I have flashed a few roms onto my desire and the one i am on now is the rooted Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM by nickiberli! It has come to the point in time when i wish to flash another chefs rom but i dont seem to be able to enter the recovery unlike all the others.
I can try the recovery files and the phone just stays on the red triangle the scripts say permission denied. The session has been run as root/ admin but i still keep getting the same error message.
If i try Rom manager / titantium non of them can enter recovery mode to flash and clockwordmod cannot boot into it either.
I can enter the bootloader fine and the android blue recovery menu but the only options i am presented with are wipe and reboot.
In the past i have had the red triangle (after selecting recovery in the boot loader), gone into recovery mode and flashed with whatever rom i feel fit.
superuser is enabled on the phone and the apps do have the required access but why does the recovery script report permission denied?
I'd try flashing a fresh ruu to take it back to stock, then start over.
I'd check that your rom hasn't modified the update.zip if you used a fake flash.
I am not too sure what that is i just followed the guide here post #2
"•Root guide for users who have unbranded(unlocked) Desire - post #2"
rooted, flashed with the rom i mentioned and now this is where i am, i believe the rom comes rooted
I have the exact same problem.
I have CM6 installed and it's really hit and miss when it comes to getting into recovery.
I have tried holding down and power up, I have tried rom manager and I have tried reboot in CM6 and selecting recovery.
The only way I can get into recovery is through Unrevoked, although now and again rom manager will work.
I have tried multiple times today and just can't get into recovery!!!
I'm just glad it isn't just me.
Out of interest to the OP, how old is your phone? Mine is only a week old.
EDIT: Ironoically after trying several times today I managed to get into recovery using rom manager. But still, this is very hit and miss!!

Hi!
i've got a big problem with my HTC Desire Device. I flashed Ginger Villain 0.6 (or so) some days/weeks ago and updated to 0.8 some days ago but forgot to wipe data&cache. Today I tried to start the clockworkmod recoverysystem to restore my nandroid backup from Ginger Villain 0.6 (because of a note stored in "note everything" which wasn't working anymore after the update to Ginger Villain 0.8.
When i try to start the recovery system, i only get a red exclamation picture. I did a factory reset and then ROM Manager was gone and I wasn't able to reinstall it through market. I managed to install ROM Manager trough a manually downloaded .apk file. When I start the ROM Manager and install the Recovery system, everything goes fine but (i choose my device, get the message that ROM Manager where granted root priviliges) but when i try again to start into the recovery system i get the red exclamation mark again. I also tried to run unrevoked3 again, it pushes the recovery system and then it says that it cant get root (firmware too new?) anyway i have root privileges, it seems that error message doesn't matter.
any advice?
thank you
do you have s-off, you could try reflashing the clockworkmod recovery from fastboot
someone else reported clockworkmod just randomly dissapeering and it was the same rom too :/
hope theres not a bug
if you dont have s-off then the only thing i think you can do is reinstall an RUU, Re-root it and then restore the nandroid
Thanks for your reply. Whats s-off? How do i reflash the ruu? With the original exe from htc website?
just realised something, you mention rom manager quite alot
have you tried accessing recovery via hboot?
voldown+power then select recovery via volume rocker and select with power button.
what version of hboot are you on? did you use unrevoked to root the device or an older method?
Yes i tried accessing recovery via hboot, its v 0.80 i think. I rooted my device with an older method than unrevoked, but i dont remember how
I verified my hboot version: 0.80
ahh ok this makes sense now
you used fake flash to get to recovery
your latest rom does not like fake flash boot from rom manager ive seen this before)
so basically you need to do the following
download this file
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5684959/stuff/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip
rename it to update.zip
place it on the root of your sdcard
boot to recovery using voldown + power (then select recovery with vol down and press power)
when you get to the screen with the exclamation hold vol up and press power.
you will be greeted with the blue engineering recovery
select apply update.zip and it should take you to clockwork mod where you can restor/backup what you need
you problem is that rom manager doesnt like the new build and because youve not used the original root method for so long you have forgotten
you can find someone with the same problem here
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/253957-rom-manager-problems.html
any luck!!!!
Hi! That sounds very good but i haven't had time yet to try these steps, i'll report back soon.
I rooted the phone through the oneclick method went through command prompt typed in adb reboot recovery and its taking me to the samsung recovery mode I looked through the run.bat in command prompt an it said it flashed the 3.0 clockworkmod but nothin so I tried the 2.5 one still nothing I did the Odin flash to stock tried 2.5 still nothing then flashed it to the 3.0 one and still the clockwork is not coming up any suggestions?
down load rom manager and when you open it, at the top it says "flash clockworkMod Recovery" go ahead and do it and i think then you will be ok..
you still need the one click with clockwork redirect..
I tried that an it keeps saying error

