Freeware tool jungle - Your suggestions - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
As i'm a newby in the desire (android) world i'd like to ask you for your opinion for the best set of tools.
I'm looking for folloingtools:
- Coreplayer like media player, that plays everything (music and videos)
- Vnc client to connect over the open vpn to my home
- location settings tool (when i'm at work disable 3g and enable wifi automaticly)
- navigation system (best would be local installed maps and not always downloaded)
- energy managment program, that is keeping my battery in a good shape
Thank you in advance for all your suggestions!
BTW.: I'm runniong the LeeDroid mod

Pointless post from someone whose only ever contributions to this board and this community is to post admonishing comments to newbs about not posting in development in three... two... one...
I, however, will actually contribute something helpful by suggestion Rockplayer to the first of your questions, although you will definitely get better response in Q&A or general.

I had to Google admonishing.
More to the point android vnc is free, available on the market and works well (unless your server is realvnc)

[APP] Shoutcast Streaming App

Hi guys,
As I don't have an xm account anymore (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2954732) I have created a new streaming app (beta for testing), this time the source is shoutcast, tons of free radios.
The app is written in c++ so it runs pretty fast and compatible with wm 5.0 and up, it works in touch screen phones.
Setup:
Download the cab and install on the device.
Usage:
-------------
1. The Categories screen is shown, choose one category from the list and wait until the list is populated (this process just run once).
2. Choose the radio to play; the radio will start to play and then it will try to display the album art in a thumbnail at the bottom of the screen.
Optional
------------
Tap on the album art thumbnail to get a bigger view of it and also have access to the Add to favourites options an to exit to the app.
Add to favourites:
In the larger album art screen tap in the add icon (plus symbol), the station will be add to the favourites list.
Shortcuts:
-----------
Tap on the top label to back to the categories screen at any time
Tap on the status (the bottom label) to exit the application
cheers,
Hlov
thanx for this!
thanks! works great on HD2. Is there a way to add channels??..I seem to be missing the Trance/Techno stations..

Hey,
thanks for the feedback, As I have mentioned in my post this is in beta so u can tweak it edit the categories.txt file (make a backup of it first and don't change the first line [favourites]) and add a new line with your preferences, the format is keyword|Display ie: Trance|The best trance
Hope this make sense if not reply me and I'll help u,
cheers,
Hlov
Awesome, might cook it into my roms, with credits to you ofc
Works GREAT on my Palm Treo Pro (850).
I think this app is great! Been looking for one for a long time... One question though... anyway you can make it compatible with the crapload of AAC+ stations out there ? I have the accplus plugin dlls from TCPMP if that would help
This app is great! It is so fast! It needs more channels though
very good app
the best radio app i have ever tried, soo good and fast, wish i could add my own stations..keep the good work up..

I second that! Hlov, i would also donate my skin making abilities if you wanted, because i've been waiting for a dedicated SHOUTcast app like this one for ages!
In the meantime i've written MortScripts that query and allow me to auto connect to one of my 4 personal streams with CorePlayer.
Great job! I'll be following this thread like a hawk!
Where does it search with the keywords?
I added the keyword "stern" for howard stern. and on shoutcast.com, i get different results (the ones i want) than through the player.
edit: Nevermind, just found out how to add my favorite station with using the station id in the radios.txt file.
Great app!!
It doesn't show me any back button or other button and whenever i click ready (in the bottom) or nice one (while the song is playing), the application exits.
but i like the application. i have touch pro2.
Thanx for the application
options
great start, how do i add custom shoutcast servers?

Hi, I am really excited about a shoutcast player for winmo, since I use Spider player radio every day on my computer. Anyway, so I tried to add to the categories.txt and adding known shoutcast genre's worked well. I added "House" and "ambient" and both produced a lot of channels. However when I added something like "piano" it only produced 3 channels. I added a category "skyfm" and it didnt come up with anything.
Can the categories added only be the default shoutcast genres?
Is there anyway to add a search in the program?
Also, For pretty much all the things the search results in the program are different then when doing that search on the shoutcast website
Just a few things I have ran into while using your program. Thanks for all the hard work.
One last thing I remembered after the program does the initial search it caches the results and always pulls those back up. Is there anyway to refresh the results without having to delete the file in the program directory named after the search
works great but it doesnt seem to open all of the folders - like it wont open the "alternative" folder for me...but apart from that great first edition! hopefully you'll refine it some more!
it also seems to automatically shut off when the phone turns off after about 1 minute (yes its the settings) but it ought to play like the music player which runs even when the phone is off.
i have an hd2 btw...
man this is awesome! I didn't think twice before installing and it's better than I imagined! yeee thanks!!
This app is great!!! was looking around for something just like this,
great app are there any hiphop station???
Fast & Just works!
This app is great so far! it is quick, simple, and just works! Keep up the great work.

[Q] Map networkdrive to access music and movies etc.

