Hey guys,
I got my brodit active car holder now for a few days and it seems it doesn't supply enough juice to the S2 while in use :-(
While navigating with navigon, it even loses charge, though it's connected .... that's really disapointing, since brodit normally supplies quality products.
Anyone else got the brodit active holder with the same problems?

Not got the Brodit, but I have the same problem when using CoPilot and charging via the USB cable attached to a car charger. It can keep the charge at current level with CoPilot on, but will only charge with CoPilot off.
Also noticed if SII has less than 50% charge, it won't charge at all with CoPilot on.
Taking a punt on one of these to see if it makes a difference:

Which holder do you have exactly? Can you make a photo?
Does it toggle car dock in the S2? You can see a steering wheel in notification bar.

I was thinking exactly the same thing this lunchtime. I have the cigarete lighter active Brodit mount and - if i makes any difference - a 2004 Vauxhall Astra H. I as wondering if I would have to turn off the nice things [like satellite view, etc] on the phone for it to survive the journey. Not happy.

Yesterday I modified a Brodit active car holder from the good old htc HD2 to fit the S2. Now I have fast charging (AC) and Car-Mode.
I currently own some chargers. Not the original one, well the UK Version with no use in Austria.
A 1A HTC Charger with USB socket, a 450mA noname charger with USB socket and a no name car charger with micro usb.
The car charger and the HTC charger show charging(AC) whilst the noname 450mA charger shows charging(USB)...
It would be interesting to measure the exact mA taken by the phone...

Hi all,
Okay, I've now tried four different chargers, and I've also had the phone replaced. Today, in a last attempt, I bought an official Samsung charger.
NONE of them work - even though the phone says "charging on AC" for all of them.
The only thing I haven't tried is a different car (which I'm going to do, once my neighbour gets home).
The one sensible suggestion I've read is that Samsung have screwed up somewhere in software and the phone can't draw enough juice.
Electronics is beyond my little brain, so I don't get why the GS2 charges from my netbook (even when it's only on battery) but won't charge in the car.
And I'm not talking when I'm using satnav. It won't charge at all. In fact (weirdly) it actually DISCHARGES much faster than it does if it's just sitting in my pocket.
I've logged this with my provider (Voda UK), because I refuse to get stuck with a useless phone for the next 18 months if this isn't sorted out. It's ludicrous. If I can't charge the phone in the car it's as good as useless to me.

Okay, I just tried my neighbour's car (Vauxhall Astra) and the GS2 charged perfectly. 3% in four minutes. Pretty much what I get off the mains charger.
I wish I knew about electrics but I don't. Explanations will have to come from the boffins round here.
I tell you what, though. I don't really want to get a new car just to use my phone properly
Do you have any chsrger with a led?
If the led stays dark the cigarette lighgter of your car might need a new fuse.

So what charger do you guys advice? Which charger does charge the phone, even while navigating with Navigon?
I got the Brodit active charger (BR512...), there isn't a problem with charging at all.
I think the issue you got is really car related. My guess:
a) your cigarette lighter port is poorly wired -> Measure voltage at the port with a voltmeter, it should be at least 12V DC (Edit: Even if it does there is still the possibility that your wiring is bad, showing 12V doesn't mean it can handle the current this charger needs)
b) your cigarette lighter port doesn't make a good contact to the brodit plug. Check for corrosion of the contacts, dust, dirt, etc. Some ports go bad after lots of plug in / out cycles.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about here, I'm pretty sure every car mechanic can fix your problem for a small amount of money
Edit: it's very possible this plug works with other chargers and phones and still fails with the S2 charger. The reason for this is the different ways chargers convert the car's 12V DC into 5V DC. Some might work down to 7V input, some already **** up at 11.8V
I have the same problem with my GSII trying to charge it with my 12V Ipod adapter...
I just arrive from a short travel with my Citroën Xsara and i almost got lost cose the phone discharged all the time while using IGO on the phone...
I don't think this is car related because there are so many people with different cars having this problem... so... Samsung wants me to buy a new car to be able to use their phone in travels?
Hi guys, just thought I'd try to clear up a few of things:
1. All phones can use more power than they can draw. Note that the more apps you use, the more juice you draw depending on their features.
2. Not all CLAs are the same. Most modern devices will need 2amps, but the majority of CLAs on the market are 1 - 1.2amp units.
3. Your device will stop charging if it reaches a certain temperature, without giving you any further indication that it is too hot. This is a common scenario if you've got a phone on the dash giving guidance, with the sun rays beating a back. And yes this does mean dedicated satnav devices have a greater operational temperature range than phones, usually a 15-20 degree difference (celcius).
4. If the CLA is being tripped out due to poor isolation (a lot of cars suffer from this) it will also stop charging.
5. In general terms, the lower the battery level of the device, the more juice it pulls. This is why you may find you ha email no problems getting a small charge when you start with a battery at 85%, but your phone dies if the battery is 50% or less.