Don't you think it would be helpful to tell us what that error is? It's probably because you have the stock kernel which doesn't work with Rom Manager. There are instructions in a couple threads from the past week on how to manually install clockworkmod.
bud had this happen.. just reran the oneclick a second time and was good to go
are you still getting # in adb and can u 3finger to clockwork?
also trt installing the lates superuser from market and when u "adb reboot recovery" make sure u check phone and allow permission
Sorry it reads error downloading I tried doing the tar file for the leaked test build and still it came up as invalid
What is three finger never heard of that and also how can I flash a kernel without a flash recovery image? Thanks.
The three finger death grip is where you hold vol down + camera + power to boot into recovery.
You usually use clockworkmod to flash a different kernel. The other way is to use the epic all-in-one root and recovery (not the one-click). It has an option to replace the kernel with, iirc, the andromeda kernel, which will let rom manager install cwm.
Or you can search for the threads that give instructions on how to install cwm without a computer.
Ok so that three finger works is that the best kernel to use for 2.2 and what is the most reliable rom out
Another thing Ive tried dk28 ext4 kernel, phoenix and andromeda kernals they all work for me but when I do the three finger and flash a rom it gets stuck one did work which was Epic Experience but when it went through it said it was still on dl18 not dk28 so what am I missing? Thanks
The official froyo update starts tomorrow. I would just wait until that hits xda. I wouldn't be surprised if a pre-rooted cwm flashable update made it here by tomorrow night or some time Tuesday.
I finally got it!!!! Thank you for the help
I'm having issues with a bootloop on the incredible after rooting using unrevoked 3 and making the mistake of choosing cyanogenmod as the recovery because I'm incredibly new at this. Now granted this isn't an issue, I have root access now and I'm able to assign superuser and the phone boots to what looks like the stock rom. However, I wanted to flash cyanogen 7 rc2 and it's giving me a lot of issues when I try to access the clockworkmod recovery screen. I downloaded the rommanager from the market and flashed the recovery to clockworkmod 3.0.0.8 as per a wiki online and tried to boot to recovery. from there it hits the HTC incredible screen, then flashes every 3 seconds rather than showing the green text it's supposed to show.
I still have S-on and unrevoked won't run properly again. Tried running the factory reset and it's another bootloop. I tried going through the steps for a "manual recovery file flash via cyanogen's wiki, but I'm running into errors.
Summary:
unrevoked 3.32 completed successfully even using the cyanogenmod rom as the recovery file.
Have root access, S-on, radio version ~.7.28
Can't flash back to stock due to bootloop
Can't factory reset due to bootloop
Can't get to clockworkmod recovery screen due to bootloop
phone able to boot to main screen with original
Ideal solution: get to clockworkmod recovery screen and install C7RC2
Any help appreciated!
Why do you think using ClockworkMod was a mistake? It's one of the better AOSP ROMs out there.
It sounds to me like you're probably going to have to download one of the stock RUUs to completely revert your phone to stock. You might have a corrupted recovery. You can't flash ClockworkMod or an alternative recovery via RomManager?
oh don't get me wrong, my huge problem here is that I can't get into recovery, and I didn't load clockworkmod initally, but it is (as rom manager says) my recovery image and it's just not working at all.
I tried going with a RUU and it wouldn't get into bootloader properly (just shows HTC on the screen till the the ruu times out) I'll try on a 32 bit machine when I get home. I was originally able to flash on that and unrevoked was giving me issues till I did a 32 bit xp attempt. Thanks for the response!
whoops, forgot to address your last point. Tried another version of clockwork and the RA_GNM 1.8.1 and neither stopped it from bootlooping rather than recovery screen.

Did you try getting to recovery manually power off the phone while its off press power and volume down at the same time you should be in hboot use the volume button to scroll down boot into recovery.....
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I don't think unrevoked finish all The way because you should be s-off did you wait until it said "done"..... or did you stop when it said "this is a triumph"
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Okay, from a 32 bit system has resolved the flashing back to a stock rom, I will update as to whether I can get into recovery and will wait until I am told "triumphant" this time around.
Will post an update in a bit if this was all that was necessary to fix the issue. Thank you all to have posted so far, please post if you think I'm missing something else.

