4 partition is where the apps will be installed to. Typically it's recommended to have between 256MB to 512MB. To do partition this, you can do a semi-complicated procedure through GParted on a computer, or you can just go to the Market, download "Rom Manager" and once installed, it can partition it for you in a matter of about 1 minute. After it's partitioned, you can go ahead and install any ROM that supports APPS2SD/+ and enjoy it's feature(s).
Please note that there is still a massive amount of applications that cannot be installed/author hasn't coded it to be installed on the SD.
EDIT: Data2SD = Each application will grow in size the more you use it. For example, the more you use internet explorer, the more random little cache data will be stored. Thus, the 2MB (I don't know the actual size of the app., this is just for example's sake) internet app. will balloon into a 20MB app. So Data2SD will keep the applications on the phone's internal memory, but will move their data (or cache, etc) to the SDCard. This is another method of saving that ever-precious internal memory, but comes with a speed disadvantage when compared to Apps2SD, so I've read.
Cheers!
True for the most part, except that all downloaded are moved to the ext partition regardless if they are froyo a2sd compatible. If a app supports froyo a2sd usually a bigger part of the app can be moved but all apps are moved. Also you don't want to move the apps to the sd via manager applications because that basically moves them from ext to fat.

Manager applications? Like what? AppBrain for instance?
a2sd+ works performance wise much better for me than data2sd / data2ext
titanium backup can manage that too iirc
I meant the manage applications from within the normal settings menu (settings-applications-manage applications). There you have the option to move them to the sd or to the phone on if they are already on the sd. In this menu they need to be on the phone.

Just be careful not to force any app. over to SD. There are those apps that are meant to stay on the internal partition. Thanks, I'll keep that mind.
I'm sorry but, after all this information, um, how do I actually USE App2SD+? How do I choose whether to install the apps to the SD-EXT or to the internal memory?
Edit: Ok so from what I've gathered after a bit of searching, the custom ROM I'm running on (which should support App2SD+) should automatically move apps to SD? So how can I view the list of apps installed on the SD? And, if it is possible, how can I move them back?
Yep the ROM will manage what goes where. When picking a ROM just take note of what it uses whether it be a2sd/a2sd+/d2ext etc as this is what you'll be using. The data2xx ones are a little more experimental and probably not recommended at this point if you still need to ask these questions (no offence meant, I avoid them too lol).
There's no definitive list of what's on SD, much like you can't move them around because the app will actually be spread between NAND and EXT depending on exactly what it needs. You don't need to ever move them around though TBH.
If moving between ROM's a simple titanium backup will cover your apps and the new ROM will manage where they go.

None taken =). But I just like to know about most features even if I'm not going to use them =).
Anyway, the reason I ask for a way to move them around is because now my widgets are not loading, they give me the "Problem loading widget" error after rebooting the phone... I guess this error appears because they're installed on the SD...that's why I wanna move them back to the internal phone. I can even uninstall the widgets then reinstall them making sure they're on the internal memory, but I don't know how to do that either =/.
Hi.
I'm in a dilemma here trying to.fimd out what is wrong. I formatted and partitioned my 4gb SD card to work with App2sd+ by making 3gb Fat32 Primary and First Partition and 1gb EXT3 Primary, however whenever apps are installed they tend to use the First partitioned instead of the reserved 1gb partition I had created.
Maybe I have done something wrong, since I am quite new to App2SD and how it works, but know the basics. I would appreciate your help.
Thank you

You must flash a rom with a2sd+ support. It's different from the built in support for a2sd, which can be found in the stock froyo roms and above.
Flash Darktremor Apps2SD for Desire in recovery and then use A2SDGUI from the Market to change settings as you like. After that do not manually move apps around. They should me installed to the internal storage which then will be your sd-card.
I failed to metion that I am using Teppic's 'Pre-rooted Stock Froyo (2.29.405.5)' ROM with the optional addon 'App2SD+' so I presume it should work fine
However, I am thinking it has something to do with the app I have installed 'Move2SD Enabler' which I think is moving everything to the External Fat32 partition'.
Can someone confirm?

yes it could be, i wondering the same things about the app2sd with my first flash with custom's rom and ap2sd+ (i uninstalled this app).
to be shure that your sript ap2sd+ is working fine you can brouwse your phone and go to system/sd you should see 4 folders... app + app-private +lost-found and dalvik-cache (for the last folder it's assumed that your script got the little "+" which means that is moving the dalvik cache to your ext partition)
hope this would help you
Another idea to see if a2sd+ is working like it should is to download Quick System Info. When you launch it you should see a line with a2sd info. If it is there then a2sd+ is ok, and you can see how much of you ext3 1GB partition is used.
I used the rom manager to make the partitions, then I format them with MiniTool.Partition.Wizard.Professional.v5.2-REDT when needed, you can resize them as needed ... you can download it at rlslog.net
Wow... Is it really time for another "how does x type of app to sd solution work?"
It really is quite simple:
Froyo a2sd uses a folder on the fat32 and the system controls, where the apps is installed, and where they are moved to.
a2sd+/legacy a2sd uses the ext-partition by symlinking the folders /data/apps and /data/dalvik-cache to this partition. This solution is transparent to the system itself, so as far as the android system is aware the apps is installed internal. This means you can use widgets from apps on this partition, and it also means that your apps will allways be installed here, so you cannot move them to internal. You will also not see the extra space, your apps will just not take up as much space when installed.
If you like you have done move the apps to sd through the froyo settings, you actually just move them from the ext-partition to the folder on the fat32-partition.
Space is limited. (at least the space in our phones)
so I always read about apps2sd, data2sd, link2sd. I'm confused about how all they work, which ist best way to go. the information to read is very diffuse so don't blame me if I open a thread to understand the backgrounds.
So, I installed an app called App2SD (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&hl=de) and moved supported apps to SD.
Now there I have root, I want to get to know about alternatives. So what are the methods out there, what to stick to best?
thanks for your help in advance.

