so ehm... what do you really want to know?

What is CDC, PDA and PHONE?
When someone asks "What firmware are you using?", which of these is the correct answer? I see that i have JM5 for PDA and JM1 for PHONE and CDC.

I guees he wants to know which file has the correspondance in odin:
csc --> csc
modem --> phone
code --> pda

My turn to guess
Maybe he wants to know what firmware we use.
In my case, I use :
CODE_I9000XWJM7.tar.md5
MODEM_I9000XXJM3.tar.md5
CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar.md5
from samfirmware.com

Hehe I guess the question was not very clear.
I just to know what each software component is, functionality wise. What does PDA control? Is PHONE the firmware used by the radio? What about CDC?

It's not really that your question wasn't clear, but you're dropping a few words, so... yeah, your question wasn't clear
Anyway, from the pinned topic called "[REF] BIG FAQ! {Flash/Root HOWTO} {ADB&Tutorials} {T&T} {FW-Guide} [MUST READ!]" :
3.Why are there multiple files in the firmware archive/folder?/Why do I get three different versions when using *#1234#?
Galaxy S firmware updates come in three parts:
-The CODE itself (called PDA). This is android and all the applications that come with it. (The archives/folders will be named after the version of this file)
-The MODEM (called Phone). This is the firmware of the wireless chipset of the device and will operate you WiFi, Blutooth and 3G/2G/GSM connections. (ie Radio ROM)
-The CSC (short for Customer Specific Customization). This includes connection data for the broadband networks as well as apps that are only available in certain languages/intended for a specific area.
If we ask for your firmware, we want to know all three!
Since not all of these require updates simultaneously, often then CSC and MODEM files will have lower version numbers.

[Q] extracting firmware from S8500

Hi,
I was wondering if there is any way to extract the firmware from my S8500T handset? I'm wanting to do this as there is no copy of this firmware available and I want it as a back-up in case things go wrong with flashing to other firmwares.
my S8500T runs S8500MBJF2, S8500HUTJF2
any ideas?
thanks!

Ah do you mean 'Product Name'? In sTune all I get is xxxxxxxxxxxx.
I've manually changed my CSC from HUT (ie. Three Hutchison australia) to KOR but I can change that back if needed...

Yes, correct.
xxxxxxxx I saw several times.
This means NV item 2757 (HEX Value) is empty.
Kies without valid Product Code do nothing.

P.S:

Attention!
I'm not sure. But for instance S8500R seems to have problems with normal Firmware... maybe incompatibility.

Hmm, so can I somehow get a valid Product Code from Samsung?
And yes, the S8500T is not compatible with normal firmware, as the T version runs on 850/2100Mhz bands, not the 900/2100 on standard firmware. This is the reason I want to extract the firmware from my phone, as I'd like it for a backup.
Thanks for your help adfree

If kies cannot update your phone, first point to verify is the installed csc in Pre-Configuration setting. For kies to upgrade your phone, you need to install a full firmware for your region, and select the correct csc file in Pre-Configuration (after flashing).
Product codes don't change by themselves. So if you never changed yours, maybe it shouldn't have changed by itself. But if it did, then you need to revert it back to it's original.
Caution here, the process involved in changing product is not for noobs, so be careful if you choose to do so.
There are lots of tutorials on product code change in this forum. Just need a patient search to find them.
You can as well read this tutorial from another forum. I hope it helps out.
hi all,
Yes it's possible and it's verry simple, but you need to flash your phone twice.
Here is the solution:
Flash S8500XXJID (the only one capable of changing the product code).
Change your product code #272#HHMM# >>XEF for exemple.
Flash with S8500XXJL2 or other original fw for your region.
Enjoy!
Flash S8500XXJID (the only one capable of changing the product code).

Who told you that?!!!!!
Any 1.2 FW is capable of changing the product code through the pre-config menu
the method that spacks mentioned is for the people who don't want to lose any data through flashing or pre-configuring their phones
Please dig in things more before talking about it
XXJID is not that special

Carrier upgrade question

Hi all, new to the board and hoping to get at least some enlightening answers to my troubled mind. As a computer tech I see these new generation of smart mobiles as a small computer with an operating system where the user can upgrade, install and customize as he wants.
That's where my troubles begin I just bought a Gio s5660 for my daughter the phone came with Froyo android 2.2.1 installed. When I came to this country I didn't know there were so many restrictions imposed by the carries regarding upgrading it, in short to pay for a service that I can do it myself.
My question is if I do upgrade my phone lets say with a rom from France region will it work anywhere in the world independent of carrier?? is the language of a region the reason we have to update according to the carriers?.
Appreciate any enlightening,
TIA,
JLart
at first, welcome to XDA.
there are specific versions of the galaxy gio, and not only the GT-s5660.
most have a letter behind it, like the GT-s5660m, GT-s5660L. and there's the V model too, and a korean model is SHW-....
where are you from/where did you bought the gio?
this is so I can know wich type you have, as some types have different hardware, and can't just flash firmware, as they need specific firmware for their device, or you can't make calls, or wifi doesn't work...
firmwares get rolled out per provider, and sometimes they have 1 or 2 preinstalled aplications, but these can be removed easily, if you have root acces, but thats a different story.

-->> The one I am holding is GT-s5660 apparently from Italy since one of the labels on the box and the user guide is in Italian.

--->> I am in Israel and staying until the end of the year after that I head back to Brazil. I bought the phone here not directly with the carrier. The phone is unlocked and as soon I put chip from a different carrier some apps change according to the chip I put in.

