Hey everyone. I was using the camera app the other day, and it got me thinking that it would be incredibly convenient and practical to be able to use the volume rocker to take pictures instead of the optical trackpad. I've done a bit of searching, and I haven't seen anything about this in the Incredible forum, so if anyone has a solution or idea, feel free to let me know!
I agree. The optical jog is terrible. Almost impossible to hold the camera steady and use it.

Ditto.
Maybe even be able to rotate the camera app so the volume buttons are in the traditional location of the shutter button.
its like one of three things i miss about my blackberry storm. the camera button, the way that profiles and settings were consolidated into one space, and batch actions for messages (delete all, mark all unread, etc)
i hope that someone comes up with something for this. especially allowing camera to rotate would be great.

I've see much vids of Desire but none of them reveal the capabilities of the new joystick. What are its functions, is it more close to joystick or a trackpad?
its like the trackball of the other android devices, just optical -> u can slide over it....and if u hold your finger on the optic sensor u can klick with it, somebody said in a video that u'll get hardware feedback when using the optical joy

Yeah I saw that vid. Simple swiping and clicking can be done with touch screen either. A demonstration of more precise operations is needed.

A real joystick or a real trackpad allows much more than swiping and clicking.
For example, you can hold a joystick direction to trigger autorepeat or make really fast movements without taking finger off.
it's an optical trackball, for want of a better term.
In the same way that you get optical mice as opposed to a mouse with a ball in the bottom. The optical trackpad is simply an optical version of the scroll ball... in other words, same functions as the regular scroll ball without the moving parts.

This is what I want too.
Dont want my big thumbs messing up the whole screen.
I look forward to the optical tracking system. I suppose it may be because I don't play action style games. I'm more of a puzzle/cards kind of guy. There are very few times I play phone games any how.
Actually i can't see the optical version making more sense, than the mechanical.
I personally almost never use it.
I believe its main uses would be as a hardware camera-button (that is, for taking the photo), and to scroll in text when typing.
Yep....Useless....I use my trackball about once every couple of days. Touch here and touch there is much faster... Oh wait I use it whenever I install a new ROM.. Just checking the threads trying to find something.

That's why desire is good, no trackball sticking out! Nice and small button with optical tracking ;-)
Can it be used like the N1 trackball for missed calls and sms??
Blinking lights I mean
Just to answer a couple of questions:
1) There is no notification light on the optical trackpad.
2) I've tried this with the Nesoid emulator and while it works, it's pretty terrible to use for directional control, but maybe OK for any games that require 'swiping' motions.

Hi There,
It does support Multitouch, but it is pretty fiddly, I think because the image of the onscreen d-pad and buttons to not line up exactly on the Desire with Nesoid. I have had more luck with the multitouch using Snesoid, which feels very good! (i.e, in Super Mario All-Stars I can run and jump at the same time)
Hey
I was holding my phone, taking some pictures and I though to myself, wouldn't it be a lot better if the volume up or down key could be used as a shutter release button, rather that the stiff, hard to press trackpad.
Now my question is, is it TECHNICALY posible to do this?
Is there anyway to "map" thoses keys to do something else but just in the camera app?
If you think it is possible, then I might try to document myself and hack this into the desire.
But if you are positive that it is impossible then ... I won't ^^
Bye
I'm not sure if you know that you can touch the screen for a half a second or so and then let go (wherever you want to focus) to take a picture by default already ?
Yes I know that, it was the same on the hero. The thing is, the phone focuses on whatever you are pointing at so you have to get your hand in an ackward, shacky position in order to focus on the right object/region.
On the other hand, the sound up button is easily accesible and can easily be pressed without shaking the phone to much. I going to read through the Android doc, si if I can find anything.
This would be even more awesome as the sound up/down buttons arent used for anything in the camera app
I totally agree. That would be the best way to reduce camera shake. You would get a significantly higher sharp picture ratio this way.

Would it be somehow possible to decompile the HTC camera apk and had code to it?
I don't find the trackpad a hard to press button, in fact it's nicer than camera phones I've had in the past.
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f44/app-to-remap-physical-keys-28868/
Over here someone mentions 'Button Shortcut' on the market, haven't tried it myself but if it does what they say it does, it might be exactly what you're looking for.
EDIT: Also just from reading through this thread again, are you guys holding the camera with the trackpad button on the left? Try holding it the other way (if you're right handed).
I had found that thread before posting this question (yes I did do research beleive it or not), has it turns out it is not relevant to what I want to do.
I am holding the phone the way the camera app wants you to hold it, hence trackpad on the right. The trackpad isn't hard to press per se, but the amount of pressure you have to use to press it means that the phone is more shacky than if you had to press the volume key.
This sounds like a very good idea. Keep us posted if you find anything.
Yes, I agree with all of your aforementioned points.

