Hi guys, My name is Mike and I would first off like to thank everyone for their time and devotion to making our android phones so much better with rooting, roms, etc.
I am very new to messing around with any sort of programming I.E. command promts etc. I am going to attempt to root my phone (Sprint HTC Hero 2.1) using the instructions from this website....xda: How to root sprint 2.1..
Im creating this post to hopefully show others who are afraid to take the risk that it cant be that hard with a guide like in the link above and also just in case i need to ask questions. Like I said before I have no clue as to what the hell I am actually doing Im just tired of reading and feel its time for some doing. Currently the files are downloading as I type so in the meantime if anyone could suggest a kick ass rom and some links possibly it would be much appreciated.
HERE I GO lol
alright i downloaded hero root, htc sync, and sdk. So here is my question is this the correct location if I unzipped hero root into the tools folder of sdk? :
\Users\us\Downloads\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows
the reason I ask is because I don't know if the command prompts are in unison with the names of the locations.

There atleast 3 methods in this section very easily explain and very simple. I've personally have used all 3 and they work within minutes.

I'll keep this short, but the two important steps that really help all of this is:
A: Download the Adroid SDK into ANY directory you want to.
B: In the Android SDK installation instructions page, it mentions a step to add the path to your ADB executable to your PATH environment variable on your computer. Do this so you can use ADB from any folder on your computer, and not have to worry about always running it from the folder you downloaded it to.
Thread moved to Q&A.
First off, let me start by saying I've never done anything like this before. I've just bought my G2 less than two weeks ago. As with all new things, I like to explore all the different things I can do with it. That's when I discovered ROMs and .apk files that weren't in the market. So what I would like to do is install these things. I would like to know how to install them, what I need and what I need to do, step by step. Mind you, I'm novice to phone technology so the more specific you are, the better. Infact, I prefer one sound redundant in this case, so I don't screw anything up. Is there a site I can go to to see ROMs specific to G2, aswell as .apk files not in the market?
I read over a few things, which I hardly understood. Things about rooting and flashing etc. I'm oblivious to what either of them are and how to do it. I tried following one guide "Perma-Root and S-OFF" to no avail. However, it was NOT the perma-root / S-OFF guide on this site that I followed. The one I tried following was on a wiki. I got stuck on the 'adb' part and messing with the 'Path'. Anyway, before I drag this out any further, I'm sure whoever's reading this gets the gist of it. Surely there are guides out there for noobies that have no idea what the tech-talk means. 'adb' and 'root' and blah blah. Just simple instructions should suffice; "Put this file there, install that file, plug in your phone, drag that there, click that and viola!" haha. Thanks to anyone who dare take on this challenge. I know how frustrating us noobies can be.
First off, welcome, you're in the right place.
You'll find a whole load of ROMs for the G2 in the dev forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=758
Most of the apps you'll want you'll probably find on the Android Market, which you can access from your phone (that'll be an easier way for the developers to get them to a large audience as opposed to them just posting them up on another website). You can install apps from other sources though, you just need to change a setting under Menu->Settings->Applications on your phone.
The simplest way to "root" your phone is to use an app called Visionary, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808514 . However, I recommend using the "rage" method detailed at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228 . That latter one does have the scary-looking adb stuff in it, but it's a lot easier than you might think from first glance. The advantage of doing it that way is that you're issuing commands one at a time, so you can see if any of them produce an error message. With Visionary, it sometimes work just great for people, but sometimes it seems not to with no obvious information about what went wrong.
Will post some more in a bit
After you have root. Do a search on the market for "root" you will see all the great programs you have been missing out on. After you play around with this stuff for a bit you will probly want to start flashing roms. A rom takes root to the next level. Roms allow you do do everything from overclocking to changing the way your whole phone functions.
Before you get to that step though your going to want to do a search for "adb guide." Get that installed on your computer then take a look at the gfree guide. I will let stev pick up from here lol.

