[Q] Hulu working on EVO stock-rooted Froyo 2.2?

Isn't Hulu supposed to be playable on Froyo? Doesn't seem to work on the Evo with netarchy's Froyo stock-rooted ROM. I've been researching this topic for a fix, and I've seen something done for Nexus One and CM6 users but I don't want to loose 4G. I thought being able to watch Hulu was one of the most hyped about features of having Froyo.

You need a hacked version of Flash, and to change your UAString to Desktop. Search in the Nexus One forum for details.

Engadget has a walkthrough for the Nexus One. All but actually playing a video worked great on my Evo running CM6 :/. maybe you will have more luck on the Sense browser..

Did you by chance already have flash installed? If yes, you need to uninstall it first.... If no, what was the error? Did you use adb to install? or? I have that version installed on my phone (running cm6)...

I have Hulu working just fine via the default browser on CM6 nightly and RC1. Read the instructions and try again.

I appreciate the help fellas, but I'm looking for a stock-rooted Froyo solution. With the CM6 ROM you have to give up 4G, FM Radio, etc.

How do I go about uninstalling Flash? I tried installing the apk straight up with estrong.

1) Uninstall Flash from the Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All menu.
2) Install the hacked Nexus One version of Flash with Hulu support, via ADB.
3) Open any page in your browser then go to the url "about:debug" (without the quotes) and then go to Menu>Settings. Scroll all the way down to the bottom, select UAString, and change from Android to Desktop.
4) Go to http://www.hulu.com/
5) Enjoy.

The leaked Sense 2.2 ROM has Flash 10.1 installed from the get-go, so you can't uninstall it in a traditional way. If you go into /system/app/ there is install_flash_player.apk. I renamed it "install_flash_player.apkz" (this makes it so Android doesn't recognize it, pretty much the same as just deleting it) so I could see what that would change. It doesn't remove Flash 10.1 from Menu > Settings > Applications, but it did stop Flash from loading in the browser. You could try that, but I don't know how far it'd get you.

I tried that way. Still get the can't install error. Flash
Uninstall is greyed out in stock 2.2 with root.

if you're rooted, use adb, shell in, navigate to where the apk is in system/app, rm it, then navigate to the data/data/ folder that the data is stored, rm that too. reboot. install the modified flash apk.
if you know part of the file name (adobe, or flash, or whatever), use adb shell, then
find -name "*partofthenameyouknow*.*"
it'll spit out the locations of the apk, data, and cache. then just rm -rf all those files. reboot. install the modified flash apk

Im getting closer. I did what you said. Was able to get the Flash 10.1 from the Nexus forum installed. When I got to Hulu, it still gives me "not available on your platform" error.
Edit: I forgot the about:debug command. Although, I did that, it still didnt work. I then downloaded the Hulu app made by someone, and
whala, Hulu is working.

what hulu app? I could not locate it.... man this looks like a pain in the rear.... no way to simply change the way hulu see's my EVO? like a useragent string or is flash giving me away?

Actually, not a PIA at all.
Just fyi, I didnt use any ADB commands, just did it all on the phone using SUFBS.
1> Simply what was mentioned above. Remove the Adobe Flash stuff from the System/app and Data/Data area.
- I did this by renaming the directories using SUFBS on my phone.
2> Reboot Phone.
3> Install the Modified Flash (Found in the Nexus Thread)
- Once again, I just downloaded on the phone and used SUFBS to install.
4> Reboot Phone
5> Go to Browser, type about:debug and GO. Then go to Settings and down at the bottom, change the UAString to Desktop.
6> Whala.

Is Hulu still working for you guys? I get "The requested video cannot be displayed in your region" message now. I read that this will happen after you reboot....

If you still havent got it to work,grab Android Mate from the market and use that to install the hacked flash version.It will ask if you want to replace the original flash so there is no need to uninstall it first.Then do the about:bug from your browser and you'll be good to go.

