Hi,
I have a strange problem here:
My Desire keeps bootlooping with every ROM I flash, even if I flash the ROM thats currently running stable on my device for weeks now.
Its a T-MOB (debranded) wit HBOOT 0.80.0000 and AMOLED display.
I'm not using A2SD ROMs.
I can only recover the phone if I use my last nandroid backup.
I tried factory-reset from phone - bootloop. Wiping from recovery - bootloop.
Tried flashing some ROMs (including exactly the one I currently run) - bootloop.
The loop starts on the 2nd bootscreen (the animated one).
Any ideas would be helpful. I thought about applying a RUU - but if that causes a bootloop afterwards... there would be no way to recover from that I fear.
as stated in many posts, this is a sdcard problem.
formatt your card to fat32 and flash the rom. don't forget to backup important data.
Regards
Marios
Thanks for your reply mariosraptor - I did read several posts explaining that bootlooping is a sdcard issue - I reformatted the card but still get bootloops.
So I tried some different stuff - and successfully flashed several 2.1 images without getting bootloops.
Flashing any 2.2 ROM afterwards got me bootloops again, so I'm still not sure if my loops are caused by the corrupt sd.
Now I took my goldcard and flashed the stock 1.21.405.2 image (lost root during the process but thats no issue).
Do you think its safe to apply the 2.09.405.8 OTA my phone is offering now?
If its really the other sd that was causing the issues it should be safe...
Will I still be able to flash back to an old version with the goldcard (via PB99IMG.zip)?
I know that the OTA comes with a new HBOOT but I still can root it with Unrevoked afterwards. But I'm not sure if I can recover the phone if its looping after the OTA
Solved: replaced sdcard, rooted with Unrevoked, flashed 2.2 ROM - no more bootloops
Old sdcard -> trash (have been using it for almost 2 years, still from my HTC Magic)
happy you solved your prob.

I just received my replacement Desire under insurance yesterday so started the process of making it "mine" properly...
The software version is 2.29.405.5 which I think is the latest. I was able to boot up to desktop and make calls with both Orange and Vodafone SIM cards so the phone is unlocked.
I did the following:
1 Downloaded the latest version of Unrevoked and rooted the phone with Clockworkmod Recovery version 2.5.0.7
2 Performed a nandroid backup (just in case ) using the new SD card that came with the phone.
3 Rebooted the phone.
After rebooting, the phone went into a closed loop around the HTC Quietly Brilliant logo and would not boot up properly. The only way out of the loop was to restore the backup I had just made.
I put my 16Gb card with an Ext3 partition on it, configured the phone, and tried to update it with a Modaco rom which includes A2SD+ (again after another nandroid backup).
Everything seemed to install properly, but again on bootup it went into a closed loop, this time around the Modaco logo. Again I was able to restore the backup I had just made!
I have absolutely no idea what the issue is and would appreciate any input.
Wipe all data and partitions?
I have done a factory reset - under clockwork recovery, which partitions to I need to format?
/system, /data, /cache and Dalvik cache. Just be warned that it will erase all data from your phone so please do a backup first. Then just flash the rom.
Success!
Many thanks for your help...
The only thing I forgot to back up was my SMS messages - oh well, no real loss
Has anyone had any problems with a Nandroid Backup?
I have tried twice and had same results - when running unrEVOked 3.21 on my desire, it roots - I go into Clockwork recovery and run a Nandroid Backup which completes successfully.
I then boot up my phone and it hangs on the HTC screen and/or boot loops to the HTC screen again.
I've not actually needed the backup yet as I've flashed custom roms that I'm happy with (like now) and set up as normal and/or ran RUU to go back to stock, which I did the first time it occurred...
Just thought it was an oddity that I'd mention in case I am doing something wrong.
Cheers
Nah, I am seeing this a lot. Quite common for some weird reason. Just ignore it really. When ever I get a hang or bootloop, I just flash the thing again.
That's fine then - just thought it was me - the first time I rooted and backed up it all worked fine - just since then..

