Hey all,
Just received my Desire and loving it. My only issue so far is that even though I've selected in the People app only to display Google contacts there seems to still be Facebook contacts appearing, albeit only the ones who have entered phone numbers into their Facebook profile.
This causes duplicate entries for the same person in messaging apps (default and Handcent) and in the People app it seems to prefer to show the Facebook contact details rather than the Google ones.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ
I have exactly the same problem
are those the contacts that are LINKED to facebook contacts, but not actually facebook contacts?
oh, and you will get du0plicates appearing in third party apps. all that unticking them in people does is hide them in that app. the rest can still see them.
Yes, the linking has happened automatically, unfortunately it doesn't stop the contact showing up twice. For example, I have a friend Hailei, she has an entry in my google contacts with her phone number, this contact is linked to her facebook profile on which she has a fake contact number.
If I create an SMS and type in Hailei as the recipient I get presented with both the real number and her fake facebook number and there's no way to stop this happening. This happens with the standard Messaging app or with Handcent.
in the sms you will get that, yes.
like i said, just because you have hidden the facebook contacts in people, it does NOT hide them in any other application, as they are still downloaded to the phone.
the only way to get rid of the duplicates is to sing out of facebook for HTC sense. not ideal, but hopefuuly it'll get fixed later as it's not an ideal way for it to work.
this is far from ideal esp if numbers match sat tmobiles ie every time they send me a text it date it'd from a contact and my fiancee is then why they sending you texts and I have to show her to prove it. we need to pressure HTC on this to get a fix or at least the ability to delete them from the phones address book. also a side question if anyone knows a way to link the phone button to the people app so o get that come up instead it would be great ie remaping it or something

Anybody know anyone with a Nexus One to confirm if this is an Android 2.1 issue or a HTC Sense on 2.1 issue?
It would be nice if you could import the facebook contacts one at a time into your phonebook, not just as a whole.
I was lucky and found out the whole facebook thing as soon as I started my phone, managed to delete my whole contacts, uncheck the facebook contact sync and start again. No more pointless numbers from people I would never want to phone anymore, but means I can't get pictures up for my contacts.
Handcent SMS now has an option to hide social network contacts, although I don't actually have access to that option, it's in the release notes for the latest version which I have but the option in Settings doesn't appear, I'm not alone on this so must be a bug, hopefully quickly fixed and that puts an end to my problems!

Syncing Facebook contacts into phonebook is actually a Sense function, i.e. part of the HTC's "People" program.
Yeah, agreed: this is an annoying issue... Just because I want to get Facebook photos for my contacts and their status update does not mean I want ALL their details of EVERY Facebook friend being stored on my phone as a contact.
Even more problematic is how Sense handles phone numbers... It will pull phone numbers from Facebook and (seemingly randomly) may overwrite your setting for their phone number.
Example:
For contact "Bob", you set his phone number as +447900000, however, Bob has his Facebook phone number set as 447900000 (notice how the + is missing, because Bob doesn't know that you need the + there and anyway, who cares, it's only Facebook!)
Well, when Sense syncs the phone numbers, it may very well overwrite Bob's correct phone number (with the + prefix) with his Facebook phone number (which you will be unable to successfully dial)... and there is no way to turn this off without disabling the whole Facebook syncing functionality...
Very annoying!
Yup couldn't agree more. I did a reset like 5 mins after starting the phone, just because I didn't want to see the facebook armada on the list. While yes I did aggree to friend requests from my students ... I don't want to have all 200 of them as contacts in the phone prog ...

