[Q] Active Sync working for anybody with Live accounts? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today MS finally turned on Exchange ActiveSync for Live accounts (hotmail.com, live.com addresses).
I've got the settings exactly as shown in the link, but when I get to the screen that says "Select the data to synchronize with the Exchange Server" (mail, contacts, calendar), it fails when I hit "Finish Setup". I get a "Failed to create the account. Please try again later." error.
Anybody get this to work? According to Mary J Foley, it works for some:
According to Microsoft, the “Hotmail team will add Android to list of supported devices in the coming months after testing is completed.” Access from Android 2.1 is not currently supported due to known client issues on Android 2.1, Microsoft officials said. However, “(t)here are users successfully syncing from Hotmail via the default application or the Touchdown application on Android 2.2,” the Sofites added.

Trying to see if it's my account that isn't working right, if I'm doing something wrong, or if the Evo's email client just doesn't work with this properly.
Thanks.

isnt working for me either.
I also tried a couple different hotmail accounts.
I am going to try it on my old winmo phone to hopefully get the account created, then try to connect on android.

I dug around the net, and the problem sounds like it's HTC's mail client. I opened a ticket.
Is the 2.2 google client available anywhere to try? Is that a google app specifically, or part of AOSP?
Found a thread. The apk in the first post works.

Great Alternative For Syncing Calendar And Email With An Exchange Server

At my job, our company emails are setup through an exchange server, and they only allow company computers to sync with it directly. They do have a website setup for Outlook Web Access so we can view contacts, email, the calendar, etc. through a webpage, but I would rather have my calendar and emails through the TF3D interface instead of logging into a website. This great little program called Chronobis allows me to sync the calendar, tasks, and contacts through the OWA website. There's also a new beta just released that allows you to receive email. It doesn't support sending email as of yet. It's a nice option for those in the same predicament as me.
great thanks
thank you so much
this is exactly what i needed
How did you get it working?

Can anyone give me some instruction on how to set this up. I have downloaded and installed the app and set up a pop e-mail account as stated on their forum, but still couldn't get it to work. There doesn't really seem to be anything by way of a help file on their site...
I have been after something like this as I don't think our work exchange server is configured to sync with mobile devices...
Cheers
Wonder if this might come in handy for current Mail2Web free users, unable to use Activesync from May 1st. OWA via desktop browser remains free.
thanks
this looks to have good potential .. will try now ! Thanks
One quick thing, would it "lock" my device as my exchange server does when I try to sync directly with it.
Glad you guys are finding Chronobis useful.
One of the biggest problems right now is that I'm having trouble getting this to work with Exchange 2007. In their infinite wisdom, the Exchange developers thought it was a good idea to just completely drop support for WEBDAV in 2007... I like the idea that it is all web services now, but it definitely isn't backwards compatible. I'm also concerned that access to the new web services might actually be controllable by the administrators, were WEBDAV had to be enabled for OWA to function. (Still looking into this one)
So sorry if you are on Exchange 2007, it might be a little while before Chronobis supports it.
Things seem to be working well on the Exchange 2003 front though. If you are having issues configuring it and have Exchange 2003, I suggest you take a look at (or post your questions to) the forums on the Chronobis site, that's where I look for them.
Thanks,

hey guys, well when i go to my companys outlook access OWA site, it has a login that i need to enter on a certain page... https://owana.ford.com/exchange when i enter one username and password for that site, it then states that its been accepted and leads me to a popup that pops up where i enter a different set of username and password....so how would i set up this application?

Problems: Google Exchange Server (Activesync)

Hey guys, since a few days I have massive problems with syncing my device with google (contacts, calendar, emails). I used activesync with the snyc settings to m.google.com and suddenly it tries to sync always the entire content from new, every time stating that there are changes done on the server side which requires entire resync. does anybody have the same issues and a solution to that?
I could never get it working right. I use goosync (payservice).
I use this for contacts and calendar but couldn't get the email portion to work reliably. I use IMAP for gmail.
mine syncs fine.

same, works perfectly for me.
Although i only use google for calender and e-mail, i use dashwire to back up my contacts.
You have probably already tried it, but have you disabled all but one and checked it to see if you still have the same issue?
If it works properly with just e-mail for example, then add in calender and try it again. If it works then add contacts back in or if it breaks remove calender and try contacts instead.
Might help you track down whats causing the issue.
Just an idea.
Mine syncs fine as well. At first I had problems with syncing because I never set up a Calendar or Contacts with Google, so I unchecked everything except Mail. Try that.

