Desire Newbie - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought desire and it came rooted with LeeDroid v1.9 .. meaning it already had the 2.2 update installed.
My problem? I want to reflash it to stock rom, the 2.1 eclair. How should i go about without demaging my phone? Dont ask me why I want to do that.
PS: This is my first android phone. Any help and pointers in this regard would be appreciated.

Do you know whether it was a branded phone before being rooted/flashed?
You don't want to go to 2.1, get the stock 2.2 and flash that

i dont know if it was branded or not. where to get the stock 2.2 ? and how to flash?
i am an android newbie, so all this flashing and rooting is french too me
sorry for being naive.

In terms of getting the ROM, click on the version number on my signature (if it asks for a username/password both are shipped - there's also the chance the link is down. If it is, try again later). That is the full ROM.
To flash the ROM, connect your Desire to your PC and make sure you're connected in HTC Sync. Then just run the RUU file! If your phone was previously branded the CID check wil fail and the update won't complete. No biggie, it just means you have to make a gold card to flash it - search 'make gold card desire' on here and you should find a decent guide (I'd say use THIS one)
If it does complete, then you have a genuine unbranded Desire and you can enjoy the 2.2 goodness!!

thanks .. will report back if the need may arise

tnx ... everything worked like a charm

No gold card needed? Nice!
Enjoy your phone

naaa .. no gold card needed .
saved me a lot of trouble.

Vodafone 2.2 update advice

Hi all
I have rooted my phone to put a custom rom on using the 1 click method.
I have just put the stock vodafone 1.19 rom back in in prep for hopefully getting the 2.2 update. However i am thinking vodafone will take there usual slow assed time in getting it to us so i would want to put the WWE version on my unbranded Vodafone handset.
Now what i am wondering is how can i install a WWE version when the last time i tried i got a "this is not the correct update for your phone" or similar msg in the install.
is it something to do with this goldcard thing i have seen about here?
thanks all
Also tryed your method and got the same error. Can't seem to find anything on it so for the moment ill stick to 2.1 then update when a modded rom comes out.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Your phone could need unlocking. However first try a goldcard to flash from vodaphone Rom to stock.
Bring on 2.2

lennshow66 is right, You need a "gold card" to flash a stock rom, Rooted or not!
Edit: Good guide HERE if you don't know how!
this is interesting...

actually unrevoked method roots without the need of a goldcard.
Yes but to flash a HTC RUU rom you need a goldcard in your phone because the ruu rom uses it's own bootloader/recovery, If you don't have a goldcard in your phone an official rom will always throw up a ID Error!
Edit: On branded phones!
thanks all thats exactly what i needed to know
Thanks all guys its worked well, goldcard created via the excellent guide and then i installed the stock WWE install. so hopefully as my phone is a vodafone that was auto unlocked and now i have a goldcard i might get the update this weekend

HTC Desire Debrand

Hey Guys,
im getting a Desire through Telstra tonight, and the first thing i want to do is debrand the thing.
I have read up on some things but still a little confused, can someone point me in the right direction, of 1 how to unlock the phone, root it and the best ROM to install on it.
Much Appreciated
Ok i think i know what im doing now.
One thing though, i just want a normal rom to put on it, just debranded, can anyone recommend me something?
I dont really want custom roms etc
Look in the sticky in rom section, shows the stock roms available. Then you can upgrade to stock 2.2
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok so if i use this rom
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Which are not rooted do i still need to root the device etc or can i just use this rom and it will update and remove the telstra stuff?
And is this the latest normal 2.2 Rom?
You need to root to debrand, then put the stock Rom on
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok no worries ill do that, but is the rom i posted the correct Stock 2.2 Rom i would use in AUS? for the Desire?
Just remember having a goldcard always inserted, while debranding and OTA updating.
I was gunna do this method, no goldcard needed.

But do i only have to have the goldcard inserted while updating and rooting, then i can remove it?