OK so this is what I did, but I have no idea whether it will work for you. I had a specific contact who I simply couldn't dial so I tried to find a solution.
NOTE: This does NOT solve the problem for all contacts, but read on and it may help...
First thing I did was go into my Google Contacts on my computer and deleted all the Facebook metadata in the "notes" section for each contact (as this was already pulled over from my HTC Hero tagging, and it seemed to have a different format.) << so if you are migrating from an older HTC Sense handset, then this may help you but WARNING: this will take a long time to do for each contact, and you will then need to re-associate every contact.
Next thing was to delete all the contact info off my device which you can do by going to Manage Applications > Contacts Storage and delete all the stored info.
Now go to sync settings and hit "Sync All" (or whatever it's called), or just wait and your phone will automatically re-download all of your contacts.
Now... some contacts will automatically get linked to their respective Facebook accounts and some will need to be set manually (I have no idea why they can't ALL be linked automatically, it seems kind of random...)
Anyway, what I have now found is that:
- Any contacts who were linked automatically: my settings override the Facebook settings
- Any contacts who were linked manually: Facebook settings override my settings
Either way, this is incredibly annoying and I think that HTC really do need to provide 2 extra options:
1. To not download ALL Facebook contacts, only to fetch additional attributes for existing contacts
and:
2. To give us greater control over what these attributes are (i.e. I do NOT want all of my contacts random/invalid phone numbers being imported to my device and cluttering everything up, just because I want their image & wall updates...)
I think you have to LINK the person.
I had the same, but when I LINKED the two 'names', it became one. I could choose which name I wanted to use, the Facebook name or the Google entry name.
You told in a previous post that the LINK was automatically done. This is not true. It only suggests, but you have to confirm by clicking the broken chain behind the name. Then it becomes a chain and the two entries becomes one.
I hoped this helps ya all.
I realised mine wasn't automatic, it was just already linked from when I had my Hero, I forgot it stores the link on your google contacts
Workaround:
Not ideal but fixes problematic phonnumber
When you have linked your gmail contact with fb account
Edit your gmail account and add any number as that persons phone.
Now you should see 2 numbers from that person.
Chosse that fake number as primary number.
Now edit gmail contact again and edit fake number with real one.
It will override fb number if it is in wrong format
Not ideal but at least you have proper number for that person
Using Sense 2.0 here.
Apart from the sms number suggestion thing (i can live with it, but is annoying...)
The real problem is that every facebook contact that has a phone number is synced without the + in the area code. This makes all contacts undialable!!! I checked that on facebook via browser the numbers are correct (they are without area code)!
We really need a solution for this problem, a solution that isn't disable facebook people sync (i want to keep photos etc.)
Hey All,
Had the desire for a couple of weeks now and I must say I'm impressed with it, as most of you are as well.
I've come across the following very irritating problem though:
My primary e-mail address is hotmail. Been using it for years and years and I've never had the need to change to gmail. Having switched to android now I understand that I can't sync the phone to hotmail. I have it working on pop which is 'fine' but I want proper syncing of mail and calendars which is not supported.
Fair enough, I thought this was the time I'm supposed to switch to gmail. When I booted the phone up for the first time I was asked for a gmail account for google maps, etc. and I just used one I had created a while back. Now that I'm looking to migrate to gmail completely in order to benefit from syncing, etc. I want to change this e-mail address to another gmail one.
Has anyone managed to do this without doing a factory reset on the desire??
I've tried:
i. Changing the gmail password from a pc and rebooting the phone - it just says it failed to sign in and prompts for the new password, won't let you change e-mail address though.
ii. Clearing all cache's from google related application - gtalk, gmail, maps, gapps, etc. - This doesn't work either as somehow the account information is still held.
iii. Creating a secondary e-mail address and try get everything to use it instead then remove the primary one - didn't manage either. I changed google maps, gmail and the calendar app to use the new e-mail address but it still won't let me delete the other one as it says it's being used by some other app!
Any help would be much appreciated... I really don't feel like going through a factory reset and installing everything again!
Thanks!
Go to "Menu" - "Settings" - "Accounts & Sync", tap on the Google account en tap on "Remove account". (Go back to all accounts and you can add a new Google account.)

