Lost Phone...Preventing data loss in the future - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I lost my phone on labor day....it's terrible, i feel naked without this thing. Not so much the phone, I'm more distraught over the SD card that was in my phone, and I didn't have a recent backup of it.
So I'm devistated that I've lost so many pictures from my 30th bday celebration at Myrtle, countless videos and just everything that was on my SD card. That's the most important part of the phone.
Anyway, to the point. Is there an app or a process that anyone goes through to ensure if their phone is lost that they have a relatively recent backup of their SD card? I've lost my phone before, but I got it back, someone went out of their way to contact sprint to get a hold of me to return it. So I backed up my SD card as soon as I got that one back, but I guess I felt that I would never loose another phone. Word of advice, don't get drunk on labor day and let your friend use your phone then put it in her purse, it's easy to loose track of!
Thanks for any help.

If you are rooted, periodically do a nandroid backup of your phone and store the backup file on your PC.
If you are not rooted, backup everything with MyBackup Pro and store the backup files on your PC.
When you get the new phone, simply do a restore from backup.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

You could use various backup software when you have your SD mounted as a drive on your PC.
I went the cheap and easy route with 2 batch files on my Windows PC.
SD_Backup.bat
rem The BACKUP operation is about to start
pause
xcopy l:\*.* C:\Evo_Backup /r /i /c /h /k /e /y /d
Click to collapse
SD_Restore.bat
rem **WARNING** The RESTORE operation is about to start
pause
xcopy C:\Evo_Backup\*.* L: /r /i /c /h /k /e /y /d
Click to collapse
"L" is the drive letter my PC assigned my Evo when mounted in USB drive mode. "C:\Evo_Backup" is the directory I store my files.
The backup will only backup files that don't exist on your PC or are newer which makes backups much faster after running the first full backup. The restore does the same, but in reverse.

stroths...this is an excellent idea, I never though of doing it this way. I have a few batch scripts that I use with robocopy. I will definitely be using this script. Thanks for the tip.

Can anyone HELP ???.........

Before swapping my XDAIIi with my new EXEC I made a back-up on my SD CARD. BUT THE EXEC CANOT RESTORE FROM THIS LOCATION!!!..... Is there anyway of recovering my data????? thank you anyone out there with more knowledge and expertise who could help.........
Find another device running the same ROM version as your old device and restore your data to that device. The extraxt what you need and active sync. The transfer all data to the new device.
Thanks.....It was exactly what I thought. But I have tried this on 4 different machines.....and they all crashed or froze and it just didnt happen........
Is there any other possible way!? :?
When you say you made a backup on your SD card, I'm guessing you mean a backup of the entire XDAIIi system (including all your files, all program files and all ROM files).
If so, you can't restore a backup from an XDAIIi onto an XDA Exec. They're two completely different machines and the backup will be incompatible.
Like badgerboybadger says, you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work. If you want to transfer installed programs from the IIi to the Exec then you'll need to reinstall them on the Exec...
....silicon,
Yes Indeed, I did make a full system backup!
and you are talking about something i was not aware it is possible to do???
lets see......
you say......"you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work"......

Yeah - I guess that was what I was suggesting, but I've got no idea how to do this! Sorry.
I wasn't sure which way you'd have done your back up or whether it's possible to extract particular files. I suppose it must be, but I've never done it.
If you still have your XDAIIi then can you copy specific files off it?
Alternatively, do you still have a synchronised documents folder on the PC to which you used to connect it? That should have most of the documents that you'll want to keep.
If not I don't know what to suggest.
Providing your old PDA is still available, you really need a backup program that you can run on both PDAs. For example, something like Sunnysoft's Backup Manager - even a time-limited trial edition may be sufficient. Select and back up the required files/data to SD-card on the old PDA, then move the card to the new PDA. Install the backup program there and recover the files/data with that.
Just be careful of the different program versions, try not to copy system files across, and be prepared to do it a couple of times (or more) until you get it right.