Has anyone else noticed that they can't sync Google Gmail via Activesync over the past few days? At first I thought it was just me but soon came to find that the "Error Synchronization" message was being displayed on other Windows phones.
The official error code is 0x8600050c (Communications Error) and in looking over at Google Mobile's Help Forum, there are a few solutions available.
The first suggestion is to delete the current Exchange Server relationship and re-create it. Another solution suggests to un-check the email option in Activesync, reboot the phone, re-check the email option and sync. The latter seems to have the most success.
We couldn't find anything official from Google on the cause of these errors or of a "official" solution. If we hear of anything we'll pass it on.

Yes I agree, but to Google's defense, they say this is in Beta, but we are spoiled with great Google products so we are expecting too much. I do wish they would put more effort to it though, it has been like this since November when I tried it and I haven't seen anything improved in 3-4 months.

Oh don't think I am bagging google & all their great products & freebies.
But it just seem they set expectations so high, that they use the excuse of "beta" forever before releasing anything (witness gmail was an invite forever!).

I had the same problem a few days ago. I deleted the Exchange Server relationship and re-created it, and it's worked fine since. I've had similar problems periodically in the past - I chalk it up to it being a free service.
I got google sync to work, just got my touch pro2 on sunday. works with my main google calendar, saw a user around here recommend ActiveGCSync for additional google calendars, will try that tonight. The only problem I had is i initially synced all my gmail contacts to my phone (most without names or phone numbers), so then I unchecked 'contacts' thinking it would take them out, but instead it removed ALL the contacts from my phone But now all my phone contacts are backed up in my gmail I guess I will have to clean up the mess manually and sync them back up...
I spent a good part of my day so far editing all my gmail contacts and merging duplicates and the last tihng I did was set up a bunch of new 'groups' under the contacts in gmail. I was hoping that after I sync'd back up that I would be able to use the google created contact groups as a means of filtering my contact list, but this seems not to be the case.
From searching around here I ran across a program called 'Seven' and others, which I will explore if there isn't another way. But I was hoping someone could give me some ideas other than individually editing the "Category" of each contact, which seems to be the field which it looks at for "Filter" under the menu soft key.
Thanks
I use Seven Beta to sync all my mail accs. On creation gives me the option for sync of contacts and calendar as well. Everything works great.

Do you sync google contacts that you have put into groups, and then can you use the TouchFlo contact list to filter them by those groups?