On this subject, my advice to anyone is to get their own domain name and then use Google Apps for Domains.
At present this is what I do for my email, but if in a few years time something better than Gmail comes along, chances are I can repoint my domain to a new mail service and thus keep my email address in perpetuity.
Regards,
Dave

Forgot to mention I tried this as well but it won't let me remove it as it says the account is being used by some application
Really frustrating!
I got this same problem as this old post, but can not find the solution....does anyone know the answer as time has moved on and maybe it is an available solution.
My issue is that I just flashed LeeDrOid 2.3b&c to my Desire. I entered my HOTMAIL e-mail details as the first address at the set up prompt. Now i can not findout how to delete that account.
It seems that the whole Android E-mail setup and operation is not really as good as Windows Mobile! or its operator error ;-)
For my Sync'd HOTMAIL I'm currently using TouchDown and set the server name to 'm.hotmail.com' this thirdparty software allows full syncronisation to my Hotmail account both ways including any folders that i choose, apart from the deleted bin on my Webmail does not get emptied if i delete all from the TouchDown application on my Desire.
On my Gmail i have created my account in the Exchange option and used m.gmail.com for the server, whilst this gives me a view of all the account folders all of them show "no mail" even though i have set the Receive days to 30 days and know that I have e-mails in the folders that are newer than 30 days old.
I really would like a fully operational integrated IMAP set up for both my Gmail accounts (i have 2 account) and one HOTMAIL account, ideally using the built in Gmail and "standard Mail" programs that come with FROYO Sense.
So anyone know the answer to achieving this?
i) How to delete my original Hotmail account entered on start up of my new ROM.
ii) Is it possible to set up withing the Sense builtin applications for Exchange Gmail and also for Exchange Hotmail so that i can do away with hte TouchDown application?
Thanx for any assistance on this.
A slightly lengthy attempt to summarise the (often contradictory) advice on this issue.
The problem: Google is allowing UK users to change from @googlemail addresses to @gmail. Many users report persistent messages that google talk authentication has failed and downloads from the market are freezing.
How to make the change (READ the rest of this before you do!): Login to your Google mail account and go to settings/account. You will see a small link offering the option. Some users report a need to do this twice before it 'sticks'. (Baed on my experience, I suspect the change takes some time to propagate - see final note here). You can reverse this change in the same way.
Solutions (or not!)
1. There is no 100% reliable way to change the gmail account details on your phone without a factory reset.
Some users recommend clearing the Google Apps data from within Apps Manager which then prompts you to set up the account details again. This option is grayed out for many
Some have recommended changing your account password. For me this did not allow me to change all the account details on the phone
2. You can set up a second gmail account on the phone with the @gmail details. However this may not allow you to delete the @googlemail account although some have suggested it does. You will recieve copies of all emails on both accounts!
3. Do a factory reset. Back up all your data, take a deep breath and go for it! Seriously, this did not actually result in a lot of work for me as I don't have a truckload of apps on the phone. You have the choice of reverting to the @googlemail account (which is what I did) or setting up with the new @gmail details. From what I can gather the latter approach does not result in problems with re-installing paid for apps - but no promises!
NOTE: You will receive email sent to either @googlemail or @gmail on your old @googlemail account so you could just start using @gmail as your address and forget about the problem!
...and finally. Having gone through all of the work associated with a factory reset to @googlemail, I discover that Google has reset my account to @gmail anyway and everything seems to be working OK! I do wonder if changes to accounts are propagating very slowly. (I also wonder if Google knows what it is doing, but that's another story)
Hope this is some help
I had this problem and corrected it by reverting back to @googlemail.
But what gets me is that considering how widespread this problem is, is the overwhelming silence from Google.

