New Froyo Update Available - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just found a new Update on the htc support site.
I think there is no thread about this yet.
Here's the link: http://www.htc.com/europe/support.aspx
Thanx for the attention

RUU is already out, I've been running it a week now

ah, okay, didn't notice...
can you tell me the main changes?
browser speed improved`?

Keyboard has the mic for voice input (but doesn't work well with an english accent!!), Flash is still the last beta so best to install official release once booted, browser seems quicker (but I only use it when away from PC as there's no point viewing the 'Net on a phone), other than that it's just 2.2
Worth getting if you're not rooting, mind

[Q] Unable to root - what does this mean to me?

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the stupid question, but I've updated to the latest HTC release and am aware that I can't root anymore. (Have not done it before anyway).
But does this mean that I can't download any Roms unless they're officially released by HTC, or that I can download other custom Roms, but just can't get root access to my phone, or something else?
Once again, sorry for the dumb question - but I just want to know what my limitations are now that I've updated.
Cheers
Adza
until the new HBoot is hacked, you cannot root and/or use any other ROMs than provided by HTC themselves. If you intended to do it, you should have done it before updating Otherwise, just wait a bit until the devs figure out a way around it.
Hi Waebi,
Thanks for your reply. And I understand now - cheers.
I wasn't planning on Rooting, until I found that the official HTC release has screwed me over with no Bluetooth voice dialing. I've been hanging out for that with Froyo that I'm considering ditching this phone now and going to buy something else that has it included.
Cheers
Adza
well yes, it's always sad to see a feature one wants isnt available :/
But I thought they had made quite a fuss about the voice dialing thingy and actually said it was included? Are you sure you didn't just not "find" it?
Hi Waebi,
There appear to be others who can't find it on the HTC Desire either.
Other phone releases seem to have it, as well as the custom Roms.
I naturally assumed that HTC's official release would also include it but it would appear as though they have deliberately removed it for some reason.

[Q] Am I asking for too much?

Hi guys,
I love my Desire HD, I really do. Great phone. I get asked all the time what make it is... very nice owning it... BUT I hate Orange UK and their pesky interfering with the ROM. Some things just plain don't work.
So (and I have looked) there are lots of ROMs out there that I can Flash, but it's all very confusing to me.
What I need clear guidance on is:
1. Can I get a nice clean Genuine HTC Rom on it (with Sense)?
2. Will that give me OTA updates to Gingerbread or any future upgrades?
Sorry, but I seem to only find Mod guidance on here, but Im one of those people who like to put things back the way they were designed to be... (Im that sad...)
Ta for any help you can offer

1. Yes, if you just want stock rom you can root your UK branded Rom (if its base 1.72 you have to downgrade first check this guide, thats what i used and there's also a link to a downgrade guide in it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996) get S-OFF and install the official RUU (R om U pdate U tility) from 2.3.3. Or when you have root and S-OFF you can flash Clockworkmod recovery (the thing you need to flash any custom made stuff) and from there any custom rom you like. This is recommended because with it you can backup your current branded Rom in case you need to have it repaired and still want to be under warranty.
2. With official RUU you will get future OTA updates directly from HTC, but when you install 2.3.3 RUU you're already up do date. When you have a Custom Rom you will get updates from your rom Chef that you download over wifi/3g directly to your phone and flash it through Clockworkmod recovery
-> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
This is stock rom with improvements. Look at the features list, it will convince you I'd say its the most popular custom rom and a good point to start.
btw Orange is the best provider in terms of Data plans in my country. You get most out of your money. But the branding and support is horrible They have absolutely no clue what their talking about. When i asked them if my DHD was branded when i bought it the sales assistant didnt even know what that is... She had to ask someone else first. If thats the same in UK you're on a good way with installing the Rom YOU want. You'll get support here from guys that do even better than the guys from HTC. Believe me.
I've only ever met one sales assistant who knew what I was talking about, I felt strangely attracted to her...
I've tried a few roms and settled on cm7 for now, best thing to do is junk the stock rom and get flashing, the improvements in battery life should be enough to convince you lol