HI there,
I used the unrevoked method and this provides "root" and ClockworkMod Recovery. I then initially downloaded [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team) link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
The above rom is very much like the standard HTC sense ROM but without the Tel$tra bloatware. Have a good search on xda though as there have been a number of roms (sense like) been released since this one.
I have since moved on to [ROM-FROYO AOSP] OpenDesire v3.6.1 (720P | 2.6.34.5 SVS KERNEL | 1305mhz) (26/08). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712615
This rom is a "vanilla" (plain) version of the android OS and is half the size of the sense ROM, and is clean and fast, but you lose the "sense" interface and the HTC FM radio.
Everything else camera, wi-fi, GPS, phone, etc works perfectly from me.
BTW, all this is on a Tel$ta Desire (A8183) that is 3 months old. I have had no probs at all.
Hope this helps
Thats awesome info great so ill use the guide i posted to Root the device then i can install any ROM i wont, i think ill use the original 2.2 Rom that i posted earlier in the thread
to confirm even if i want to use a stock HTC RUU rom from the Stock Rom page i still have to Root my device?

It would be pointless rooting before applying an RUU, as it's not necessary and the flash process will remove root anyway.
That RUU you pointed to will break a Desire with an SLCD screen, so be warned.
Ok so i should just use a hacked rom thats based on the normal one, how do i find out if the phone i have is SLCD?
You can still use an official ROM. Read this for lots of info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749551
WOW now im even more confused i used to be able to hack my old HTC Touch Pro easily lol.
Ok so i have to hope my Telstra delivered phone is still AMOLED, then i wont have any dramas, to be honest im not much into running a custom rom, id rather just get rid of the telstra crap thats going to be on the phone, but i also do not want to brick it or break the screen in the process.
So if i just use one of the RUU updates in your post you linked me too it doesnt matter if its AMOLED or SLCD i can update to it without rooting?
Ill get the phone first work out if i have SLCD or not, then go from there.
I wont Froyo on my phone and no telstra stuff so i can make a goldcard and update, or if i have a AMOLED phone use the Rooting tool and update to any rooted ROM correct?
You can debrand on any type of screen using the correct RUU. You can root both types too.
If you root you cannot run an official ROM, but you can run something almost exactly the same.
Which Froyo Rom (rooted) would be the closest to stock?
To Confirm if i have an AMOLED phone i can just update a Stock Non Branded ROM without rooting? By placing the update.zip on the phone and updating using recovery mode?

hi widge
just go with the flow, unbrand it, root it and play with all the roms, your gonna love it. try em all and see what u like best. I am on nextsense rom 7 at the mo and waiting for the kitchen to open again so i can do some cooking. Tried opendesire a while back and it was pretty mint, may take a lokk at it again myself.
You can't switch to an unbranded rom by using update.zip files, you use an RUU to flash the phone, which requires a goldcard.
To install custom roms you root and install them as zip files in recovery.
You can do both on an SLCD or AMOLED screen, but with an SLCD screen you have to be more careful which RUU you use.

[Q] CM6 to HTC sense 2.1

I recently rooted using unrevoked on a mac, and am now running CM6, id like to go to back to my original software which was 2.1 with Sense on Telus. Is this possible, I dont mind if i lose all my contacts and apps etc. I'd just really like to go back to the software so i can rest easy. If so, can someone provide detailed step by step instructions for this as im a big noob. Thanks in Advance.

Dont suppose you performed a Nandroid backup that you can use to restore the original rom image using some recovery?
If not, check this thread:

See post #19 (another member packed a nandroid backup of the stock Telus rom) especially and posts on the next few pages of this thread for a link to the original Telus stock radio image for 2.1.