Probably because most UK Desire owners have phones from Orange, and they've removed Google Talk (although they've handily left the service running!), so this isn't going to be a problem for them. Also, a lot of people have always known that you could always ignore the `googlemail` thing and use gmail.
Why bother?
Any email sent to [email protected] is received by [email protected] anyway..
Fon22
Why bother? Because, as the OP says, if, in the UK, you change you address from googlemail to gmail, you won't be able to download anything from the App Market.
is there anywhere we can ask google to provide android switchover instructions?
You know you don't have to put the @ when setting up an account.
When I set up both my G1 and my Desire I just signed in with the Google user name.
Just to add my bit, I'm a Google apps account owner, my domain is not gmail or googlemail its simply hosted by Google and even though I've done nothing its stopped working for me also on my desire. I get the same googletalk auth error and can't download anything from the apps store either.
Interestingly, even from my pc, if I goto googletalk it won't let me in either, yet email and other Google apps like docs and calendar work no bother. Selecting Google talk gives a 404 unauthorized.
Plus side:
Picasa web albums now sync

I got exactly the same as this, after everything working brilliantly for 3 days!! I have now setup a gmail account to sign the phone up with and the turn all sync off for it, thrn setup my Google for domains and setup the calendar through exchange and everything is working fine...its a big faff, but it will works well: )
I did do a lot of reading and apparently Google for domains doesn't work with Google talk full stop... BUT why work for days with no problems!! Stupid!!

Ok, sorry for the double post (I started another thread, but pred text screwed up the title which (for some reason?!?!?) I can't edit?).
Anyway, if I add a new contact to my phone as a Google contact, it won't save, or rather, it initially appears to save, but then for some reason is removed from the contacts list.
I'm also unsure as to when the problem originated, but I have a feeling it's been happening for at least the lat 6 weeks, but unless it's a new contact which will be used frequently, it won't be spotted for a while, which is shy int's only recently I've noticed the issue.
so, any help would be great - this is a very infuriating bug.
Edit: I should add - I have upgraded to Froyo (Tmobile OTA - initial german!?!?! release for UK market).
Cheers!

Go to people>menu>view and see if Google contacts are set to visible. maybe that's the issue
I actually have a similar problem i hope somebody can hel with; i have 2 google accounts, one work and one presonal and even though i can save contacts to both accounts, and both are set to sync contacts, i can only see the contacts of one of my accounts, the other just won't show. I have set the "view" settings in contacts to show eveything but still, the contacts from one of my accounts just won't show.....!
Is there any possibility there is some setting in my google account that is not allowing it to share the contacts with my phone??
Thanks in advance
I have found a solution that will probably work in the cases stated above: in your google account go to contacts, and move or copy the contact you want on your phone from "my contacts" to "starred in Android", that did the trick for me!!!
Best of luck!
But the problem for me isn't adding contacts via a website - it's inputting them into my phone, and them staying there in the first place.
I don't know if it's random contacts that aren't storing because I've no idea how long the problem has actually been prevalent.
In People/Menu/View - I have SIM ticked (0), Google (364) ticked, Show auto Gmail contacts not ticked, Myphonebook (0) ticked, Phone (4) ticked (I'm not sure why I have 4 phone contacts as I don't recall entering any in as phone contacts), and Twitter (0) not ticked.
I've now ticked "show auto Gmail contacts".
I've just remembered something - I changed over from Googlemail to Gmail as my email address - could this be affecting things? Gmail addresses were only made available (allegedly) to UK users recently.
So, any thoughts on this people?
Cheers!
Just synced my gmail version of my account to my phone (I think) and no change.
Anyone know if the UK gmail email addresses are .com, or .co.uk?
ie [email protected], or [email protected]?
I've been on quite a comprehensive "google" and from what I've found, it sounds as though this problem has arisen from the Froyo update.
I have tried various things to fix it - dumping caches - exporting contacts to csv - clearing all contacts - syncing to clear - and then reimporting contacts into gmail, and the syncing again.
Again, this hasn't solved the problem...
Still at a loss.

I had mine changed from googlemail to gmail and it stayed as .com
Heard somewhere you can change it to .co.uk be that's not the default change.