Hello IM also a new user and looking for a confirmation on this. Is it safe to assume that, since the phone is unlocked does it matter what region I am in??? Installing any ROM would be ok then??
10x for the reply
Hi, would like to say ty again to voetbalremco for his much precise instructions.
went to the site he said, downloaded an German open version of android 2.3.6 installed and everything works perfect with any carrier.
To answer meudroids question you correct, the phone open so you can upgrade on a GSM phone so that uses a SIM card. At least thats how I understood it better experts on the forum will be able to help u on that.

[Q] Korean Version SHV-370K - ROM/GroupPlay/ChatON

Hey people,
I recently purchased a Korean variant of the S4 Mini. The model is SHV-370K. To my findings, its equal to the main version I9195. Is that correct? I do have the NFC chip installed. My question is, can I flash an official ROM like the ones used in the I9195? I have to much KOREAN language apps and I dont think I am prepared to root it. If I can flash an official ROM on this via ODIN?, will I still be able to get the OTA? My current version is 4.2.2. And checking on Sammobile I have the latest. The Korean stuff is just to much of a hassel and I am not sure if I will even get an update. Can I flash an official ROM and not lose warranty and root?
My second question is that I cannot make Group Play work on 2 of these S4 Mini's. They just dont connect. It says Network Lost and sometimes failed to join group. I've tried working it over with NFC and Wifi Direct. Normal gallery pictures and everything send easy, just this app that I really really want to use. Would be great if some one would help me.
My last question is that ChatON keeps giving an Error while checking for push services. I have tried everything. Changed networks, tried Mobile Networks. All my apps are up to date, even the annoying Samsung Push Service. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much people.
Have a great day.
Oh and I think its Carrier Branded? Cuz it has this Olleh writen on its back cover?
So ChatON and Group Play is working after they have been updated most recently. I did update them before but they dint seem to work. The current updates work good. Any one about the ROM issue? Would love some help <3.

you can only use a korean K rom, or a modify rom for the K version, otherwise you can brick your phone.

Hi guys,
Have you found any solution to this problem? I'm also an [almost] happy owner of a Korean-branded S4 Mini and as USSD codes don't work, was told that firmware needs to be changed. But this being specifically a Korean phone, I'm not sure other ROMs out there will even be 100% compatible.
Thanks,
Vit

Thanks, but I don't think I have to enter a password, since other phones work without it. Unless it's somehow phone-specific, but my operator reps would probably have told me (instead they just said the firmware needs to be changed). What secret menu are we talking about? perhaps aI could investigate. At any rate, if there someone has managed to flash the Korean version of the phone with a more "universal" firmware, I'd like to know. Thanks!

Please forgive me as I'm a total noob, but after your last reply it hit me: we're probably talking about different USSDs. I meant that my operator USSD codes didn't work, the ones that I send to find out my remaining balance and to also enable/disable services etc. (e.g. I would send *444#2#1 to find out my remaining balance), not the phone's own USSD codes (like the service menus etc, e.g. the IMEI check with *#06#). Operator USSD codes just don't work - the phone either sits trying to connect for a few minutes (locking the phone down during this time), or just says that the signal is too weak. So I guess I do need to install a different firmware to fully unlock it.
Thanks for trying to help though, I'm learning new stuff!

Mate I have the same problem here. The USSD codes just dont work. My balance check does work though. All I have noticed that USSDS that need two steps dont work. Example to transfer credits, I type *456# and in return it should ask me what number I need to transfer my credits, but it just doesnt work. I have tried the menu but no idea what that is all about. Still cannot find what to do.
Secondly I met some one at the forums who has the same device as ours. HE said installing Cynogen Mod is working and it doesnt effect us having a model of SHV something. LOL. So I dont know if I should go ahead and flash a custom rom. I would rather flash an official rom but no one is helping here and I cant seem to find any. Like maybe we could flash an english rom from UK. Something official like the normal I9195 have! Not some korean ones.
New Update.
Hey people! I just got an OTA update and all I see new is a Google Drive icon. The update is still on 4.2.2 and not 4.3. It was about 96mb of file size. How can I take out the changelog and read what bug fixes it brings?

Samsung s20 Ultra Exynos ( Stuck on February 1st 2020 Update )

Hello everyone, this is my very first post here
I hope I posted this in the correct section of the forums. If not please point me out where I should place it! And sorry for the intrusion!
So basically my S20 Ultra ( Exynos variant SM-G988B/DS ) is stuck on February 1st, 2020 Update. My current version is G988BXXU1ATB3 /G988BOXM1ATB5 /G988BXXU1ATB2
I am pretty sure there have been tons of updates mainly to address the early camera issues, but I can't seem to make it visible to my current device so I can upgrade.
Is there a workaround in order to 'force' an update or I am missing something there?
Excuse my noobness
And nice to meet you all!

There are few threads crated on a daily that ask for the same. Just learn to flash it on your own via odin. No problem if you are noob... the problem if you don't use the search function and learn and move on from your noobness.
Download the firmware via SamFirm and flash it with odin. Stop waiting to receive OTA. Stay up to date, if you see there is a new update repeat those steps and you will always have the newest firmware.

This solution will not void your warranty. After you downloaded the firmware via SamFirm you will have in the extracted folder two kinds of a file that's called CSC. One of them is called HOME_CSC you need to flash/choose the HOME one in order to keep all your data.

SamFirm does it for you. Just enter G988B in the device slot and OXM for the CSC slot. It's going to show you the right/newest one.
Just an update, I successfully updated to the latest firmware using ODIN, I was nervous at first but the process is really straightforward. Still having focus problems with my s20 ultra tho, but that is a story for another
Thanks, everyone for guiding me to the right path!