Thanks. I was 99% sure, but I wanted confirmation before I wasted any of my time.
I am an Unrevoked3 user (I know, I know. No lectures please), and was pretty pissed about this. Then I discovered that NAND is unlocked when I'm in the ClockworkMod recovery. So I booted into recovery and did the following on my PC:

mount -o rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mount -o rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /data
cd /system
mv install_flash_player.apk install_flash_player.ap_
cd lib
mv libflashplayer.so libflashplayer.s_
cd /data/data
rm -r com.adobe.flashplayer
cd com.android.browser/app_plugins/
rm -r com.adobe.flashplayer
umount /system
umount /data
exit
adb reboot
Then I installed the hacked APK, did the UA fix and was rockin and rollin.
Note the remount flag is not necessary above, because the partitions are not already mounted. In fact, if you try to use the remount flag, it will fail. I have .tar backups of the two directories deleted, if anyone by chance needs them to restore.

When you reboot, the UA reverts to default and you have to change it back to Desktop again.

App doesn't get removed!? Tried nearly everything!

I'm trying to remove the old facebook and twitter apps from my phone.
They're both stored in /system/app folder.
I've tried everything, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer and tried deleting them through adb they just do not go!
Has anyone got any ideas?

You can't remove them. Simples.
Well you can but you have to remove them from recovery using adb when connected to a PC. We don't have full root when the phone is in the OS and the system folder is read only. Recovery gives you write access but then you have to get in from a command prompt.
Look up the development package from HTC and how to use adb if it's that important. You gain nothing by removing those 2 apps btw other than you won't see them anymore.

It's just because they were in the /system/app folder so when i tried to download the updates for them they wouldn't install.
But I've got the new versions anyway now so it's all good.

[Q] cannot delete .APK files!

Hi All
Apologies if this is in the wrong place or if it has been answered elsewhere, I have been searching all weekend, so hopefully not!
I have recently installed gingervillain v1.0 on my Desire, and wanted to remove some .APKs for programs I do not use, such as DSPManager.
In an effort to do this I have purchased the paid versions of Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. Using Root Explorer I have tried deleting the .APKs from system/app, but to no avail.
In Titanium Backup I have tried using the uninstall feature, but the apps in question, persisted.
So I began running searches in Google and found a few articles which claimed you could for example delete the .APKs in the ZIP archive close and resign, but I tried this several times and could not get it to work.
I have now downloaded the Android SDK and USB driver for ADB. But when attempting to utiilise ADB to delete the .APKs CMD returns "'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
After searching the XDA forums i came across a post which stated I needed to amend the path under Environment Variables to the location of the ADB, which I have done (and rebooted my PC).
I am still receiving the ADB is not a ... statement, in CMD.
I am running windows 7 and have tried the above with and without HTC Sync installed.

I think you need to be S-Off to delete system apps whilst booted in Android. You can delete the apps from the zip file before you flash it.

Thanks Googlejelly, none of the articles i followed mentioned S-Off but I will look into it. Regarding the deletion of aps from the zip, is this something you have done yourself? Everytime I try too I get Error 0x80004005. I did unzip which allowed me to delete without the error, but after flashing the rom, I got stuck in a bootloop.

for deleting anything on the system file itself, u def need s-off. i was on a sgs fascinate rooted which came witrh s-off included in its root. so when i came to a htc desire, i figured it would b the same. but it wasnt. u need to s-off to delete sysrem apks like google talk, file manager, etc

if you want to delete apps while android is running you need to be S-OFF.
you can also edit .zip before flashing.
since you get a bootloop you either delete something you should not OR you have to edit updater script (but since you wrote about GingerVillain i doubt it, so probably you just delete some important stuff)

Thanks dzumagos. Do you know if I need to resign the zip, after editing? Also do you know why I might be getting the error which is stopping me from deleting the files in the zip?

You shouldn't need to unzip the file to take out the apks, just use winzip to access the the zipped file, delete which apks you don't want then exit out of winzip and flash it, if you delete something important it'll probably loop.
I've done this with leedroid 2.3d and took out footprints,teeter,stocks and a couple of other apks, it flashed fine with no problems.

Run CMD as administrator, then change to the directory where you have the adb.exe (In my case c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\)

Then type in mount /system
Now, you can remove files with the rm /system/app/(APPFILENAME).apk command.
When finished type umount /system then exit
If you need the list of files, then type ls in the command prompt.
Worked for me, S-ON.

Because from what I read you are writing wrong commands.
Dont write adb if you are already in the shell, because that's not a valid command.

All I do is when I download a rom is open it using WinRar and delete the files straight from the archive. I don't extract the files from the archive, just edit it. I add my own font, notification sound, delete the boot animation and I delete some system apps that I don't use. This beats having to S-Off (I have it anyway) but it is a nice work around.

