I have available for download some nb0 files that work. Also, how to give your X50(mid) life again after you have bricked it (for example, you mistakenly flashed the WM5 A03 rom or any of the WM6 roms designed for the X50v).
Before you do anything, make sure you have at least a 256mb SD card and a card reader (you can get one at a place like Radio Shack or Office Depot). You also need to install winrar (found at WinRAR download and support. WinRAR is a powerful Windows tool to compress and decompress zip, rar and many other formats: Make Download). Your SD card must be formated with the FAT32 file system.
To format your SD Card with the FAT32 file system
Step 1: To do this insert the SD Card into the reader and go to "My Computer".
Step 1a: BACKUP YOUR FILES before you start
Step 2: Right-click the drive letter of the SD Card reader (differs for each computer, probably either E:\ or F:\ or G:\) and click "Format".
Step 2a: Don't worry about any of the options except for file system, choose "FAT 32"
Step 3: Click "Start" and wait until it is done
If you bricked your X50(mid) with a WM2003 SE rom trying to flash the A05 rom (latest rom for WM2003 SE)
Step 1: Get (OS) rom image at http://randomosity4.us/files/rfiles/...2k3_A05_EN.rar
Step 2: Extract files to any folder using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extrated the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Find the 2 files that have X50 in the filename (should be 1 (has a filename like DiMa_K_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 5: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the axim
Step 6: Hold the power button and the wireless button at the same time, and quickly tap the soft reset button (little hole on back of axim near DELL logo and press it with something like a pencil or pen) 2 or 3 times
Step 6a: Watch screen for SD Card loader (should see the hard reset screen, but wait a few seconds until it shows up)
Step 7: choose the A05 rom image and follow any on-screen directions
Step 8: watch your axim come back to life and enjoy your axim
If you bricked your X50(mid) with a WM2003 SE rom trying to upgrade to WM5 (VIA USB)
Step 1: If the bootloader didn't flash, you're screwed. I can't help you. I have not included the bootloader for certain reasons.
Step 1a:If the bootloader flashed successfully, download the OS file at http://www.drivehq.com/web/steven855/X50_WM5_A01.rar.
Step 2: Extract files to any folder using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extrated the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Find the 2 files that have X50 in the filename (should be 1 (has a filename like WM50_K_A01_X50_WM5_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 5: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the axim
Step 6: Hold the power button and the wireless button at the same time, and quickly tap the soft reset button (little hole on back of axim near DELL logo and press it with something like a pencil or pen) 2 or 3 times
Step 6a: Watch screen for SD Card loader (should see the hard reset screen, but wait a few seconds until it shows up)
Step 7: choose the A01 rom image and follow any on-screen directions
Step 8: watch your axim come back to life and enjoy your axim
If you bricked your X50(mid) with the WM5 A01 rom trying to update the rom to the WM5 A02 rom (or you bricked it trying to flash Maglite's WM5 A03 rom or any of his WM6 roms)
Step 1: A02 uses a different bootloader than A01, so that has to flash successfully before you can update to A02. I have included the bootloader just in case. If you don't need the bootloader, don't worry about it.
Step 1a:If the bootloader flashed successfully, download the OS file at http://www.drivehq.com/web/steven855/X50_WM5_A02.rar.
Step 2: Extract files to any folder using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extrated the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Find the 4 files that have X50 in the filename (should be 1 (has a filename like WM50_K_A02_X50_WM5_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 4a: Take the bootloader file and it's crc file (should be 1 (has a filename like WM50_B_A02_X50_WM5_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 5: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the axim
Step 6: Hold the power button and the wireless button at the same time, and quickly tap the soft reset button (little hole on back of axim near DELL logo and press it with something like a pencil or pen) 2 or 3 times
Step 6a: Watch screen for SD Card loader (should see the hard reset screen, but wait a few seconds until it shows up)
Step 7: choose the file "WM50_B_A02_X50_WM5_ENG.nb0" and follow any on-screen directions
Step 7a: repeat steps 6 and 6a
Step 7b: choose the file "WM50_K_A02_X50_WM5_ENG.nb0" and follow any on-screen directions
Step 8: watch your axim come back to life and enjoy your axim
If you bricked your X50(mid) with a WM5 rom trying to downgrade to WM2003 SE
Step 1: Your procedure is similiar to the updating 2003 SE rom one
Step 1a:Get os and bootloader rom image at http://randomosity4.us/files/rfiles/...2k3_A05_EN.rar
Step 2: Extract files to any folder using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extrated the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Find the 4 files that have X50 in the filename (should be 1 (has a filename like DiMa_K_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 4a: Take the bootloader file and it's crc file (should be 1 (has a filename like DiMa_B_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG) .nb0 file and (same naming conventions) 1 .crc file) and transfer them to the SD Card
Step 4b: Rename the bootloader file (on the SD card) from "DiMa_B_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0" to "WM50_K_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0"
Step 5: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the axim
Step 6: Hold the power button and the wireless button at the same time, and quickly tap the soft reset button (little hole on back of axim near DELL logo and press it with something like a pencil or pen) 2 or 3 times
Step 6a: Watch screen for SD Card loader (should see the hard reset screen, but wait a few seconds until it shows up)
Step 7: choose the file "WM50_B_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0" and follow any on-screen directions
Step 7a: repeat steps 6 and 6a
Step 7b: choose the file "DiMa_K_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0" and follow any on-screen directions
Step 8: watch your axim come back to life and enjoy your axim
Any questions, just post or PM me. I plan on having X50(low) rom images available soon (WM5 images at first and WM2003 SE images if I can find some, if you want to experiment and use the X50(mid) WM2003SE images in the meantime,I don't reccommend it unless you're desperate. If anyone wants me to have the X51 rom tutorial, let me know.

