Trouble with qik? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to use qik and can only get it to work with when I am calling an Evo device. Any one got any tips or advice?

I did get it to work between mine and my wife's Epic we were both on 4g at the time audio worked on first connect then we got disconnected second attempt we couldn't hear each other. Video was perfect pretty high quality the audio was not perfect though. I will use it but not often. I want Adobe Air video calling app now that should work better only time will tell when we get it.

A friend of mine also has the epic and we figured out that the recipient needs to press a mic button underneath the video feed to be able to speak. We got it to work while we were both on 3g.

While we're talking about Qik, do both parties need to have the app open, front and center in order to receive a call? Without even starting the app, there's a Qik service which I would imagine lets people without it open know they're being called.

Download FRING it works 100% better as long as your 3g service is running...

fring and what?
since fring disabled the skype connection, what are you logged in under to video call? ive tryed everything i could find on here to call from epic to iphone, or at least to a pc, nothing works!

qik works great on evo n 3g but dies on epic in 3g due to epics having 1./3 the up speed of evo in 3g. so if you are in 3g don't bother til the epic 3g speed bug is fixed

Fring itself. You're not using skype to do the video... you need the other person's skype account

+1 for Fring
I think QIK is great app for video sharing, but absolutely awful for video chat.
For starters, why does it distort the video to fill the screen? It makes everything look horrible. When I do get it working, it works so poorly with tons of distortion, and the audio doesn't work for crud.
Now Fring on the other hand, it's not the best quality, but it works. If you're on 3G audio drops like crazy, so it's best to do it on 4g or Wifi.

My trouble with Qik? The fact that their icon is noticably larger than all other icons. Pisses me right off.

[Q] Video Chat apps

I'm having terrible luck finding a video chat app that works. Mostly from my Inc2 to an iPhone 4. The issues seem to be on my end.
Tango only has one sided audio, i can hear her, she can't hear me. Video works fine.
Qik just kicks off for me, hers keeps working and mine loses connection after a 5 second duration.
Haven't found a skype with video chat yet or i just haven't looked good enough.
Anybody found anything that has worked? I checked out fring but the video quality was horrible.

Video chat apps

I did some testing of video chat apps today with some fairly unfortunate results. Here they are:
1) Skype
--Video: Excellent
--Audio: Excellent, but some cases of no audio when making phone to phone calls.
--Bluetooth headset support: Yes
2) Qik from TMO
--Video: Very good
--Audio: Very good
--Bluetooth headset support: No
3) Yahoo Messenger
--Video: Very good
--Audio: Excellent
--Bluetooth headset support: No
4) OoVoo
--Video: Not tested yet on SGS2, but generally gave me problems on EVO 4G.
--Audio: Not tested yet on SGS2, but generally gave me problems on EVO 4G.
--Bluetooth headset support: No
5) Tango
--Video: Not tested yet on SGS2, but worked fine on EVO 4G.
--Audio: Not tested yet on SGS2, but worked fine on EVO 4G.
--Bluetooth headset support: No
I really don't like video chatting in public or work with the speaker phone blasting to everyone around. So having some kind of headset support is required for me. But it seems like only Skype has it, but neither of us have been able to hear audio on Skype calls on the SGS2. Has anyone gotten it working? or do you know of another video chat app that works on the SGS2 and has BT headset support?
Skype works great for me, it's actually the only one that I can actually have a conversation with, I've tried everything else Tango, Qik, Fring etc and they all cut out I can't ever hold an actual conversation, Skype is awesome I can hear them perfectly and there's almost zero delay!
Skype works fine with me....high quality video n audio.
Tmo Galaxy S2
I tested tango and skype and working very good but my personal opinion tango work much better in my samsung hercules
In my experience so far Skype is working best stock and rooted.

