[Q] Problem with WPA TKIP? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot get my Desire to connect to my router via wi-fi. It works fine when the network is set to open - ie no WPA but will not connect with WPA TKIP enabled.
I can connect to 2 other WPA-protected wifi networks OK - both these use a simple text 'password key')
The router is a Vigor 2600G and works fine with other wi-fi devices (eg Xbox)
The TKIP code is a 64 character hexadecimal code - is this a problem for the way WPA is implemented by the Desire/Froyo?
Any help/advice gratefully received!

Works fine on my O2 router on WPA2 so don't see why it wouldn't work...

I had the same issue with a linksys, I ended up just assigning an IP to the desires MAC address which solved the issue, for me anyway.

I don't see why it wouldn't work either! Like I say, it works fine for me on 2 other routers - both on WPA, just not my home one!
It connects almost instantly when I disable the network WPA security. I have tried reserving an IP address for the Desire - which is therefore the IP address allocated by the router to the 'phone when it connects OK when security is disabled. However this doesn't help when WPA is enabled.
I can't help thinking that it is the TKIP key that is the problem - it's as if I have the wrong key although I have checked and rechecked 6 times at least. Are you guys using a 64 character hexadecimal code or a simple text phrase as your passwords? My router (Draytek 2600G) insists on either a 32 character ASCII code or a 64 character hexadecimal one which works fine on my other wireless devices inc my Xbox.
In other words does the Desire work with WPA TKIP or only WPA AES?
Not being able to use wifi at home is really a major pain!

mine works with TKIP... cant tell you how many times I have typed in that long key re: new roms/wipes.
mines some tp-link 108mbps router btw.

try to setup on vigor wpa2 only.
Wlan - settings - security on vigor.
wpa works with tkip but wpa2 works with aes.

Try to change WiFi channel in the router.

Tried using wifi analyser - confirms channel strength is OK. Tried several channels - no good.
Bloody TKIP!!!!!!!

WPA Problem Solved for me!
I change the Registry value "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WZCSVC\Parameters\DisableWPA"
From "1" to "0"
and now everything is fine.....

Wifi not working with Cisco AP1200 but works with Belkin

Hi all
New to the boards, have searched for this but no answer. The wireless works on my home network which has a Belkin wireless access point with WEP enabled and SSID broadcasted. I am using a static IP address as i don't have a DHCP server. This works fine.
When i tried at work using our Cisco AP1200 with WEP enabled but our SSID not broadcast, it connects ok and the AP says it is associated but i can't ping using vxUtil. I have tried using static IP and DHCP. The DHCP server doesn't get the request from the phone so i tried a static address and it still doesn't work! Changing settings on the access points is not really an option (like turning off WEP or broadcasting the SSID - All our Cisco WIFI enabled laptops work fine but then they use Cisco client software).
Can anyone help? I am using the default ROM with the phone and would like to upgrade to see if it helps but im a bit worried it may go wrong and stuff my phone... and as i bought it on eBay im not too sure about the warranty.
Thanks in advance
The Cisco AP's @ my last company used LEAP authentication. Have you configured the EAP authentication settings on your PPC? You may be able to steal the settings from your ACU clent on your laptop.
Raptor
I have configured all the access points myself and we don't use LEAP or EAP or a RADIUS server or 802.1x or WPA etc... Just WEP and non broadcasting of our SSID. Still no joy!
Try the Odyssey Client from www.funk.com
I gave up trying to get windows to connect.
Good luck
Err i dont see anything about pocket pc's on there?
Can anyone please help? Do i need to try updating the rom?

Well, just enable ssid broadcast.
Download this:

I connect to my AP1200 without any issues with the same settings you're currently running. Are you using MAC filtering? Double check the WEP (HEX/BIN)?

Can't connect to my home wireless router.... help please

Hey
I just got this phone.
Anyways, thought it'd be great to connect to my home internet.
We have an Airport Base Station. It's passworded with WPA Personal.
Anyway, it goes to connect, says I need a network key. I type the password in and it fails to connect. I figure I need to set it to WPA.
I go to configure and then click my router in the list.
In 'General' Tab I've got it as 'connects to the internet'.
In Network key I'm pretty sure i've tried them all. Some settings has the network key grayed out. Other settings I type it in, click ok and it INSTANTLY says the network key isnt correct. Wouldn't it need a moment to verify with the router if I'm typing the right password?????
Anyway I think I've tried all combos. Then when I click my router and hit connect, it says connecting for a moment, then goes back to available.
Any ideas?
I did a hard reset. I havent updated the ROMs or anything yet... would that be wise?
Cheers
bt home hub2 connects but no net
I am wirelessly connected to our BT homehub2 network, but cannot use internet explorer, all the wpa, channel, passkey's etc are the same?
O2xda2s on T-mob rom 2003 2GbSD - Pre-pay O2sim
Last I checked, the angel only supports 802.11B, not G.
No G = no WPA, only WEP.
hmmm
but it has WPA settings in the network key tab?
also it refers to it as 802.11X I think?
ok guys do not confuse encryption with network speed, personally i use in my BA and router with setup WPA PSK (Personal Key) with TKIP encryption, secure and compatible solution
if encrypption is WPA2 the BA will not connect