You don't have to mess with the path. You can just change put all of your files(wp-this.ko, etc.) in the adb/tools folder, then open a command prompt and use the change directory command to get over to your adb/tools folder, then run all of your adb commands.
Happy rooting ^_^
If you want me to just walk you through everything step by step you can just pm me and I'd be happy to help. I can explain everything I just told you in much greater detail... etc.

You can also go to youtube and search for "blackprince310" he has a step by step video walk through on how to do this. Its fail proof. If you can follow instructions you should be fine.

Just read everything fifty times before u do anything...
And then re read another fifty times.
Know how to fix the phone before you break it.
And if you haven't installed the sdk and have adb enabled..then I'm not sure you should do this yet.
Not trying to be a downer...because you'll feel really down if you just don't know whatchoo doin.

Hello I am new to this whole (Mod ) thing and until I bought a Pre Modded G2x I never new it even existed. The first ability to change how your screen transitions got me hooked completely ! I am posting this for the simple fact of Not Understanding
I have viewed several ways to Mod the G2 but none I could understand and I fear Bricking my phone which would not please me the slightest. I was stuck when I read
ABD
Most of the other terms i got. Is there anyone here willing to Chat via Skype or Email IM to help me Root this and eventually install a nice MOD onto my PHone, or simply put How to mod the G2 in - Noob -
Ps. I really like Cyanogen if you want to tell me what you think about that MOD i would be more than happy to Listen
I would GREATLY appreciate it and THANKS !
For chat go here http://webchat.freenode.net/ then for channels type G2ROOT
There will be plenty of people who can assist you during the root process.
ADB = Android Debug Bridge. It's comprised of your phone (that has Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging enabled) connected to a PC that has the Android SDK (software developers kit) installed. It's just a link between your PC and your phone that allows you to do some manual commands (unless you use terminal emulator on the phone) that we can use to gain root access. Once your phone is connected you can type adb <command> from a command prompt (eg start > run > cmd.exe)
Try using the guide I posted. So far a lot of people have managed to get their phones rooted using it and I tried to make it as simple as possible.
Link here =)
The guide in the wiki is very straight forward and is the safest means to root as it was developed by the devs who actually found the means to root the device. The only way you can screw anything up is if you mistype something so please, please double check your typing.

The Links/Guides stickied thread has tons of valuable info, as does the Wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801206
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Your best bet is to read up, and understand as much as you can. If there is something you don't understand, run a search on this forum's search function. If you REALLY can't find it, after legitimate attempts to use the search function, then come on here and ask. This is how most of us figured out how to mod our phones when we first started. As hinted at in the video in post #3 above, there are thousands of users here, and lots of newcomers trying to figure out how to root their phones. If those in the know spent their time leading people by the hand over Skype, they wouldn't have time for anything else. People have already spent lots of time writing guides, so put them to good use.
UPDATE
So yesterday after 5 long hours someone was willing to Completely walk me through which really helped. I understand the basics to rooting a phone now. The net question is a few. I need help deciding the Mod I will use. I messed with Cyanogen before but heard many good things of others. What are a few Favorites, or recommendations. And how would I go about installing it so I dont lost the android market. Also if I want to take off a Mod how would I go about doing that

First off, download ROM Manager from the Market and, once installed, use it to flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Once that is done, use it to make a backup of your existing ROM.
ROM Manager has many great ROMs listed and you can read reviews of them and flash them via the app. The sticky in the dev forum has a list of many other downloadable ROMs, many of which aren't already listed in ROM Manager.
To go back to the ROM you're on, just restore the backup you made.

they tell you to put Q's in the Q&A forum.. then you do it, and you get **** for it. this isnt simple for everyone and there are different intricacies to all the firmware. if you dont want to answer a legit question, dont. but its amazing how smug this place is sometimes. give the guy a break, he just got the phone.
Try
Dont worry. Just try out the guides

it might work for you. If you really wanna root just go for it and post your results for other users benefit. If you can wait then wait till your version comes under the umbrella.
Cheers

