So I know that the Inc comes with VVM but I don't really want to pay for a month service if I don't have too.
Second I know Google Voice does a decent job with visual voice mail but I'm looking for something to use with the phone number on my phone not a new number.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try out? I'm more curious if it's a useful feature or more of just a waste of time. I've heard of YouMail but I haven't found very many good reviews on it.
Any suggestions for apps are greatly appreciated or of course if you think it's not even worth trying out I'll take that too.

Use Google voice. It does exactly what you want, with your current number.

I've used youmail.com on my droid and 2 blackberries in the past, i love it. it doesn't do transcription for free, but everything else is. and you can block specific people from leaving your messages if you want.

I just re-downloaded Google Voice for my Android. I tried it a few months back but installed a new ROM and never reinstalled it.
I decided I wanted to be able to use my Google Voice number again so I re-downloaded it and when I went to set it up, Google Voice tells me they have partnered with Sprint and it's asking me if I want to do the fully intergrated install for Sprint OR the standard Google Voice install.
What is the difference?
I've waited to set it up because I don't want it to take over my phone until I know what I'm getting myself into!

Maybe if I tell you guys WHAT I want GVoice for, you can tell me what option to use.
I want to use Google voice to hide my Sprint number. I want to be able to give out a number that people CAN call me on, without them knowing my real Sprint number, and if I return their calls, I only want them to see my GVoice number.
I also like the idea of being able to block numbers in GVoice so the caller thinks my number is no longer in service which I see you can do.

If you ibtergrate with sprint, your sprint telephone number can be used as your google number! One number for both.
If you want to use a seperate number for google then do this.
1. Log into google voice from computer.
2. Click on your number in top right hand corner.
3. Select phones
4. Deactivate google voice on your number.
Done!!! 2 numbers.

So then it completely defeats the purpose of using Google Voice? Everyone I know uses Google Voice to mask their cellphone providers number.
Everyone I know uses it to be anonymous. I mean I know Google knows what your real number is so like you wouldn't want to call in any bomb threats but everyone I know uses Google Voice as a disposable number. For example, bill collectors or Craigslist ads etc.
If you intergrate you may also use your google number as your number. Sorry for not explaining that!

When you install, choose use my google number and callers will see your google number. You can always change this.

OK so what does the integration do exactly then because I can use my Google Voice number without integrating and just doing the standard setup.
I'm kinda lost as to what it does exactly. Like what the point it.
Your google number is a landline, so if you intergrate, your cell makes the call but shows the landline nuber, as opposed to calling ftom the google number without intergration wich uses landline minutes!!

So if if you dont have the simply everything plan and intergrate your caller id just displays your google voice wich saves landline minutes because your calling from your cell and displaying your google number.

Im in the same boat as the OP. I just reinstalled CM7 from scratch & when I installed GV, I had the same options.
I really just use GV for the voicemail integration. I wouldnt mind being able to setup custom greetings for family members, I guess the text being saved on google is a good thing (though a little scary).
I just dont get what the point of it is if I already have a GV number (which I dont use except for voicemail).
I just dont see the benefit of porting except for the GV being the one stop phone number I give out with some blocking features.
My bigger concern is if I wanted to leave GV or sprint, how that gets handled, or what rights i am signing over to google on my information.
Any ideas on where to find more info?

You have to pay to keep your GVoice number, though.
Integration is great for those of us who want the GVoice features (texting and voicemail from the app and web) without a separate GVoice number that everyone has to learn. I love having access to my texts from a browser, and can call people from my netbook and it shows up as my cell number.
Yes, you can do that without integration too, but this way I didn't have to teach everyone a new number. I've had my mobile number for over six years now; I don't want to get a new one.
What happens if you leave sprint? Does Google 'own' your voicemails? Does your texts go through the native app, or in the google voice app?

You can de-integrate your number. I imagine that Google would give you another Google number at that point.
I have messaging completely disabled on my phone(even the vzw free text messages dont come through). I was wondering, if i use an app like Handcent SMS, will that work by itself? Will i incur messaging charges?
Also, i heard you can email a msg to a phone # by doing something like:
mailto:[email protected]?.com
if its to a verizon cust for instance, what would i put after the @? is it vtext.com, vzwpix.com, ???
I have been on google voice for a little over 2 years. And with that haven't been paying for any text plans, since then. Your best best is to incorporate that, either by using a number u can pick through what google offers in google voice as you se it up(painfully easy)

Take the better but...harder route. (Which I did)
If u are out of contract...port your number and give it to google voice. Tell ur cell provider u need it for business voicemail reasons. And for you to receive a new one from them. Then for the rest of your cellular life u will never have to worry about paying for text and BONUS ever have to tell any one u got a new number...because now it will always be in google voice..and u can connect that number with anything!

