Undervolt and underclock?... - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are they the same thing?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

no....underclock means to lower the clockspeed (from 1ghz to 900 mhz fkr example) and undervolt means to lower the voltage being delivered to the cpu at a given clockspeed.....you as the user can freely undervolt using setcpu but the kernel chef is the only one who can undervolt a kernel

Thanks!
Ok, 4 questions:
1)Does undervolting slightly affect the performance of the phone? If so, in what way?
2) Which kernel is better on the battery? Kingclick, our hydra kernel?
3) does it make sense to overclock slightly on an undervolted kernel.
4) which roms are most compatible with each kernel if there is a compatibility issue?

1. undervolting improves battery
2. hydra is better on principle
3. overclocking is never necessary....overclocking isnt needed at 1ghz, but if you insist in overclock, 1.113 ghz is good....or 1.15 but i wouldnylt reccommend 1.2
4. all sense roms work with custom kernels

So if I have a stock rooted 2.2 Incredible and just want to save some battery, can I just drop a kernel in place and it will "just work" ? I have SetCPU lowering the clock when screen is off, would this be better?
thanks!

If I was you, I would flash your kernel of choice (mine is hydra ssuv v0.5) and definitely lower the screen off profile....and use a good Rom too...speed isn't always in the kernel you use, its in the Rom too...that's why I don't overlook....
And also, unpack and quadrant are just bragging rites, nothing more nothing less

Cm7 and over clocking

So I have a quick question for people running cm7. I am running cm7 with aveon 6 kernal. I was just wondering what over clock speeds do you guys use?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using XDA App
Dl no frills CPU and test for yoursef, each phone runs defferently and with no frills u can set as boot but if it is not a proper shutdown it will not set just in case it was due to the oc/ UV. Hope this helps and I run 1.5 ghz
Tap'n on miui incredible 2
Plus one on NoFrills. I'm using Aeroevans .7bfs kernel set at 1.2ghz and using the Sio I/O on nightly 133. This works well for me. Good balance of speed and battery life.

OCing over 1.2 is useless unless you want battery to die fast
Running tiamat 1ghz gives me 30hrs on moderate
1.2 about lil more than a day
Tiamat is supposedly come out with new kernel this weekend or next.

With cm7 I actually like to underclock to around 800 with interactiveX. I have hit 1.9 stable using the smooth ass governor, and when I want to over clock I usually go for 1.2 or 1.4

Kernel options?

Currently running Skyraider 1.0, and drellisdee's Sense kernel #21 limited to 1.5ghz, as it seems to be the only OC kernel I can find for a sense Rom.
Are there others that I haven't found? Looking for maybe a little less OC with the slot freqs/voltages a little closer together. Suggestions/ links to others appreciated.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
You can definitely put it lower than 1.5 GHz. You must not be doing something right. What app are using to oc?
You should also update to skyraider 1.3
Also this belongs in the Q&A section. Mods please move.

Let me clarify. Sorry. Running the 1.3 Rom (stupid brain), and I'm the limiter of the OC on the kernel, using SetCPU. Looking for different kernel options that might give me more useful slots below 1.5ghz.
Not really a Q&A... Looking for general suggestions on different kernels to try.

Sent from my Incredible 2 HD using Forum Runner
i'm assuming you mean something like 1000mhz, 800mhz, 768mhz, 600, etc?
as in less of a break between the freq once you go below 700?
I dont know of any sense kernels with that option, there's dres' kernels and i think corecore (spelling?) has a sense kernel on rootzwiki, but i havent tried it

Kernel that is only undervolted but not overclocked?

Can someone post a link to a kernel that runs at the stock 1.5ghz but is undervolted? I don't care about performance. Just want the best battery life. Thanks!!

you can easily limit the CPU to not go over 1.5 or even 1.0
when i really want to save battery i keep CPU at 800 Mhz or 1.0 Ghz
Any of the kernels in the development section can be either under bolted or over clocked. I'm using synergy the way it comes out of the box and its great. Standby battery drain is unbelievable.

true, but i find it more effective than UV
yes, we can keep it at 1.5 Ghz with say -0.010v or something like that
it's just a minor hassle to tweak
you can open a Terminal in your phone and launch the command
some apps like the faux can let you control the voltage as well

[Q] What's the best GB aosp kernel for battery?