Things I have tried so far:
1. Asked for a replacement from Brodit. Got it, no difference.
2. Tried with a different car (I have a BMW, my wife a brand new Toyota Auris) - doesn't charge it either.
3. Tried a different no-name universal charger - it works perfectly well, the phone is charging as expected. Other things like the GPS device also work fine.
4. Tried a different kernel and ROM on my phone, still no success.

Thats strange, in the first place i thought a faulty micro-usb or charger. But you got it replaced so can't be the problem.
I have a brodit with charger too, but i use it in a different way, meaning i can remove my holder and unplug it without unplugging my charger. ( near my holder i have a small connector that i can unplug).
What i did is cutting the cable from the charger and i did put a male usb port on it ( regular male usb port) and i have a Belkin charger with a usb port, this charger deliver 1A charging current and charge my phone even when i use my navigation. ( with bluetooth and gps on).
Your phones micro-usb seems to be fine too because it charge with other brands of chargers.
Your BMW delivers enough power i guess at your cigarette lighter plug, because it doesn't charge at the Toyota either and both not delivering enough power would be coincidence.
Anyway mine works perfect the way i did it and if i can remember it worked too with my original plug attached too. ( though the original one doesn't provide enough power sometimes to keep it charged while using navigation).
The only thing i can think of is that there is some stress-pressure on your connection between phone and holder connection and that one pin isn't connected properly, with the universal charger you only plug the micro-usb plug in your phone and the micro-usb plug can adjust freely to your phones micro-usb port.
Try to wiggle a bit with your phone when in the holder and see if the power comes on. Or try to connect a little device on your holders micro-usb port ( if you have something small that charge over micro-usb) and see if that works.
I was watching the Mavericks vs Thunder game using the watch ESPN app and my nexus battery was at about 93%
I watch since halftime to the end of the game and I was plugged in to a car charger the whole time and when the game ended about 1 1/2 hrs later the battery had dropped to 53%. Can't understand it. Hope someone here can explain this to me.
Phone is galaxy nexus, obviously, the battery is the 2100 OEM battery from Verizon store, charger is a belkin dual outlet 1amp micro car charger with the cable that came with a Droid charge.

5V right? that's not a huge draw at all on your battery, i'm assuming your car was either running or started right up afterwards...you can be certain your phone was getting that full 1A especially if your car was running. if your phone showed charging and your phone will normally charge from your car like that then you shouldve been in good shape. despite what you may think, i actually am trying to present relevant info lol but ummm other than that? i would definitely try a multimeter (.....if you have one.....) cuz that would show you exactly what you're getting in/out. usb pinouts should be somewhere on the internet. other than that, try doing the same thing (except for maybe a shorter time period if preferred) on a wall charger which should be more reliable and compare results. i've had devices that burn power faster than they receive them....but the good ole gnex? im not so sure. (engineer here).
I just recently join big red and coming from sprint with an evo 4g and didnt have this issue with that phone and same charger. I'm definitely going to try it with home charger to see if its the charger.
Extra info, the vehicle was powered on before I plugged in the charger, in case it matters any.

I find that under heavy usage, only the plug in wall charger gives enough juice to keep it increasing... and even that can go flat or decrease if you are really pushing it... also the way the battery stats are displayed can be flaky too... jumps in the level of charge and quick drops... hard to tell how accurate the reading is.
I hear you. That's crazy, basically the phone draws more power that the charger can provide. I would think the charger should be fine since its 1 amp just like the home charger.

Check in settings - status if it says charging (ac) or charging (usb) when plugged in you car.
If it says charging (usb) the charge amps are limited to 500mA.

The phone can use more power than a car charger can supply. This is commonly posted all over. Check your car charger, its likely a 0.5 amp. Buy a 1 amp or higher.

Your problem is the charger, 1 amp is the sum of the two outlets, hence you're only giving your phone 500mA max. When charging at that low of a rate, you'll drain the battery when doing anything power intensive on the phone. Your only remedies for this is to get a car charger that's capable of putting out 1 amp or more on a single line. What I personally did was get the Griffin Powerjolt dual charger for $8 on Amazon, opened it up, and soldered the center data pins on each port together.

