Custom recovery image for i5800/01? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

In the default recovery the only option is restore factory settings by pressing home button.
I can't root the device, because I can't apply update.zip.

When I go into recovery mode on my GT-i5800 I have the option
"apply sdcard:update.zip"
but where do I get the correct update.zip? This is my first smartphone. I have it for only a few days and I don't want to make it unusable. Nevertheless I really need to root it, because it has the wrong time server configured. Unfortunately this causes my GPS not to work at all.
help anyone?

I just successfully rooted my i5800 using the root.zip from the oneclickrooter
referenced by xda-developers thread nr: "742403" (sorry the forum doesn't allow me to post a link)
With applying the right ntp server in /etc/gps.conf, I finally can see some satellites.

I can confirm that one click root for Samsung i9000 works on i5800 too
Ciao

That's the one I meant

The default i5801 software doesn't allow 'update.zip".

You need to download/flash cf-autoroot using Odin for root access.
Here is the download link: http://download.chainfire.eu/354/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hltetmo-hltetmo-smn900t.zip
This zip file also contains Odin, so just unzip all files to a new folder in windows and odin flash
the cf-autoroot TAR file, reboot the phone and your good to go.
Good luck!

Root achieved on CAT B15Q !!!

Root finally achieved on CAT B15Q.
I tried all the simple methods, none worked.
I used PDAnet USB drivers.
To achieve root, I made a recovery using the CWM method with SP Flash Tool V5.1408.00 following this guide
chinaphonearena.com/forum/Thread-Tutorial-Ultimate-no-root-backup-CWM-MT6582-MT6592-MT6589-MT6589T-MT6577-MT6595
Recovery was patched using MTK Droid tools. However, SP Flash Tool V5 would not flash the phone with the patched Recovery and Boot files, so for that I used SP Flash Tool V3.1332.0sn187. Then root using MTK Droid tools - Superuser (SuperSU failed). Also useful was this guide
chinaphonearena.com/forum/Thread-Tutorial-How-to-build-CWM-and-root-Bedove-X21-MTK6577-and-other-MTK-phones
Note: When plugging phone in for flashing (this is done with the phone OFF), put battery in, plug cable into phone, hold volume down button when you plug the USB cable into the computer.
Checking with a root checker, it told me I did not have full root access, even though Superuser appeared to be working, I only had temporary root.
I then used Root Genius, which finally achieved full root.
A bit of messing around, but worth it.
Install busybox.

Could you make a tutorial?
Yes, a detailed tutorial how to successful rooting a Cat B15Q would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried with towelroot, but app says phone is not compatible.
Newest chinese version from RootGenius is 1.9.6, but international version is only 1.8.7 from
march 2014. Has anybody tried successfully with one of the versions?

Roor genius didn't work for me. Left my phone in wierd state (screen flickering during call). Had to do factory reset after my root tries.
i hope this thread wont die, there isnt much information on the web on how to root the b15q.
has anyone found some good links, or some in any way useful info that they could post here?
i really hope this will turn out better than with the b15, where after half a year there was still nothing reliable

Can you tell us which version of RootGenius you used? Chinese 1.9.6, or older international version 1.8.7 from march 2014 ? Or another else?

It's an apk fille (in chinese). Just download, run, wait, reboot and voila... Root is there. At least i have it on my B15Q since morning. Root is persistent (still rooted after multiple reboots) and controlled by KingUser app that you will get preinstalled after running thar chinese apk. How much is it safe or not I have absolutely no clue nor guarantee. For me it works without any problems (so far).

Ok, so since you have clockwork recovery there is a few extra ways for you to actually root the tablet.
1.) You can find a flashable root .zip for samsung galaxy tab 3 4.4.2 (model number) however, I failed to find this on google or bing so you may have some troubles.
2.) Use odin. You have google so just search how to do i
3.) Use this different link. It may help. Teaches you how to root the tablet.
theunlockr(.)com/2014/02/17/root-samsung-galaxy-tab-3-7-0/(just remove the parenthesis around the period. I can't post links outside of xda since I am a newbie.)
Hope this helps.
edit: I just realized that you put your model number! XD sorry. But still, same steps apply

Hm. I think I see the problem. Did you use that stock rom one or did you flash a root? Either way you most likely flashed/odin the wrong OS/root for your tablet. Try again but make sure you use your right tablet. Or can you actually tell me what you did because I do not know what you did to fix it.

[Q] Help Needed for Newbie

Hi to all
I have the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 bronze non Wi-Fi. the Tab is rooted and now that I want to update firmware to lollipop it says that my Tab has been altered.
My question is do I need to unroot to get the new firmware and if so how do I do this. All help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Paul
Non WiFi? They're all WiFi. :what:
I take it you're trying to ota. You can update via kies (smart switch) or use odin. The firmware is available at sammobile or Samsung updates or if you're lucky a fast mirror maybe posted here.

Hi been away for a couple of weeks so first of all I would like to thank all that replied with suggestions.
Now I have downloaded the Lolipop file I have a couple of questions.
1) If I now update via Odin will this then make the tab unrooted again once the official Lollipop is loaded. The reason I ask this is because since rooting my device I cannot use my Sky Sports app or my Virgin Tv Anywhere app.
2) If the answer to question 1 is no, then how would I go about unrooting the Tab.
Thanks Paul
Yes, It will unroot your device.

You probably should have unrooted first as there will be some residual files in data. The sky sports app is quite clever at detecting root.
You probably just need to wipe data.

Sorry. Thanked you in your main post. I just realized I was using the wrong button combo. I tried again and flashed it with odin once more. Worked like charm. Great work, man and much obliged from someone who'd be at a loss to do this by himself. With this finally rooted I can get some privacy apps.
If you have an idea where I could get something to remove the knox or reset the counter that would be great. If not I'll keep lurking. Keep up the great work.

Ok. I understand. Sadly today the battery of this marvelous device failed. It isn't working at all unless plugged in and cannot hold a charge. Two weeks into buying it, if so life would have it. I want to flash back it's original rom stock. I imagine this isn't the sort of thing you handle, but I figure you might know how one can return to the original samsung rom from the one I just flashed. Or is there no major difference between the two?
Thanks for you time.

Hi everyone,
I just obtained a Galaxy S2 Tab 9.7 called T810N is this compatible with this rooting procedure? Unfortunately I am in need to root the device because I need to obfuscate the device vendor and model to make a certain software running that is hardcoded to a ****ty archos 80b tablet I have but it is broken.
From what I have heard rooting in junction with root explorer app enables me to care about that issue and renaming the vendor and device id.
Any ideas?