I'm having major battery drain with the latest CM7 stable release. I've lost 25% in standby in about 90 minutes....my phone was charged while off to 100% last night, and when I turned it on I left it alone....didn't even turn the screen on. when I came back an hour later it was at 78%
Can someone please recommend a good battery saving kernel, please....I'm pulling my hair out finding one. For such a popular phone the choices seems really sparse

I agree with this kernel. I use SBC as well, it will stop the 10% drop in battery whenever you unplug it.
Thanks for all the wonderful responses, everyone!! I'm giving mason a shot first, since it seems so popular
I'm trying Mason G - v0.14 sbc uc'd to 729mhz, powersave gov....but I can't find any options to uv/ov. Does set cpu not work properly with this kernel? What app/script should I be using?
for undervolt if it is sysfs HAVS enabled you need to get vipermod. If it just says undervolt then it may have a pre-set undervolt determined by the dev.

On GB is was running this same setup and my battery life was nothing short of amazing. I had a good 15-24 hours depending on use.
best cm7 kernel?
i just recently started using mason. its pretty awesome. before that i used tiamat sbc also no problems. just try which ever ones you think you may like every couple days to see which one works best for you. i also give the kernel about 10 minutes to bake in every time before i unlock it. i dont know if thats been proven to help but it cant hurt and seems to work well for me.
I've been running mason sbc for about a week now. I had to use a combination of vipermod and smurfed out scripts to get the kernel set where I wanted it. I noticed the kernel was set for BFS by default, which I've never been a big fan of, due to its power consumption....so smurfed out let me set the scheduler to CFS, which is much more conservative and doesn't sacrifice any i/o speed, imho. Then I used vipermod to uv -25MHz so it wasn't such a battery-hog. Underclocked, undervolted, and set to CFS seems to be my winning combo!!! I get no less than 3 hours of constant screen time (streaming video, browsing the web, etc.) and enough standby to last me all day so I don't have to carry my charger with me anymore.
With every other android I've ever owned, setcpu does everything I've mentioned changing in this post...so when it wasn't working, I had no idea what to do.
Thanks so much guys!!! I couldn't have done it without all your help....HTC is in a world all its own in the android scene since they use so many different things that no other manufacturers do. It made me want to pull my hair out until you guys came along to help me out

Best Kernel for Overclocking Galaxy Nexus

I'm thinking of flashing a different kernel to my Samsung Galaxy Nexus so I can overclock the CPU/GPU. I've noticed that franco.Kernel and Trinity seem to be among the most popular kernels, but I'm not sure which one to choose. In your opinion, what is the best kernel for overclocking and why? FWIW, I have the Verizon model of the phone (toro) and am currently running CyanongenMod 4.1.2, which is based off of Android 4.2.2.

Antutu or CF bench are good apps.. And a warning: overclocking will decrease the life of your phone! Be careful! If you want to use your phone a little longer I wouldn't do it (I wouldn't anyway because I think this phone is very fast especially with Android 4.3)..

Hi,
I've decided to bump this thread because all other GNex OC threads are very dated.
I recently received the extended battery 200mah and I'm ready to overclock. I wish to retain battery life to have screen time 3-4 hour on moderate usage.
I'm current rooted on stock ROM, and I wish to simply stay with stock ROM provided battery life will remain the same (perhaps I have to undervolt)
I want to hit 1.5GHz CPU and 384MHz GPU...which is what the OMAP and PowerVR SoC's true default clocks.
Given my circumstances of stock ROM, which kernel would give me the best stability/battery life? Any kernel that somehow has OC settings built in or do they all require me to buy setCPU?

I don't OC myself. I want my gnex to last some longer. OC will wear out tour CPU.. I die it once for a day maybe two but didn't notice any improvement. I was at 1.5 GHz or something.. I think it may have some speed improvements but your battery will drain like a maniac. If you don't game I suggest you underclock: even more battery life with no speed loss!!