Hi! Steven ! would you mind giving me some SD images , i `m totally desperate !! i sent a private msg . thanks for replying !
i need WM2003SE and WM5 A01 for x50Low .
Thank you verymuch !
Thank you Hussein bey ,too !
Anyone can help with SD updating ?
Is it ok to flash X50 Low with X50 Mid `s ROM?
I used X50_K_WM50 A01 ROM to flash my 416cpu x50 low device then it did not boot ,black screen ,nothing happend, afterward , i flashed again with X50_K_WM50 A02 ,it did boot but stuck at 80%. I`m sooooooo bored of flashing my god damn PDA everyday ,and end up with failure ,and this is taking my whole lot of time ,totally breaking my mind .
I need to downgrade to 2003 ,so i thought i would need to upgade to wm5 a01 first ,then load 2003se image via SD ,but i totally screwed up .
Mr Erol told me that i needed to integrate bootloader, but i frankly ,don`t understand that . HOW TO I INTEGRATE BOOTLOADER ? sorry ,Hussein bey ,i`m not a CE geek, forgive me ,please!
Anyone can help ? Thank you !
Thanks,Everyone !for guiding me how to do it !
Thank you Hussein bey ! Thank you Steven! For giving us all those support and technical knowledge . YEAHHHHHHHH! I finally made it!!!!!!
I bricked my axim x50low when i attempted to update ROM to WM6 (i knew that wm6 needs 128 ROM ,however, i was damn curious, concequently gave my dear pda death penalty, I searched whole xda site and almost every corner of related sites, no answer ,,,, ,damn it , wasted my 2 weeks on searching internet ,asking people ,... fortunately, there tons of fragments of tricks and things i needed to know. Thanks you Hussein bey , you told me to integrate bootloader ,i didn`t get it at frist ,so, spent my time on blindly flashing my device every night ,ended up with endless failure.
My history of failure:
WM2003SE A05 -> USB -> wm5 A01 successful
wm5 A01->SD-> WM6 failure (it booted but stuck at 80%)
Tried to roll back to wm5 A02 via SD update -> stuck at 80% again
Tried to roll back to 2003SE (DiMA`s ROM) via SD ,but appeared "no suitable update" -> failure again
aftet some days ,found IMG2NB0F.exe ,but didn`t work ,produced 0mb image file .
Tonight , got some DELL`s official update`s pack ,found another one IMG2NB0F(2).exe at an Italian site ,it truly generated some 40mb of nb0 file ,and i generated CRC through CRC calculater, renamed nb0 and put em all in FAT32 SD card , flashed -> NO RESULT - Black screen , nothing, but SD update mode works ,self diagonis works .
Successful History of rescuing :
1. downgraded Bootloader from A02 to A01
2.put those DiMA`s A05_X50_WM2k3 images (4files including bootloader nb0 file,nb0 ROM image and correspondent SRC files) into the FAT32 formatted SD card
3. insert SD card into the AXIM ,press Power+wireless then tap softreset once while you`re still holding P and W button ,then SD image update appears
4.install DiMa_B_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0 ,untill it finishes and asks hardreset . repeat P+W+softreset to preform SD update again ,then install DiMa_K_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0
5. It really takes a long time ,about 30 minutes later , it says " image update successful ,plz hard reset ,then do it , --> Blue DELL logo appears , boots uppppppppp !
Thank you ! Hussein !for giving me the download link of 2003SE image and the bootloader trick . You have a pretty good turkish website ,i love it! I`ll visit often .
Thank you Steven! for teaching us all those things !
My bricked Axim X50 can't detect "WM50_B_A05_X50_WM2k3_ENG.nb0"

