Charging Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody experienced problems with the touch screen on the Evo when it is only charging? My touch screen acts weird when it is in charging mode. For example if I press like the letter "g" on the keyboard it will register like "f" or "t". This problem only occurs when it is plugged into the charger. Thanks for any answers and for taking your time to read this.
Oh, and this is a stock Evo.

Yeah, mine gets goofy too. It started after the 1.47 build update for me. I haven't updated to froyo yet until they fix the streaming issue, but I hoped it would be better. I think its a result of the grounding issue they fixed in the 1.47 patch

So I'm not crazy! Yay! I have the froyo build too. Sometimes it becomes annoying when my screen wigs out. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

[Q] Keyboard Issues after OTA

Just wanted to see if anyone is having issues using the keyboard after the OTA sent out today. Using the stock Sense Keyboard the auto-prediction is skipping some of my keystrokes if i type too fast. For instance (just one example) when I type "doing" the "n" and "g" are relatively close so if i type too fast it clicks the "n" in but then if i hit "g" too quickly afterward it will forgo entering the "n" and the auto-correct will then change the word to "Doug". Which really sucks haha. Just curious if this is a huge complaint for anyone else.
Yup I'm getting this also, for some reason it is skipping key strokes.

i knew im not the only one, the prediction keeps skipping the ones that i really want it to say. prediction usually pops up with the word im using even if i miss 1 letter but prediction misses the whole thing it goes to another word.
its also lagging
This is the worst. Don't know if I can stand it for much longer. And now because we OTA we can't root to go to a different Rom

people actually use prediction? my god you have to sit there and stair at the words that it predicts and then choose the right one, and by that time you have already typed the word and are onto the 2nd or 3rd word afterthat.
this happened to me right when i got my phone. the HTC keyboard couldnt keep up, and that was without prediction or any of that crap on.
i switched to Smart Keyboard Pro and coulnt be happier.
turn off all the prediction crap and auto capitalize, and other garbage and see if the key strokes keep up.
if it doesnt then you got keyboard issues
try a different keyboard app and see what happens.
It doesnt have anything to do with the autoprediction not working its the keyboard not recording the correct keystrokes.
Does anyone have any alternatives to the stock keyboard other than the one already suggested?

I felt like it has something to do with the fps update. Like I was used to typing on a slow keyboard and now its more sensitive. Btw the stock keyboard blows major ****.

ppl actually use the stock keyboard???
So I figured out a solution to the problem for any of you guys out there that are having the same issue. I flashed a few different roms but the same problem with the keyboard kept persisting.
However once I flashed a different kernel on the phone the keyboard worked the way it worked before the newest OTA. I tried the BFS kernel and the BakedSnack kernel and they both fixed the issue with the keyboard. Just a heads up guys.

Im stock and having this issue too. Its driving me crazy, I have to type so slow to make sure things are going thru properly. Any suggestions?
Have any of you noticed if this happens when the phone is charging versus when you're running on battery?

The only one I can offer is to root the phone and flash a custom kernel/rom. Totally fixed the issue for me. Just stay away from the HTC #11 kernel, seems to be the issue.

No the issue happens whether the phone is plugged in or not. Definitely has to do with the new HTC #11 kernel because even when flashing roms using that kernel, I have the same problem with the keyboard.

It only happens to me when I'm typing while charging. Still very frustrating.

[Q]A bug in eugene373's PLANE JANE ICS ROM?

NOOB HERE
Hi, I am using eugene373's newest PLANE JANE ICS ROM, the whole system seems to me is perfect, except the one issue about the touch keys backlight. Sometimes those four keys do not light up even I already unlock the screen, may have to wait for 15-30 seconds, then the backlight comes up. But sometime it works good. So I am just wondering is there any other this ROM users have same problem about this?
Its a little bug, everyone's got it. It'll probably be fixed soon.

Anyone else having this issue?

[Q] Annoying BUGS

Sprint Version, OTA update on launch day.
Bug 1: Continually goes into "Car Mode". I'm not sure if it is somehow related to the holster I'm using or what, but I pull my phone out at least 20-30 times a day and it's in car mode. It becomes super annoying when you answer a call and it immediately goes to speaker phone. I tried "force stopping" this app, but that didn't work. Next step is to freeze it, but come on...I shouldn't have to do that. Weirdest bug I've ever seen. Anyone have insight about some auto-Car mode or pushing certain buttons turns it on automatically??? Weird.
Bug 2: When typing in the texting app (only place I've observed it). I'll get a few words in, then randomly, the cursor goes back to the beginning. It's been happening pretty consistently and I even noticed it on the demo model at the Sprint store (thought I had hit an arrow or something). This happens ~3-5 times per day and annoys the hell out of me.
Other than these, this phone is a BEAST. Super fast and beautiful screen. I'm missing CM10 and will definitely root/flash when the bootloader is cracked.
Anyone else notice bugs similar to these?

Those are ROM bugs. I think they will be fixed after JB 4.1.1 update in December

For the curser thing. Try Swiftkey. You'll absolutely love it, plus it fixes the keyboard curser issue
Thanks for the replies...
Bug 1: This is due to the magnet in the flap of my holster. I'm not a holster guy at all, but at work it's a must since I wear scrubs all day. I can reproduce the Car Mode by placing the phone close to the flap magnet. Makes me think they're going to have Car Mount accessories that will have a magnet and automatically turn Car Mode on when mounted. Also makes me think I need a different holster because my phone thinks it's in the care and I can't shut the damn Car Mode off (yet). Sigh.
Bug 2: It's not the keyboard. I know and like swiftkey, but like the stock android keyboard even more. I installed the AOSP 4.2 Keyboard 10 minutes after getting the phone. The bug lies in the Messaging app. I'm now running GO SMS without any issues....buuuuuttttt....I shouldn't need to do that to sidestep an annoyance in such a critical and basic app. Who the hell is testing these things and lets them out the door with even the slightest flaw in either the phone or SMS apps???
I'm missing my AOSP more and more. I love the phone and the hardware is quite impressive, but if this device doesn't get cracked and CM10 or 10.1 soon, I'll be swapping it out.
the only bug I've seen on this phone so far is that sometimes spell check does not work in the messaging app and then sometimes it does. (Spell check as in when it underlines an incorrectly spelled word in red)
I have noticed the bug #2 as well within the messaging app. Pretty annoying.

