So I need to edit my "hosts" file because it's blocking audiogalaxy. (a pretty cool music streaming app)
So far I have determined that the hosts file is just a text file. So I copied it and edited it with word.
My problem is I don't know how to replace the existing file because system/etc (the place where the hosts file is stored) is read only.
I think that I can flash this somehow, but, I don't know how to do this. Please help.
here ya go, i made you a hosts.zip. just open it up and put your hosts file into the system/etc/ directory, then sign and flash.

The only reason it took me so long to replay was because I was learning to learning how to sign an app.
hey, its all good. glad i could help. you prolly already figured this out, but keep the update then anytime you need to update your hosts just replace it and resign and flash again.
if you try to use adfree to update your hosts file, it wont work on slide*....but what it WILL do is save the hosts file to your sdcard, where you can transfer it to your pc, (optionally) edit it to your liking, then replace it in the update, resign and reflash.
*Adfree has an option now to symlink the hosts file to /data so that the app will work with a locked bootloader, but i couldnt get it to work. but i didnt really try very hard, either.

1st
download these files if you don't already have them
JAVA

then you extract it to where ever you want.

use the update.zip included if your a Beginner it includes my windows 7 theme .. i edit so many files that it's easier to tell what does what and whats goiing to go where. now open that zip file DON'T EXTRACT just open it using winrar..
5th
When it is open go to Framework.. and open Framework-res.apk
NOW IF THE APK. POPS UP AND SAYS IT CANT OPEN BLAH BLAH SELECT A PROGRAM AND THEN SELECT WINRAR.
6th
Once you open Framework-res.apk KEEP THIS WINDOW AND UPDATE.ZIP WINDOW OPEN!!
then just extract the whole Res Folder to where ever you like this makes it easier to see what files you wish to edit.. most of the files will be in the folder called Drawable
7th
open up your favorite photo editor .. i use photoshop along with 90% of the people who Graphic Design... Edit your pictures Remember a file with a .9 can mess up your phone so edit those carefully.. and save what ever pictures you have
8th
Now drag the whole Res Folder .. back into the Framework-res.apk
now your update.zip file is going to say files has been changed to framework-res blah blah do you wish to save it . click yes .. now your framework has been updated you can close everything out
9th
go to the Auto-sign folder.. and open Auto-sign this will now sign your update.zip .. and rename it to update_sign.zip .. now just delete your old update.zip.. rename update_signed.zip to update.zip
10th
put it on the root of your memory card.. reset using green call + menu + end
then hold home and end .. until the recovery mode shows up .. then press Alt+S and hope your device isn't bricked

hey i was looking through and i noticed you did have the .9 files edited, what do you mean they can mess up your phone? Also how did you edit it so that the tab is the way that it is across the screen? Thanks.

Do not edit or open .9.png's They will distort when android tries to resize them, editing them can also make apps force close upon boot. You will make more trouble for yourself by editing these files! Leavem alone! Just opening the files to look at them can make them distort... I fought with these images for weeks and caused serious problems in my theme...

I noticed in framework-res.apk has a "resoriginal" folder with what appears to be all the orignal files. Does this cause any problems when left in the apk or did you just include it so we have a backup?

Just noticed something else, not trying to bash your post Dave but You have to let people know that you need to resign every .apk that you edit! Yes you may get away with not signing the apk, but when the time comes that you've changed something in an apk to such an extent that the sigs do not match anymore, you are going to get stuck at the g1 boot screen. Then you are going to have a hard time figuring out which apk is not signed correctly. Resign every apk just to be safe. Don't cut corners, your gonna end up causing more problems for yourself.

thats correct, assuming that it has been resigned once already. like if you are building off of one of our themes, all our apks should be resigned, so if you dont mess with it, you dont have to sign it again.

Ahh stupid me I left it in there..that's why my theme was almost 10 MBs lol I didn't think much of it since it worked ! Lol..but yeah you can take it out..or use it as a reference lol I guess it works out for a better that I left it there ..and yeah I edited .9 files but I did it in a way that well it worked for me..but it deffintly won't work all the time..you see the blue black in the phone app when u make a call and how it looks streched out..yeah so that didn't work out type good ..but hey it worked and doesn't look all that bad lol..so some you can edit but in a certain way..and others you can't without it messing up..but don't even considor editing .9 button files..atleast until somebody figures out a way where it won't look funny
you can get away wit not signing if ur only editing the icon of the program..every apk in my theme has been signed even ones I didn't edit but if ur. Just editing the icon. And a couple of other things u really don't need to resign..for example.. I didn't sign not one program after I did my back to the future theme ..and my windows 7 theme seems to flash better then my. Back to the future theme..also one other note to add..that if you resign an app..please remember the programs are case sensitive..but to be on the safe side if u edit more then three things in a apk just sign it..as a matter of fact later tonight I will make a auto-sign for every program to make it easy for everyone
And this is non-wipe by default..
Edit- the different things I did from my back to the future theme to this theme for me not to have to resign..