I though that the griffin powerjolt dual outlet charger would dish out 1amp on a single port if the 2nd port was not being used. Interesting, I can see your point. Would you happen to have a picture of, or remember which are the two that need to be bridge inside to make it a full 1amp output?

Okay, I tried what you said and I got weird results. I used the awkward griffin powerjolt dual outlet car charger. I tried using two different cables, one was from my girl's Droid charge and when I plugged it in and check the status it said usb charging, then I plugged in a cable that came with a i go green adapter that I had purchased at an airport and the phone said ac charging. Unless the cable that came with the Droid charge can only pass 500mamp, I'm puzzle.
Both were plugged in at same time and also both cables were tried by themselves in each outlet of the griffin charger by themselves.
Interesting huh. I will keep testing and see what gives, last resort I get a more powerful car charger. Will keep you guys posted, thanks to everyone that contributed and pitch in thus far.

Got an update on this issue. I streamed another 45 mins to 1 hr of ESPN using watch ESPN app and the results are even more interesting. I was using the wall charger that came with the Droid charge and the USB cable that came with the I go green wall adapter that I have purchased at an airport a while back. Here is what happened, when I started streaming the battery was at 94% and I plugged in phone to charger and under settings/about/status it showed AC charging. After 45 mins to 1 hr of streaming the phone was extremely Hot towards the center of the back and below the cam lenses and led light. Also the battery had dropped to 93% and the phone status showed not charging, even though the battery icon on home screen next to clock shows the lightning symbol inside the battery like is charging.
I don't understand what is happening. Grrrrrr. This is using a wall a charger for a droid charge. Now of to trying it with the OEM charger and cable.

Exactly, in the driver i think the overheat is set to 140F. Also when your charger showed as usb it only gets 509mA and when showing ac it gets the full 1 amp. So just pay attention next time and see if it drains when showing ac.
My car charger is a 1.3 amp and always shows as ac and never drains while charging.

I though about that but then I was wondering, shouldn't the wall charger provide enough power to run everything in there while charging the battery or even without the battery in the phone. Like shouldn't the battery hold the charge that it already has when I started streaming as long as the charger is 1amp?
I would not care if when I stream the phone battery would just hold its charge at what it has at the moment even if it does not charge while streaming. Hopefully that is clear to understand.
To all the fellow galaxy nexus owners out there, maybe you all can test on your phones and see if you get same results as me. Download watch espn and stream the channel for 30 mins, notice what is your battery level before you start streaming, of course plug the phone to a car charger or wall charger and see if battery remains the same, drops charge, or gain charge at the end of 30 mins, or maybe an hour. I am not asking you to watch it for the 30 mins or 1 hour, just let it run and see what happen, if you can of course. only reason why I ask for watch espn is because it is the app that I have been using to stream nba games for the last few days.
Another thing since I am already here with this streaming issue, I have an original SlingBox, the cheapest of the cheapest when they first came out, just coax and that is it. I would like to know if I pay the $29.99 for the app from the market when i switch roms on my galaxy nexus would I lose the app? I have already unlocked and rooted my galaxy nexus and lets say I buy the app and I am running cm9 when I purchase it, if I change to gummy rom or back to a stock rom while still rooted would I have to re-buy the app ?

No I haven't try that. I am currently testing out roms like a mad man trying to find the best for my liking. Question for ya, As far as I know that is kernel dependent right? Like the kernel has to support it, if so which kernels do support it and what would be good underclocking settings ?
I get similar results while using navigation and pandora at the same time, the phone uses more juice than the car charger can provide.
Ironically I plugged in the oem charger and oem cable from the galaxy nexus box and open it (didn't really wanyed to do that) and streamed 30 mins of espn on watch espn and battery was at 70% when I started after 30 mins streaming it had actually climb to 78%. Confused yet everyone? What gives?