ROM Availability
Are any of these Axim x50, x50v, x51, x51v ROMs still available anywhere? Dell WM5 A02+, Lenny, Steven, or any of the ROMs mentioned in the Dell Forums of several years ago? All links mentioned in the forums are long since inactive.
I have an application that would really benefit from being able to use these devices with some older measuring equipment, and I have 2 dozen of the Axims and some HP HX4700s.
Any insight would really be appreciated. I know these units are well past prime, but could still be very useful to some of us if we could obtain better ROMs, particularly the Bluetooth stack versions.
Thanks!
Can someone who have the Upgrade CD, please upload it to somewhere else.
This device is anything but abandoned, i'm looking for the upgrade from 2003 to WM 5 and anywhere to find it, no one has the files or if they have, don't wamt to share...
I'm so sad right now...
hi all, i am a beginner with windows mobile and i am currently using a Asus P535 windows mobile 6 OS. I bought the set in Hong Kong but unfortunately i forgot that the language cannot be changed back to English. Now i am having a lot of problems with the chinese interface.

ROM version V4.7.12 CHT_HK00
Boot version 070416122657
Radio version V.4.7.0
MP version V0.164
Battery version 1.3
Ext ROM version V1.4.3 HK00
as i am a noob i hope u guys can input me with layman's term not pda terms..besides, i only have a USB cable to do it, no other sophisticated gadgets : ( thanks a thousand...
Try this.
Put it in your MiniSD card and execute it.
If it work, flash WWE version then.
vivi
PS. Not my work.I don't know who create this.
i must use an empty mini sd right ?
how do i flash WWE ?sorry i am not experienced in this field and even shops in my town do not provide such a service. I called Asus Malaysia, they are not helpful at all. I even asked if i could go to their service centre and pay for the service, they said no.
what is the worse that could happen if something goes wrong ?
i have run it in my asus p535 ...
it says ROM language ID: 404 (i think it is 404 too fast u couldn't see), now unlocking....
after that noting came out...
i try executing it again ....now it says my ROM language ID:0 , but my ROM is still HK00 , changing it to WWE MY00 is difficult, different region, different language.
does this mean it worked ? how do i continue ? thanks so much

Do you have a *.cap file (official Firmware)? If so, do the following
Download this.
Run "P535RomTool.exe -d6 AsusP535.cap" on command line.
Note 1: AsusP535.cap has to be in the same dir as P535RomTool.exe.
Note 2: If your file has another name, take the right one!
Copy the resulting GalaxyII.nb0 file to a clean SD Card.
Run ASUS.UnlockLangId.exe on your p535.
Perform power+photo+record+reset
Enjoy!

Ok,i bought an asus P535 from eBay for a very good price BUT there is a problem.
The language of widows is French.
I can work my way through the menus and use the phone but it is getting frustrating.
Is there a way to change the language into English?
PS.Please respond only if you know a way to do this,i can speculate for myself.

