How do I move Dalvik-cache to the /cache partition? I know apps2sd can do this, but is there a way to do it manually without installing apps2sd?
You might want to check out the scripts that come with netarchy's kernel. I think his kernel does that, maybe I'm thinking of something else?

His kernel doesn't, I'm using 4.1.8 now.
Don't make spelling mistakes like your OP when you're typing into a command line!
Did netarchy remove this option in his newest kernel? I am running 4.1.3 and it comes with the following script. I don't know if there are any associated binaries necessary or what not, but this should at least point you in the right direction.

Thanks I'll give that a try. Not sure to run from recovery mode & adb shell or from term emu. I'll see what happens.
Well I haven't been able to run that script anywhere, any ideas on how to do it?

What about Estrongs File Explorer? There is a root option on there which I've used to delete system apps before. I believe it has the ability to move stuff as well. Just a thought. Don't know if that is manual enough for you.
I also read in someones thread yesterday as they were defending ClockworkMod that the dalvik-cache resides on the cache partion already. Said that wiping the cache partition wiped the dalvik as well. Are you saying that this is not true? Curious...I'm still learning the ins-and-outs.
BTW, thanks for posting the rooting guides for 1.47. Yours was very instrumental in getting mine rooted. Helped solve my "Main Version Older" problem. Big thanks!

Your welcome on the root deal.
By default, dalvik-cache does not resides in the /cache partition.
I guess I'm a little confused as to why you don't already have the dalvik in your cache partition? I just looked at netarchy's 4.1.8 and it has the dalvik script already. As far as I can tell the only binaries his kernel adds is one for the zipalgn script at boot, so I don't think you need anything other than the script to place the cache in another partition.
How are you checking the placement of the dalvik cache?

I just installed a new kernel and afterwards read about clearing the dalvik cache before installing kernels. Since I never did this should I clear it now, or do I have to clear it and then install the kernel?
clear then install
Is this the same thing as "cleaning" the dalvik cache using Titanium or do you actually have to delete the entire cache folder?

To be on the safe side i do it both in Titanium and then when i am in Clockworkmod, I do it in the advanced section too - by the way if you do not have partition done on your sd card u will see an E: error message. You can ignore that.

Thanks alot .... I did it the way you suggested and am rebooting now. I appreciate the help.
For kernels, you want to delete the cache partition, kernel stuff usually isn't help in the dalvik cache. On Amon_Ra style, it's wipe cache. On CWM I think it's wipe cache partition (Don't know, have not used CWM in a while).

Cleaning in Ti only deletes unneeded files. Do this after you uninstall an app or two. Wiping in Recovery clears it out completely, so you'll have a longer next boot time while it's rebuilt. You only need to wipe it when changing to and from one of King's with HAVS.

So I don't need to wipe when updating Chads incredikernel?
You should always wipe caches when swapping kernels, even it its switching kernels from the same dev. It takes like no time to do so why not? I've forgotten to and usually it makes no difference. Sometimes its just forced closed's until I can restart and do it right.

Hi guys I own a htc desire 526GPLUS with mediatek 6592 and the manufacturer doesn't released source codes
Now I want to port a rom made for another device with mt6592
Can I port it and can I use drivers by copying it from driver folder from my stock rom and I will use boot. Img from stock rom
Question 2
What makes different devices require different kernels?
If I get mt6592 source code from another device can I make it to work with mine
Please help
Looking to see if one of the awesome devs here can whip something up. On previous devices we seemed to have some flashable wipe scripts that would do a thorough job of cleaning the device before a flash. For instance one could wipe cache, dalvic, data, and system, as well as do some sort of disc alignment in one flashable script. It would mount the proper partitions and ensure that the device was clean for a fresh install. With all the choices between aosp, ics, and jelly bean roms, this may help alleviate some of the questions about what, and how to wipe properly. I for one would love to see a similar file for this device.

If people have any questions about how to wipe or what wipes are necessary for there particular flash I believe they should read more and learn about there device inside and out so they won't need to ask such questions and can fix problems themselves, not spoon feed them a do all script that they have no clue what it's doing or afterwards if something goes wrong they will have no clue how they got there or how to fix it. My 2c.
I do see your point of making it easier for power users however, but in reality most fresh install require 3 different wipes all located right next to each other(twrp) and dirty installs even less, I don't really see that 10 seconds it takes to wipe the phone clean to be such an issue, but that's just me. Not trying to argue or flame, just my thoughts.

I don't know about disk alignment but this will do the wiping for you.
I know this is obvious but don't run this from the internal storage. Only do it from external.

Does this wipe internal storage? Based on your instructions I am assuming so.
That's the problem to use a script to wipe data also wipe your internal sdcard. The only safe way is to use a custom recovery that doesn't wipe /data/media. I can look into it and see if it can be done without wiping data/media but no promises...
The link above just deletes the directories, including data so i wouldn't recommend using that if you want to keep your internal sd contents.
Here is the one we used on the hercules, maybe you can try to make it work on this device.

You could have it backup /data/media and restore it after the wipe. Of course the better way would be to just skip it but I am not sure how to do that.
OK here is a new one that will wipe data but not /data/media.

Edit: It still wipes cache, system and dalvik just to be clear.
So it wipes data, system, cache, and dalvic. I was only concerned because i thought your original one wiped sdcard.
Edit. Did you see the file i posted from the last script i used?

Yeah it wipes all of those but doesn't wipe /data/media. The original one did wipe all of data so I fixed it to skip media.

- some people suggested deleting titanium's odex file - i cant seem to find it in /data/app (the one which is on root level)
- even full wipe wont help, it'll work fine on 1st boot but after the phone is setup i'll get the message again

its rebuilding your dalvik at every boot. did you flash any mod? it could also be your rom/kernel if it has a dalvik wipe script included. some devs like to trick you into believing that their mod/rom/kernel is the fastest, so they delete you dalvik on every boot. this makes it appear, yes only appear, like their stuff is extra fast. but in reality, its just a clean dalvik. also, check your init.d folder such scripts.

you are using a 4.1.x rom and kernel? i just talked to Francisco Franco, he said his older kernels used to wipe dalvik upon boot.
I have similar problem. I wiped dalvik, and now it gives me Starting apps message every time it's loading. I know it's normal for apps to start lol, but I never had constant notification for it :/

My Incredible running CM7.2 keeps showing a warning in the notification bar that says "Low on space". I don't understand it, because when I click on the notification, it goes to the manage applications screen, which indicates that there are 207MB used with 541MB free internal storage, and 156MB used with 184MB free RAM.
This "Low on space" message is what prompted me to root and install CM7.2 in the first place.
Can anybody explain this to me, and give suggestions on how to fix it?

Well, I didn't, but I thought CM7.2 was supposed to fix that issue, and therefore, the problem was being caused by something else. Was I wrong?
what ROM are you running? I have found out that the Touch of Blue ROM integrates this fix already but my understanding is that others do not.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using CM7.2 (CyanogenMod 7.2).
Are you using Touch Of Blue V2.2 available from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492720 ? Have you noticed anything not working properly with Touch Of Blue?
Does anybody else know of any other ROM that fixes this issue with the Incredible? Thanks!
its not the rom that fixes the issue, it;s the ext4 conversion and moving the data partition mod. you might be able to apply it using CWM to your installation without changing the ROM. I only mention that one because it had the fix integrated into it.
i tested it out and it worked okay but I switched to a CM10 Rom because I was still getting the dreaded 2am reboot issue. So I switched to the CM10 Rom in hopes of solving that issue.

Yes and also this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623038 which is the main thread for the no_data_limit mods. The thread you posted is more of a guide for people who arent rooted.
The no data limit mods are very simple to use. They are just a zip file like a rom or any other mod, that you flash thru recovery. The mod then does all the work for you. Just remember to do a backup before flashing, just in case.
Thanks for all of the help everyone has provided so far!
Would it be best to start with Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.v2.0.zip?
In what scenario would Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_dalvik_moved.v2.0.zip be used?

No data limit normal dalvik is the most commonly used. It converts /cache and /data to ext4 from ext3, moves the /datadata partition to a folder on the /data partition, leaves dalvik as is.
The dalvik moved mod does the same thing except it takes the dalvik cache, and moves it to the now empty /datadata partition. This one has been known to cause issues for some people with a lot of apps, as it fills up the now tiny dalvik partition messing with and slowing down apps.
So yeah use the no data limit normal dalvik.
Ok. One final question, I hope, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge, but will flashing Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.v2.0.zip cause me to have to reinstall all of my apps and redo the OTA (*22890) programming?

It seems to have fixed it. Of course, my internal storage has been reduced to 411MB from the original 541MB because the app data, which was previously in the 149MB app data storage partition, is now using space in internal storage.
I'm now debating whether or not to try the "dalvik_moved" version of the mod so that the 149MB partition isn't just wasted space. My dalvik-cache is currently at 133MB, so I'm not sure. If anybody has any thoughts on this, I'd appreciate the input!

I looked the script over and it does nothing more than wipe data cache preload and system. It does not touch internal sdcard (data/media) which is the major part when a dev says do a FULL WIPE.
Not saying this is a bad choice for users just that it is still not considered a full wipe.

Any time I've ran the "Mega Wipe" function, it does the trick for me when needed to. Removes any problems when I've had a bad flash.
But......if someone is skeptical of the script, then they shouldn't flash it. Just posting someone else's findings and making them more available to anyone who might want to use it.

As i stated i looked it all over and the scripts are fine. I just wanted anyone who uses it to know it does not wipe /data/media

Ive seen that the full wipe of going into the mount options and wiping something in there is recommend for some roms, I'm curious to why it's necessary because i've just stuck with the wiping regular and havent encountered problems or force closes yet? Is it a speed issue or something else?
Just curious if its something I should look into figuring out and what exactly it is and wipes different.
Thanks

Its just an easy "all in one" wipe instead of doing it one by one, the zip does it for you. I use the Mega wipe option on it and it cleans the system, data, cache, and dalvik cache of your phone.
Yeah I've used it before but what I was curious about was the wipe method that jlmancuso was referring to, I've heard it mentioned on a few other posts, but I tend to not mess around with formatting my SD if I don't have to unless I know what I'm doing, but I've never messed around with the formatting options on PHiLZ Recovery enough to know what they're talking about when they say to go in there and do that, plus I've never needed to.
I figured that i'm not the only one who like you just does the regular system, data, cache and dalvik cache wipes before flashes and that's it.
From what I've read it seems like some people with certain larger SD cards have to format their cards or something with certain roms... I dunno, i'll just do what I always do and make a nandroid and go screw around until I figure it out, its always worked in the past.
Thanks for the wipe script though, as I use to use one with the e4gt all the time and it's deff a faster way getting through the process when your like me and flash new roms every other day.

1. Sdcard format... this is only a problem with 64gig cards. They are normally formated as exfat which is mainly supported by touchwiz roms (some aosp rons do support it). Most aosp roms dont support that format so the card needs to be formatted as fat/fat32.
2. The issue with internal sdcard is due to changes in android. The older versions use /data/media/1 as your internal while newer versions use /data/media as your internal. So then you have two different sets of data filling up your internal space.
3. The other issue with internal sdcard is that there can be data left over from other roms that can cause issues (fc's and random reboots).
To fix both 2 and there you need to format the internal sdcard but remember to back that up to pc first (mostly it will be your downloads, pictures, and music). The under mounts you will format /data /data/media and reboot into recovery. If you are not having issues than dont worry about formatting internal sdcard. Yet if you are having fc's and random reboots this can fix most of those issues.