I wasn’t giving ****. I was simply stating that proper use of the search function (with multiple stickies in each sub forum, and agreements when you sign up stating to use it prior to posting) should be followed.
When I was green and first got my android device, I searched and searched and read anything and everything relevant before making any post. Too many people on these and other forums are lazy and don’t put in the time to really learn about their devices before beginning to mess with them. At least half of the people in here shouldn’t even be rooting their phones as they're technically inept from being able to recover from a blunder.
I've read so many posts which shouldn’t even exist if diligent information gathering and processing was actually executed, polluting the forums so much that finding a piece of useful information by simply browsing through all the bullarky, is next to impossible. I personally instead now strictly use the search function when looking for information that I may require.
Also, on page 3 or 4 of that thread, even though the op says "to 2.37.762.2 ONLY" there's been reports confirming it works with his version as well.
I've been experimenting on finding a way to downgrade 2.43.
Once receiving my phone back from repair after a true Brick (where only viable recovery is through jtaging) I found my device was updated to 2.43.661.1 which is part of the unrootable category at this time. So even after not being able to work on my rom for 3 weeks, due to the device being in repair, I still can’t work on my rom because I can’t push apk's and files into system area's to which root access is necessary.

First url points to a method that does NOT work.
psneuter does not work, therefore the goldcard downgrade will not work.
Second url is what I posted as the first response.
@ Babycover
Before attempting to root, take the next few days to learn about things like the goldcard, RUU's, the Android SDK's, and basic linux commands (since android is simply a version of linux). Look at various tutorials on how to do things (but dont actually do them, just take note on similarities, and reocurring commands so if you were to do them you'd be comfortable executing them). Familiarize yourself with everything before experimenting.... makes recovering from a problem a lot easier than reading replies of people who think they know what they're talking about.
Things to note: Any RUU can be used once your device has radio S-off and use them rather than a PD98IMG.zip from your sd card. Your spash screen can only be changed if your device has ENG[ineering] S-off ('ENG' will take the place of 'SHIP' in the bootloader). Do not partition your sd card using CWM recovery; even though it supposedly has been fixed, it still may brick your phone (I personally dont believe you should have to partition an SD card ever!).
If the 2.37 method of the rooting doesnt take, you're in my boat with an unrootable device. You might as well see if you can update to the latest 2.5X build if your phone isnt carrier specific (using an ruu, and the device's data that cannot be synced with a google account or sense will be gone, but atleast you'll have the latest build)
If you do manage to Downgrade, dont use the post-downgrade rooting method, rather, follow my steps to root, radio s-off and eng s-off
Its a collection of what works, simplified for use without extras.

Hey im a new member the forum, but i've been surfing it for quite some time, and have also been trying to root a Desire Z 2.3.3 for a while now, and im no good at ADB (complete newb), and have failed in every other "Noob friendly" guide . So i was wondering if anyone didnt mind to set up a remote session and root it for me and maybe either teach me or to flash a ROM or two.
Much thanks
~Trev
just follow the wiki guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
if you have questions related to that guide post it here or pm me...
it´s actually not that complicated
Funny that was one of the first ones i tried, and i am willing to bet i made a mistake in more than one place. Didnt even come close to working it haha. I take noob to a new meaning of the word XD
ok i will try to help you...
first thing you need to do is get adb to work. follow the guide i posted to do this...
to see if it worked do the following:
enable usb debugging on your phone connect it to your pc open cmd.exe go to your platform-tool folder and type "adb devices" if your phone shows up you are good to go....
Make sure you downgrade first. Not trolling, just throwin it out there

EDIT: NVM i found it!
honestly, i found that the guide on cyanogenmod was the easiest by far.
i tried xda's way and kept getting frustrated. no offence to anyone by any means, but for my personal perspective cm's way was much easier for me. and i was a complete newb, even though ive have some knowledge with cmd.