I prefer link2sd based on practical experience with all three methods.
I find it the most customizable and fastest although unlike the other two it's not a set it and forget it solution it allows for some definite benefits in terms of file placement and speed.
data2sd and data2whatever tend to bog down over time for some reason where as link2sd keeps up to speed. Lot's of nice features and a great user interface as well.
It's also easily reversible if you don't like it. I can't say the same for the other two.
Here's a link to the original developer's thread and a little tutorial.
Same, Link2sd never worked for me haha
just installed link2sd, after a lengthy process getting stock rom back from a bad CM7 experience....now have a happy healthy stock rom, perm rootedm with link2sd and virtually all apps on the 2nd sd partition. i've basically gone through the "my apps" list on my market account and "linked" everything that's on the market, and kept the rest (pre-installed/not available on the market?) on the internal memory.
internal mem is reporting 108mb free, and i have a little under 1gb on my sd's 2nd partition.
so far so good...touch wood....fingers crossed
so yeh, i'd vote for link2sd.....it also does seem fairly "automated" to me....whenever i download a new app, it automatically links it and moves it to the 2nd partition (although you can manually move it back to internal if you get roblems with a specific app).
Installed Link2SD now. I like it. thx +1 for you 2
I'd like to know how Data2SD handles over time. Using a single file seems a little monolithic but if it works you can't argue with results.
Haven't anyone tried S2E? It's completely automatic and you don't need to set up anything.

Hey Dan,
I've never heard of the app, but a quick google search suggests it's made primarily for CM7. Link2SD does work well for the most part so I think it would be foolish to jump into something else. I've not seen the battery drain that some people have complained about too. The only real alternative for those trying to avoid custom ROM's is Data2SD, which I've heard mixed reviews about.

Link2SD works fine except for the fact that some apps like maps and gmail cause problems when moved..
And when I start up my phone (no fastboot) it always says low internal memory and then Link2SD starts to link all apps which gives me about 60MB free space
mattio,
gmail causes problems? ive not observed a problem with gmail as of yet, what kind of problems?

just installed link2sd, after a lengthy process getting stock rom back from a bad CM7 experience....now have a happy healthy stock rom, perm rootedm with link2sd and virtually all apps on the 2nd sd partition. i've basically gone through the "my apps" list on my market account and "linked" everything that's on the market, and kept the rest (pre-installed/not available on the market?) on the internal memory.
internal mem is reporting 108mb free, and i have a little under 1gb on my sd's 2nd partition.
so far so good...touch wood....fingers crossed
so yeh, i'd vote for link2sd.....it also does seem fairly "automated" to me....whenever i download a new app, it automatically links it and moves it to the 2nd partition (although you can manually move it back to internal if you get roblems with a specific app).

Hi,
what is the ext that you have on the 2nd partition?
I have ext4 and the Link2SD don't recognize the 2nd partition.
Cump,s
I've been using Link2SD ever since I started using CM. It has been working well for me. No issues with Gmail or Maps. Even my home screen app and keyboard are on the external partition. I just set CM to always keep the home screen in memory. The SD partition is formatted as ext2 because I don't see the need for a journaling filesystem (ext4).
Edit - to contribute to the original question.
I'm not so sure about the other options but I can explain a bit about Link2SD.
Basically what it does is move your application files to the external partition and then create symlinks where those files originally were. Symlinks are tiny files that arejust pointers to where the actual files are. The good part is that the OS does not care. It just sees the symlinks as the actual files. Seeing that it is the actual files that are symlinked, means that you can fine tune it to your needs... as opposed to linking whole directories or mounting a partition to something like/data/app/.

When I move Gmail to 2nd partition (EXT2).
After reboot the app renames itself to com.google.android.gmail in the appdrawer

Whenever I link a app to 2nd Partition it also reduces some of my internal memory. My Internal memory is now showing 81MB free. Can someone please guide what to do for increasing internal memory (i am a noob with rooted WFS)

That's normal, some apps don't tell the internal memory that they were linked to the SD card.
Simply turn your phone off (hibernate) and turn it on again , this should give you the additional free memory
Link2SD
I've tinkered with Data2SD and A2SD also but just don't understand how they work. Wasted time restoring my SD card after wiping it out. Link2SD works perfectly but I see some ROM photos showing a ton of free internal space and can't seem to figure out a way to get that little bit of extra space.

Try these steps:
1) Using Link2SD uninstall all the stock htc application that you dont like and dont need ( Most of them can be removed without any problem -> All widgets, google search, twitter, facebook , facebook for htc sense, plurk, htc likes, htc hub, xms ebuddy, stocks and many more, i forgot the names ).
You can always backup these using titanium backup if you are apprehensive.
2) Backup every application , contact and sms on your phone because we will cleanout our phone.
3) Now when you are ready boot into recovery and clean Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache. If possible also backup your sd card and format both fat32 and ext2 partitions .
4) Reboot and install Link2Sd, Mount ext2 partition and setup to link your files ( from settings ) then reboot and freshly install everything. You will find a hugh difference in internal memory
---------------------------------------------------------
I had 80mb internal memory free with 52 application installed, I did the above things and now i have 110mb free space with 60 apps installed which also includes updates of the remaining stock applications. However after doing all this dont move anything to sd card using your a2sd or applications will get corrupted

Please follow my above tutorial, I am sure you will unleash true power of Link2SD
always lags when I use data2sd, it's very very slow. I use link2sd, no lags anymore