I editied over 10 files without signing.. but if you want to test ur luck be my guest..but that's why I put a disclaimer..but the way signapk.jar works is actually quite interesting ..cause it will auto update the meta files and automaticlly add the sha-1 digest files for you

Nine-patch files are stretchable graphics that allow you to define regions to stretch and regions that will stay the same. This page describes them in pretty good detail.
And you can read how to use the draw9patch tool in your SDK here.
This was just a little something I ran across the other day, and just realized you guys were prob. talking about these.

not really sure which forum to post this in (sorry if this is the wrong one), but all of the new roms that have been created seem to lack the xt9. i had really started to like it. i downlaoded the system dump and was wondering, if i copied the T9DB folder (from the dump) over to the system folder of whatever rom im going to flash, would that fix the problem.
Melvin's ROM: Beast MOD II has it. I'm pretty sure this is more a general question though. Also pretty sure copying and pasting is a no go.

the xt9 option is in all of them under keyboard, but doesnt work. open up sms and try to type something.
i just checked :\
You also need the lib, libXt9core.so. Melvin probably removed it. You should be able to drop that and the apk in their right places and it should work.

moving the folder over to the rom's system folder within the zip fixed it :] and it didnt force close, just didnt work (even when it was enabled)

its very simple. first i downloaded this system dump. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300682 . then opened it up and dragged the folder T9DB over to my desktop. then plugged my phone in the computer and connect to usb storage. dragged the file over to my external sd card and unplugged my phone. then open up root explorer (or some file explorer that allows root access) and copied the file and navigated your main folder (just titled /) scrolled down to find system and pasted the folder in there. restart and it works
the lib is also required for it to work but that wasnt removed witht he rom im using. if you want to check to see if its still there go to the lib folder located within your system folder and scroll all the way to the bottom and their should be a file called libxt9core.so

I turned it off, because it was taking me a lot longer trying to go back and edit my messages ex-post-facto than just make a spelling error here or there.
do you know where i can get the lib file at? im using bombaridier and it doesnt have it in the lib file.

the lib is also in the system dump i described earlier. located at T989odex/lib/libXt9core.so
do u know any other root explorer i can use? Right now i am using Explorer and its giving me the "you cannot paster here because the file system is read-only"
Made this to have ad blocking and be able to watch Hulu on my gnex without having to revert from adfree every time I wanted to use Hulu. Just removed the lines that referenced Hulu.
IT IS ADVISED YOU MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE APPLYING.
Just rename "huluhost" to "hosts"
Backup original host file from /ect
Then move or copy new host to /ect
May need to delete cache/davlik

You need root.

FYI. Here is a the method I use, it will also keep your file up to date.
1) Use adfree to download latest hosts file, this will also backup your original
2) Copy the file to your sd card
3) Open the file with a text editor that supports "find and replace" function, I used Jota Text Editor
4) Replace "hulu" with something else, I use "nothulu"
5) Replace the ect/hosts file with the one you just edited
Let me know if you have any feedback or if you have any problems with this method.

Should work fine without sound on an aosp rom but for touchwiz you'll need to rename it to sanim.zip and place it in the /system/media. And for the sound if you can find the file for sound take that and make it a .wav and rename it to PowerOn.wav. Should be placed in /system/etc I think... dunno I forget exactly.

Its a little difficult if you can find a flashble that is used for bootnaimations then that might work... dunno off hand but you'd need to modify the updater-script which is daunting if you don't know what your doing.

Oh that and the .rar files... hmm its might be too long of a sound because the the PowerOn.wav will only play as long as the original boot sound is... so the sound is pretty pointless. If you get es file manager from the market, open it up and go to the settings and make sure its checked as root browser and that the system is mounted as rewrite then you can go to the favorites and go to the / which is the phone icon or your home. Once there find the /system folder then go to the /media folder then you can place the boot animation you renamed to sanim.zip and overwrite the current one. Reboot and it'll be done.

LOL no no dont delete those files. The bootanimation.zip that you want which is the modern warefare bootanimation.zip... rename that to sanim.zip and place it in that folder... it will overwrite the one currently in there. As for the .rar i would forget it... its not worth it because it wont play the whole sound anyways.
Yes delete those files, otherwise they may flash screens of the Sprint boot ani.

.rar is a zipped folder with winrar.. you have to extract that and depending on whats in that it might work.. other wise no. The sound is too big of a file so what they do is compress it and make it smaller to work. But in our case its not the size of the file but the length of the sound which is only like 10 seconds or so....

gonna give this a shot but have to flash a new rom first. i dont think there is anything for fc19 so i guess im going back to fc09.. ive been have problems with the wi-fi staying connected on fc19 that i never had before so might be better off.. i would imagine that would be the fc19 modem?? ya think?
So here is my problem.
When using my hotspot on my Win8 computer, it wont let me click through certain webpages like cashback websites like bigcrumbs and ebates and gets stuck on the redirection pages like "anrdoezrs.net" when tranfering me to a specific website. It won't fuly transfer me through to the store I want to gain cashback at.
I recently got the new computer with Win8 on it. Now that I have have tried my hotspot on multiple Win8 computers with it not working, I'm assuming it must be the problem. It ran perfectly with Win7 beforehand.
I am currently running [ROM]Phantom's Blazer Rom[Yo][8/2/12][v0.1.5][FF18]
I did notice on the tethering options of my phone that it did not list that it supported Win8. (Yet it does work for mostly all of the websites except the ones I'm speaking of).
Is there a way to fix my problem with the Rom version I'm running right now? (I know its a little outdated).
Do I need to update to a newer version of the Blazer rom? Or should I get a different rom?
(I need to have a rom that has the 4g hacked hotspot and it need to be able to be used with my PS3 for online gaming as well).

Blazer rom has it built in. Delete system/etc/hosts file (filename is hosts) with a root browser. If you need it back, I posted an updated one here:

Root explorer is my personal choice as well as many others.
What TD meant, a root browser that will properly read the root directory. Some file browsers fail at that.

Root Explorer on the market is $3.99. Anything free available? Right below it there is a "ES File Explorer File Manager" which is free. Will that work?

Can't figure out where to go still.
I downloaded Rom Toolbox Light.
Then went to system, then to etc, THEN I get the option between "HOSTS" and the one under it is also "hosts".

Bump some moar? Read some moar?
Seriously though, it's a text file. Just delete it or delete its contents.
Also, I believe using your phone as a hotspot without paying for it is violating your TOS. It's a good way to get kicked off the network.
