hello everyone, here is my vibrant with a white skin on the front , a painted white back cover , and a android logo decal on the back . let me know what you guys think .
Love it man... really nice job! what steps are involved in your mod?
Not to much to it really i bought a white decal kit from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/WHITE-PROTECTION-DECAL-SKIN-SAMSUNG-VIBRANT-T959-/300453304661?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item45f4699955#ht_2662wt_1226
used the front piece from that.i then used some krylon plastic spray paint in high gloss white for the back cover, shot it with about 3 coats of spray on clear coat
and threw a android decal i had laying around on the back. thanks for the comment
wow nice, def want to get one to go with my white case. Is it a screen protector as well or just around the edge? Also does it effect the touch sensitive keys?
That's flucking sexy. Im trying this!

awesome..
Hey this mod looks awesome! I have a quick question -- does putting the front decal cover the light from the touch sensitive buttons, or does it still come through? Also are they still are responsive as before? Thanks!
Nice Job! I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. But didn't know there was a white face cover... Which is also great for covering the excessive logos on the front.
Can you be very descriptive about how you painted the back?
looks great
looks awesome. It makes me want to do it too but I know I will mess up the paint job.
I might try this been looking for a white Texas longhorns battery cover might just make my own!
Is it sticky or smooth? Does the white battery cover feel close to the stock one?

Hey everybody sorry for the late response but I just got off work and decided to check what everyone had to say hopefully I can answer all your questions first of all the buttons at the bottom do shine through but not as much as if it were off and their still really responsive .second the front piece is just around the edges and is not a screen protector .third the back feels smooth with the paint on and the clear coat but has a little grip to it which is nice .thanks for all your positive responses . I loved the cat photo lol

So 2 coats of white and one clear coat? did you hang dry on a paper clip or let sit flat on the ground?

If your painting plastic like that you want to sand it down first so its no longer shiny, that way the paint can adhear to the plastic. I would do 2 coats of color and 2 coats of clear and let it dry for several days.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That looks great dude, and it would've been perfect if the sensor and speaker area was fully white too.
Yea I wet sanded with the finest grid sandpaper I could find then sprayed on a coat of krylon for plastic let that dry for about thirty min then shot it with another coat of paint let that dry for about a hour then coat of clear coat every hour I would suggest about two coats of paint and two or three coats of clear coat i look forward to seeing how they turn out

I previously posted in other threads that i was waiting on my skinomi to come in the mail. This is my personal opinion on it and take it fwiw.
This is a good product as i have had it on many of my devices before this one, now saying that i am slightly unhappy with this one in particular. The screen protector itself fits pretty much perfectly and so does the back. However the back (note.. Has only been installed for about 20 hours as of this post) because of its texture does not seem to be sticking too well. Also the side and top pieces that cover the chrome are all too long and overlap a little. Beacause of this i ended up taking them off but i am leaving the front and back on. I will post an update if the back seems to fix itself. I hope that this helped u guys on deciding on this product.

wouldn't throwing away the side piece kinda defeats the purpose of the whole skin? cuz i think the metal sides are most prone to scratches than any other part of the phone.

i installed the same skinomi skin about four days ago and everything you say about the this product is spot on.
i really like the feel of this product. its not sticky and has no orange peel like zagg.
fit on front and back is perfect. the back looks like crap though because of the texture on the back of the phone. mine is not coming off but it "looks" like it is adhering to only the bumps of the texture. i don't think this is a fault of the product though. i would have got one of their carbon colored pieces if i had to do it over again so you wouldn't see the inconsistent adhesion due to the textured battery cover.
the fit around the metal trim of the phone is not good at all. the pieces are too long so i had to cut two of the pieces or else they would overlap. the trim pieces do not fit around the corners well either. they are slightly too wide and there are not slits in the design of the skin to help it curve around the corners. as a result the corners slightly kink in a couple of areas.

Yea forgot to mention the width of the side pieces. They do seem to be to big and not stick around the edges like they should. As u said tho the texture of the screen protector is nice as it is very smooth unlike sagging and some others.