I was looking around the forum and noticed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464 It's called ButtonRemapper. It's in Beta and it should work for your purpose if your phone is one of the supported devices and is Fully Rooted.
I too agree with all mentioned issues/drawbacks at the present and possible benefit of using vol-up key for taking photos. There are already some apps giving user a similar option to change vol rocker buttons functionality for instance some browsers have this option to scroll up-down pages whilst some keyboard apps have it to move cursor upper-lower lines within a text. You dont need to root to use those apps. So, why not?

Is there any possebility? It drives me crazy when you try to take a picture of a friend and yourself!
I searched a whole lot, but this "Big Button Camera" App that is out there replaces the normal camera and its not free.
If there would be an App that lays the Shutter on volume Down or Up during camera mode, that would be great! I can zoom (if I need it) on screen...
what did HTC think?

For making pictures of yourself you can use the self-portrait function. The phone then sees your face in the frame and takes a picture. Works quite good.

Yep ... it's awesome.
Face recognition doesn't always work for me.
Another alternative is to set a delay on the photo. Gives you time to position the camera before the picture is taken. Not sure why HTC have only given two options - 2 secs and 10 secs - though...
Try this works very well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464&highlight=desire

Power button, no. There are ways to use the volume keys or the search button, however they require root and a custom rom.

That was my first thought too.
I too would like something to make my volume buttons a shutter button when the camera is activated. Self pics are a nightmare when you have to try to push the screen when it's turned away from you. I'm rooted running Chogardjr v3.12 on an Evo 4G if it matters.

Not everyone on this board acts like a two year old in the real world.
I actually use the phone to log track sessions on a dashboard mount in my car. The video screen always on can be distracting.
The shutter button is a no brainer. The touch screen button is a PITA to use since you have to hold the camera a certain way to take any picture.
Thanks for your lack of help, Ill search around for some apps.
Just got this Galaxy, amazing phone and whatnot, and installed wicked rom.
Tried all three camera's (GE, stock, moto) and none seem to auto focus right before a snapshot. It only auto focuses while the camera is active not right before taking it its own and this causes me to take blurry pictures (I have horrible steady hands). Basically it focuses only before I click the snap button I want it to do it automatically after I click it.
My old E4GT however does it and it is one thing I loved about it. It would take a second to capture the picture but it would take it in perfect focus because it would automatically detect it right before the shot after I click the snap button.
Any ideas on how I can add that feature to this phone?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Mine auto focus after I hit the "snap" button. I'm on Infamous S4 V4 ROM so I can't speak for Wicked. It shouldn't be any different IMO. Maybe play around with the settings.
I just hold on to the snap button for about a second and that focuses it really good, and that takes really good quality picture.
The camera on the s4 is not as quick to take sharp pictures as my note 2 other s3. I've just learned to tap the screen to focus first before taking a pic. Or I just tap n hold on the screen for a few seconds and once I let go it takes a pic automatically

I'll try that ROM because this is really irritating how my S2 takes better pictures than my S4.
And even stock rom auto focus before you hit the snap not after which is really weird.

I believe I've noticed that if you hold the camera directed towards the focus of your shot for say, 5 to 7 seconds, although delayed, it will adjust by auto-focusing SLIGHTLY. Not as good as just tap on the area of the screen that you want focused.

He is saying he wants it to re-focus AFTER the shutter button is pressed before it actually captures the photo. So the process would go like this:
1. Camera opens
2. Point at subject
3. Auto focus on subject to frame the shot
4. Press shutter button
5. Re-focus
6. Capture image
Plenty of cameras out there do this, and as pointed out, ours do it when the flash is on. They will vary the amount of light from the flash and lens focus simultaneously to capture the best picture quality.
I don't see why it doesn't do this either, my old HTC did the re-focus after the shutter button thing and you get much more clear photos. I sometimes have to try a couple times doing close up shots of things like text on identification tags (so I don't have to write numbers down) with my phone myself, and I have "normal" steadiness hands.

Okay, you want it to focus once, then after its already focused, focus again? Really? Thats kind of defeating the point. You already have focus on the subject why would you need focus on it again? That makes taking pictures much longer a process. However, if it doesn't have focus already, and you press the shutter button, then it takes focus again. But i have no issues taking crystal clear pics unless i accidentally move while its snapping the pic. But the way it focuses now is normal and how it should be. Focusing twice is really pointless..
The OP was asking, not me, and he said he has shaky hands which is why he misses this feature. It only takes a fraction of a second for the camera to do anyway. A lot of phone cameras do this already and you don't notice it. Heck, most hand held digital cameras focus before capturing the image AFTER you press the shutter button.

Lol i wasn't trying to point fingers or anything lol. I am just extremely confused, if my phone doesn't have focus and i press the shutter button, it focuses then takes the pic. but if it does auto focus before i press the shutter button, and i move then immediately press the shutter button, it will refocus.. so i am extremely confused as to what the OP wants..
isn't this marketed as a "feature" called zero shutter lag? I use procapture the majority of the time and it focuses after clicking the shutter.