Ditto on the keyboard bug. Doesn't happen often enough to me to make me wanna change phones though...
I'm with you guys on the keyboard bug...as crazy as it sounds, I'm playing with the idea that this has to do with tilting gestures...I'm having a little success repeating the bug this way. I'll repost if I confirm this.

Dont have the keyboarding issue.
But i do occasionally have the Car Mode. bug I need this 4.1.1 update asap
Any fixes for Bug 2? My boyfriend & I got the same phone at the same time, and mine does this, his doesn't. I also think it has something to do with the tilt sensor. I'd appreciate any input if someone knows the cause. Thanks!
For 2, I use another messaging app and swift key flow and it doesn't do it anymore. Go SMS or the jelly bean app

I can confirm bug 2 when using SwiftKey 3 on the stock messaging app and especially when typing comments in websites.
the texting bugg has completely gotten annoying for me.. Cant type a full message without the arrow going back to the first word.

Use a different keyboard.
I use Swype but Swiftkey should work too. It is not the messaging app or the Rom.

The software definitely has bugs. But the only only one I can do without is this damn SMS bug.

I too believe it's the keyboard and the placement of it's keys. Using 4.2 keyboard and no problems. Just a taste of some AOSP to come. Hopefully (crossing fingers)
Has there been any official word when we are supposed to receive the update? I know it rolled out in Korea last month.

Anyone ever notice that the responsiveness of the touchscreen sometimes goes away? It will get sluggish and just plain unresponsive?
Happened to me this morning as I was scrolling through FB. Restarted the phone and it was fine.

Love the hardware too much but if the update does not come in 14 Days I will downgrade to the GIII.

[Q] Touch Screen multiple touches for one touch?

Anyone else getting many touches for one touch? For instance if I type "STUPID", I may end up with "STUUUPIIDDD". It's not quite that excessive, but wanted to get the point across. One touch results in multiple letters/clicks every now and then.
Think this is a hardware issue, or something they may be able to tweak with an update?
How 'bout you?
Yea. Not bothersome though.

Oh, it's hella-bothersome. Could be worse if it did it more, but it's still far too much for a "flagship" device.
i bet it's a 4.3 issue or something they overlooked..i remember when there were touch issues back on 4.1 i think ti was...remember on the Gnex, when after you'd touch recent apps, touch sensitivty would drop like crazy and you'd have to shut the screen off and turn it back on?
probably something stupid like that lol

I'm all updated, still seeing it. Not a lot, but enough to be irritating.
I'm having this problem as well. Just got my nexus about 2 hours ago and trying to set it up I'm seeing that long presses are sometimes hard to perform and sometimes scrolling lists will perform a button click on items when I was in the middle of a swipe gesture. I'm also seeing the keyboard issue. I thought it might be a stock keyboard problem but switched it out to thumb keyboard and I'm having the same issue.
My device forced an update right after I turned it on. It connected to wifi and then rebooted, ran the update, then restarted and had to go through the wizard again. Got into the OS and it said there was another system update. Checked version and it was 4.3 but did the update again. Still 4.3 after update. Was strange.
This keyboard issue is annoying enough that I'm thinking about RMA already. The device is pretty amazing other than that
Haven't seen that yet, but I'm using the latest phone version of SwiftKey.
Edit: I'm on JSS15J

I think its just that the screen is super sensitive. I am finding it very difficult to type without having these issues. However I am getting used to it, so my typing is getting better and faster.
I bet in a month or so once you fully "learn" the response of the tablet you won't have these issues anymore.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
^^ Exactly. it'll take a bit of time to get used to it. Plus, "SSSTTTTUUUPPIIIIDDD" sounds nice... wonder if its the problem with STUPID only... or some other words too
I thought I was going crazy for a little bit. I'm getting the same thing on Swype.

[Q]Screen turns off when keyboard slides.

So just now my screen started flickering and it goes black when I slide my keyboard out, but a simple power on-off fixes it.
First of all, this is very tidious and annoying to do -.-
Second, I fear the screen will eventually stop working at all.
So my question, has anyone experienced this before and can give me and info on it? Would flashing a new Rom probably fix it? It doesn't seem to affect anything else at this moment, but I don't know what this little glitch will lead to.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
A lil more info, the screen seems to flash on/off at the second I slide the screen up. When the screen goes black, it still works and responds to any touch as normal, but I just can't see anything at all.
Could this be a LCD problem? Or screen brightness?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Well, my gut tells me that the back light is going out, but I can't be sure. Is the screen really dark (as in, you can barely see anything in it if you shine a flashlight on the screen) or is it off (can't see anything in it at all, even with the flashlight). Also, what ROM are you using and so on?
Thanks for your help, but I'm getting used to it now. When I decide to flash a new ROM, if that solves it then great, and if not, I guess ill just use the phone till the screen blows out. This is only my media phone so its not a big deal and since the problem hasn't gotten worse over the 2 weeks I'm hoping it won't.