I still always think of doing it though.
Another alternative is to use a app named textfree, it will provide you with a new number and unlimited texting.

well said, i agree on you with that. but this is too big. many people use it. it is so heavily implemented that it would be simply BAFFLING if they would. besides, there would be plenty of options in the event they did (free porting out, refunds, etc)
either way. i doubt it. smart phones have made this a number one bonus , the new york times wrote an article just last month on the death of text payment

You wouldn't be able to use Handcent or the like since they are just a GUI overlay to the stock texting app. You would have to use an independent messaging program like Google Voice which was mentioned above and I've heard a good number of success stories with it (not necessarily the porting your number part).
To answer your other question you can email any cell phone and it will go through as an MMS. Every carrier has their own email domain for it that a Google search will give you. For Verizon it would be [email protected].

I use Google Voice exclusively. It has visual voicemail and it also lets you text/call from your computer which is a huge time saver.
I was trying to use google voice but I couldn't get it to validate.
google voice is great, I had issues getting it to work until I created a new google voice number instead of just a fowarding/voice mail number and then added the device through the web platform. It has worked ever since.
There is no build in visual voicemail for android afaik. Apple came up with their own protocol for that. As for 3rd party options, there is google voice like everybody mentioned but if you can't/don't want to use google voice then there are some apps on the market which require you to forward your unanswered calls to their number. There is always the privacy issue though which is why I do not use them.
I use Google voice on Verizon there's a YouTube video that I followed and work very well. Just go to your Google/voice.com and get a Google voice number and set it up like that.

To use Google Voice for voice mail you have to enable conditional call forwarding. For Verizon this is as easy as dialing *71 and then the 10 digit number. For Sprint I don't think it is that easy. You may want to call their customer care. Hopefully you can get it working, I'm not sure I could live without mine.

PF Voicemail+ it's free on the market and I've been using since the OG Droid days. It's perfect. I like the fact that it'll let you play the voicemail either over speaker or through the actual headset. Try it out :O

I use google voice. It is not the best at transcribing the voicemail, but you can play, pause, and delete right from the app.

Based on reading this thread, as well as some other looking around I have done, it seems the only real options for free VVM are Google Voice, Youmail, or Visual Voicemail Plus.
I cannot use Google Voice. Not that I don't like it. I love using GV. However, my cell number is tied to the GV account that I use for work, so that I basically have a dual line cell phone (my VZW Number for normal stuff and the GV number for work stuff). With that, I cannot give my cell number to another GV account to get VoiceMail.
The market reviews for both YouMail and Visual Voicemail Plus leave much to be desired. Seems that for every review that says it is great, is a review that says it is crap. But, most people just review the app when it is causing issues, so it is not always a great idea to put stake in reviews. Wondering what the opinion is of people here.

What is it? is like like a google phone number with free text and free minutes?
I've never used it because i thought you have to pay for minutes and text.
Oh and this may or may not help but i have everything unlimited 1500minute plan on sprint
Also, what are the advantages to having this over just regular Sprint voice mail/text/calling?

As the saying goes, Google is your friend. IMO, voicemail is great feature, using gv for calls blows because of the frequent delay in audio (which makes you talk over each other), and I prefer to not integrate gv with sprint. I paid for my number so I don't want to lose it by integration. I do wish there was a better way to tell that a call is coming in from your gv number without losing caller id.
Security wise...from a haunting perspective pretty slim because Google logs everything. With those logs, they are there forever. +Who else has their hands in the cookie jar to grab whatever info they want?
In industries where people deal with high profile clients or heck even in the financial sector where information is vital, it wouldn't feel very secure knowing that your communication is being logged...
Therefore, what other more secure options are available for having a (mask) number, sms and online vm feature?
The main thing is, to all the fellow Note 3 users, do you trust GV?

What's nice is that you have the same phone number for life and no need to worry about porting phone numbers from one carrier to another. Plus its free. Only issue is the voicemail sucks.

Very true..I've been using GV just for that reason...I've changed my number 3 times in the past 2 years...but kept the same GV.

Between using GV for ages since before Google bought it & the service was known as GrandCentral. I've trusted it completely & have no issues.

I also have used GV for several years, one of the nicest features I use it for is when I'm at home and someone calls me on my mobile, I hit ignore and it transfers it to my Land line. Very cool. Been using it for over five years!
I use Google voice for my work calls, texts and voicemails. This way only the people I want to have my personal number get that.

That rumor was also heard last year, and the year before. Not saying it won't happen, but I quit caring.
I use Google voice with an obihai. Works great. You can still forward and answer from cell and all that, but I haven't paid for a land line in years. All you do is sign in from work if you want to use it elsewhere.
As far as security goes, you are subject to being monitored whenever you are suspected of wrong doing, no matter which carrier you choose. And for that matter, VoIP is what all the major carriers use now anyways.
If you are strictly speaking from a standpoint of being spammed and site recommendations based on growing history, etc... Than you can just create a generic Google account and assign the number to that one, while still enjoying the other Google account (this is what I did to keep my g voice and personal phone separate).