Shows how long it's been since I updated my angel then, I was not aware that a WPA stack had been added to the available ROM's.

Galaxy W Wifi Drop Problem...

Hi everyone,
I'm using Galaxy W with stock ROM (XXLA2/rooted) and ZyXel (P-660HW-T1 v3) wireless router. I can connect and use wireless home network for a period of time but after a while WiFi drops and then reconnects. This repeats continuously...
I've tried switching WPA2 to WPA also tried using MAC filter only (without WiFi pass), but all of them were useless... Changing from dynamic to static IP also did not worked
I tried a couple of Market apps to fix WiFi issue, but they did not help me either...
Do u have any idea what may cause my WiFi drop problem?
I need your help...
Thanks...
Have you the latest firmaware on your Zyxel?
And is your phone only having problems with this router or all access points? (just to determe the problem eg your phone or your router)
Edit: Try to set the "ReAuthentication" setting higher (9000), i think that solves your problem!
Yes my ZyXel firmware is up to date.
I could not have chance to test my phone with other access points
By the way where can I find the "ReAuthentication Setting" ?

Don't know .... i did read your user manual, but didnt pay attention where this settings is....
You have to try to find it yourself
Ok, i found it and set to 9999 max value
I'm testing it, i hope i do not get any more drop
Thanks for your interest...
Well you can get a drop, but its only every 2.7 hour, if thats not ok, you could try to set it to 0 maybe then re authentication is fully off.
Setting the value to 0 sounds good Then it will become something like WEP i think...
Anyway I'll try also this...
Thanks...
please don't use wep keys as they are awful weak
stay with wpa or wpa2
Actually I do not wanna use WEP but since it is static maybe it will help me get a more stable wireless connection. And when i tried WEP for the first time, I noticed signal quality got a abit stronger Is it logical or strange?
I know WPA/WPA2 is more safe but I wonder if using WEP with MAC filter is equivalent to WPA in terms of security issue?

It isn't. Have a read about the differences:
WEP used a 40-bit or 128-bit encryption key that must be manually entered on wireless access points and devices and does not change. TKIP employs a per-packet key, meaning that it dynamically generates a new 128-bit key for each packet and thus prevents the types of attacks that compromised WEP.[3]

(From the Wikipedia Wi-Fi_Protected_Access page - I can't paste the link as I'm a new forum user)
I see...
I'd better keep using WPA/WPA2.
Thanks for the explanation...

MAC filter security is the best, and even much better than WPA or WPA2!
The advantage is that MAC id's are like a footprint for a network card, like a DNA.
The disadvantage is that every device you want to add you have to do it manually.
Good luck!
my phone does drop wifi sometimes too.

Sorry dude, but i can't let you say such a thing.
MAC filter can improve security with encryption but cannot replace WPA/WPA2.
I can crack your mac filtering with WEP security within 10 minutes or less. Just sniffing promiscious packets from your router and identifying your network device MAC address.
Many tools exist to easy change any MAC address from network devices. So no, mac address is not a DNA, because it can be changed easily.
So, the best is still WPA2 Entreprise (but it needs Radius Server) or WPA2 personnal with AES encryption. And MAC filtering is good idea, but not alone !.
Thanx mate.....I was just gonna post a link about MAC spoofing and how insecure MAC filtering is.
Here it is anyway:

I do not understand, although I tried wifi connection with WEP without MAC filtering and also WPA (with "0" & "9999" reauthentication setting) I still get drops
Any other idea/suggestion?
(as a reminder: I'm using Galaxy W with stock ROM (XXLA2/rooted) and ZyXel (P-660HW-T1 v3) wireless router)
I'm still having wi-fi drop issue with also custom ROMs...
Is it possible to replace/update modem driver?
Do you have any other idea?

