[Q] How to get rid of worthless built in apps? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This may seem like a stupid question, but ever since this recent update my phone has a lot of worthless app's running in the background I can't seem to delete. App's such as; My Verizon mobile, Skype mobile, city ID (still there), news, amazon MP3, ect..
Is there an easy way to get rid of a huge chunck of these considering I never use most of them?
Thank you

The best way I can advise is to root and then use the Virtuous rom in the development forum. It is as sweet as it gets.

If you're rooted you can also download Titanium Backup and uninstall with that.

you can also use ADB and remove the .apks from the app folder. I also use startup manager to handle which tasks are running upon boot that aren't necessary (fm radio, maps, stock mail/message)

Not sure about removing bloatware (I'd assume its similar to other Androids through adb, but I don't want to go poking around in mine yet to find out). As for Footprints, it's an app that allows you to geotag photos. Not sure why it is constantly running though, do you have any kind photo widget active as well?

You don't. The Evo has NAND protection and will restore them.
Why do people think Amazon MP3 is bloatware? For that matter, why do people think Peep is bloatware, when they just turn right around and install some other Twitter client?
It may not be YOUR cup of tea, but it works for plenty of people.
I know, I know... "I don't want it, therefore it must be bloatware, even though it's not taking up any space I could use for anything else."

Who cares why people think its bloatware..why do some people harass others when their opinion doesn't match their own?

To me it's bloatware because I don't use it and didn't ask for it. It's like having ask.com wanting to be installed with everything you download. I have no reason to use amazon mp3 and have zero use for twitter. But it's always running in the background. I need to set it to auto kill. If it wasn't there in the first place I wouldn't have to.

Nope I am running no widgets. But when I run task manager to see what is running it always shows as footprints running. Along with amazonmp3 peep and a couple other things that I am never using.
I don't mind if it's on the phone(so much space that it doesn't bother me), I mind that it's ALWAYS RUNNING.

I just checked on mine and you're right, I have Footprints and Stocks running in Task Manager. Not sure why they are coming up, maybe somebody else can chime in?
From what I can tell it doesn't use a lot of resources, so it may not be an issue aside from annoying you :/
i used RegawMOD toolbox for most of them and sdk for the rest

no smart guy... they think it is bloatware because it is on the phone and they cannot delete it, it typically starts up in the back ground and runs, taking up resources that their "preferred" twitter or whatever client could be using. but mostly simply because it comes preinstalled on the phone and cannot be uninstalled.

Wow, not bashing you.. just curious how you even found this thread. Last post before yours was on June 8th..
Were you searching for ways to remove bloat from your own phone?
If so did you find your answer? (the game has changed a bit since early June..)

They think it's bloatware because it's bloatware, as is anything that's not included with the OS or required for the Phone to function properly.

How to stop Amazon mp3 Store from starting when you receive a call?

Hi,
I'm new to Android and I see that every time I get a callthe Amazon mp3 Store and the Voice Dialler app have started. I haven't been able to find any settings in the apps themselves or the system settings to disable this. I can understand voice dialler starting with the phone app, but why in the world is the Amazon mp3 store linked to it? I'm hoping someone knows the mechanism by which one app causes another app to startup in Android.
If you use startup auditor you can select what you want to run at startup, but there is also a button to not let it run, even after startup. Are you on the stock rom? Go root and download one of the many good roms they have alot of the useless sprint crap taken out. (has ANYONE actually used the amazon store to buy an mp3? I mean, we have mp3 download on the market which is like a pirates wet dream) lol

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. I am on the stock ROM, but I'm still in the 30 day trial period and haven't decided if I will keep the Evo. I was able to tweak most settings to get a pretty good enough battery life that the stock ROM doesn't trouble me that much. I just needed a way to stop some of these programs from running. Besides, the voice dialler starting up problem would be there I'm assuming even with some of the tweaked ROMs since that's an Android component.
BTW do you know how exactly startup auditor works? What settings file does it alter to prevent this? Does anyone have a pointer to some Android OS docs on how exactly this starting up of processes automatically works? I hope startup auditor is not doing something silly like staying resident and then killing the processes you don't want?

Okay Startup Auditor isn't quite as good as I thought. It seems to work mostly but I still see the Amazon mp3 store starting up sometimes. It's really irritating. I'm glad I didn't decide to purchase the app right away and waited for some time. I'll try mailing the deveoper and see if he can do something.
By the way in case folks are interested, the way it seems to work is by intercepting the Android OS events for various things like new call, new messages etc. I guess it then somehow doesn't pass these events to the apps you don't want. I'll need to hit up some Android developer docs to read up on its event system.