Solved the problem, but it took a factory reset to do it.
That being said, Froyo now seems a good deal quicker.
After reset, I had over 100 meg phone storage left (can't remember the exact number).
Any ideas what should be the phone storage on a just "cleaned" phone?
I've still got the dodgy german apps that I can't use on the phone, and these can't be installed from the phone.
What's the best idea?
Maybe I'm an idiot, and forgive me if I'm asking a dumb question, but this feels like something that should be easy but I can't figure it out.
This is my first HTC. On every other phone dating all the way back to my Galaxy S2, when I created a contact, it would ask if I wanted to save it on my phone or as a Google contact (or automatically save it to whichever of those two I had told it to do by default.) Saving it as a Google contact automatically synced it to my Google account.
When I set up my HTC 10, it downloaded all of my Google contacts. Easy!
Tonight, when somebody texted me they got a new number, I went to change it on a contact that already exists; it asked which contact I wanted to edit: their phone contact or their Google contact. Changing their Google contact didn't update the phone contact.
So then I just deleted his contact, and created it anew; it only asks if I want to create it on the phone or on the SIM card, with no Google contact option. Furthermore, creating it on the phone doesn't sync it to Google, nor does creating it on Google sync it to the phone.
Is there something I'm missing here? Is this some HTC specific thing where it just doesn't do Google contacts? Any help on this would be much, much appreciated; I'd really only rather maintain the Google contacts and not have to micromanage contact lists or use a third party syncing app (but I guess I will if it comes to it).
NEVER MIND!
You can ignore me.
For whatever reason, "contacts" wasn't available to check in my sync settings. But I fixed it:
Removed my Google account
Deleted all local phone contacts (to avoid possible duplicates later)
Added my Google account again
"Contacts" is in the Sync settings again, re-synced all my contacts without problems.
No idea what caused it but there you go. I thought I was going crazy because I had no option to sync contacts. If anybody knows what may have caused it I'd be interested to hear, but otherwise just ignore this post :-/
Thank you! I had the same problem and couldn't add contacts to my Google list. I did the same (logged out of account and logged back in) and the sync contacts came back along with the ability to add contacts again. I wonder why that happened.
I'm having similar issues with my HTC 10, majority of my contacts are synced on my Gmail account but I'm missing about 4 numbers, the contact details are there like name but no phone number. I've checked my phone and the contact has a phone number and linked to other accounts like whatsapp but no info on Gmail contacts.
I did manually input the number onto my phone because the numbers was missing so I believe maybe it's the format on the HTC 10, I'll do more testing...
sync google accounts
It's been a while since I've been through this, but unfortunately I have a similar problem. My problem is "Google account" in accounts and sync. But I can only select google photos when I click on the sync mark. No selection box for contacts. How can I fix that?
The device has clone s3 and ics 4.0.4 on it. The gapps packages available for this release also do not work. It does not synchronize people in any case. I cleaned the data from the applications, I deleted Accounts.db and reinstalled it.
Finally, I found the following lines for Accounts.xml and added it, but still there is no positive situation. What else can I do? Thank you.
Syncable = "true"> <authority id = "3" account = ".." type = "com.google" authority = "com.android.contacts"
<PeriodicSync period = "86400" />
</ Authority>

Halo !!!
I have same trouble with sync on my htc 10, but I think the problem is not only in the phone, because I have the same google account on another phone, ( alcatel idol 3) and also the same problems with contacts. For example, a sudden disappearance, a certain number of contacts, from my contacts list in both phone ???? On htc 10, a special problem is synchronization is not always possible, I have auto sync on, but the contacts cant be synced when I want to do, but in follow a few days thay are.
That,s whot i do not understand, I tried cleaning cash, and re-installing Google Account, but the problem comes back after a while, so..thats it. If anyone knows something more, would like to here. Thanks !!!
If Power Saver mode is enabled, Contacts Sync is disabled. Sounds crazy but just disable Power Saver (on HTC it's under Settings->Power->Power saver) and the contact sync will start right up. No need to remove and recreate your google account, restart the phone, or any of that - just flip the one switch.