Backup

Hi All!
I know the Desire has a built in auto backup of some parts of the phone to the SD card, but I want to back up the entire phone, programs, settings etc etc. just like I used to be able to do on my Windows Mobile device! And also, it needs to be off the phone, not on the Sd card. Whats the point of backup onto the SD card if you loose your phone! I don't quite get HTC's logic in having their backup only onto the SD card!
Can anybody help?!
Thanks a billion!
David
Try Mybackup Pro. It backs up to SD (yeah i know lol) AND there is an option to have it back up over the internet...can't remember if it is to their servers or sends to your e-mail address. I use the SD option.

Thanks, I will try it!
Do you guys know if the built-in backup function or MyBackup pro backups Market settings too?
I used to use Astro to backup my apps, but first of all everytime I restore it asks me to restore the apps one by one!!!
And secondly it doesn't backup the market so the restored apps ARE NOT updated via Market.
Only app I know does so is Titanium backup but it needs root access...
Thanks
I've had a look at it, it's not the same as WM backup systems. It wont do a complete backup of everything. Seems that a simple one click backup of everything on Androind just isn't possible!
Not clever.
I wonder what it's like on an iPhone. I would assume that since everything goes through iTunes, the entire phone gets backed up. What with this and a numbr of other glaringly mising but basic functionality from Android, I am begining to see why they are still rather low down in the ratings of smartphone systems.
But then again, I used a blackberry 9700 yesterday, and just couldnt believe that people can type on their keyboard!, And I used to have a WM phone with a keyboard.
My perfect phone would be my HTC Desire with a thin slide out keyboard running Android with all the functionality of Windows Mobile!!!
A Pipe dream!!!

Cant you copy your backup from the Sd card to your computer?
Of course, although it's just an unnecessary step! I am used to connecting my phone to my computer and have everything work by itself! I have to install that program and see if it puts everything in an easily identifiable folder.
Windows Mobile - Very functional - but outdated
Android - Really modern and snazzy - Missing essential business functionality!!

How do I access the nandroid backup with phone connected to my pc?

OK, here's my problem. My EVO was smashed last night by a raving drunk psycho (Yes, cops showed up and took him, but I need my nandroid to put on my replacement phone when I get it). The screen is in about 1 million pieces, the entire case is warped as well. But oddly enough, this tough a$$ phone still boots up. I can issue adb commands and such, but can't see jack on the screen. So I know I can boot into recovery mode and whatnot via adb. My problem is this. I know there are 2-3 nandroid backups. How the hell can I get them? I tried putting the sdcard into a reader on my laptop, but to my stupidity I now realize it's in some linux or other file system format, so I can't simply read the card directly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Also, I have nand root acces on the phone if that helps at all.

The sdcard is formatted by the phone as fat32. Put it in an sd card adapter, then into your computer. The files are in the nandroid folder, just copy that full folder. While you are at it, you might as well just copy the full card...and keep the card to put in your next phone, right?
If the card doesn't read in your computer, then it is damaged. There are numerous file recovery programs you can try, but it is questionable to me that your nandroid backup is really worth using a recovery program to save. Your contacts should be in Google and the rest takes 30min top to set up (right?).
If you REALLY want to save it try:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/
It will copy everything into the directory you are in I think.
The backups should be stored in /sdcard/nandroid/
Man, you can ADB into your phone after it got smashed up like that?

Yeah, it's getting txts and emails too apparently. Wifi is connecting to my router too. No sounds at all, no vibration, no screen. But seems the phone is working aside from that. It's crazy.
Got a problem it seems:
Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Program Files (x86)\android-sdk\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT05VHL13839 device
C:\Program Files (x86)\android-sdk\tools>adb pull /sdcard/
pull: building file list...
0 files pulled. 0 files skipped.
C:\Program Files (x86)\android-sdk\tools>
Seems the sdcard went down with the raving alcoholic man.... crap.
Is there any way to run nandroid backup without seeing the screen?
I say, get a micro SD card reader, and put use your PC to do a backup.