Welcome
If Start-settings-system-regional settings does not work try to reflash to another ROM in WWE
Good luck,
Success!!!
Ok,this is to anyone facing a similar problem:
USE THIS ONLY IF YOU ARE WELL EXPERIENCED WITH BIOS/FIRMWARE FLASHING AND ALWAYS AT YOUR OWN RISK.IF YOU DO SOMETHING WRONG AT THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE YOU WILL MOST LIKELY RENDER YOUR PHONE USELESS.
Step 1:
go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=295778&highlight=p535+language&page=3
and download the p535 ROM tools
Step 2:
go to www.asus.com -> downloads, select the device and select window mobile as OS.
Then select the ROM with the language you wont to install.(in my case the V4315_WWE_MS00.rar Malaysian-only version with English language)
Step 3:
Extract both the zip files from the ASUS official ROM and the P535 ROM tools.
Step 4:
In the folder of the ASUS ROM there is a folder named "2577".Inside there is the file Autorun.exe
Replace that file with the Autorun.exe from the P535 ROM tools, and also add the "ASUS.UnlockLangID.exe" from the P535 ROM tools into the 2577 folder.
Step 5:
In the folder of the ASUS ROM there is also a file named "GALAXY.cap"
Make a copy of that file in the same location but ame it "GalaxyII.cap"
PS.In my case i also had to add in here the file "AsusP535.cap",which i found it in the UK-only version of ROM available for download from asus.
Step 6:
Format a 2GB mini-SD card with FAT-32 system and copy into it ALL the stuff in the ASUS ROM folder(1-the folder named"2577" with the Autorun and ASUS.UnlockLangID in it and 2-the files "GALAXY.cap","GalaxyII.cap") (and "AsusP535.cap",in case the phone shows an error"AsusP535.cap missing" BEFORE it starts the ROM upgrade process)
Step 7:
Insert the mini-sd card into the top-slot of the P535 and when the phone displays a message about running Autorun.exe select >NO<
Step 8:
Using the phone's file explorer go in the mem.card and run FIRST "ASUS.UnlockLangID.exe" and THEN "Autorun.exe".
The phone will request you to connect it to a power source and after you do that it will ask you if you want to upgrade the ROM.
Select YES ad everything is done automatically. The Phone will download the new ROM from the mem.card and install it.
PS.
I have destroyed 2 mp3 players in failed firmware flashing attempts,so my lesson learned is this:
DON'T,NO MATTER WHAT disconnect,remove battery,reset,shut down
the phone during the upgrade process,or you will kill your phone.
Hi everyone. Sorry that I haven't posted a rom in a while, but school and my new job with Microsoft as a Microsoft Student Insider have been sucking my time. I have been doing some research on the future of WM6.5 on the A6x6 and I would like to report my findings. As of now for the old WM6.5 interface, due to Microsoft not releasing any real new builds, I will only be able to make one more rom with an os update that uses the old WM6.5 interface. For the newer WM6.5 interface, I will be able to provide roms for a while that use this newer interface. If you like the older WM6.5 interface (like I do), I am sorry; there is nothing I can do about future builds other than what Microsoft makes. For Windows Mobile 7/Phone 7, there is NO chance of it running on the A6x6 AT ALL due to tougher hardware requirements.
I am booked with midterms this week, but updated international roms are going to be uploaded while I'm on spring break (next week). It's taken me a while to find all the language files I need.
Thanks to Makuu (for helping to get me started), Lenny, AstainHellbring (thank you for all the nightly help sessions), the creators of the tools I used to make this rom, and anyone else that I failed to mention in name who gave me the knowledge to complete this rom.
Asus Mypal A6x6 WM6.5 version 7
Windows CE version 5.2.21916 (Build 21916.5.0.95)
This was tested on an Asus Mypal A626 (and works). It should work with the A686/A696, but the other models were not tested. Any other models NOT mentioned above WILL NOT WORK.
For everyone asking if this works on the A636 (or A636n), THIS WILL NOT WORK.
Updates
1. os build
2. bug fixes
Additions (since last release)
1. Registry Editor
Removals (since last release)
1. none
download: http://www.easy-share.com/1914041987/Asus_A6x6_WM65_7.rar
At this time, this will be the only download link. Mirrors will be created in the future (after I give permission).
Instructions (I have included a txt file with same instructions for offline convenience)
Before you do anything, make sure you have at least a 256mb SD card and a card reader (you can get one at a place like Radio Shack or Office Depot). You also need to install winrar (found at http://www.win-rar.com/download.html). Your SD card must be formatted with the FAT16 file system.
To format your SD Card with the FAT16 file system
Step 1: To do this insert the SD Card into the reader and go to "My Computer".
Step 1a: BACKUP YOUR FILES before you start!!
Step 2: Right-click the drive letter of the SD Card reader (differs for each computer, probably either E:\ or F:\ or G:\) and click "Format".
Step 2a: Don't worry about any of the options except for file system, choose "FAT"
Step 3: Click "Start" and wait until it is done
Step 1: Get (OS) rom image
Step 2: Extract files to any folder on hard drive using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extracted the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Make sure that the filename is "CANNES_A_WM6.img"
Step 4a: if the img file it's not exactly "CANNES_A_WM6.img", rename it to that
Step 5: Format the SD card if you haven't already done so using the instructions above
Step 6: Copy the img file to the SD card, see step 6a
Step 6a: Make sure that the img file is the ONLY file on the SD card after formatting
Step 7: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the a6x6
Step 8: Make sure that the a6x6 is plugged in via ac adapter before doing the next few steps
Step 9: activate SD Loader using the following instructions {
Step 9a: Hold down the power button and enter button (that's the button in the center of the d-pad)
Step 9b: Double tap the soft reset button while holding the other 2 buttons
Step 9c: After double tapping the soft reset button, keep the other 2 buttons held until a blue screen comes up that says something like Asus Cannes flashing utility
Step 9d: Wait until the process is finished (it's near the end when it says "writing private")
}
Step 10: At this point, your a6x6 should reboot on its own
Step 11: enjoy your updated rom
If you have any questions, feel free to just post or PM me.
As I release new roms, if you have a support question, please give me the rom version so I know what rom you are working with. You can get the rom version from the filename of the rom pack.
Example: Asus_A626_WM614_1
A626 = device (most often it will be A626, will rarely be different), WM614 = os version, 1 = release #