Not all that odd. Using my Fascinate charger (0.7 amp) I get noticeably slower charge times than the OEM charger (1 amp). I don't use my phone much while I'm charging so I can't provide any feedback for that.
What is the Droid Charge charger rated at?
For the past 2 years on my old Desire I was using a homebrew in car charger I put together myself that would happily provide 1A, but my new One X seems a little more power hungry than that and when in car mode it seems to discharge slowly even though it's still plugged in.
Can anybody recommend anything suited for the One X's huge power drain (homebrew or off the shelf, I don't mind) other than HTC's expensive official one? I was looking at the Belkin ones floating about but they still only provide 1A.

i bought the official ATT universal charger when i got my GS II in Oct and it should work with the One X. also, i think some car docks/mounts are active and have their own chargers, so you might not want both.
I'm using the official HTC Dual USB charger. Does the job nicely. and looks pretty good too. I just wish it was in white to match my One X

I have the same issue as OP. Changed my 800 mah for a 1A but battery is still draining =(
Same problem here... 2x1A HTC Charger... Is there anyboby who tried Belkin 2A mini charger?... I am bit scared, because in my battery monitor history Ive never seen more than + 600mAh... Even when off on home charger... It seems to me, that phone woudlnt allow quick charging... :-(

I had my phone connected to:
Car Bluetooth,
Google Maps on screen,
Screen On,
Poweramp Playing in background via speaker, and
Phone connected to the official HTC Dual USB Car Charger.
No power issues whatsoever. I had it connected and charging for about 10 minutes.
I kind of solved this problem by setting ballanced power consumption policy in my Sygic mobile navigation and lower brightness setting. But still I am unable tu charge my phone while using WAZE (navigation and lot of HSDPA data trafic)...but for now its ok..most important for me is charging during navigation by sygic....
In the end problem is still there and should be solved...I think that its really not ok to charge battery only by 600mA while other phones are able to take 1000mA usually delivered by all chargers..

it's not a problem of charging current, but of the phone battery overheating - it will just stop charging until it cools down (and if there's navi running it won't cool down, ever). I even tried a 2A charger - it will charge happily, but once I start Waze or Sygic it gets hot and starts to discharge again.
I think this is bad design because it should be able to run off the charger without battery in this case, but what it does is charge+discharge battery at the same time... either that or it just starts sipping from the charger when hot because it doesn't care if it's charging or just running from the charger....
Anyway, it has to be fixed.
same problem for me, but with some exception.
Im using Belkin mini car charger with 1A output. in car im turn on only GPS + 3g network. brightness set to 25%.
and with all of this settings battery slowly drain.
Also ive should say that battery not overheated through charging, but after 1% drained, phone says that "consumption is more that charger can give"...
Right now i think about other usb cable, not using original yet, may be inside it wire diameter too small to fit 1A.....
In fact i changed cable too... And it seems thats everything running ok even with waze on
And problem wasnt really overheating related since I have my car holder in front of air-condition grid... Its always under 30°C Best place for quadcore beast btw

So not perfectly OK... I was driving long way again yesterday... With Sygic on, and my battery stuck at 71% didnt go down on charger, but didnt rise too.. In fact I started my trip at 80% Well it did the job in fact, but after 3hrs of driving it should be full as any other smartphone... :-\

that's because it is using GPS (huge power hog), the screen is on (even bigger power hog) and then the CPU doing the calculations and rendering of the graphics, even with my desire hd it doesn't rise much when using sat nav. its a fact of life. the power consumed by the device is more than the charger can provide.
people have even reported that the mains charger isn't charging it quick enough whilst gaming for instance. (which doesn't surprise me)
Than it is fail of HTC... In fact my LGO2X (in most cases much worst than HTC) Handled it nicelly. HTC doesnt use potencial of charger. It takes only 600mA (top) while charger can deliver 1000mA.... And LG was able to use it....
I modified tiny generic usb car charger (5VDC 1A), so it allows faster charging. When opened up, D+ and D- pins were fed with some amount of electricity to allow iDevice charging, but I simply cut away traces leading to those pins and soldered them together. Phone reports "Charging (AC)". It really is standard method, but "surprisingly" Apple refused to follow standards and generic chargers do not work.

Check out Avantek on Amazon. 2 out of its 5 ports are providing 2.4A, enough to charge your One X at full speed. An awesome product at an awesome price.