No you need to wait till it says done sorry you misunderstood me......let it go till it says done and it stops completely..... because the last thing it does is flash the recovery
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Did you try flashing a recovery through hboot?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Okay, problem totally resolved. basically what happened was that there was an incomplete unrevoked process for whatever reason or another. I repaired by downloading the RUU off the HTC website and flashing back to stock. That generated an error of "your firmware is too new" which is available elsewhere in XDA, basically solved by going into hboot and factory resetting.
Once I had the factory reset completed, I used a 32 bit system to unrevoke the phone (after setting debugging to on in applications > developer settings >debugging on) then I was able to properly boot into recovery. I recommend Clockworkmod update to 3.0.0.8 in Rom manager, but I used 2.5 and didn't have much of an issue. I backed up and the wiped the memory and cache and installed 7r2 without an issue.
The phone is WAY more stable now (thanks to all the hard work at Cyanogen! Thank you also to everyone who posted here!) Pandora doesn't randomly cut songs in half and battery life seems to have improved. Whether that was verizon's crap or I went market-crazy and had waaaay too many apps syncing... I can't say.
Thank you everyone again!
So i am running the stock rom unlocked and rooted. Everything has been working fine until recently.
I wanted to flash a boot animation instead of just copy and paste with root explorer. So i booted into fastboot (volume hold then power). I then selected recovery and my phone shows the android thinking then he's flat on his back with an exclamation point above him. I followed the rootwiki for the gnex to the letter. Any ideas on whats wrong?
Thanks for helping a newb.
No solution from me.. but:

Afraid I can't help you but I had exactly the same issue. I used flashed the original recovery again and again but kept getting droid flat on it's back with the red exclamation mark. Finaly I decided that I found recovery imporatant enough and decided to flash CWM recovery. That gave me at least recovery back. I would prefer however getting stock recovery back. So if someone has a resolution I would be one happy camper.
Tried to flash it again and it gave me an error in adb saying faiked partition.
Any help is appreciated
Try flashing CWM with Rom Manager.
The android on his back with exclamation point is stock recovery. You have a few options: install ROM manager and flash clockworkmod through it (some people's phones need this done before each flash I think based on root process) or you can change the name of your recovery-from-boot.p file which is a file that causes ICS to revert back to stock recovery, and some have to use root explorer to change the read/write access to get clockwork to stick. I would just use ROM Manager for it. If you ever want stock recovery you can download the factory image file from Google and extract the recovery.img and use fastboot
- copy the recovery.img file to the directory that contains your fastboot utility
- start-up a terminal/command session
- put your phone into fastboot / bootloader mode
- type the following fastboot command to flash the stock recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
At least my problem is solved. The fact that droid with the red exclamation mark is stock left me searching how to get into recovery then. It appears that if you hit Volume up and power shortly when you see that image it loads stock recovery menu.
Two simple questions: I want my GN to be close to stock, haven't flashed custom rom's radio's etc. What I do want is Root and SetCPU (for power saving options during screen off), rootexplorer, Volume+ etcetera working. I've managed to put them all on, now:
If I reflash stock recovery and lock my bootloader: will they keep on working and:
If I get OTA updates: will they keep on working too?
Thanks in advance for any reply...

you can leave your phone unlocked and root with a method such as CF-Root and leave your factory recovery and OTA's will go through and install without issue. Having the bootloader unlocker doesn't effect OTA's at all. There are a some programs that claim they maintain root after OTA but even if they don't you can just re root with a program like CF-Root

This. I had the exact same issue when trying to flash anything after I rooted. either flash CWM through rom manager or install CWM permanently if you haven't already. After I installed it I've had no issues.
no idea what's going on. i flashed via Odin to get root, and that worked. but i can't get into recovery via power/vol+ and home. also tried vol+ and power but no joy. download works fine.
i installed rom manager to have a peek and that says i "need to have clockworkmod recovery" before i can do anything. the weird thing is in spite of all this, rom manager *can* reboot me into recovery. i just used it to backup my rom just in case.
for now, it seems the only way i can get into CWM is via rom manager? this can't be right since my htc desire and galaxy s2 could do it from a cold boot. had to in case we screwed something up and couldn't boot an OS.
the root guide i used was via here. not2root.com

Here is CWM 6.0.1.5 mate https://hotfile.com/dl/176065007/332cffb/cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar.html, flash with Odin/Mobile Odin. Also read this for root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901196.
cheers
flashed and got into recovery but not at 1st. i always held down the 3 buttons when trying to enter recovery and this time i noticed a flash of "the recovery screen" before it rebooted and went into android.
apparently you just press the buttons and let go with the note 2? not sure if i just realised it now or if this fixed it but either way i got in so tomorrow can flash a new rom.
cheers