Hey Steven, it has been a while since I have checked your release updates. Once again, a big THANKS for your hard work! Will test this rom soon and report bugs if I find any. Congrats on your new job and good luck on your exams!
Thanks again!

There is any chance to run android on A696 ??
Everything is working for now, but I've noticed one bug. When battery is discharging, then after turning on again, clock in top tray disapears - you need to turn it on again.
Asus_A696_WM65_7
I don't think I've seen that one in a while. I will check into it.
Can't find how to...
on the Today screen, I can't seem to edit the "Favorites"
I would go to the 'Change Favorites' screen, but no option to add or remove.
anybody have a clue?
Thank you for this great ROM, works well and speedy on the a626.
can you make for the A636N? please
Hi Steven,
Could you please upload this ROM once again... the link is dead
Many thanks in advance!
Kaj
Hi, seems that's your last release for this device, can you upload again this build? Cause the link seems to be dead. Actualy i'm testing your version 6, that's great.
Thank you.
Hi
I'm joining the other requests here...pls pls pls upload again this version you did.
I only now saw that someone worked on new releases for asus a6x6 devices... thanks a lot !!
Can you please reupload? The problem with discouraging people mirroring links is links go down and no one archives it. So many rapidshare links on XDA are dead because people don't like others hosting.
I was searching on this site for a way to dualboot and found nothing. I know many of you are looking for a way to dualboot these two awesome OS(es?). Well look no further. I found a way to successfully dualboot on a website but it's directions are partially inaccurate and incomplete so I decided to write my own method based off of that website. (I will also provide a link to that site at the bottom of this post)
If ^that^ was too much for you too read, here's the condensed version:
I found the method online
I'm simplifying it
So here it is:
Step 1: Download Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant
Click Here: http://web.esd.microsoft.com/W8DL/W...C5B1D8956B5B1D8/Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe
Step 2: Open the downloaded file (if you think I'm going to slow, skip down to Step )
Step 3: Click Run, and if you're not an administrator, type in the admin password, then Click "Yes" when you get a popup saying the Microsoft want access to your hard drive
Step 4: It'll check your "apps"(programs) and devices for compatibility(It might take up to 15 mins. depending on how many "apps" you have. This step doesn't really matter(or apply) to us.
Step 5: Do something/anything
Step 6: Click Next. Select "Nothing"
Step 7: Click Order and fill out your information. Click Checkout.
Step 7.5: Write down your product key on physical paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Very Important)
Step 8: It'll now say: "We're getting a few things ready"
Step 9: Fill out the details it asks for, then click Next
Step 10: On the next screen choose your payment method
Step 11: Fill out that information, then click Next
Step 12: You'll arrive at the "Confirm your Order" screen. At the bottom click "Buy"
Step 13: Now it will say "Processing your order". Then it will download Windows 8 for you(This might take a while, it depends on your internet connection speed), then make the files it downloaded ready to upgrade your computer.
Step 14: There will now be three options under the title "Install Windows"
Step 15: Select "Install by Creating Media"
Step 16: Now you can either select Usb Flash Drive or ISO file
This is where it branches off
If you select ISO Image, it will ask you where you would like for this to be saved. Then it will prepare the image and be done in maybe 3 mins or so
If you selected USB Flash Drive then I'm sorry I have no idea what to do. If someone could help, I'll include them in the credits
Step 17: (for ISO)
Click the ISO you downloaded and insert a DVD(one of those 4.7 gb ones) into your drive
Step 18: Click Verify Disc to be careful or, if you prefer speed, directly Click "Burn"
Step 19: If you are doing this on a laptop it might sound like your laptop is going to explode, but it's not. I'll take around 15 mins. It'll eject your DVD after it's done
Step 20: Press "Start" button and type "diskmgmt.msc" and click the first option that comes up
Step 21: It might take a while to fully load up. Right click your main(and/or biggest) hard drive and select the fourth option, "Shrink Volume".(It'll take while to load).
If you are on a 32 bit computer enter at least 16384.
If you are using a 64 bit computer type at least 20480. Press "Shrink"
Step 22: Right click the created hard disk and click "New Simple Volume"
Step 23: Click Next, Next, then assign a drive letter then Next, Select "Format this volume with the following settings" then assign a name. For file system select "NTFS", then check "Perform a quick format". Then click next, then Finsh
Step 24: Shutdown your computer (Advanced users can sip down to Step 27)
Step 25: Go into BIOS. I cannot help you with this as every computer is different
Step 26: Once in BIOS, change the boot order. Save and Exit.
Step 27: Shutdown your computer
Step 28: Insert the DVD.
Step 29: You will get a message: "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" Press any key..
Step 30: It will install then you will get to the Personalization Screen (colors, Accounts, etc.)
Step 31: You are done Enjoy!

