Costco charger works
I bought my vibrant at Costco and it came with some accessories, tested the car charger, it works.
Buy a cigarette USB adapter. Buy a micro USB Galaxy S cable. Connect the two. That way it works AND is more versatile than just being stuck for that specific phone/purpose.
I bought a Griffin dual USB adapter and a cable from amazon. Both were ~15. The Griffin has 2 USB ports so I can use the other for something else. Even if both are plugged in, it still charges the phone, even under intense GPS usage.

Confirmed.
Free Costco charger does work.
Widget reading of 1050
Bought the cheap $12 walmart charger for wifes Slide and it seems to work just fine for me.
I use the "official" T-mobile car charger I got for my Cliq. It works but charges the phone really slow. I plug it in on the way to work, about 20 mins, and it only charges it about 3% to 5%.
Before you write off a charger, use the hack in this thread to kick the phone into high rate charge mode.
Griffin PowerJolt Dual Universal
Works. No problems.

It shouldn't. The hack is a HW one that shorts the data pins so the cable looks like a charging cable the current goes from 400 mA to 600 mA. Well within the supported range. The phone limits the current to ~600mA.

Agreed. The only reason there is a limit of 400mA is so you don't draw too much power from your USB and harm your computer. If you use a wall charger, it would charge at the full 600mA & all this is doing is making it so it doesn't get registered as a PC USB device.
bought a $6 one from frys but while it would charge the phones temp. would go up by 30 degrees and became super hot to the touch, needless to say I never used it again. It works great on my sons Ipod Touch though.
as I just posted a bunch of info here:

But this works:

Status: Dedicated charger, not USB device, which is good because...
Widget reading: 1100mah
Basically we need any 1amp charger that is detected as a charger (rather than a USB device) and our phones will pull its max charge of about 1100mah (according to the widget)
If you already have a charger that is detected as a USB device, you can short the data pins (2 middle contacts, use a tiny piece of foil if you want =D) in your USB cable and it will then be detected as a charging device and pull the 1100mah.
I would love it if we could compile a list of chargers (wall chargers, car chargers, and USB chargers) that are detected as car chargers out-of-the-box.
I picked up a Rocketfish flush mount USB car charger. I hate Bestbuy, but was in a pinch and needed one. It works great and I can still close the ash tray cover on my VW.

Unfortunately it does show up as a USB device.

ah too bad, if the thing opens up easily, it might be fairly easy to connect the data pins (inside two pins of the 4 pins in the usb connect) and "convert it" to a dedicated charger.
Baught some cheap charger off ebay for like 5 bucks, made in china, looks like it should cost about 25 cents to make, doesn't work. Charges for 2 mins, then stops charging, then starts again, then stops, then starts then stops, just loops.
Used the costco charger, came with the phone, works good so far. But phone gets warm charging.
Also have a 40 dollar charger, works the best, no problems with it.
Posted this in another thread but this might be more appropriate:
Just use this charger by Samsung it is compatible with all Galaxy S phones according to Samsung and it is cheap $6.69! The widget shows and output of 1095 and these chargers support the Samsung rapid charging. Doesn't trigger the USB connection.

Also I found that some of the micro sd data cables will not mount.
Here is a compatible Samsung Branded micro sd data cable that does work with Mac OS and Windows $2.35!

I'd bet the Captivate will only see it as USB port and never draw more than 500mA from it. You can check which mode your phone is charging in the settings.

Settings->About Phone->Battery status (first one on the list... when plugged in to the AC adapter that came with the phone it will say Charing (AC) under it)
I got a $3 AC car charger ("For blackberry" but thy're both just microusb) off dealextreme. The connector is a little tight but it works great and charges fast
I've found that my Zune HD FM Transmitter charges well too. Has a USB port on it. Not a cheap alternative, but it's multi-functional and it works. Think the Captivate recognizes anything to charge as long as it gives power...
I'm sure it will charge, but at only 500mA, will be pretty slow (especially if you're using while charging).
I use an old crackberry charger (has usb port on it). 500mA output. Charges phone fine. Just not as fast as the samsung 700ma charger.

