How To Back Up All Data - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm interested in rooting my HTC Evo that has the 2.2 firmware, but I want a very thorough method of backing up all my data first. What is the best method for a complete backup of all the data on my phone?

MyBackup Pro from the Market. When you restore, do not restore system settings as this will cause interference with the new ROM. Restore only apps and data for the apps.
After you root, use Titanium Backup. It's the best app. Also after root you will have the ability to do a nandroid backup which is like a Windows Restore Point such that you can rollback everything to the way it was when you performed the nandroid backup. Very useful when you totally mess up everything.

Need to restore app data

I obviously am not rooted yet. I need to know how I can restore a backup using a non rooted program that will include app data like game info. How should I go about doing this? I have the old phone right here with me, so I can do a fresh backup if needed. I already have backups with titanium, but I can't restore them without root access it's telling me.
I would think that there is some way to restore app data without being rooted. What do you suggest?
Edit: Is there a temp root for people with 2.3.3?

Titanium Backup: Can restoring DATA wreck a rom installation?

Whenever I install a new rom, can restoring the saved data from apps bring along bugs and problems from the previous rom? The TB site says that is not the case, but would like to hear the opinion of other people. I almost always restore the data, is it better to restore just the apps once in awhile?

It depends on the rom. Usually it says on the rom info if it is ok to restore. If it dosent say then usually its ok to restore data. Also if your just upgrading the rom to a newer version restoring data usually doesnt wreck the rom. But you should do a full wipe before flashing a new rom

I have never seen a rom say anything about titanium backup. I see them talk about maybe a nand data restore, but I'm pretty sure that is different than a titanium backup app+data restore. A nand data backup/restore just backs up and restores the entire data partition. A tb backup only backs up the data that is attached to each installed app.
Just to make sure I'm clear to everyone I'm talking only about APP data. I know you can backup and restore system data with tb but I'm not interested in messing with that. It takes 5 min to configure system settings.

Restoring App data can cause issues, and if you want to be safe just do a nandroid backup before restoring all of the apps+data just to be sure. You should have no problems though.
The big thing to avoid is restoring system data. This restores things like settings etc. and is very dangerous unless you're re-flashing the same exact type of ROM as your Titanium Backup (i.e. fresh install of CM7 after being on CM7 prior).
Titanium Backup never wreked my instalation of new roms.

Best backup app for unrooted

For some times I'm having some problems with custom ROMs, so I'm thinking about relocking bootloader and returning to stock... so I want ask, is there any backup app for unrooted phones that contains as many similar features to Titanium Backup Pro?
I was trying My Backup Pro, but when I've backup app and want to restore it, there was an error
noo.. app backup and restore is an app which doesn't require root but will not backup data+ settings
only application apk will be backed up

[Q] Titanium Backup when changing ROM

I heard that titanium backup should not be used when changing to a new ROM.
Is it true? If so, why?
Another question, if I don't use titanium backup to backup everything but just a few user data(like the save of games), and I don't backup the app, just simply the user data, is it okay then?
It doesn't matter if you are changing roms or whatever it just backs up apk files and data folder so it will work on every rom without any problems.
It's better to take the 'app' from playstore after flashing a new Rom..sometimes titanium can get stuck at 'Restoring app data'..happened with me with twice..
Where did you read it shouldnt be used?
I regularly backup all user and system data.
When you go to a new ROM though, its quite fine to restore ALL user apps+data
But when it comes to system apps, I always go through them individually and restore what necessary - some system apps/data may conflict with the new ROM system apps/data.
This is my experience...could be bull**** lol
Alright, thx all of you

The best way is restore apps without data, reboot then restore data. I've been doing it that way since my x10 running donut...
If changing to another rom only restore user data/apps. Don't restore system apps data as it may cause probs.
I use titanium backup on my arc and n7 tablet have the same apps etc and always send titanium data between the 2 devices with out any issues.

Newbie - how do I keep apps and configuration in between flashing roms

I know it is a very newbie question, but how can I keep all the apps and configuration when I switch between roms? Does restoring from nandroid backup will restore the phone and configuration to back how it was? Thanks

nandroid backup will not keep the game data. use titanium backup that's the easiest way

Titanium backup will do the trick but sometimes when restoring old data I've had some issues with lots of force closes and some other unexplainable strange things going on. It's best to start fresh on a new rom.
Titanium backup is your answer
If you back up apps and data from your personally installed apps, restoring should not cause any problems. If you try to backup and restore system apps and data across different roms (ie tw and aosp), you're likely to experience some problems.
When it comes to system data, it can be hit or miss. Generally the only thing that will likely break is contacts, as each provider (samsung, htc) puts their own spin on it, and it tends to not be compatible. but if you use google to store your contacts, you should be golden. After some time you'll know which parts are compatible across all roms (within the same version family).
So, backup everything you want to keep. And make a full nandroid.
Install your new rom.
Restore your personal apps and data (like angry birds)
Make sure everything is golden.
Make a nandroid
One by one, restore any system data you want (like accounts, wifi access points, mms).
After each one, go through a reboot cycle, make sure everything works.
Nandroid and restore next system data
This way you can easily back out of a restore that breaks something without having to start over again. And you will get a feel for what's restorable and what isnt.
Beware changing back to 4.1 from 4.2. There are threads on this worth reading.
And, yes, nandroid will restore everything just like you had it, assuming you choose to backup -everything- (which is advisable).

Through philz CWM I'm currently having 3 roms in my back up. After installing a new rom, I just restore data and all my games data comes back without any problem.

Titanium is the best thing since sliced bread. Although some apps won't give you notifications if you don't clean install them