Similar problem here. I had done S-off with Alpharev and found that i could not backup any ROM. i had to install new roms but could not backup any. if i did backup, the phone just freezes at backing up system and thsn nothing worked. pulled battery out and rebooted, my phone just freezes at splash image. finally, i tried flashing the recovery image from CWM ver 4.0.0.5 and all seems working fine now. you should give it a try.
so update CWM and it will work?
mine was s-on by the way.
cheers
Hello everyone,
first of all, im kind of new to rooting phones and stuff, what surely brought me to that problem i have.
I have an old HTC desire where i wanted to install a custom rom.
So i searched for a tutorial, i rooted the phone using unrevoked 3.21, worked fine. Then i wanted to install the custom rom, installed a backup tool first (something like "ClockwordMod Recovery") and made a backup on the sd card.
Then i wanted to install the custom ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403113
Worked mostly fine, but when i wanted to start my phone i got stuck in the startup screen forever.
I searched for this issue and found some tips about clearing caches and clearing the sdcard, what i did - so here is the problem. The sdcard wipe propably killed my backup file and now i am pretty screwed, i still get stuck in the loading screen of the ROM, so i dont have access of the phone, and backup tool has no file to recover from.
So what to do now? I want to reset the phone to the rooted status and try to install the ROM again, but as i said i cant access to anything. Any suggestions?
Thanks
EDIT:
Allright, i have no idea why, but suddenly the phone starts up with the new OS. So this thread can be closed / deleted. Sorry for that
Checked bortak's troubleshooting guide??

Sounds like you're sorted, can happen sometimes if it was your first CWM (nandroid) backup
HI,
I am sorry as this is commented on 100's of times & I have read & read but I just keep going round in circles.
A while ago I rooted my HTC One X (Can't remember exact method as some worked & some did not)
Did not change ROM so should be/is stock.
Endeavoru pvt ship s-on rl
HBoot 1.36.0000
... 16 Nov2012
I have 4.1.1 Vodafone VODAP001 uk
I would like to upgrade to 4.2.2
Preferably with root but I think now just get back to full stock & allow OTA & root again at a later date.
Ideally user Super SU etc to temp root & OTA.
CWM v5.8.4.0
OTA update fails Unknown Volume For Path ... - I expected this but have since tried with SuperSU & super user with temp unroot but still no luck.
Always full factory/dalvic wipe etc.
I even tried CM10.1 but seemed to install but got stuck once rebooted, Can't remember error but on intitial setup (Language choice behind error window) just allows Click OK constantly. I am surprised this has not worked as seems to have installed & boots OK. I would have thought if down to boot.img or other base issues would not have got this far. Auto installed from CWM & from zip on SD.
Few thing I perhaps don't understand
I am not sure I have stock copies of boot.img or the recovery as when installing ROOT to begin with these things have changed before any chance of a nandroid backup.
I assume all my problems are due to boot.img &/or recovery OR just relocking the bootloader or combination of all.
I am reluctant to use FASTBOOT & re-lock and maybe find I still can't upgrade and then find myself with a non-rooted phone which still won't OTA and perhaps harder to install a custom ROM (If all else failed)
The procedures to do some of these things are huge and so many comments afterwards of people having problems once they have done them.
With root but stock ROM what is the easiest way I might get to 4.2.2
Can I just get any'ish boot.img & recovery & try, do I need to lock the bootloader,
Could any of the temp root methods work.
Is there a risk that I would not be able to get back to my nandroid backups to recover if it goes wrong
(I know there is always a risk of bricking but is it quite likely here)
MaximusHD seems complicated also and with some issues, Android Revolution HD seems widely accepted but then not for use on any VODAP001 or any other tied phones, which must be a majority?
I have rooted & ROM's HTC desires & Desire HD and messed around a lot with these over teh years & never had any problems or lack of understanding (but that was a while back)
Thanks I/A
why not just flashing custom sense 5 rom like ViperX, Magiorom maximus etc?? it's much easier to go back to stock or so
Hi,
Thanks for your prompt reply
"it's much easier to go back to stock or so" did you mean it is much easier to go back to stock from a custom ROM or its much easier to install a custom ROM than go back to stock?
The problem/worry I have is Android RevolutionHD & MaximusHD (The 2 I did look at) both say NOT suitable for CID's other than HTC-
I have VODAP001 - Although looking now to list those not supported I can't find the page where is clearly said if they are not HTC-X don't bother trying to upgrade -This is weird & driving me nuts.
Not tried or looked a viperX or others.
I did try CM10.2 - I flash the boot.img that comes with CM for the One X and tried to install & tried to restart and it just freezes a few seconds into the boot. Recvoering my nandrdoi backup did not help, this time I thought I was really screwed.
Fortunately I have copied the nandroid backups to my HD and I managed to flash the old boot back (bloody lucky I copied to Hard disk as being a one X (No SD card) I am not sure I would be able to access the SD without it booting)
Anyway I think with a CID with Vodafone I do not think any of these ROM will work with there supplied boot.img unless I am missing something.
Is the boot.img linked to the Vodafone VODAP001 CID.
Rooting just does not seem worth the hastle anymore, use to love it but just seems too many variations on devices on boot.img, recovery & hboot and after all that so many people with issues, problems & failures.
I just want 4.2.2 now & think it ain't going to happen when those on stock have enjoyed simple OTA upgrades.
I meant that it's easier to install custom sense 5 Rom and stay with it because it has some mods and you don't have the f%cking bloatware inside...just flash in recovery a custom sense 5 Rom, and YES, it will work ...then flash from Rom.zip the boot.img in fastboot and you are fine...with stock you will get much more issues as with custom roms ...for example WiFi is then fixed in custom roms unlike in stock Rom