After some trial and error, here's my completed project: a painted white back cover for the Inc2.
I simply sprayed a few coats of Plastdip on the back (after taken apart from the phone, of course) and then did a final few coats of white gloss spray paint for plastics. Total cost = ~$15.
Pictures attached. I affectionately call it "Panda-phone."
Best of all, if you screw up and/or don't like the color you simply peel off the Plastidip and you're back to the original finish. No harm, no foul. Plastdip is basically a vinyl coating that's extremely durable. I've seen people use it on the car wheels...
I've used plastidip in the past on tool handles, never would have thought about the back cover on the phone. It's pretty durable, so I can imagine that it would hold up well. It looks good.
Did you notice any change in signal after you were done?
I've had no signal degradation. However, when you take off the back cover you immediately get disconnected form the mobile network. This tells me that the antenna is built into the cover. You're not adding any metal to the cover so there's nothing to worry about. I'd just be careful about spraying the underneath of it where the metal antenna connectors are. Overspray is easily removed with some rubbing alcohol or goof off though.
Is the battery cover still flush along the sides of the phone or can you feel raised lips where the cover meets the phone?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
It's flush.
Good to know that the plastidip didn't effect the signal. I didn't think that it would be much different on the signal than using a case.
Thanks for sharing

The beauty of plastidip is that you can peel it off if your not happy with the paint you chose. The first time I tried, I used an enamel paint thinking it would be stronger but it never fully cured.

I was thinking about doing the HTC logo in Red or Blue on my white. But that's some detailed work with tape.
Now to do the bezel around the screen and have an all white phone.

Only a matter of patience and time.
I would love to paint the bezel too but I am not found of taping so I would probably just go "panda" style as you did.
I have already cut a cover for the HTC logo but I want a way to out google on the back also. I thought maybe try to find a tiny GOOGLE vinyl.

Has anyone picked up a SkinIt for the T989 yet? Currently i am looking for a front Decal for my T989. I picked up a full body white Decal for my Vibrant a few years ago and loved it. I would like something similar however i am not sure if the skinit is just a rear decal or not.

I currently have a TPU white case i picked up off of ebay for $2.95 and love it i would just like to put a bit of white on the front. It would be a plus if i could get the longhorn logo on it as well.

thats what i was asking if the skinnit came with a front decal also!
I bought 2 of them and I didn't like the fitment. The skin for the battery cover is 2 pieces and there is a big gap between them. The front skin is ok but has a cutout for the screen so you will need a square screen protector to cover it. Unless you don't care about that. There isn't anything for the bezel.

Can you post pics of your phone?

so i'm posting this in the accessories because you guys are the target audience for this mod.
so i took my stock battery case and used some clear plastidip in a rattle can to give it 4 coats and here is the result.
for give the dust, the case was still tacky when i took the pictures and I couldn't clean it yet, but i really wanted to get pictures and post them rather then wait for it to dry
as you can see it adds virtually nothing to the thickness, the badges and color are still very clear. it's textured on purpose, i put the last coat on Very heavy so it would orange peel and increase texture/grip.
the phone still looks great, but has tons of grip now, and this shouldn't affect any cases, accessories, etc.
if you're not familiar with plastidip, it's essentially plastic in a can. the soft almost rubbery kind of plastic you often find on the grips of hand tools. it won't hurt the case, and if you get tired of it you can just peel it off, very easy.
Very cool. Would give an extra bit of grip if you prefer your phone caseless.

I let each coat dry 30mins. I let the final coat dry over night but the can says 4 hours. I put it in front of a fan after the last coat and was able to handle and take pictures after an hour.
Hey that black looks good, i thought about using a color but I'm going to rock clear for a bit first. I think that's what's so awesome about doing this, when you get board you just peel it off and spray it with a new color

Well if it sticks well on the battery door, it shouldn't be a problem with the progress you made.
This black looks sexy and will fit the new black S3 when it arrives, although my choice is the white battery door, then spray it with clear plastidip just like yours, as i'm am not going to change the color that my phone is.
i might as well order an extra original battery door, just in case of i want to switch or something else.
Guys this looks great! Can you please keep us updated on how it wears? I am curious to see if it rubs off with normal use. I like my phone best without a case but it is extremely slippery. Thanks for posting pics!
I got a question about this....does the added grip this gives to the phone cause issues? I'm wondering if it makes it difficult to pull out of your pocket cause of the grip factor to the case.....or is it difficult to put back in pocket?