Thanks guys, this is really helpful....
The thing that tipped me over the edge was a trip to my local Orange Shop, where I went to get some answers as to why the Hot Spot feature wasn't working on the phone. I then had to spend 10 minutes explaining to the girl what the hotspot feature was, then DEMONSTRATE it to HER!
Orange guys must have been tinkering with the rom. Tethering and hotspot options worked out of the box for me but you better switch to a custom rom to get those features back and other goodies. Besides, it's funny .
Yep, like all the others recommended custom rom is the way forward. I was in your position before I started the flashing madness, I can promise you, you wouldn't regret it.. And we are so lucky to have such an active development section...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Yep if you follow all the instructions it is nigh on impossible for anything to go wrong. Even if it does however, due to the active forums, you will get an answer in no time!
Don't do it, once you start you can't stop flashing save yourself and run away while you can
On a serious note, the battery life improvement and virtual 24hr help with this forum are good enough reasons on there own to do it, you won't regret it...
Ok Guys.... I'm gonna give you a laugh.
I've had my DHD since March (from Orange) and like all of you I am now not happy with (what you state is Stock ROM)
At the very tender age of 53yrs and now burnt our with computing and the like I rarely understand all the lingo/terms used Etc ;((
After calling on a phone 'expert' shop yesterday and was willing to shed cash if they could root & flash (presumably after de-branding) I saw the blank expression on their face.... "Nope... we don't know what your talking about"
Hmmm (I thought) So now I am determined to scare myself to death and ATTEMPT to get my phone to where it should be! But I am SOOoo lost on all the termanology used.
I am on 2.2.1
Kernal 2.6.32.21-g46445e7
Build 1.84.61.2
At the present time I am running on SPB 3D and have Laucher Pro installed as I was exerimenting with home page mods.
Still awaiting Ginger and can't see me getting it from Orange (UK) for any time yet. Phone does som curios things at times and seems to be getting buggy.
Phone calls drop, incomming second caller now boots me from my original call, icons vannish Etc.
Oh... Not keen on all this Facebook lark which the stock Orange thing has installed.
So.. ok, Not now happy with my DHD, but don't know where to start in geriatric terms.
Love this forum tho'
Hi
I am sending you a PM with a full guide and all the tools you require

Installing new market give Force close

hi
after i the new market installed automatically now its not working and show force close , when i uninstall the updates it work .\
any Solution?
thanks.
You can leave the market updates and carry on with an earlier version of the market.
It has the same content, it's just in a different layout. Plus many people prefer the old layout, so you won't be alone.
Or
You can search the thread of the ROM you're using and see if anyone has a fix for this same problem. If you can't find anything, ask in the thread.
You're probably to get better help there, since it's very likely someone else has encountered this same problem with the ROM and replies are a whole lot quicker on there.
Good luck!
i uninstall the updates a few minutes will automatically instal the updates.
thanks.
Im not sure if something funny is going on (Maintenance maybe) as i flashed my phone a week ago and the new market installed fine flashed yesterday and still no auto update to the new style market maybe they pulled the update for the time being? can any one confirm?
If you want, you both could try finding the .apk for the new style market (it'll be on these forums somewhere) and install that over your current one.
I'm not really an expert in this, I'm just advising you based on what I would do.

I did with apk ,doesn't work

Well all I can suggest is that you ask in the thread of the ROM you're using.
Thank u , but when i applied revolution Hd Rom the problem solved , i think the problem is in superuser.apk ,
It might not be related but there is a little bug in some of the MIUI roms where the Market crashes which is easily fixed by going to Settings - Language & Input and choosing English (even if the phone is already showing English). It then changes from EN to English (United States) and the problem is solved. It is covered in the FAQ of those roms. You might try something similar for your situation and rom in the future.

ICS for users outside the USA

Hi everyone - just wondered if everyone in the neglected zones (i.e. everywhere Acer is refusing to release ICS for the A100) could re-double the pressure on their local Acer support to see if they will release ICS for "the common man"
I put in a request and this is what I got back (so helpful - not):
Response Via Email(Sunil Kumar BVL) - 19/07/2012 12.33 PM
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Acer UK.
We apologize for the delay in responding to your e-mail.
We understand your concern and regret the inconvenience caused to you.
There has been no further updates to when there will be further ICS FOTA updates, for A100 tablet.
For further assistance please do not hesitate to e-mail or contact us on 0871 760 1000 (UK), 0818 202 210 (Eire).

They really really want people to buy an alternative as soon as possible don't they?
Nexus 7, despite lack of MicroSD and HDMI, looks like the only answer dammit!

install leaked ics
root it
unlock bootloader
install CWM
install jellybean for christs sake.
if you need a repair just format every single partition so the service center can't tell if your tablet got rooted and your warrentee will sti9ll be there

Or just install the official ics rom that zeronull released though the stock recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1611696
Or install one of the hc versions that are known to ota to ics. The only thing stopping you from ota'ing to ics is the version of hc you are currently on.