HI, Thanks again for fast reply,
Tried Android RevolutionHD
Downloaded recovery & boot .img & flashed.
Could not get as far as installing from ZIP, it seems to have wiped the SD Card (internal) so no access to the zip file
Now no access to my nandroid backup, says no files in any of the folders (only a few folders visible now)
reflashed but old boot & recovery but as internal memory seems screwed I am screwed.
The phone sort of starts but cleared of any of my apps or programs & I managed to copy from my hard disk, much to my surprise I could copy the nandroid backup to the sd card
BUT is is still not visible, rather stuck now, trying everything, why the majority of the contents of my internal memory should go is beyond me.
Had enough of this now.
You wiped all or? because if you just make factory reset in custom recovery like cwm or twrp it won't erase all things on phone...but I don't get now what you mean and want...if your Ron is booting all is fine or not ?

Are you have working rom or not? This is the main question?
I now have a working HOX with new 4.2.2 ROM, thanks to all concerned.
After dozens of variations of flashing boot & recovery & installing ROM's & recovering my backups I have a working copy of Android Revolution HD.
I really thought I was on the verge of bricking, would not get passed hboot/fastboot & thought I had lost my backups, especially as my internal memory got wiped, have no idea how that happened and I was very lucky that I have just copied the nandroid backup to my PC else I would have been really screwed, trying to find the correct ROM & boot.img to get me up & running would have been tricky.
I normally get these things sorted in the end but this was not easy.
Thanks again.
Hello,
sorry if this has been mentioned anywhere before, but I wasn't able to find something similar.
So I know why way around with my old Nexus 5 in things backing up the phone with Titanium or TWRP, but since it's wifi module died on me I switchted to the HTC 10, which is kinda intimidating to me when it comes to updating to new OS or backing up. With the NExus 5 it was a walk in the park for me.
First, I don't really understand the concept of S-On and S-Off. Don't know if this is related to my problem, just wanted to mention it.
My HTC 10 is rooted, bootloader unlocked, S-On and runs on 7.0 2.41.401.41.
TWRP is the latest available version.
Before I rooted the phone I made a backup of the stock system image etc like explained in one of those "how to root the htc 10" tutorials (no writing allowed).
To root I had to allow writing onto the system partition of course.
Now, I made an TWRP backup. I backed up everything that was available in TWRP. Userdata, cache, system etc.
Few weeks ago I ran into some problems (I though I did, turned out Google App is just weird) and wanted to restore my TWRP backup.
So I did. Went to TWRP and restored the backup from my SD card.
Got no error messages during the process, but when I wanted to boot up the phone the green HTC boot animation did its thing and then froze at the HTC logo, which would result in a bootloop after ~10 minutes of waiting.
Could force the phone to go into bootloader and from there into TWRP, but that's the best I could do.
Also removed SD and SIM card trays, but that didnt do anything.
Had to factory reset and then do a backup via Titanium backup, which is better than nothing but still a pain in the a** because some things just have to be set up manually, which took me quite a while. I honestly don't want do that again anytime soon
Does anyone have an idea what could went wrong or what I did wrong during the backing up and restoring process?
Except for that, I tried to understand how to update to an upcoming version of the OS when the phone is rooted with S-On and how I could keep my userdata? On the Nexus 5 I just manually installed everything via adb except userdata.img and only had to re-root the phone afterwards. I am afraid this isn't possible with the HTC 10, am I right?
The HTC 10 forces encryption and that has broken TWRP restore for me if I try to switch between ROMs. If I switch ROMs then I have to do a full wipe / format. The one time I tried to go back to my original OS I had a similar issue and I ended up flashing the full RUU to get back to stock.
The only time I am able to restore in TWRP is if I'm returning to the same ROM that I am currently running. Even then I usually just restore the data.