[Q] Remove System Apps??

hey guys i rooted my phone a few weeks back and now an running synergy sense 3.0.
how do i go about deleting the system apps or stock apps that phone will not simply let u uninstall is there an app to do that or do i have to go through the phone hardware itself??
View attachment SdxAppRemoval-1.5.apk
i use this
be careful you can delete important stuff, use caution. back up first!!
I use Titanium Backup to remove system apps.
It has the capability to "freeze" them without actually removing them. This is helpful when you don't really want to get rid of it permanently but just want to stop it from running on its own.
It also allows you to be sure that no problems will be caused by removing the app. If something else depends on it and you start getting force closes you can thaw the app to recover it.
Once you are sure that you want to be rid of it forever you can remove it completely.
off the top your head do u know what all can be removed without messing up pone?
+1 for using Titanium Backup to remove system apps.

At one time I saw someone here trying to build a comprehensive list. Definitely can remove the 'bloat' like Amazon MP3, NASCAR, NFL, Kindle, Nova, Sprint Navigation, and the other Sprint apps.
Things that get you into trouble are things that are integrated into Android (like Google Talk) or HTC Sense.

This is the list I was thinking of:

misfits MisfitROmV1.2 with ChopSuey kernel works really REALLY well for me and it dosent have almost all the stuff and you can download the stuff you want, (i just did youtube and maps) only downside is he aint around no more. still rom works great

[Q] Google Music 3.0.1 ?...

Have any of you Devs looked at this app? I already have a music player on my SII, so I figured I'd use Bloat Freezer to put it away, so to speak, in case I ever wanted it again. Turns out that BF doesn't see the app...
So, I went to Titanium Backup and was just going to remove it. Trouble is, TB can't remove it either. Says that it can't remove a system app. That kind of troubled me, mainly because I never installed this thing: it just showed up after the 2.3.6 update, and I can't figure out why a simple music player would be a system app.
The reason I'm a little worried about it is because it's constantly loaded in memory, regardless of how often I use Task Manager to Exit the app. And, after just finding out about CIQ and the System Manager 1.1 app, and getting rid of that, I'm leery of anything that runs without me starting it.
I might just be paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?
Thanks,
..Joe
did you enable Chuck Norris mode in Ti ?
i've never had an app that will not get removed or freezed by Ti
Yup. Rooted and SU'd after 2.3.6 using CWM and the SU in the Dev thread.
But I like "Chuck Norris Mode" better.

Bloat Freezer scans for and freezes individual apks. Titanium just loads android's list of apps of what it thinks is installed.
My guess? Sounds like the music app is really stored in another apk. Multiple apps can share an apk.
Based on my guess: bloat freezer sees the apk it is in(it scans the whole phone), but it probably has another name (could be part of google framework, or something else, who knows). Titanium sees it, but cannot freeze it because it would freeze too much other stuff.
I just got off the phone with Google support. Music 3.0.1 was part of the 2.3.6 update and cannot be completely removed from the phone as it is part of the system. In other words there is no .APK for it.
Google said they couldn't really help me with anything because my phone is rooted and they couldn't tell what ROM is on it. I offered to restore it back to the original ROM just to get rid of this thing, and that's when they told me there is really no way to do it- it's part of the system file.
To me, this is nothing more than spyware. I didn't ask for it, I don't want it, and it's not intrinsic to the operation of the phone. Android is an Open Handset Alliance package, so I don't really think Google has the right to force Bloatware down our throats.
For reasons I won't go into here, I will do anything to avoid having anything to do with Google.
So, I will still try to find a way to get rid of it. I saw one over on the

[Q] Removing Google Apps & Default Apps

I'm just wondering if removing some of the default that come pre installed google apps like gmail, playbook, play games ...or even the default calendar apps is going have any impact on the perfomance on the whole phone system or even the battery life.
It's kinda irritating to see apps that's in the app drawer that i dont use....plan to uninstall them off with titanium backup

if they aren't running and never run (in the foreground or background) they won't impact battery life. if they are running you could stop them or freeze them with titanium. the only other difference they make is cluttering up the app drawer and taking up space in the storage.

Removing them, if you never use them won't make any difference at all, you might as well use the "hide" feature in the app drawer.
Removing some LG apps might make a difference, as some of them run even if you never actually use them, but the google apps will only run if you actually open them.
On a side note, I never understand why people buy android phones (especially top of the line, flagship phones!) and then remove almost every trace of Google from them, isn't it kind of defeating the whole point?

That's the beauty of Android over iOS: you don't HAVE to use Google apps if you don't want to. Being able to uninstall any app should come by default on all ROMs.
I remember the big trial Microsoft has lost when it tried to force all users to use Internet Explorer in Windows. In Europe, they had to add it optionally, and provide way to remove it / download alternative software. Something similar might force Google to do the same in the future (and Apple, LG, Samsung, HTC, etc.)
As far as removing unnecessary core system apps, I've always used Root App Delete with no issues. It does require root but works perfectly to remove any unnecessary apps you don't want. Once I receive my G3 I plan on immediately rooting the phone and using Root App Delete to get rid of any bloat I don't want.