GoogleJelly - I did the following, uninstalled 7zip, installed winzip, right clicked the archive with the rom, selected "open with winzip", navigated to the system\app\ folder, right clicked DSPManager.apk, selected delete and got this... (see attached). It just freezes everytime and i get the (not responding) postfix
Perfectly willing to accept I am an idiot who has done something wrong. But I really do fail to see what.
Help, this is so frustrating!!!

Thanks, madffrogs, it work. In this case, I am just removing some 'excessive' files from a CyanogenMod files, and used 7zip.

[Q] Stuck on Google Boot screen, Can still access CWM. How to proceed?

Okay so my father was about to flash to my rom. We Wiped data, cache, delvik, and installed rom. Said it worked and rebooted the phone. Phone tossed us into the CWM again and we tried flashing again and it gives us error #7. Soooo, We did NOT make a backup and every time we try to reflash the rom it gives us error 7. We can't get the Phone to be detected by the computer so we can at least grab his data. The thing here is we can't afford to lose the data on the phone (I know, should have made a backup). Any advice on how to proceed would help significantly. I've never seen this kind of issue in my years of rooting android phones. It just sits at the Google screen and doesn't go anywhere.
Phone is Verizon Galaxy nexus running (was) MIUI
Update: Tried flashing back his previous rom (MIUI) and I'm getting the error 7 again. Even though that past rom worked perfectly. This is all very frustrating.

What data do you want to keep? Internal storage won't be wiped when flashing ROMs, and as for app data, contacts, SMS, etc, as long as you can enter CWM, you can pull them out of the phone with "adb pull".

Well the problem is I don't have the Nexus adb installed onto the PC, so I can't connect to the nexus through USB. Can I install adb and everything without being in the rom? also I'm trying to get the Titanium backup folder and the photos.

If you can get into recovery, that means you can use adb. Just install the driver (if you are on Windows) and adb should work.

adb pull [remote file] [local file]
You can pull the whole folder from your phone. The folder of Titanium Backup should be /sdcard/TitaniumBackup or something similar. For photos it is in /sdcard/DCIM

I tried to install ADB for Nexus and it failed and I ran into many roadblocks. Can you link me a W8 64bit guide I can follow?

I got ADB installed but cannot get the pull command to work. It's adb /pull and it's in a 0 folder and then Titanium backup and in the Tina user folder . What would be the command?

"adb pull /storage/emulated/0/YOUR-DIRECTORY/YOUR-FILE C:\" or something like that.

[T-Mobile] Restore Stock Preloaded Data after rooting.

This archive contains the missing apks and stickers that are lost when using the HTC Dev unlock tool.
You can install the apks inside manually, but the png files must be placed into /data/preload/ in order for the gallery app to find them.
Instructions for re-installation. (Busybox must be installed)

su
cd /data/
tar -xvf /sdcard/preload.tgz
chown root:root /data/preload
chmod 771 /data/preload
chmod 644 /data/preload/*
pm install /data/preload/Flashlight.apk

Hey I know this is not specifically related but everytime I remove an app via TB they come back upon reboot (T-Mobile Tv, Lookout, etc etc)

How would I go about executing these commands? I have tried a command prompt with the phone powered into the OS and with it in fastboot but continue to get device not recognized. Could I place the file on my phone and use terminal emulator?

Problem fixed! I needed to update my adb tools, was working with outdate ones because they did everything I needed until now.

I tried the commands, but the tar command doesn't seem to work. Do I have to install something to make tar work?
I used Root Explorer to extract the files, then moved them to /data/preload, then changed the permissions using adb. I think I got it correct. How can I tell if the stickers are installed correctly? What uses them? I saw a comment about the gallery but I can't see where that uses them?

Take a pic and edit it. If you can use the stickers you see in folder and the apps are install then I assume all went well.

Couldn't install apps from adb
Everything in the op worked up to the point where I tried to install the Flashlight and Calculator apks. I got the following error-
pm install /data/preload/Flashlight.apk
pkg: /data/preload/Flashlight.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_URI]
I was able to use a file manager to find the apks in the /data/preload/ folder and install them through android.
Is this enough to receive any OTAs? Would I need to convert them to system apps?
