Yes, you can flash the RUU as many times as you need.

How to upgrade to 2.2 from rooted 2.1

Right now I am running stock everything just unrevoked rooted on 2.1
Basically I want to upgrade to stock 2.2 and I'll go from there as far as what rom I will actually use this time around -etc-.
But I kind of want to start off fresh just contacts, pics and rooted 2.2
From my understanding I cant just upgrade via the pop up on the phone to 2.2 can i?
Thanks

Yes, you can. So long as you didn't modify the essential programs. You'll lose root, but can gain it back with unrevoked.

If he currently has a custom recovery I think he will fail to do the OTA update. I know that you must have the stock recovery in order to go this method.
You could always just use the RUU program then run unrevoked 3.21 to gain root again. This will how ever erase everything you have the phone except for the SD card.
Yes the ota update didnt work.

You're going to have to use the RUU program or extract the rom.zip file from the RUU program to restore your phone. You can either RUU your phone back to stock 2.1 or you can just go 2.2. I would recommend going the 2.2 method as it saves you the hassle of waiting for the phone to download the OTA.
You should be able to find instructions on how to use the RUU throughout the forum or this section even. Just use the search button .
*most people including my self was unable to use the RUU program due to driver conflicts. The only way a lot of use was able to use the RUU was to extract the rom.zip file and then rename it to PB31IMG.zip and flash it via Hboot.*
Again do a search and you should find instructions.
Side note: Be careful during the hboot update process. It will either send you to recovery or to fastboot. If you get sent to fastboot just select "bootloader" and hit the power button. This will put you back into hboot and the update will continue on its own.
If sent to recovery just select reboot phone and then hold volume down right afterwords to make sure you get into hboot again.
Caution: Never pull the battery during hboot or radio flashing as you will be very sorry and have a nice paper weight to remind you to never do this again.

The 2.2 RUU is now the Stock Rom that comes with the phone. The only issue I see flashing the 2.2 RUU would be if he had upgraded his radio beyond what the RUU would have done.
Also technically yes you will void your warranty by using the RUU as it wont be considered an official update according to your carrier. Only OTA's are considered official.
Then again you already voided your warranty when you rooted the phone so it shouldn't really matter.
When I boot up it gets past the HTC quietly brilliant goes to the droid eye then after the 2 red balls go back and forth the second time the phone just sits and freezes there. what did I do wrong?
so i managed to get booted, but I boot and it shows me as having no service and plenty of my programs just freeze up and pop up saying force close or wait

Interesting. Where exactly did you get the ruu files? Also did you do anything while rooted with 2.1 like load custom rom's that could have required you to change anything beyond just flashing the rom?
I've never gone past stock when I was rooted but in one of my earlier threads when I joined this forum I decided to go back to unrooted as I needed my phone to work and didn't want to run the risk of it dieing on me due to a stupid mistake. *It's currently my only phone*
I've flashed the 2.2 ruu file twice now and had no issues what so ever.
Also did you pull your battery while waiting for the phone to boot up for the first time after flashing the RUU? If you did then this might explain why as the first boot always takes the longest as it's building caches I think and possibly doing settings and so forth.

New Ota Update

Hi guys
At the moment i've recieved an update which says the version code is: ota_btavo_htc_eu_2.10.405.2-2.09.405.8_release567cypyi0feo4th5.zip
My current version is froyo 2.2 now, should i let my phone to upgrade this update, or will it downgrade my phone?
My phone is also rooted, is there a problem about this?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Don't use it as it will mess the phone up...
So i think my guess is right, this update is for version 2.1 right?

No, it's the 2nd 2.2 patch...it updates 2.09.405.2 to 2.10.405.2
You just can't install it as you're rooted

Eddy, I'm quoting your post on the other thread for clarification..
If this is an OTA, why cant he update it via Recovery? Would it still mess up the system?
It CAN mess it up, it's never a good idea to flash a stock update on a rooted phone...read other posts (not just mine ) and you'll see other people say this

Understood..
I'm little bit confused right now, sorry for being a rookie but can you explain this a little : "You'll need to turn off signature checking in your Recovery and then flash the update.zip as you would any other OTA but yes it should go through"
What should i do now, unroot? if so how, or what's this update's benefit, if its not so necessary i can pass it..
thanks by the way
Easiest way - find a custom ROM based on that ROM version. Most Sense-based ROMs should be on it by now
Other option is to unroot using the 2.10.405.2 RUU, or the 2.29.405.2 RUU. Then root again should you want to but if you're just going to put a custom ROM back on then there's no point

Unable to root new 2.3 OTA Update?