Won't connect to any wifi access points

I've just bought a used HTC Desire on eBay. I've tried to connect it to all of the three (!) wireless access points in my house, and it won't connect to any of them. It gets as far as trying to obtain an IP address, but then gives up after a couple of minutes and disconnects.
The routers/access points are:
- Draytek Vigor 2920n
- Buffalo WHR-G54S (running Tomato)
- Belkin Play Max N600 F7D4401
I've tried a factory reset on the phone and it made no difference. It's running stock (as far as I know) Android v2.2.2, and is locked to the Three network.
Can anyone suggest anything?

Maybe you should try to change the channel in router settings...example for channel 4 or 5.I have the same problem few months ago and for mw it works

I already have a spread of channels - the 3 routers are on Channels 4,6 and 10. If the channel were the problem presumably the phone wouldn't see the access point in the first place??

Hi itm,
Can you provide details such as what ROM, Recovery and Radio you are currently using on your HTC Desire? The post is framed around networking so I will be focusing on that. However, it is possible that the issue is with the smartphone. Can other wireless devices on your network connect to the router? Some ROMs may be missing critical drivers or perhaps it simply does not support the configuration you have on your router/wireless access point (WAP).
Also, being able to detect the wireless SSIDs being broadcast does not mean that the problem does not reside with the smartphone. If it cannot perform a handshake with the WAP then the problem could be because the HTC Desire does not support the configuration of the router.
Suggestions from most likely to most unlikely and the decision to change.
1. Human error when inputting passphase
Check your wireless passphrase is correct when inputting it in your smartphone or temporarily set it to a passphrase that you can easily type in to rule this out.
2. Passphrase is too long or uses unsupported characters.
Try using an alphanumeric passphrase and make sure it is only 63 characters or less.
3. Using a supported wireless encryption (router side).
Try setting the wireless authentication algorithm to WPA2, WPA and WEP and unencrypted (last resort).
As you are running the Tomato firmware, only set it to WPA2 and not with TKIP (unsupported in official build).
4. Problems with DHCP settings
Sometimes the smartphone may be unable to obtain an IP address from the DHCP Server, so setting a static IP addresses is a workaround.
Try setting a static IP address by going to the WIFI screen in Settings and long-press on your Wifi SSID (name), select modify and setup a static IP address. It should be within the IP Address subnet on your WAP, e.g. if your wlan0 is broadcasting on 192.168.12.0/255.255.255.255, setting a static IP Address 192.168.12.5 will work, but 192.168.1.5 will fail.
If there is no 'modify' option, press the Menu button and select Advanced. If that option does not exist, select Other Network and manually input your wireless settings.
5. Check the signal strength on your smartphone. A reasonably acceptable range is an RSSI of around 60 for wireless. Are you moving to areas with poor reception or where there is interference? For example, a running microwave or other electronic equipment running within the same wireless frequency will cause problems; 2.4GHz, 5 GHz.
6. If you are using wireless-N, that is 802.11n (full or draft), try using 802.11g or 802.11b instead.
7. Try disabling mobile data and attempt to connect via WIFI again.
8. If all else fails, I would be flashing another ROM. I ran into a similar problem once, and flashing another ROM allowed me to connect to my WAP. Turns out it was an issue with the kernel, though.
On a possibly related note, why not upgrade to Gingerbread? It has better power management and there is an official release by HTC if you are wary of developer ROMs.

[Q] Wifi connected but no internet . please help !

My wifi at home worked perfectly fine until about a week or two ago. Since then when I connect to my home wifi it appears to be connected with 5 bar signal but the internet is not working . Sometimes I have internet for few seconds, but than it's gone.
I tried 3 different roms including stock , viperx and cyanogenmod 11 all with the same problem.
What do you suggest me to do ?
are you sure it's not a router issue?

I just tried to use my laptop as a wifi hotspot and it worked so the router seems to be problematic .
But I have 2 laptops connected to the same router and are working fine.
Maybe some bad settings
My router uses Openwrt with most settings default.

check if something like parental control is enabled or if the hox mac number is blacklisted... check also if there are conflicts in dhcp and ip reservation....
I would disable DHCP in your phone and put a static ip.
Hold down on the network name till a windows pops up then go on Modify Network>Show Advanced Options>Ip Settings>Static
IP Address: 192.168.x.128 (The X depends on what range your router is. Just do an ipconfig on your laptop to see, 1 is the most commonly used)
Gateway: 192.168.x.x (That is your router address do ipconfig on your laptop to find the 'Default Gateway'
DNS 1: 192.168.x.x (Same as the router as most routers have their own DNS)
DNS 2: 8.8.8.8 (I normally put google's )