Honestly all we need is the video capability on the phone apk like the international version without the need of an app. If anyone got that working that would be the first time ill donate... Lol

Its not really any different than using an app. Its just the phone software is integrating with an application. No different then who the mytouch 4g had integration with qik video calling. It doesn't really mean its going to work better or worst than before. We just need the developers to make their apps more universal and better programmed for video chat.

I tried some more Skype calls. I had extremely good success from my phone to Skype on the PC. Even internationally. The person I called remarked how great the FFC video looked (better than my PC webcam).
The sound was very good on both sides when using my Samsung included wired headset. The noise canceling on Skype with the loud speaker used for audio was also quite good! I think that it gets worse with a slower connection though.
I need to try some more Skype phone to phone calls with Bluetooth over 4G to see if I can figure out what the problem was the other day.

Skype on the Nexus?

Since all you UKers have the Nexus now, how well does Skype perform on it?.. not just for Skype-to-Skype calls, but for calling phones(landlines, etc).
It was complete rubbish on the Thunderbolt whereas on the Rezound its almost as good as a normal call.
Skype sound quality is just fine. But then, Skype sound quality will be dependent on your connection, not the specs of the phone.
do video calls work yet?
nope, unfortunately not

[Q] No outbound ooVoo video and my Skype Video is turned 90 degrees

I have an Inc 2 running Magnolia 2.1 Beta 4. My wife just got a new iPhone 4S. I was trying out various video calling apps.
I found an app for the iPhone that works with Google Talk video chat. I have Talk on mine. We can do a video chat with that combo.
If we try Skype, the camera on my phone turns the app 90 degrees. It wants to run in landscape mode. That isn't all bad except the self pic insert of myself doesn't rotate to match up with the incoming video.
I have also tried ooVoo. I can't get any video out of my phone with ooVoo. The inset self video is only my profile pic. It doesn't transmit the pic or any video.
Any thoughts?
Have you tried a different ROM? I've had similar results as you with my camera in some ROMs and when I switched over tovirtuous affinity 1.48 no problems. My fiancé has a 4s and we use Skype without any video issues.

On a previous ROM I couldn't get any video to go out with Skype. At least I got something with this one. I'm quite happy with the ROM I'm using now. I wouldn't dump it over this issue. I tried Virtuous a couple of weeks ago and found it lagged too much.
I've only done it with google talk with video. Sorry.

Wifi calling

So coming from tmo phones with wifi calling, would you guys recommend google voice or similar apps to have a similar results? I am at school like two days out of the week and the lab building is deadly to phone reception meabing i always switch to wifi calling.
You can't use Google Voice to make native VoIP calls. Its intended to only work as a call forwarding service.
You have to use another 3rd party app VoIP solution like some kinda SIP combination or an app like GrooVe IP or Talkatone. The latter apps just effectively take your GV# and make calls via the "Google Chat" protocol usually saved for making calls in GMail on a computer.
The quality and consistency won't be anywhere near what T-Mobile's built-in WiFi calling app offers though. It's pretty hit or miss with these apps but its better than nothing I guess. If all you need is SMS, then you could simply use the Google Voice app over WiFi.
And before you ask, no, T-Mobile WiFi calling app probably won't be coming to the Galaxy Nexus. It would require T-Mo and Kineto to build a custom app for it.
Thanks. Ill try a few and see which work the best. Its only a few days oit of the week otherwise i have pretty good reception out here.

If its just short calls and your university(?) has good WiFi like mine does, you should be able to make calls in a pinch.
Yeah my school has wifi. My issue is that im using my wifes sgs 2 because it has wifi calling. She got me the nexus but ive only set it up and installed aopk and franco kernel. Its an awesome phone just wanted to see what othrr optionsbi had.
I have switched to GrooveIP with my Google Voice number. I am almost at 2 months with my GN using no minutes! I wrote an article about this and I am still running. I have had almost no issues this way. Now I do use GrooveIP across 4G too but you don't have turn that option on. I use this on my wifi only Tab to get and make calls. I call people at Starbuck and talk for free.