Multiple Exchange servers

Hi,
I'll be receiving my new toy next week and after being a HD2 user and growing tired of winmo I was hoping to have multiple exchange server support on the Desire.
According to android this is possible from 2.0.
However it seems HTC has disabled the function and only allows 1 exchange server to be entered.
My main reason for this setup would be to have my work e-mail and my google account ( mail/contact/calendar ) simultaniously on the phone.
Anybody got an idea how to get this working?
Perhaps a different app than the HTC mail application?
Any hints/tips would be appreciated
re: multiple Exchange server support
dirk07,
As far as I can see, there is no option for setting up more than one Exchange server in the Desire. As soon as you set up one Exchange account, when you try to add another account, "Exchange" is no longer in the list of options. However, you *can* have both Exchange and Gmail and numerous other mail accounts set up at the same time, which sounds like it would work for you. You normally would not access your Google account as an Exchange server, would you?
John
True..
However the reason I want to sync my gmail with exchange is cause I also need my contacts and calendar from them..
the work e-mail would need to be exchange as it is the only way I can reach it .. ( no imap/pop access )
Would it be possilbe when disableing sense?
or use something else to sync contacts/calendar?
Your contacts and calendar will come over automatically from your Google account (when you set up the phone, you provide your Google account details). You don't need anything related to Exchange to make your Google stuff synch - that is built into Android. I have a setup just like you, my work email comes across via Exchange, and the Google stuff comes across as well (contacts/calendar/mail) via the Google account setup on the phone.
John
Syncing contacts with more than one source is always a bad idea. I tried this on WinMo with exchange and windows live and found a couple of issues which you are likely to run into with exchange/gmail sync. They are:
1) Exchange sees the entries from live as unique, different entries resulting in duplicate contacts.
2) If you delete an entry from one source, it gets 'revived' when next sync with the other source.
There may be fixes for these issues now but I gave up on it long ago and use my exchange contacts folder as the source of truth.
Im pretty sure you would have experienced these problems before... just adding my 2p
Edit: forgot to mention - without sense, I don't even think you can sync contacts?? Anyone confirm?
@bcmobile
well i would only be syncing mail from one source and mail/contacts/calendar from another
I allready make a point of only keeping my contacts/calendar on one list so I dont get duplicates etc..
@jstegeman
I hope this works If google mail/contacts/calendar syncs by default I indeed would be able to add work mail as my one exchange source..
Guess I wont be able to test untill friday
you can definately have both setup i.e. exchange / gmail as i have. I only have contacts in exchange though. I have also setup gmail so can see emails from there also.
OK guys i thought i would summarise my battle with the energy ROM and activesync/sense 2.5 for my hd2
Previous i had o2 Uk's stock rom, it was ok, but my main mod was to pull email, contacts and calendar off my exchange server and sync the calendar and contacts with my google account through activesync. I used the EnableNonLocalCrossPolination method (ENLCP)to do this.
When i install this ROM i had one problem, the registry key ENLCP was not there. So i entered it and attempted the same trick. However sense would not let me add another activesync account.
Firstly i wiped the phone, then i went in and pair my phone with activesync on my pc. This would enable the ENLCP reg key that i was looking for. I then disconnected the phone, checked the ENLCP reg key on the phone, set it to 1, and then deleted the PC active sync profile on the phone and pc.
After another soft reset i disable sense from the home screen. Another soft reset.
On the next boot i enter the options for googles exchange server (m.google.com) and only ticked the contacts. These sync'd ok. I think enter microsofts email client and enter the 2nd exchange server. Here i only set it to sync my email. I then tested both exchange servers in activesync. They worked!
So i enabled calendar and contacts on both exchange servers and only email on one of them. This again sync'd great. I re-enalbed sense and did another soft reset for good measure.
Sense picked up the email exchange server, but not the google one! Great! Now i add the googlemail email as an imap account through sense and i am done.
Hopefully this helps someone as i have initially struggled with this ROM.

Android calendar sync with MS Outlook

I am synchronizing the Desire's "PC calendar" with MS Outlook through HTC Sync.
However i see, that the custom ROMs based on Froyo (Android 2.2) don't include HTC Sync, as they are ported from Nexus One.
Is there any alternative solution for syncing the Android calendar directly with MS Outlook ?
For security reasons (my company doesn't like to post internal, including confidental , data on Google and making it in fact a public information) i can't use these methods:
- sync Outlook calendar with Google calendar directly through internet
- use Google calendar instead of Outlook calendar
- sync Desire calendar directly with Exchange server
Does anybody else have this issue ?
I don't understand why Google hasn't already addressed this issue. May be they don't wont to see the Android in corporate environment ?
In your situation I don't think so.
I had a problem syncing with Outlook but discovered by using Google calendar you can skip the outlook sync and have your calendar whenever you are when you log on,

As i wrote, i need to synchronize with the Outlook calendar in my work.
I can't really force may company (including all the 50.000 employees worldwide) to use Google calendar instead of Outlook calendar (MS Exchange).
There is no way to sync the Google calendar with my Outlook calendar, for security reasons (confidential data is sent in the Outlook invitations). The whole Google calendar is blocked in my company and i can't even connect the server (for security reasons).

The stock mail app has native Exchange support - or you can use Touchdown which is more feature rich. Google doesn't need to be involved - it's a secure (SSL) connection between your phone and your company's Exchange server.

As I mentioned before, the company Exchange policy doesn't allow direct syncing. For some reason only the access over https://owa.company.com/... is working.
Direct access from Android to OWA Exchange server doesn't work (some ambiguous error appears, probably the Exchange server prohibits this kind of connections at all).

I have tried Exchange for Android 2.0/ 2.1 from NitroDesk, Inc. and after much struggle it was able to detect correct settings for my corporate Exchange.
Apperently i can sync all the folders now (i am not completely sure, as i have played with this soft only for few hours), read email, sync calendar, private folders, notes etc.
It's only a 30 day trial, i hope the official Froyo 2.2 from HTC will come before the trial period expires and then i could use the updated Mail application with extended Exchange capabilities delivered by default in Android.
Hallo,
I am also a newcomer to Desire HTC Sync/outlook 2003. I have downloaded the latest htc version and installed. Everything working fine (basic calender and contacts) except:
1. The contacts are synced on the prename instead of the lastname, although in outlook on last name.
2. I have in the contacts submenus. How do I sync those?
Could somebody help me?