I could not work out the process for installing the leaked ICS - it seemed as if a small pre-OTA download was required before the main ICS update could be installed. That is why I was rather hoping to just get stock ICS (for christs sake) - and of course I would then also be able to buy and watch Play store films.
I am joining a forum well down the track and looking over zillions of past posts to find the correct way to root and update the rom on this thing is tricky. I am not a complete noob having rooted and custom rom'ed my past 4 Android devices - phones and tablets, but all of them have had little details which if you got wrong could end up bricking them. Not keen to do that thanks.
Also, I guess I just get a bit peeved at how we get everything months late here in the UK - we are not exactly a techno backwater.
And I do think I am right to be peeved at the pathetic effort from Acer UK support (oxymoron)
Anyway - I finally got ICs last Thursday (26th July 2012). Now I am super peeved because it has screwed up Adobe Flash (useful here in the UK to watch BBC iPlayer and other BBC news videos. Looks like the root and custom ROM option is going to be the way to go after all.

If you're looking for help on rooting unlocking and flashing etc check the guide in my sig, it in turn has links for threads pertaining to each process. Really the only thing to do is READ. I'm not singling you out, but a lot skip over stuff and that's when mistakes happen.
The process is all scripted now. Simple as (once adb is up)
Run root script
Run boot loader unlock script
Delete or rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Install recovery
Boot into recovery, backup, flash as normal.
Overly simplified rundown, but accurate. All of my ROMs run checks for device ID but not all do, so I would suggest for safety to look only here for ROMs. That guide also links to some for the a100.
If you have questions or concerns ask before guessing and you'll do fine. That's if you choose to go this route, of course.
Tapatalked from my Galaxy S II.
Thanks everyone for your advice and help.
I am now very happy with Flex Reaper. Everything backed up using nandroid on CWM.
Everything runs sweetly and with the exception of Polaris Office (a shame - it looks as if it is better than QuickOffice). I looked to see if changing the build.prop model declaration would fix it (there are reports of this working for the A500) but all A100 ROM versions seem to state the model as simply being A100 and I am not keen on tinkering unless I know others have checked out the results in advance.
If anyone has a solution for this I would be interested.

Take a look at the build.prop linuxsociety is working on, it has the A500 model change as well as plenty of tweaks for performance. I haven't used it myself as I'm running my own variants of jellytime and/or CM10, but for ICS it will do perfectly. He's working on a jellybean version as well.

8.1 on my UK version

I've only just had my new 64GB RT.
I'm in the UK and want to install the 8.1 beta version. I have read lots on how's it not available in the UK as of yet. Can anyone tell me if it's possible and the difficulties in getting this beta onto my device.
Thanks
It can be done apparently. You would need to change some registry keys so your device identifies as EN-US, install the EN-US language pack, install 8.1, then install EN-GB ontop of that again unless your alright with things being spelt wrong.
Thanks for that. It seems a bit long winded, I may just wait until MS release a beta for us in the UK, which hopefully they will some time soon.

It's easy enough to do, but you need to change the install language registry key (not whatever language/region etc you have it "set" to - it's the original install language) to one of the supported languages, download the hotfix that activates the ability to install the update, then install it.
From memory, the key to change is HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\Language\InstallLanguage
Microsoft advice on the various TechNet threads I've read is not to do it.
Thanks for the replies, is there any specific reason that we in the UK are not included in the 8.1 beta versions. Is there any chance that we may soon?
I managed to install 8.1 (UK) after Tuesdays updates by just going to windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/preview on the Surface.
I tried when 8.1 first became available and it was not working due to the English(US) language being the only English language covered initially.
It may of been a fault but it installed absolutely fine and then let me download the update from the store. Though, I've just gone back to 8 this morning as it's a tad buggy at the moment (some apps showing updates when there isn't any, apps crashing like Photos and News and some just not working properly like Reader).
Uk is now officially allowed to update to 8.1. No language tweaks or hacks necessary.
I finally did it last night but didn't do a back up as I couldn't find a thumb drive. So I guess I'm on it until the final comes out later in the year.
I haven't had time to play yet as it was very late in the night, so in a nutshell what are the differences in 8.1?
Thanks
If you need to go back to 8 then I have recoveries available..
As for the differences, I wouldnt worry about them, not much point in telling you things you dont have and havent seen, just know that 8.1 is better