I have read your post and i refer you to Amazon web services. You will definitely find there best charger for your devices which is compatible with your car.
I recently sold my old Toyota Rav4 which only had a standard cigarette lighter car charger. I used a cheap charger I've had since my old Blackberry Tour to charge my ET4G. I work on the road a lot and used the car charger a lot for about the last 10 months til my phone started dying on me. Sprint store tested the phone and said the battery was slightly swollen and definitely showed signs of being damaged which in turn damaged the terminals on the phone causing constant reboots. I paid $35 to have Sprint/Samsung replace the phone as it was less than a yr old and under warranty.
I now have a new car and new ET4G. New car has USB port under the radio as well as 2 standard car charging ports. I've done several searches and read several threads about different voltages and which ones actually charge phones and tablets etc but none have answered my question. The question is is USB charging any safer than standard car charger? I've been told by a friend that fluctuations in the cars battery can send different amounts of charge to the phone and damage it over time. Both methods charge my phone so I don't care which one I use though I'd rather use USB as my USB cord is just 1.5 feet long (perfect length to reach my phone mount).
For some reason they actually gave me a new ET4G not a refurb and it works great. I don't want to damage the battery on this one and would like to keep it alive and sell it when I upgrade phones around December. That's only a few months away but I'd like to know I'm not damaging the battery in the mean time. Any input would be great. Thanks in advance and sorry for the lengthy write up.

Don't know if the new car is also a Toyota but here goes...
04 and 10 Toyotas - tried a cheapo MicroUSB charger and the voltage actually drained the battery! So I bought a $10 lighter to USB port charger, plugged in the cable and charges like a champ!
It really depends on how much power they're pushing through the USB port and whether the E4GT can regulate it. I'm finding it to work great - and MTP mode should give you access to the music on the head unit. (Again, *if* it's a newer Toyota...)
Most radios and internal usb ports will be 500ma (same as a standard computer usb port). That is only enough to charge the phone when it is sleeping. Just snag a $10 adapter that puts out 1a.

Thank you both. I just drove 2 hours with Bluetooth on and GPS running while connected to USB. Battery drained 8% which isn't much so it wasn't strong enough to charge it but slowed down drain.
The new car is a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT (It's a new model to Hyundai). The cigarette charger doesn't seem to over heat the phone like my Toyota did. I'll ask Hyundai how much charge the cigarette lighter port puts out I guess.

I highly recommend the OEM Motorola car charger. Got mine on Amazon for $6. It was the only charger that would work on my old phone because it had voltage control. Any generic charger would only drain my battery while still displaying the charging animation.
Plus it has a cool blue glow to it.

Sweet, I'll take a look at it. I heard back from Hyundai and the guy said he has no documentation on it yet since its a new model but if I wanted to swing by he could test it real quick and let me know. Today was hot as hell. I got in the car and blasted the AC. Put the phone on the USB charger and after about 10 minutes I got a warning on my screen saying phone is too hot and charging has stopped. I didn't even have GPS on or anything. I quickly unplugged the phone and it was fine after that. How can the USB overheat the phone when it can't even charge it while I run GPS and Bluetooth? I wasn't too happy. I used a brand new USB to micro USB cord from Monoprice (5 pin if that makes a difference).

I have recently bought the Griffin Dual USB car charger.
I use quite often a GPS navigator when I am driving, so I wanted to buy a car charger which was powerful enough to sustain gps and 3g data plus a little extra juice to charge my phone battery. I found this charger on the internet and the specifications say it's got an output of 1A which should be more than enough for my needs. However, I was quite surprised when I realised that the battery still goes down really slowly when I use the gps app.
I've had a look online and apparently most car chargers are not recognised by your phone as a proper charger. For this reason, they provide only 500mA. You can double check this by having a look at 'settings > about device > Status > Battery status'. If it says 'Charging (USB)', it provides 500mA. Instead, if it says 'Charging (AC)', it provides more (so called fast charging). Well, my phone says Charging (AC). But it's still not enough apparently
Do you guys know any app or anything I can do to test how much the charger is actually providing?
As you can imagine, this is quite annoying.

i'm in the same boat as you but a different dual USB Charger
It's suppose to output 2.1A + 1A or something along those lines and it does charge last generation iPad and an iPad Mini at the same time without an issue.
When I plug a Galaxy Nexus in it charges as a USB BUT when I plug the Galaxy S3 it charges as AC but a 2 hour trip only got my phone battery up to 47% which is way way too slow and that is without GPS
The AC charger that came with my phone only outputs 1A but it charges my phone in 2.5 hours from dead flat to full
My car charger is the same. 2.1A port for tablets and stuff. 1A port for everything else. I have noticed that if I plug my s3 in the 2.1A port, it charges slightly faster. However, it's not even close to my 1A wall charger.

I recall back with my old phone (Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V), the lead devs teamed up and made a flashable patch that allowed you to toggle fast charging on and off, basically telling the phone whether it should consider the power source a USB or Wall charger and it worked good. Maybe we can get some people to team up and build that for the S3?