There are a few nandroid backups of telus floating around but they do not include the radio. The current 2.2 radio's floating around do not work with 2.1 but should be able to find something that does work.
When you find a backup of the original telus rom you will need to copy it to your sd card to the location where they are stored... off hand I belive it is..
clockworkmod/backup/ date and time stamp of the backup
When you get the file there you boot into recovery, move down to android and select restore and pick the date of the one you want to restore.
Honestly if you want a sence UI there are many 2.2 htc sence roms on here which are much better then 2.1.
Are you only missing the sence widgets etc? Or do you need it back to original to return it etc?
Thanks i found a nandroid back up on another thread, as well as a radio. If you could find me a 2.2 sense rom, and radio, and tell me exactly how to install from a mac that would be great, cuz im super afraid of bricking my phone, and i dont really need CM6. THanks in advance

Depending on the look and feel and how customized you want there are a few options. Listed in no particular order. I have never tried the Stock rooted one though.
Highly Customized:

If you are running cm6 you are already rooted with recovery. All that is required to install any of those roms is to download them to your sd card, reboot into recovery, run a wipe system then install zip from sd card, boot and your good to go.
Note: Some of them may require a ext partition on the sd card which I would assume you don't have since cm6 does not need/use it nor did the 2.1 that came with it.
MacLite and the Official 2.2 rooted would not need any changes, just the download.
You should not need a goldcard for anything.
How do i install new radio??????
If you are running CM6 it already uses a froyo radio, you don't need to change it unless you are having issues etc. You do it the same way, download it to the sd card, boot into recovery and say install zip from sd card etc. Same way you would a rom.
Also, when i reboot how long do i wait at the android with the box, before yanking battery

so your saying when the android bot with the box comes up just wait it out, and it should reboot into 2.2 sense?

HTC Desire 2.1 T-Mobile - Flash Android 2.2 without T-Mobile?

Hi guys.
I am about to buy a HTC Desire tomorrow.
It is SOFTWARE-Branded to T-Mobile and has Android 2.1
But i dont want a T-Mobile Software-Branding and i want Android 2.2 (and 2.2 with all features ...) so i would like to flash to a Android 2.2 ROM where i dont have any branding and all features (Tethering ...)
So i guess i am searching for a way to make my Android 2.1 T-Mobile to a "rooted" Android 2.2 without branding and with all features.
How do i do this guys?
Im new to Flashing and ROMs and i never used Android before.
I hope u can help me until tomorrow
Greetings

1) no you wont if you mean sense ui.. that just depends if you want a custom ROM.. just read to see if its a sense ui, or a non- sense ui ROM..
2) no need! just run a correct RUU file to unroot and get your warrenty back! and before rooting you will probobly do a nandroid back up, so all's good
OK THX guys!
Another important question:
What is a good Android 2.2 ROM?
I first root my Android 2.1 T-Mobile by using unrevoked3 for excample.
Then i Flash Android 2.2 Froyo Stock - and then i root it again?
Is that right? But which ROM do i take if i want Android 2.2 with all Features?
I dont want a special ROM, just Android 2.2, Radio, and able to install my own Apps
Can i use this one?

Do what I did. Buy phone via contractor like mobile phones direct. I've ordered 600 min 500 txt and free internet but they gave me 900/500 and 1 gb of net that was capped. After I've received the phone I've emailed tmobile and said that mpd miss leaded me and I only have 1gb net of capped hsdpa but in t&c it says that it should be 3gb and complained about the speed. Next day they rang me and unlocked everything . And more importantly desire is unbranded so I had froyo update when it arrived.... Hope this helps.. Still have warranty and at the moment font need rooting

Correct me if I'm wrong, but unlocking a phone still doesn't make it unbranded, as it has the customized software. However, this could trigger the update notification, which then would start the update process for FW2.2.

Can i also use "unrevoked3" to root my branded Desire and then flash a custom / original ROM?
unrevoked3 seems so much easyer to me
Quote:
Does unrevoked3 give me root?
Yes. It previously did not; as of version 3.0, it does.
What does this do, then?
unrevoked3 will replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.

Am i about to kill my HD?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?

Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

Ok, so where would i find this 1.32 rom?
Also, when i have this HTC rom loaded on, will i still receive any OTA updates? And would they be HTC branded one's from that point on?

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
