[Q] What exactly does Nandroid backup? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know it does the ROM, apps, accounts, settings etc but now that I have installed:
1. A custom ROM (Virtuous 2.6)
2. A custom Kernel (Adrynalyne's V1 for Virtuous)
3. A custom theme (rEVOlution)
4. Various mods (mostly recommended by RMK40)
So will all these things also get backed up or do I have to install the theme, mods, kernel again if restoring?
Thanks

Everything
Everything will be backed up, my nands be 500mb or more, it's boot, system, data, datadata, cache, sd-ext, android-secure, and recovery images!

Thanks. So I dont have to reinstall the kernel and the mods! Thats a big relief!

backups and flashing

Can someone explain a few things about backups and ROM flashes, please?
I've got a custom ROM on my Desire, and I'm using an Ext partition to hold my apps using App2SD.
I've run a full backup with Titanium Backup.
If I want to wipe and flash a new ROM, how does it work?
I do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic.
I then flash a new ROM. New ROM will presumably be faced with the apps I've already got on my SD card ext partition.
Do they just install back, or do they cause problems?
If I reinstall Titanium Backup on the new ROM and restore everything, do I end up with new ROM and all my old apps back as they were before?
Or do I need to wipe the ext partition too, before doing a restore?
Any pointers would be great.
Ric
Doing a factory reset wipes all apps so if you do that before flashing the ROM all the apps will be gone from your ext partition.
You can then restore your apps using titanium backup. Be careful though, your market apps are fine to restore but you should be very selective about restoring system apps. I only restore data on the green coloured system apps to get back things like SMS, my custom sense layout, that sort of thing.
If you go from sense to non-sense ROMs then you may not even want to do this much.

[Q]ROM and Kernel Updates

Hey guys,
Still relatively new to flashing/upgrading ROMs. I have CM 6.1 and pershoots kernel flashed. If I want to upgrade pershoots from ROM manager, do I need to select the wipe/cache data option in order to upgrade? Does that mean I have to backup my sms, bookmarks, etc? Thanks in advance
Ok here's a brief breakdown for you.
When flashing KERNELS you only wipe cache and dalvik cache (can be found under advance settings.
When flashing ROMS you wipe everything , data/cache/dalvik.
Make sure you make a nand backup just incase you don't like the rom / kernel you've flashed.
As far as backing up sms and other things saved to your current rom, you wouldn't have to as your only flashing the kernel.
Now if your flashing to a new rom for example.
Flashing from CM to Virtous
Then yes you would need to backup all your sms and etc...
If your running CM and want to upgrade to a newer version of CM. I would usually just wipe cache and dalvik and flash ontop of current rom. No sms back needed. Unless you want to start from scratch and reload the rom fresh. Then yes backup your sms. Hope this helps.

thanks luis, I really appreciate your information, it was very helpful. What does wiping the cache/dalvik entail though? As in, would I see any noticeable changes by doing so or are the effects simply behind the scenes.
Wiping cache and dalvik cache just helps with the flashing of your new kernel or rom. Its the proper way to flash. I mean some people don't. I usually do and my flashes never give me much problems.

I have never wiped when coming from an older CM version. It is not necessary at all.

[Q] Camera flash not working with Synergy RC1

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I tried searching multiple times and couldn't find anything about this. I just recently flashed my phone following the directions from the developer and the only major issue that I know of is the camera flash will not work when taking a picture in low light. I also tried the "flashlight" app and that also won't turn on the light either. Before I try re-flashing the ROM, is there anything I can try before? Thanks for the help...
I can assure you that it is NOT the rom, unless, of course, you have a corrupt download. My camera flashes like it is suppose to and my flashlight turns on and i am currently using the Synergy RC-1 rom. You can try rebooting into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik and then re-flash Synergy atop your current install.

Thanks for your help. I hate to re-flash after configuring the layout the way I like but if that's what it takes then I'll do that.

If you're going to reflash the same Synergy rom then go into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik and then make a nandroid backup of only your data as well as android.secure & sdext partitions. (If you do not have any apps saved on the android.secure [usually paid apps] and/or the sdext partition then disregard including them in the backup). Afterwards, flash the Synergy rom, boot to your homescreen, and then clear all of the default widgets from your homescreens. When you're finished, reboot into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik then restore the backup that you made of your data, android.secure & sdext, if applicable. Whe the restore it complete, boot to your homescreen. You will find them as they were in the previous installation of the rom.

Updating a ROM!

Here's a quick and easy question.
If I were to update my ROM to the latest version Cyanogen, how would I do that in Clockwork? Is it just choose zip from SD card? (I'm already on CM7 so there's no need to wipe)
Thanks,
Upgrading from earlier version of CyanogenMod 7?
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Flash CyanogenMod (your Google Apps will be backed up & restored automatically).

Hmm, my phone seems to freeze once all of my apps have loaded. I may end up doing a wipe.
you can not do anything wrong when you wipe it so...
there is always a chance to brick a phone, but you know what I mean.

[Q] Updating from Carbon 0.5 to 0.6

I noticed a similar thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007614
Basically, I have a HTC desire gma, s-off, 4ext recovery, 16gb microssd with two partitions - one of which has 1.5 gb ext4 space for a2sd.
It is running carbon rom 0.5, and as the system is relatively stable, I have committed to using it daily.
Carbon rom 0.6 has now popped up, and I wanted some advice regarding the upgrade process as I have previously only done full wipes before flashing a rom.
Thanks in advance
To dirty flash a ROM, you simply flash it over top the older version that you are current running. Then wipe cache and dalvik. Note that dirty flashing won't always work, and doing it may introduce bugs that wouldn't exist if you clean installed.

If you are switching roms:
- nandroid backup
- full wipe ('wipe all partitions except sdcard' within 4ext)
- flash ROM
If you are upgrading the same ROM:
- nandroid backup
- flash ROM
- wiping cache and dalvik is optional, I've never done it and never have any problems. If you wipe these, dalvik simply rebuilds, and booting will just take a LOT longer...there's an option within titanium backup: "clean up the dalvik cache" which is much quicker.
In both cases I always recommend nandroid backup just in case you had a bad download and/or something goes wrong.
This way you always have a safe point to restore to.
Wonderful! Thanks for the help - responses are perfect