Hello all!
First of all, I have to say that the Desire is to me, a wonderful piece of equipment. I really liked unboxing it, setting it up and fiddeling with its functions, however there are a couple of things that quirck me.
I would very much like to be able to map a networkdrive from my home server (Debian Lenny via SAMBA) or from my laptop (Windows 7 professional). I know I can use EStrongs File Explorer or Astro File Manager to access these locations and copy files to the phone, but this is not the approach I would like to use. I would prefer to stream them. Is this possible at the moment, and if so, what software will make this possible. Preferably without rooting the device.
I currently also own a Nokia N900 where I use Wizard Mounter (to mount my SAMBA shares) and KMplayer (a graphical frontend for mplayer) to play my videos. Can this be so hard to replicate on the Android platform?
On a sidenote; Is there any way to adjust the wireless properties to increase power to recieve a better signal from my wifi. This can also be done on my N900 (at the cost of poorer batterfy of course).
regards
bjoheg

Tilt 2: Must have apps

These are some apps I think make the TILT 2 better for everyday use. Some are for fun and some are enhancements. I will not waste time listing GPS apps cause most custom roms come with GOOGLE MAPS & BING and I think they safice as far as GPS apps go. Hope you like some of em.

Wow, if only we had a Sticky where we could put all these apps and it would be easy to find and others could contribute to it and make it really special.

Actually, there's a lot special about that thread. For one, it is a Sticky, making it easy to find, and it is in the Apps subforum where it belongs. For another, it has lots of useful posts from users with not only their ideas on helpful software for our phones, but many links to much of that software and even attached files that can be downloaded without leaving the thread.
You're right about your thread not being special (it's the only thing lame in all this). It has many of the same apps already in the Sticky and little of new value. Had you posted your list in the existing Sticky I'm sure someone might have found it useful, but by starting a new thread in the wrong subforum you've only added to the clutter that makes things hard to find and defeats the purpose of doing a search. Thanks for that.

Start an open source project - anyone want to join?

Hey guys,
I'm a Windows Phone dev who's thinking of maybe starting an open source WP7 project, if I can find a few other people who'd be interested and if anyone has an idea for an application which people would want?
Drop a response here if you're interested
I would but I just started learning programming,. But I would be a tester fir sure.

Windows Phone needs a good podcast app.
I'd love an app to rival DoggCatcher on Android. It would allows you to subscribe to feeds, download episodes, and listen to them, all within the app.
I plan on working on this if/when I get my Windows Phone device.
yeah would love to see a decent podcast app that can download podcast rather than just stream.
Podcast apps on marketplace is great but with 1Gb limit on data cant do alot of streaming
GPS application with offline map
I would be interested in working on this. And by the way, SlapDash Podcasts lets you download/subscribe/stream podcasts, I don't know why it's less popular than the other ones in the Marketplace.
I will be a beta tester if you want.. I know a little about programming but not so confident..

I am willing to help you if I can. just let me know.
shinaku,
Are you a seasoned developer, or just starting to learn?
I was thinking of a simple application that could prove to be a bit challenging to implement. Specifically I am thinking of a remote touch pad application. You will connect this app (client) to a computer, which has a service installed. The app will send mouse commands like move, click, etc to the service, which in turn will control the mouse cursor on the computer.
What do you think about this?
I would love to see a Gameboy Advance emulator. I have no skill at programming, but I can help with the graphics (already have some layouts created from my work on the Zune HD gameboy emulator).
I will volunteer my device for testing if you need. Unfortunately I don't have the time to co-op a open source project. Best of luck though.

Best tools for Android automated testing

Hi all,
(Hoping this is the right forum - its description includes "Discuss functional and performance testing tools and services" but if I select the Question box when posting I'm told "This is not a Q&A forum. By posting questions in this forum you are breaking the forum rules.")
I'm looking for tools to automate functional testing of Android apps. Robotium looks promising but I'd be interested to hear what more experienced Android developers think and if they have other recommendations. Cloud-based services may be interesting too.
Thanks
Mirko
Robotium is a nice choice. I've written a guide about it which you can take a look at.
Also the standard tool provided by the SDK, called the MonkeyRunner Tool, is also a great option.

Good tutorial, thanks.
The ability to control more than one device with MonkeyRunner sounds very interesting. I wonder if you could even simulate two users interacting with each other.

You can do it with Robotium itself. Just specify the actions which you want sequentially, depending on your needs.

I recently uese monkeyrunner on automated test. I really think it's easier than Robotium. Espesially the additional tool hierarchy to view perspective provided by the SDK is very useful.

Android TV using monkey runner
Hi All,
Im new to this forum and Monkeyrunner as well. I tried connecting my cell phone using monkey runner and it works fine, but when I try to connect my Android TV, it doesn't connect. When I type adb devices, it gives output as <IP ADRRESS>:<port>, but waitforconnection command is not able to connect to my TV. My TV and my PC is on same network, I use ADB commands like logcat, push and pull works fine, but this connection using monkey runner is not working out.
Any suggestion guys.
Regards
Devendra
Alternative Tool: Ranorex
I have another recommendation for you: Ranorex. It supports both iOS and Android testing. You needn’t write any code because Ranorex lets you record your tests on real Android devices. It’s even possible to manage your devices over Wi-Fi from a desktop PC without having a USB connection to the devices.
Robotium is no doubt the best tool for android automation. To use it effectively, you can use this app: Robotium
