Been looking for a thread on this but cannot seem to find it. How does one go about doing this? If I download an app to the computer and want to install directly to the phone, how can I do it if Kies does not allow me to do it? It keeps telling me it is not the right format when '.apk.' states it is.
BTW, is the lastest Kies suite v1.5.1.10074_2?
Switch to mass storage on your phone and transfer the file over.

You don't need Kies. Just connect your phone as a "Mass Storage device" to your computer and copy the apk file either to the internal or external sd card. Then using a folder organizer (either the inbuilt or any other app like astro) locate the apk file on your phone and click on it. It should then prompt you to install it.
Hope this helps.
adb install
Or if u cant use USB cable, just transfer the .apk file to your SGS via bluetooth then find the file in your SGS. default is:/sdcard/bluetooth then ryn it from there.
GL
Estrongs File Explorer can access any share on your computer directly.
Also, you can use adbWireless (just search for it). Assuming the SDK is installed, you can do:
adb connect x.x.x.x (your phone's ip address)
adb install your_app.apk
No usb connection needed.
Thanks guys. I transfered the file directly using the Mass Storage method used Astro to gain access to the file to install it. Great help from all of you. I do appreciate it very much. Again, a big thank you.
Dropbox is also great for transfering apk-files to your phone!

That's what I'm using
Perfectly fine, and even very practical. I sometimes give out links to my dropbox to my friends if they want an app that they saw on my phone.
Whoops, double post.

i haven't found a thread about it and i'm searching for this by 2 months, i'm want some kind way to browse my internal memory by pc, if there's a way, name it please. And have another question, i already have root me play and installed Astro, IO and ES Explorer but no one haven't asked for superuser permission, cuz i want to to change the apk file from psemu native and i need this permission, if someone can help, don't hesitate, please.
adb pull is your best bet to copy internal memory to your pc to browse it.

Going into your phone via SSH should allow full access, since you have root. The app needed on your android is QuickSSHd ($1.49 btw). On your PC, download WinSCP then link them up.
Or if you want to explore the root partition from your phone, use Root Explorer ($3.99)

anyway TS, to add on your choices, try 'wifi file transfer pro' https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransferpro&feature=search_result
works like a root explorer, but this is for PC, browse or upload/download to/from your android file system..

I've personally used WinSCP on my android, so yes. Works brilliantly
Ok i just got the Galaxy nexus (verizon), Im trying to transfer HI-Res texture packs to .n64oid, Yet the GN doesnt mount as Mass storage so the folder doesnt pop up.
Im rooted and running CM9, When connected i see the option MASS STORAGE but its not highlighted.
any way around this?
I do have the GN toolkit incase that helps.
USB Mass Storage is not supported on the GNex.
Either use ADB or some app that does things wirelessly.
what kind of apps do it wirelessly?

Don't really know, but I think there are a few, like Wifi Explorer, Airdroid, etc.
If all you want to do is copy a file to the /data directory, why not just use MTP to copy it to /sdcard and then user Root Explorer (or something like it) to move it where you want it?
I would personally just do it over ADB. Open a command prompt in the direcotry where you have your adb.exe file and type:
adb shell
su
Now you have full access to the file system.
ill try this... THANK U FOR HELPING
just did what i needed with ROOT EXPLORER. Thanks for ur help. i dont know why i didnt think about it
I must be doing something wrong. My previous Android phones, I plug into computer via USB and mount it and just drag and drop files. This one you plug it in and gives you the option of MTP and PTP and won't let me move over a lot of types of files. I need to be able to move zips like a ROM over to the phone and it says file type not supported or some such and give me the option to skip or cancel the transfer. So it gives me no option to transfer. What do I need to be doing? Thanks.
There's no USB Mass Storage, the Galaxy Nexus has 1 unpartitioned storage space and requires MTP to transfer. It cannot be mounted or changed to be mountable.
Most issues with transferring via MTP arise with people using improper drivers.
I use an FTP server app on my phone (SwiFTP, but I don't see it in the Play Store atm) and filezilla on my PC. It caan also be done via adb or various apps such as AirDroid.
I forgot I do have Wifi file explorer so I'm uploading that way now.
I can access my Clockwork Mod files via my Gnex, but they are not accessible when trying to copy to my PC. I see the device, I can see the CWM folder, but no backup folder exists. I can see everything else on the device. Tried coping the files to the root with no success. I have been able to access this files in the past.
Ideas?
I haven't had a problem specifically with CWM files, but changing the folder options on my PC (inside the Galaxy Nexus folders) to "show hidden files" usually did the trick...

Small chance, but look in your "clockworkmod" folder and its subfolders and see if there are a file called ".nomedia" which would cause the folder contents to be hidden when connected to the PC in MTP mode.
You can also use the app AirDroid to transfer files through WiFi.

I'm pretty sure that's a solution to the opposite problem. Hence, the files are showing up on the computer and phone file manager, but not in the apps. The .nomedia file tells the apps not to scan the specific folder they're sitting in. For example, yesterday my friends Galaxy Mini wasn't showing any pics in the gallery app or music in the music app, even though they clearly existed on the phone (via file manager and when hooked up to the PC). Deleted the .nomedia file and <insert sound effect here (I.E."BAM!"> all was good.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Try Local Sync, it easy and fast.
Thanks
Thanks. Local Sync doesn't seem to be much quicker. Can't find the option to sync one folder only, so it is syncing my entire CWM folder.
Question still stands why the heck I can't see those files via my PC.

Have tried reboots o both PC and phone. Also tried a different PC. Very strange that i can see everything else.
I could try to restore from a previous CWM backup and see if I am able to copy.
Any luck using adb?

ADB command line is a bit out of my scope. Maybe I'll take a shot at it later. Installed a previous CWM BU, but no success.
Does anyone know why copying files from desktop to gs3 sdcard would not work? Interestingly, from sdcard to desktop is fine.
I am trying to copy the recovery clockwork image to my GS3 sdcard but the copy operation would stall. Please see attached screenshot.
Due to new user restriction, I could not provide external link in this post. But here is the is the url for screenshot: hxxp://imageshack.us/a/img24/5650/copyll.png (replace xx with tt)
The file transfer would not move beyond this point. On my gs3, it says synchronzing using MTP.
Would appreciate if anyone can help me here.
Thanks
Try another usb cable

Try an FTP server for the Android. It works well, does not require a cable, and is safe and secure. You can mount the drive as a secured FTP site and read and write files as you need to.

I am using Fedora Linux and have installed the SGS3 Easy UMS app. Fire up the app, plug in my phone, and I can see the SD Card. I was having a problem with it working under KDE Desktop and it's default file manager, but running under Cinnamon/Gnome, Nautilus sees the SD Card no problem. I have been able to transfer to and from the card.
