I have seen a couple of posts stating that changing OTA cert to block updates is not recommended. Can someone tell me why?

OTA update process

Please can someone clarify some things regarding over the air updates, e.g. for Froyo/2.2:
1. If one carrier pushes the update before another, can the update be shared with others and applied to any handset/ network, without root?
2. What happens with people who have bought unbranded/ unlocked devices? Should they get OTA from whatever network they are now on?

First off bit early innit!! lol.......
Secondly as its android i should imagine it will be like any other OTA, with all normal rules applying.
1), If the carrier pushes the OTA, it proberly would not be a good idear to share, as some are custom boot logos etc..
2), I expect that will be the case, or it will simple be a download from the HTC site

[Q] un-rooted and having trouble with OTA update

So just the other day I was finally able to root my slide via one of the methods posted here. I quickly installed cyanogenmod 6.1 stable only to find out that it is horrible on my battery life. So I decided to un-root the phone and go back to the stock ROM. So I followed yet another method and I was able to return to the original rom, but I am having troubles applying the OTA radio update. I have attempted both methods posted in the "bible" thread and I receive errors after I choose to apply sdcard:update.zip.
It says "E: signature verification failed installation aborted"
anybody have any idea why this may be happening?
Are you trying to apply the "OTA" update found on this board, or did your phone actually receive the update over the air? If you're back to stock, you will not be able to apply updates found on this site like you could when rooted.
I am trying to apply the ones found on this message board, I never received the official OTA update from t-mobile. I remember when i got the phone (bought it 2nd hand) I was able to apply the OTA update. So your saying I need to be rooted in order to apply it?
Well, not entirely sure about specifically the OTA update, but I was under the impression that any .zip you tried to update while not being rooted would not work. However, if you unrooted, you will eventually receive the update if your phone needed it.
So t-mobile is still pushing the update? I was under the impression that is was only durring a select time frame they would be doing that. I might have to hold off on tweaking my phone around some more and see if it does happen.
As far as I know, anytime your phone registers on the network, it will also peek for updates. I do not think there was a time limit, but I could be wrong.
Alright, I will give it a couple days before I do anything and see what happens. Thanks for the input. If anybody else knows anything, please do share .

Can't ask this as a reply to the OP because I'm still limited access after a month.

Regarding http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27987936&postcount=1
I received a popup about an upgrade, I accepted it, and it failed, because I'm rooted. I'm also getting Code 3 errors constantly and can not receive text messages post OTA upgrade attempt. I'm assuming they're related.
Are the files and methods in that post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27987936&postcount=1 compatable with the upgrade my phone just downloaded, but couldn't install? I see the release and build dates are from May. Is Sprint only just now rolling out that code or is the post out of date and I'm SOL?
OTA updates will usually never work if they do, you'll loose root. If you download that factory rom, I think you'll loose root also. When you goto settings, about phone, whats under baseband and build number? How large a file was the OTA update? Code 3 error, call Sprint, SMS issue. Call them BEFORE you flash a new rom, as dialer codes don't always work on aftermarket roms.
this message brought to you by my GalaxyS3 running Phantom's Blazer
All u have to do is re flash the stock Android recovery and accept the updates and then reroot

Regarding the error, call Sprint and continue to do some research. I've had to fix issues like this on my own as CSR only knows so much. As for the new updates, I'm sure the thread you linked to works.
I am rooted and wanted to update, so I downloaded a CWM zip from Zedomax and flashed it. Instructions are on there if you need them. Link below. This may fix the issues with your ROM, it may not. If you have CWM installed you could try doing a factory reset from CWM and then booting up to see if that fixes your issue. Good Luck.

If your rooted download a updated rom and your problems should go away! lust my experience.
Cant one just temporarily un-root using Voodoo OTA root keeper, accept the update then re-root using Voodoo?

Try this: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-get-passed-a-forced-software-update-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
If that doesn't work, and you've confirmed that it has the older software, then most likely it will not update straight to an unrootable version. So let the update go through and then immediatly block updates again.
If its a older software version what is the likely hood that it will still be rootable after a update and is there any video or guides on this so I know the exact time to stop it from updating and block it again

I just bought one that had the forced update on it because it was the old software. If it's in fact the old software, it will do the forced update to a rootable version. You need to block it when it starts doing the update after it's done downloading.

New update?

I haven't seen anything posted here about it, but Kies is notifying me of a new update. Does anyone know what's different between T700XXU1Ol1 and T700XXU1OK1?