You left out the part where you have to partition your disk. Otherwise it will simply overwrite your existing Windows installation.
You wrote you were going to dualboot, right?

Wait, it was that hard to find the steps of
1. Download or pick up a copy of Win8 and put your license key somewhere you can get at it.
2. Reboot your computer from install media.
3. Re-partition your disk.
4. Install to the new partition.
???
Dual-booting Win8 with another OS is no different than it has been with previous OSes. In fact, so long as you stick to NT 6.x versions of Windows, it's pretty trivial. As for re-partitioning, you can do that before rebooting, as you listed, or you can do it from the OS install environment. That option is actually faster, and might allow a greater amount of shrink, because there's no concern over whether file handles are in use. You'll need to select the Advanced options, though.
As for creating a bootable flashdrive, there's a tool somewhere to do it for you but the steps are actually quite simple.
1. Make sure it's formatted FAT32. Reformat it if needed.
2. You'll need to mark the Flashdrive's partition as bootable.
2.1. Open CMD as admin.
2.2 Run diskpart.
2.3 List Disk to find he disk number of your flashdrive.
2.4 Select Disk # (where # is the number you found in 2.3).
2.4 List Part to find the partitions on the flashdrive (there's usually only one).
2.5 Select Part # (where again, # is the partition number from 2.4).
2.6 Active (this command marks the selected partition as "active" meaning bootable).
2.7 Exit.
3. Copy the install files onto the flashdrive.
3.1. If you downloaded the install media as an ISO, you'kl need to get the files off of it. You can do this by mounting the ISO, by opening ISO in a program like 7-Zip (my preferred option), or by burning it to a DVD.
3.2 Once you have the files, just copy them from the root of the install "disk" (whether a physical DVD, mounted ISO image, or image you are exploring in 7-Zip) to the root of the flashdrive.
4. You now have a bootable flashdrive ready to install Windows from. You can use it on any computer that can boot from USB.
A few more tips:
* If you have Bitlocker enabled on your current OS, suspend or disable it before running the second install! Otherwise, you'll have to enter that horribly long Recovery Key value. The best way is to suspend BL, which is nearly instant to do or undo, and very easy:
** CMD (or Powershell) as Admin -> manage-bde.exe -protectors -disable C:
* If you have a Linux dual-boot already, and have configured GRUB to chain-load the Windows loader (which is the usual approach), you will need to re-install GRUB after installing Win8 because Win8 will overwrite the GRUB stage one loader in the MBR. If you instead have the Windows loader set up to chain-load GRUB, you're fine; installing win8 will add a new entry to your BCD (bootloader menu) but won't interfere with the existing one for loading GRUB.

Probably, yes. It could just as easily be done with a script that invokes Diskpart and 7-Zip, though.
Thanks though this way seems easier