I haven't tried the car charger, but the AC outlet->USB works great
I purchased the $1.16 car charger from Monoprice.com, and it works great. Unfortunately, board rules don't allow me to post a link. Just search for "car charger" on Monoprice, and it's the first one that comes up. Or, search for the product ID: 3523.
The only problem is that, while the label lists a maximum output of 1A, the Captivate only draws 500 mA from it (USB mode), as is the case with the other chargers listed in this thread. I have not found the lower charging current to be a problem.
For $1.16... It's a steal.
I also purchased two micro USB cables from the same site, the ones with ferrites, but I had to mod the plastic heads with a Dremel to get them to fit the angled port opening. They fit and work perfectly now, though.
Even with the stock 700ma wall charger, it takes almost 4 hours to completely charge the battery. A 500ma charger (most iPhone ones and generic USB ones) will take even longer. This of course assumes you're not using the phone for anything. If you're using the phone for navigation, for example, your 500ma charger will not have enough juice for the phone and the battery level will continue to drop. So, it is important to have the car charger that can supply more than 500ma to the phone.
Currently, I know the Zune HD premium car charger can be recognizd as AC charger and seems supply more than 700ma of juice. And I read some Moto mini-USB car charger (no USB port on the charger) can be used as rapid charger as well.
I've tried two different cheap USB port car charger, one labeled 2.1a and the other is 700ma. Both are designed for iPhone/iPod and hence can only be recognized as USB charger.
If anyone found any small USB port car charger that can be recognized by the phone as AC charger, please post here.
I've heard good things about the Scosche Revive charger. I saw it in a car charger thread on the Android Forums. A guy bought it for his Evo and said it charged nicely with everything running (GPS, 4G, Navigation, et cetera). Here's a link to his post reviewing it. There's also the Revive II which has a 2.1A port and a 1A port.

Thanks for the link. The big question is: Can Captivate regconize it as rapid charger instead of USB? Just because it works with Evo (HTC phone) doesn't mean it will work the same for Captivate. And I suspect the Revive II won't work well for Captivate at all because it is designed for iPhone/iPad.

I can't say how it'll work with the Captivate, but they were having the same problem with their phones (700mA chargers only outputting 500mA). So, I'd have to say there is a good chance it would work. I'd test it out myself, but I really don't need a car charger. My work commute is 10 minutes round trip, school is 20 minutes.
Anyone come across a good combination charger/mp3 adapter?

I've noticed that plugging into various USB wall chargers won't work. The only one that will work is the one that came with the tab. I am pretty sure this is because the Samsung one is a 2amp charger and all of my others are less than 1amp, 850mah specifically. If you can find a 2amp car charger then it should work fine. Otherwise, the charging indicator will show that it's connected to a charger but will have a red x on in it meaning that it's not charging or can't charge. I suppose anything too low can't charge the battery fast enough to make up for the battery drain

I bought this one from deal extreme. Its less than $3.95 with free shipping. Comes with 2 usb ports. I have been charging my iPad and Dell Streak tablet without any problem. Yes it does charge 2 devices at same time. Its also small, doesn't get hot, doesn't make any noise and looks good. Highly recommended.

So if l'm using it to watch videos and music while on wifi, do you think that it'll maintain its charge while trickle charging?

i don't think the amount coming in will equal the amount discharged. depends on the brightness of the screen and how much cpu you're using. mine was charging veeeerrry slowly while reading the steps to root and the screen on, other than that it was idle and still slowly charged.

I also bought this. Arrived in 3 weeks from China, but free shipping, or $0.01.
They seem very good. There is some hard to read text (even in English) on the plastic part that tells you the top port is for iPad (2.1A) and the bottom is for others (1A). I've put a photo below of the guts. Seems it's definitely more than just some cheap resistors and a fuse.
I tried it in my vehicle and you still get the red X with a OEM cable with the device powered on, but NOT if you use an adapter plug found on eBay.
Do yourself a favor and order 3-4 of each. =)

Nope - you need a 2A charger, but any old 2A charger won't do. Most are designed for the iPad, which uses resistive voltage dividers in the charger to signal the presence of a dumb charger. Specifically the iPad looks for 2.0 volts on one of the data pins and 2.8 on the other.
The Tab expects D+ and D- to be shorted together and somewhere around 1.2-1.24 volts.
It IS possible to make iPad chargers (confirmed on Scosche reVIVE II) work as follows:
Bridge D+ and D- with a solder blob.
Remove the resistor that was the upper part of the 2.8v voltage divider (i.e. between the data pin and +5v).
At this point the charger should output around 1.2 volts on D+ and D-.
Hey Everyone,
Thought I would start a car charger thread.
I picked up one of these at Walmart the other day:
http://store.griffintechnology.com/smartphone/powerjolt-dual-universal-micro
And it works quite wonderfully. It's tiny, and even with bluetooth/GPS/Navigation running, it was slowly charging the battery. And it charges it quite quick if you don't have nav running.
It can be a bit annoying to pull out once stuck in, although you probably don't need to do that very often.

what is the exact output of each USB of this Griffen car charger ?
i have a JABRA charger (comes with JABRA Cruiser) and it doesnt seem to charge my GN while GPS navigation is on (even though its saying charging on the battery icon)
it used to work perfectly on my HTC Desire HD (with GPS+Bluetooth+WIFI ON )
any recommendation on how to fix this please ? like a reference output current that is enough to charge the GN while navigating ?
thanks.