As you can see from my prior post, the sdcard appears to be shot. I need some way to run a nandroid backup without being able to see the screen.

boot up the phone and do
Code:
adb shell
then
Code:
reboot recovery
when it reboots redo
Code:
adb shell
then put
Code:
nandroid-mobile.sh --help
and that will give you what you need to do. However if your sd card is shot then your screwed lol. nandroid needs an sd card to work
Yeah, do what mrono suggested, but with a new Micro SD card. Just buy a cheap-o 1GB card or something to run the backup. I've got 3-4 cards around here myself. Maybe you can borrow a card from another phone or a digital camera? Chances are a 256mb card will work as well, or 512mb? A 32 won't work since it's too small. You've of course lost everything else, but you should be able to make a backup.
This is all assuming that the SD Card slot in the phone didn't break in the process, and since the SD card is fried, chances are it did break the slot since those bastards are a pain to fry in the first place.
Thanks guys. I figured that out a little while ago. I just used the sdcard out of my old blackberry. Worked great!

[Q] Titanium Backup on the Galaxy Nexus

How is everyone dealing with application backups on Titanium? specifically backing up TB files off the SGN
how are you pulling the TB backup files OFF the SGN other then using dropbox? when i connect via MTP, the TB backup files do not show up in windows explorer
thanks,
I just drag and dropped them into /TitaniumBackup/ on the root of MTP and it worked.
If it doesn't work, try making a new folder in the root of MTP.
Go into that new folder and copy paste /TitaniumBackup/ into /New Folder/ then after thats done move /TitaniumBackup/ back into the root folder.

yes, it works great but how do you go about moving the newly backed up tb files off the sgn to the pc for safe keeping?
Try sharing a folder on your Windows Machine and using AndSMB Linda File Manager or eXplorer which will allow you to map to that shared drive from your Android Phone over the network. You can then just copy the files directly over your wireless connection.
cant you just copy and paste the folder onto your PC? thats all i do, the storage acts the same as an sdcard on windows 7
Switch to camera mode for large transfers, then switch back.
I flashed a new ROM today and then tried to restore my Titanium back. The ROM is rooted. Titanium went through the steps of restoring, but I coukd see none of the apps in the drawer and I had to reinstall from the Market one by one.
Did this happen to anybody?
EDIT: Silly of me, was using an old version which probably doesn't like ICS. The latest version works fine .
TB current doesnt work on my GN... it freeze on batch restore.
Is it possible to back up apps and settings on to an external flash drive using Titanium Backup if you have a USB host cable and the StickMount app?

Same here.
It looks like the JNI call that Titanium Backup is using to restore the backups is causing a null pointer exception. So far I haven't been lucky googling for an answer.

I'm on verizon stock 4.0.2, rooted.
I have unknown sources ticked (just in case).
It works when I choose the classic method under debugging options, I found out.
I used it yesterday with no issues on my GSN. Used batch back up, installed Android Revolution HD 2.1.2 and restored all apps etc. Worked as expected.
I'm having the same problem as OP stigmax and it doesnt seem like his (my) question got answered.
I used TB and it worked great. Now I want to take the backup files off my SGN and onto my laptop in case something terrible happens to the phone.
The /TitaniumBackup/ folder shows up in MTP and PTP, but both times the folder is empty.
Where did my backups go??
They show up fine on my PC...

Hmm. I've read that TB hasnt been fully optimized for ICS so maybe I'll just chalk it up to that and hope I can still restore if I need to.

What's the best way to backup files from the phone's storage?

I am using Windows 7 and I need to backup my data so I can move to JB. However, when I connect my phone with a USB cable and drag all the files from my phone over to my laptop, it TAKES FOREVER!!!
Also, I think it "times out" or something because in the middle of the process, I'll always get "invalid copy handle" errors and have to start over.
Does anyone know a good, fast way to backup the data on our phones?

Well you can always do "adb pull /sdcard/ C:\directory you want"
Also to backup apps+data, do "adb backup -f C:\directory you want -all -apk -noshared -system" For more info about backing up apps and data, check this thread
Hope I you have drivers installed and know how to use adb
Thanks for the ideas!
I actually tried copying one folder at a time and it's much more reliable. Still slow but at least no time outs.
I'm just glad I could help!
Transferring speed can't be adjusted, since there's a limit from the USB cable...
If there is a corrupt file that directory will fail transfer that directory manually, and avoid the corrupt file.

Use adb or access a shared folder on your computer via wifi using a file manager that supports lan shares. For instance: es file explorer.