Moto211,
It's your lucky day for getting a great answer to your question. (sorry, I know it sounds pompus ) But I have and love my UAG case. I almost used plastidip on it....especially knowing that it can simply be peeled off at any time after it dries. I used the plastidip on a DIY mod that I performed on my desktop charging cradle. It took a bit of learning to get the desired finish. I peeled it off 2 times before I was satisfied. (each round was 5 coats)
I can say that it definitely adds grip to slippery plastic. (polycarbonate etc) The problem will likely be the eventual edge peeling of the plastidip. In and out of one's pocket will cause this.
I ended up using Egrips. Very pricey and difficult to cut into position. I made sure none of the corners were sharp (like a square) I rounded them off otherwise their edge would catch and peel just like plastidip. (the photo may not show my latest Egrips work) Anyway, the grip and feel of Egrips is to die for. If kinda feels like a JuJube. It grips like magic to many surfaces like car dash or even pant legs yet it's not sticky. It's much better than PlastiDip in many respects.
When I use my UAG one handed...it no longer feels like it will EVER slide off. Best off all, it still slips in and out of my pocket easily. BONUS...it helps the UAG fit better into my CraigsDock. (that's another story)
The pic below is my blue UAG with Black Egrips. I have a Black UAG with black Egrips that looks even better.
Not with handling no, but my jeans pocket peeled it off nicely, so I coated it again and kept it in my soft pockets like my shirt and it lasted all month.
The largest down fall is that the phone case is smooth, for anything that is non adhesive (like plastidip) that means it will peel off. If you were to put it on a rough surface it would be much better.

For those who are wondering about the durability of plasti dip, a ton of people use this on their vehicles that with stand daily abuse from rain, ice, snow, cold and heat. It's a nice way to give a new look or to protect!
I plasti dip the wheels on my Integra and they hold up fine. My autocross civic gets the whole body dipped in a different color every spring and I pressure wash it with no issues, but dragging it in and out of a pocket would definitely destroy it.

Here's the result of Plasti Dip on the back cover of my Verizon GSIII. I ordered a touchstone charger modded cover and decided to add some "grip" to it. This is 4 coats (starting with very light spray, 15mins between coats). Very happy with the results. Incidentally, the wireless charging still works through the coating - added benefit of sliding around less on the charging dock.
Very nice! I've heard others talk about doing this, but these are the best pictures I've seen of it actually finished. Well done.
Wow that looks amazing, great job.

Did you upgrade the magnets? The ones recommended in the threads are super strong
Thanks everyone! I've wanted to do this as soon as I got the GS3 and nearly dropped it because of the seemingly teflon-slick back cover!
UPDATE: The edges are peeling a little (didn't get as good of coverage as I'd thought). Going to peel and redo the 'dip with more attention to the edges.
"Did you upgrade the magnets? The ones recommended in the threads are super strong"
I didn't upgrade the magnets, but I'm thinking of doing so. My original use for the touchstone dock (with my Sprint Palm Pre!) was in the car and it held up really well. It doesn't seem to have as strong of a hold with the GS3.

I would assume so, considering plasti-dip is basically a spray paint that is more of a plastic than a paint.
If it does come out horrid after using plasti-dip, you can just peel it off.
It looks really great..good job. It reminded me of someone on the Nexus S thread doing something similiar, but i think your result looks better overall.
Here is the tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881062
Good idea but I think you will be disappointed in the PlastiDip performance.
I used to be an avid 1911 pistol grip maker and tried a lot of different materials and coatings to make interesting grips.
One of the things I tried was PlastiDip coating of grips. Ultimately, I scrapped the idea due to peeling edges. No matter how well you prepare or how thick (or thin) you apply the spray, the edges will always eventually lift up and peel. The product simply doesn't adhere well enough to stay on an item that will be handled repeatedly. The dip application version of the PlastiDip product is fairly durable by the sheer thickness of the application, but even it still peels at the edges.
Good luck, I hope you have better success than I did with my pistol grips.

i agree, anything being handled constantly the plasti dip will peel at the edges. i know because i did this like 2 months ago, held up great for a week then it began.
Its most likely going to chip
I just did mine two days ago! I posted the pictures on the backplate thread. I haven't had peeling yet do to my bumper. Covers the edges to eliminate that issue.