The Griffen claims 1A per USB port, and I believe it.
Online reviews say some users with other phones need to mod the Griffen to charge their phone, otherwise it only supplies 100mA. Some crack open/mod the Griffen to short two terminals to get the full charging ability, and/or use a 'charging cable' which shorts the terminals within the cable.
As a reminder, the Griffen seems to charge the Note full blast, but perhaps something similar is needed for the Jabra. I suggest installing 'Currentwidget' to see what sort of charge you are getting.

At first it seemed the phone was only drawing a "USB" level of current, so I was all set to rip it apart and solder the centre pins to force AC charging, but when I double checked with a dry run and a temporary short the phone switched to AC charging. Now it seems to be continuing to draw "AC" levels, so maybe I had a poor contact initially and a few (un)plugging operations have made the contacts more reliable. I'll try it out later today with satnav running and see if it keeps up with the pace and report back.
EDIT : Charge level draining like water out of a sieve with this thing whilst running satnav, and the phone said it was "AC" charging too. Switching ports didn't help.

Quite a few of the cheaper car chargers simply do not have a point soldered on their boards, causing the phone to think it's charging from a 500mA USB port (like you'd find on a computer) and not go above that even if the charger does 1A/port.
I know even the belkin one has a forum topic somewhere regarding modifying it so that it'll always get detected as an AC power. I believe custom ROM's and kernels has a Fast Charge feature that can fix this too (ie force the device to detect the power as AC), I think.
I use the Motorola charger as well, and it works just fine... I had two lying around, one came with my Milestone and the other came with my Milestone Car Dock that I've bought separately...

First, this Motorola charger is good up to 2A, while the original Galaxy Nexus Wall Charger is good up to 1A, and Galaxy Nexus recognizes it as AC Charging, meaning that phone is draining as much current to charge as it can...
Second, I do not believe that those pogo pins are good to move 1A, and I could bet the farm (if I had one ) that it won't go over 1A for sure, so, I do not believe that the official car dock will allow more current than what this Motorola charger is already providing...
But, anyway, I doubt that charger is the one to blame, and I will tell you why... Battery is rated 6.8W/h and it usually allows up to 4 hours of screen on time... So, quick math, phone in use, screen on, is draining 1,7W/h and USB charging (500mA x 5V) gives you 2,5W/h, AC charging gives you 5W/h....
Lets say that you get up to 3 hours screen time with GPS on... It still is 2,27W/h... Below 2,5W/h USB charging limit...
So what is going on? Probably battery is too hot charging and being discharged at the same time (and probably the phone is not able to use the battery like a no-break and get its power from USB, so, phone is getting juice from battery and battery from charger) and phone will stop charging to avoid battery damage/explosion due to high temperatures, and also, battery efficiency is lower when battery is hot (it will drain faster)...
My guess is that if phone is still draining with a charger, in this case, check if it is too hot, and if it is, try to move it so it is cooled by car A/C / vent... At least, with milestone, it helps a lot, since I still own my Milestone and its gps is leaps and bounds better than Galaxy Nexus GPS, I've never really used Galaxy Nexus to navigate (yes, my Milestone turned into a dedicated Google Maps GPS )
its very easy to mod any usb charger to turn it into a AC charger. what you need to do is connect the two data pins.

just connect pins 2 and 3 by solder, i've done this on a few car chargers and it works great always shows AC. i didnt modify the usb wire itself but opened up the charger and connect the solder points connected to the data lines, not sure if you can just mod the usb wire. i have 600mah car charger that i did this to, before it wasnt enough to charge the phone with google maps running now it can charge it very slowly.
Just a update,
i purchased the motorola charger and been working great for nearly a month till this couples of days.
the only way that charge is by holding and pushing up the micro port wile inserted in the phone.
i noticed that the charger micro plug does have clips on only one side ,the other side is flat.
does that mean is not a original charger???
thanx
I'm currently using this cables
http://ca.startech.com/Cables/USB-2...USB-Cable-A-to-Left-Angle-Micro-B~UUSBHAUB3LA
with this charger:

No issues. the USB cable is very thine, so hides well on the dashboard.

generally can be had for about 3 bucks shipped. works fantastic - the phone reports as being plugged in and charges accordingly.
Hi guys, anyone could recommend a good car charger for this HTC One. I am running an app called Autoguard which records my trip. I manually activate car mode and this app but I realised my current car charger is not able to charge the phone quick enough despite a 2A rating with BT and this app running. It drains about 10% on a half hour journey! I have also did a little mod on my USB cable to short pin 2 & 3 but don't seems to work. I also read about charging modes (AC or USB) which the latter charged slowing whereas AC gives the full charging potential. I confirmed my current charger charged in USB mode. Any thoughts?
Seems like nobody has this problem!
I personally use the Motorola Rapid rate charger from Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000S5Q9CA/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1367933488&sr=8-2&pi=SL75
It works for me and does a great job.. I've had it for quite some time. My Galaxy Nexus on Verizon while using LTE was using more output than input while I was charging with a no name charger before so I decided to give this a shot and it worked. It charged and the percentage went up instead of trickling slowly with the no name charger..
I used it now with my H1 and it charges pretty quickly

Thanks HYE_Tech, this is useful information!
I just use a two port 2.1 volt dual usb charger and just plug a regular micro usb cable there

I find the HTC branded car charger works well

But what would make the difference between charging the One ore not while navigating?
I have a mini charger with an output of 1A, but still the phone in draining while navigating. Could this be the same issue as with the Galaxy S2, that it depends on the usb pin layout whether the phone charges with 500mA or 1A? And if so, isn't there a usb cable which already has the correct pin layout to charge to phone with 1A?

The One doesn't seem to change charging rates based on the USB pin layout-- I have several chargers and cables with shorted data cables and none of them seem to charge the device at higher than 500ma. It's definitely the phone itself that's not drawing more. I think that, either via software or hardware, the phone is checking the wattage available and if it is below 5Vdc/2A, it only draws 500ma. I just ordered a DC adapter that claims to be rated at 5Vdc/2A, and it should be delivered tomorrow.
Well in my car the charger is a 2.1A charger so that should not be the problem.
Not shure what the voltage output is.
I shortened the middle pins, but indeed, without succes.
Where did you order your charger? Can you let me know if it's working? If the phone sees it as a AC charger?
edit:
I have this one: http://www.bol.com/nl/p/hama-ipad-p...8284/?Referrer=ADVNLBES0020159005000010898284 (sorry it's in dutch). So it should be a 5V charger but still no effect...

This is the one I ordered:
Kinivo CX420 Two Port USB Car charger - for all smartphones and tablets (4.2 Amp / 20W)
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009TBF7IG/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_us?ie=UTF8
If this one doesn't work, I'm just going to permanently mount a 150W inverter and start using AC adapters. All of the 2.1a adapters show as charging via AC, but it still tops out at 500ma.
edit: i've been posting all over these forums with the same stuff... here's a link to whatever thread I just responded to with the most current information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41797839&postcount=6
I doubt if that will work. The output of the AC charger is only 1A and 5V, so there is something else why the phone thinks it's on an AC or USB charger. Still haven't found out what though
I just took apart an AC charger, and guess what, the two middle pins are shortened:
So what else tells the phone it's on an AC charger or USB charger???

I really think it's just down to output wattage, and nothing more. I have plenty of chargers with the middle pins shorted, and even though the phone says it's charging on AC, it only draws 500ma. That charger I linked my last post has been actually charging my phone while it's in use, pretty nearly 100% of the time. It does dip from time to time, but I've noticed that the AC adapter does too.
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I've seen some conflicting posts. Should I be getting a 2a car charger? I'm not sure what my current one is rated at as I haven't checked, but today in car mode and with bluetooth connected it was draining instead of charging and I'd like to fix that. I need a 2 usb port charger and I know most of those are not actually 2a per port, any suggestions? Is 2a what I need?
Thanks,
Tim
Unless you're using custom kernels, I believe the htc one is limited to 1a charging

I've used this exact same charger for some time now w/o issue on several phone types. I bought it based off it's many positive reviews and it has lived up to it's reputation.
I got my HTC One car kit,by HTC,its just perfect ,its made just like htc one- awesome build quality .Brings on car mode automatically just by sliding in the One.:good:
