Successfully rooted my phone yesterday, but was unable to flash Android 2.2. After fastboot checks pc36img it just goes back to fastboot screen. Was there a problem with unrevoked3 or clockworkmod?
If you are trying to flash a rom, you need to do that from recovery. What exactly have you done to your phone so far, which root method did you use?
I used the method for rooting Eco 4g with Android 2.2 I rooted the phone through to Android 2.1 then with unrevoked3 then copied clockworkmod files to the sdcard
But have u actually installed a recovery yet? You have to push a recovery through ADB or use a terminal emulator.

I thought clockworkmod was a recovery when I go into recovery it is a clockworkmod version

So you have root, you have your recovery, what is it you are trying to do now?

Yes but more so the update zip I think the recovery flashed correctly, the guide says to go to hboot and the phone checks for pc36img, but once it does instead of asking me if I want to apply update it just go back to fastboot
If you're already rooted why r u trying to flash a pc36 image?

Trying to flash 2.2 root I'm on Android 2.1 now
You don't need to flash PC136.img to get android 2.2. If you're fully rooted with recovery you can flash any ROM that uses Froyo and you'll have 2.2

You don't flash a rom with a pc36img. Download your 2.2 rooted rom and place it on the root directory of your SD card. Also, make sure you delete the pc36img on your card so your phone doesnt keep searching for it later. Turn the phone off. Boot into recovery by holding down volume and power at the same until until the white bootloader screen appears. Select recovery. Then select wipe/factory reset, then select wipe cache. Then select install zip from SD card. Scroll to your rom and select it, confirm yes when it asks, and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it's done it will say install complete. Then select reboot system now. Your done.

Do you have a Rom you recommend and rooting method aside how would i install it
Here is a list of ROMs:

I explained in the post above about how to flash a rom.

I'm starting to get confused here.....
1. Are you sure that you're rooted?
2. Are you sure you have successfully flashed a recovery?
3. Have you copied the .zip of the ROM you want to flash to the root of your SD card and booted in to recovery and tried to flash the .zip?
Sorry for the confusion, but I'm new to this, I'm positive I'm rooted and that I have clockworkmod recovery installed. I copied 2.2 root zip from my desktop to the root of my sdcard along with the pc36img and busybox. All three where part of the download link from the guide
Where is this guide at that you are following? If we can see where you are at, then maybe we can help get you back on track with what you are trying to do.

I assume you're at this part of part 2?
Step 3: After choosing NO to the reboot, you will see a menu again. Select Bootloader from the menu, then use the Volume Down button to hover over "Recovery" and press Power to click on it.
If your phone gets stuck at the White EVO 4G screen, pull your battery, and then power on while holding volume down again. It should boot to the bootloader again, where you can select recovery.
Once you are booted into this custom recovery, go to
It's supposed to go back to your menu (the white menu with the 3 green androids on skateboards) after scanning the PC36.img This is where you boot in to "recovery" Once in recovery, you can flash the 2.2.zip I have to say I've never used Clockwork so I'm not exactly sure if it's all the same menu. I've always used AmonRA
Not sure how i'm tucking it up, but the phone doesn't ask me if I want to reboot or if I want to apply the update what I do know is that if choose recovery and flash 2.2 it says install complete, but when I boot up i'm still in 2.1
Hi!
i've got a big problem with my HTC Desire Device. I flashed Ginger Villain 0.6 (or so) some days/weeks ago and updated to 0.8 some days ago but forgot to wipe data&cache. Today I tried to start the clockworkmod recoverysystem to restore my nandroid backup from Ginger Villain 0.6 (because of a note stored in "note everything" which wasn't working anymore after the update to Ginger Villain 0.8.
When i try to start the recovery system, i only get a red exclamation picture. I did a factory reset and then ROM Manager was gone and I wasn't able to reinstall it through market. I managed to install ROM Manager trough a manually downloaded .apk file. When I start the ROM Manager and install the Recovery system, everything goes fine but (i choose my device, get the message that ROM Manager where granted root priviliges) but when i try again to start into the recovery system i get the red exclamation mark again. I also tried to run unrevoked3 again, it pushes the recovery system and then it says that it cant get root (firmware too new?) anyway i have root privileges, it seems that error message doesn't matter.
any advice?
thank you
do you have s-off, you could try reflashing the clockworkmod recovery from fastboot
someone else reported clockworkmod just randomly dissapeering and it was the same rom too :/
hope theres not a bug
if you dont have s-off then the only thing i think you can do is reinstall an RUU, Re-root it and then restore the nandroid
Thanks for your reply. Whats s-off? How do i reflash the ruu? With the original exe from htc website?
just realised something, you mention rom manager quite alot
have you tried accessing recovery via hboot?
voldown+power then select recovery via volume rocker and select with power button.
what version of hboot are you on? did you use unrevoked to root the device or an older method?
Yes i tried accessing recovery via hboot, its v 0.80 i think. I rooted my device with an older method than unrevoked, but i dont remember how
I verified my hboot version: 0.80
ahh ok this makes sense now
you used fake flash to get to recovery
your latest rom does not like fake flash boot from rom manager ive seen this before)
so basically you need to do the following
download this file
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5684959/stuff/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip
rename it to update.zip
place it on the root of your sdcard
boot to recovery using voldown + power (then select recovery with vol down and press power)
when you get to the screen with the exclamation hold vol up and press power.
you will be greeted with the blue engineering recovery
select apply update.zip and it should take you to clockwork mod where you can restor/backup what you need
you problem is that rom manager doesnt like the new build and because youve not used the original root method for so long you have forgotten
you can find someone with the same problem here

any luck!!!!
Hi! That sounds very good but i haven't had time yet to try these steps, i'll report back soon.
I am trying to root my EVO. I once had it rooted and unrooted it...i think...with unrEVOked. I wanted to root the phone and install a custom rom again but I cant seem to get it to root.
I have tried unrEVOked(and followed all the easy steps to root on a forum....more then once), and once I got the initial screen were it sais to plug the phone in and make sure it has USBdebugging on, I do just that and nothing happens. so....
I tried to use Simple Root .1. Once again, found a forum on how to root with this program and followed the steps...more then once...and still no luck. With Simple Root I watched a video and in the video the prompt screen said that it was pushing a file to the phone and then it is suppose to go to the HBOOT screen....which does not happen on my phone, it skips that step and tells me to go to step 2, but I haven't completed step 1 yet....
------So that problem might not be a problem. I guess I AM still rooted. HBOOT screen sais S-OFF, but i dont have unrevoked on the phone anymore. I was told in another thread that I am still rooted and i need to find a flash recovery because when i go into recovery from HBOOT sceen it gives me a !red triangle!
So i guess my question is how do I go about getting a flash recovery and what do I have to do to acutally use that recovery instead of the stock recovery??
Also i was thinking about using the ROM "EVO ZONE" Any thoughts on that ROM??
Thanks!
dizl.evo
Im guessing you have the latest OTA? If so, you cannot root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176695
This is what i have figured out already.....
I also was doing a little poking around and figured out that i did not have a PC36IMG.zip on my SDcard. I just put it on my card and started HBOOT and now it is asking me if i want to start an update....yes or no?
If that is the recovery zip, then yes let it update
We're comin from a pure power source.
ok, after i do that will i still need to flash recover? or will i be able to find the custom rom then??
And does anybody know anything about the EVO Zone rom?
durring the update it has 11 things that it tries to update....all of them seem to update fine with the exception of number 8 and 9. both are labeled "TP". The first one does nothing and the second one sais it is bypassed. I've tried twice and it keeps bypassing. Is that suppose to happen??
BUMP...Does anybody know if there is anything i can do??
Thanks..
You probably ran a PC36IMG of an RUU or something other than a recovery. You can download Amon Ra recovery from my dropbox here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
It's named properly, just delete the other PC36IMG from your SD card and replace it with this one. Run it through the bootloader the same way that you ran the other one. When it finishes, decline the prompt to reboot and select recovery from the list. You should see the white splashscreen then boot into Amon Ra 2.3.
As for the rom, I'm not familiar with it. If I were you, I'd flash a popular rom that you know is reliable. If you use the default Sense launcher, be sure to flash a Sense rom.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
I'll try to break this down for you as easily as possible.
1) s-off allows you to flash a custom recovery for installing roms. It means signature off which is to say you can install roms that have not been signed by HTC. This ability is critical to flashing and you're on the right track if you have it.
2) Currently your phone has no custom recovery on it, that's the red triangle bit. In order to get one on there, search the development section for the Amon_Ra recovery and download the PC36IMG.zip. Copy the zip to the main part of your SD card, then reboot and hold the volume key after the screen goes black. Your bootloader (the screen that tells you s-off or on) will automatically read and try to install the file.
Hit volume up for yes, let it do its thing then volume up again to reboot.
3) Hold volume down while rebooting to get into recovery. From here, go to usb mode. Copy your sdcard contents to your hard drive. Then turn off usb mode, go to wipe, and wipe it all 3 times. Go back to usb mode.
4) copy the Rom you want to flash to the sdcard and turn off usb mode again. Go into flash from zip, find your Rom and tell it to flash. Once this is complete, reboot and enjoy the new Rom.
Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for all the help, But when I try and click to download Amon it opens up a blank page and nothing happens....
There any way to download the file else where?
I don't have the link on hand but there is an Amon Thread in the Development section, should be able to download it from there.Edit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026&highlight=amon+ra+recovery here's the link to Amons Thread

I got an OTA notification. I'm currently running the stock GB rom,
with s-off, rooted (unrevoked 3.21) and CWM 5.0.2.0. I have ADB
installed and working.
What do I need to do to apply update without messing up
existing root setup?
Anyone know what is being updated? Does it replace radio,
boot or recovery?

Applying the ota will make you loose root, but as long as your s-off you can root again easily.
Not sure exactly whats updated. If your rooted the update will not go thru anyways. It checks to make sure you have the stock recovery, and that all of your original stock apps and system files are there and unchanged. To install you would have to go complete stock other than still being s-off.
it does nothing if you have a custom recovery file.
if you click install, it'll do the count down, but won't reboot.
when you manually reboot, it'll still be what you had.
my setup is:
S-ON
HBOOT: 0.92.0000
CWM: 5.0.2.0
Baseband: 2.15.10.07.07
GingerTiny v2
GingerSense 3.5
So, I need to replace CWR with stock recovery?
All the bloatware is still there I just froze it in Ti.
I guess I need to remove superuser.apk & su?
then update, fastboot flash cwr back,
(is the last recovery.img file from nandroid
backup suitable for restoring cwr via fastboot?),
then reroot?
Think someone will package the update
for cwr flashing?

What line did you edit in the build.prop? What number did you replace and what did you use to replace it? I've been trying to narrow this down also since it's worked in the past. So far I see one user that claims the build is 210690.
So in the build.prop I'd be looking for the line that included "/XXXXXX:user..." and replace the old 6 digit number with the new.

I used root explorer but my editing wasn't very sophisticated. Hopefully someone can shed some light? Post the updated build.prop values for this build and which ones we have to change?

Check this out, hopefully I explained it a little better here. Maybe you could give it a shot or confirm if this is how you did it and if that's the number you edited?

Open build.prop with the text editor and look for:
Code:
ro.htc.checkin.url =http://andchin.htc.com/android/checkin
Change the url to something else but dont leave it blank. This will prevent the phone from contacting thr update server.

The above linked thread is to an entire ROM and requires wiping. Is it possible to create an update.zip to bump me up (and keep me rooted) if I am rooted and have CWM? I know this has been done for previous updates.
This method helped me turn off the annoying install reminders. I used it with Nils' Business Gingersense.

I just went ahead and updated since mine is S-OFF.
The steps I used to update and re-root:
Make sure you have S-OFF.
Boot into Clockworkmod and Backup your phone just in case.
Download the following:
Stock Recovery: http://www.multiupload.com/86N0CZ8NO0
Clockworkmod Recovery: http://www.multiupload.com/UQ3Q5ZI0HO
SuperUser: http://androidsu.com/superuser/ (use binary only if you already had SuperUser app installed)
Copy OTA update in /cache to SD card and name it update.zip.
Copy recovery zip files and SuperUser zip (su-bin-3.0.3-efgh-signed.zip) to SD card.
Rename stock_recovery_PB31IMG.zip to just PB31IMG.zip.
Hold VOL-, press POWER to boot into bootloader.
Press VOL- to update recovery to stock. At this point, it may automatically install the update. If not (red exclamation), press VOL+ and POWER to get to the stock recovery menu and select "Apply update.zip from SD" to update manually.
When update completes and you're booted into Android, go to Settings, Applications, and turn off Quick Boot.
Rename or delete existing stock recovery .zip on SD card.
Rename Clockworkmod recovery, cwm_PB31IMG.zip, to PB31IMG.zip.
Shutdown or reboot phone and get into bootloader again, and this time flash Clockworkmod recovery.
Get into Clockworkmod and use it to flash su-bin-3.0.3-efgh-signed.zip.
Once it reboots, you will be updated and rooted.

Where is the stock recovery file? There is nothing in /cache or /cache/recovery. For a brief time, the OTA update file for Gingerbread 4.08 was in /cache, but nothing in recovery. the update file has since disappeared, but not before I copied it to my sdcard, so I have that.
Also, I noticed after installing that version of Gingerbread on another phone that was not rooted, that once I did that the hboot menu did not appear when holding down the vol key while powering on. Maybe that is an S-off thing only.
Thanks.

I had to search Google for quite some time before finding the stock recovery and when i searched just now, all I found were broken links.
I won't be home for awhile, but let me know if you can't find the stock recovery and I'll upload it somewhere.
Oh yeah, you have to go into Settings, Applications, and turn off Fast Boot or Quick Boot in order to be able to get into bootloader when rebooting.
shoot
I wish I had read this thread before i messed up my phone. I was running fine rooted with unrevoked and I thought I'd be smart and get the OTA to install and worry about re-rooting later. It would never reboot so I did a factory reset. That only stuck mine in a Sense crash loop. I'm on PrimeXL's r40 ROM now for 24hours and I'm looking into what else might be available. It runs ok but I can't get Exchange mail for work because something about "device encryption enabled" policy, pic gallery won't show emmc folders, and keyboard auto-correct goes nuts in portrait mode on internet.

Are you wanting to go back to stock?
If so, are you S-OFF? If yes, it's pretty easy, you can just install the full Gingerbread RUU (the .exe file that installs from PC) to go back completely to stock and it'll boot for sure.
What I would do is do a backup with clockworkmod to SD.
Then install the RUU.
Flash clockworkmod back into it (this is why you need to be S-OFF).
Use clockworkmod to restore only your /data partition from SD.
Re-root by installing su.zip.
You should now be rooted, stock, and all your apps and settings should still be intact.
I don't know for sure the backup and restore will work from one ROM to the next, but it did work when I bricked my wife's Incredible and had to restore from RUU (though it was on stock ROM before and after).
Hi all,
I'm having issues with getting ICS onto my HTC Desire. I have searched the forums, however can't find any easy-to-follow steps when it comes to doing this.
I am running Gingerbread, and have tried to root my device using unrEVOked 3 (however it gets stuck on the final stage saying "Waiting for root... Safe to restart" - I assume it has been done though? I have the ICS image zip file for the HTC Desire
I copied this to the SD card, however, can't find any way of installing it (pressing vol down + power).
I also tried extracting the contents of the archive to the root of the SD card and rebooting (pressing vol down + power), however still can't find any way of installing this...
Am I missing something here?
Is there any "straightforward" guide on the net explaining how to do this?
Any help much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Kim
Take a look at this page http ://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide. Sorry can't post links yet. There is a similar page for the CDMA version as well. Just replace the Cyanogenmod Zip with your ICS Zip and you should be good to go.
I think first you need to check if you're rooted (look for SuperUser in your app drawer). Secondly did you install a custom recovery during the rooting process? That is what you need to access for installing a .zip file, I am not sure what the "ICS image zip file for the HTC Desire" is exactly as I only know of installing a custom ROM to get ICS on the Desire.
Lastly you need to take a backup of your apps using something like Titantium Backup and then when you get into recovery take a full Nandroid backup (back option in recovery).
HBOOT version ?
what's your HBOOT version ? If higher than 0.93, you might want to try out revolutionary.io.
Yes. it is rooted when you get that message. After rooting, you need to install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Recovery. Download ROM Manager from Play Store and install it, it is really straight-forward. And then turn off the phone and enter the hboot using the Power + VolDown combo. Next scroll down to "recovery" option using Volume keys and confirm it by pressing Power. It will boot to recovery. Using Volume keys wipe data/factory reset and install the zip from the sdcard.