I RUU'd my phone to stock so I could check out the new update. Trying to reroot using unrevoked and I am getting "failed to flash recovery image" I followed all the steps...
has anyone else been able to root this?
This what I kept telling people...don't do that. Unrevoked won't work on it because it hasn't been updated to work with the new OTA, though it should happen soon. You should have waited for the rooted rom, which would be out sometime today, Virus is already on it. For now, you're stuck.
Have you tried looking at the bootloader? Does it show s-off? I doubt it worked, but in the event it did, all you would have to do is flash a PC36IMG of a recovery in the bootloader.

RUUing to an older version of what you have could brick your phone. The new update has a new bootloader so you are pretty much screwed until somebody comes up with a way to root it.
If he was actually thinking properly it wouldn't matter. If he had S-Off then just flashed the Amon Ra in recovery then he will have Recovery Back and can Flash ANY ROM he Desires.
RUU'ing back to stock doesn't turn S-Off back to S-On
But if he Didn't i would advise Running the Old RUU then using unrevoked, then unrevoked forever but unrevoked3 has unrevoked forever built into it then you can update to the new rom and reflash amon ra or clockwork over to have recovery back then when a Odexed or DeOdexed rom comes out flash it

[Q] Re-Rooting Problem

I'm trying to root my brothers Evo again and running into some problems.
Back story: I had rooted his device with Revolutionary and he was running CM7 just fine. He started to have troubles with his screen so we unrooted it and got S-ON back. He took his phone to Sprint and instead of replacing the device, they decided to just replace the screen on it.
Current story: Downloaded Revolutionary and ran it and got this;
Code:
=============================================
| Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4 |
=============================================
Brought to you by AlphaRev & unrEVOked.
Waiting for device...
Found your device: PC36100 (supersonic-6.17.0001, Android: 2.3.3, ROM version: 4.53.651.1)
Your device is already S-OFF, what exactly do you think you're doing? Not setting S-OFF.
Do you want to download (Internet connection required) and flash ClockworkMod Recovery? [Y/ny
Downloading recovery for your phone (supersonic)...Done.
Rebooting to fastboot...
Flashing recovery over fastboot...INFOsignature checking...
FAILED. Unable to flash recovery. Please download custom recovery yourself and flash it over fastboot.
So here I am with the HBOOT saying that S-ON and Revolutionary telling me it's off and won't turn it off.
Not sure where to go from here!?
Thanks!
When it tells you that your Device is already S-OFF, you should have an option to turn it off regardless.
If that doesn't work, I guess you could try and use another method to do it.
and if THOSE don't work, I guess you could just sbf flash it it
I don't have an option to turn it off regardless.. it finds the device and logs the fact it thinks S-OFF is present and asks to download the recovery.
I thought revolutionary was the only option for HBOOT 1.6 at this point. Is this incorrect?
Also what do you mean by sbf flash it?

You didn't do the last step after getting S-ON, which is flashing a stock ROM. Because of your HBOOT version, Revolutionary thinks you're already S-OFF. You need to flash a stock ROM to normalize your HBOOT version, and then Revolutionary will work.
He cannot flash a stock ROM if he is S-ON. Sbf basically resets everything on your phone back to its "out of the box" state
@Druke, can you get to recovery? If there is no recovery you may want to RUU back to 4.54 then try revolutionary again. Or just go through the un-rooting steps again.

This is incorrect. You can flash a signed HTC stock ROM in PC36IMG format (or RUU on a PC for that matter) just fine. As I said, that's the last necessary step to returning the device to stock conditions. Trust me, I've done it probably almost 100 times.
P.S. Since I'm the one that came up with the unrooting method that was used, I would know .
I did try an RUU yes. I will need to try an RUU again. The one I used must have been unsigned or unofficial somehow. Anyone help me out? With the megaupload thing it seems all the links around here have dried up. Thanks!

The unrooting Revolutionary root link in my sig has links to some PC36IMG zips that can be flashed in bootloader.
I recommend the 4.54 version. Sometimes it won't work if you're using a version that's too old, or if your SD card isn't a high capacity card or got corrupted somehow.

4.54 RUU or PC36IMG is the most likely to work, however, 4.24 and 4.53 contain the same HBOOT needed for Revolutionary to work again as well.

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

The looping doesn't matter - you should still have adb access, unless you didn't follow the instructions exactly.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