Regarding your first point I think when you are in your contact list and you press menu then settings you can change that (don't have my phone at the moment so can't check it on mine)
I have looked everywhere. I am not able to find in the menu the possibility to rearrange the sorting on lastname. This is perhaps somewhere in the general setup.
Can someone help me?
By the way, I purchased The missing sync. But this is to be discussed in a completely separate thread.

I use outlook 2010, (it's great) and I am not having this issue, the only place I can change this setting is not in my phone but in outlook 2010, go to file>Options>Contacts>names and filing>default "File As" make sure is says last, first
hope this helps
I am using Outlook 2003. The file is set as you have described. All my contacts are arranged in Outlook on the last name.
Perhaps there is really no way to get this arranged in Desire/HTC Sync. I could not find anything in the manual concerning this item.
Many thanks for your effort.
Just got my phone back today, but unfortunatly I'm not able to find the setting anymore. (you can change the display form of names frome first name last name to last name, first name but you can only do that when you edit the contacts name, which is way to much work for all your contacts)

Ditto!
Do NOT go for missing sync. Its very unprofessionally run and full of bus.
Ive had the product for about 6 months and they havent been able to fix my issues. Originally I had problems on Xperia X8 in that my contacts were being removed form the PC when synchronising.
Logged the issue with MarkSpace (which by the way appears to be a two man outfit). I would get a reply every so often to say a new version has been released and I should try it. When askign if the new version was actually a fix for my issue i was told no and that I should 'jut try it'. Good job I backed up my outlook data file first as it deleted my contacts again.
Eventually decided to change my phone and now have a different issue; missing sync is preventing google synchronisation. Also the contacts on my phone which were written to the phone from PC do not synchronise if I edit them. Not only that but if I edit a google contact on the phone that too does not synchronise with google.
These people dont seem to care that there are real users in the field with real data. Once again Im told to 'try the new version' - same result. Problem not fixed
Missing sync would have been better of 'Missing'

Question Syncing Outlook.com Calendar and People with Google Calendar and Contacts

I just received my Pixel 6 Pro yesterday and am having problems trying to connect my Outlook.com account, where I have my Contacts and Calendar, to the phone. I am able to use the Outlook app with them, but I would like them to sync with the native Android Calendar and Contacts apps, like I have done on all my other Android phones.
My last phone, Samsung S9, had an Exchange Activesync type account which I used. The Pixel 6 doesn't seem to have that. I've found on Microsoft and Google web sites that I should be able to use Exchange type, and found the Outlook.com Incoming/Outgoing server and port information, but always get an error that the connection couldn't be made when I try to connect after entering these.
I'm mystified. Since I'm using Google Messages, in the past my contact names showed up instead of phone numbers. Now all my text history is just showing the phone numbers again. Frustrating.
If anyone has successfully synced these to the native apps, or knows what to do, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks
I know there's another thread about this subject in this section. I think there were some proposed solutions (I don't use Outlook.com, so I don't have any suggestions).
i have an outlook.com account (using office365 w/passwordless setup) and i have to go to "account microsoft com" to get a onetime app password in order to add an Exchange/Office365 account to GMail. once logged into my microsoft account, i navigate to Security->Additional Security options->scroll down to App passwords, then select the Create a new password link to get a password. i can sync, contacts, calendar, tasks and email using the Push option.
my feedback is based on the OP mentioning use of an "exchange type account".
I have managed to resolve this. I was finally able to create an Exchange account doing exactly what I had been doing and it finally worked. It's always a challenge to sync to Outlook.com whenever I get a new phone. Now I can go ahead and learn about the Pixel 6 Pro.

AFAIK, Outlook, whether the desktop or mobile app, auto configures Microsoft accounts as limited exchange accounts (Microsoft switched its public email over to Exchange around a decade ago) and generally there is no benefit to manually configuring them as Exchange accounts since it's not possible to enable the features a normal Exchange account would have.

If you also use the Outlook desktop app, or want a no hassle sync between Microsoft and Google accounts, you may find CompanionLink sync software a more efficient method to sync calendars, contacts, tasks, etc. between your Outlook and Google accounts. CompanionLink offers a range of dual service sync solutions, as well as CompanionLink Pro that includes all of them.
