[Q] GPS not working after manual OTA update to 2.2 - Desire General

HI all, I am new to android
Followed the excellent tutorials in this forum and upgraded to 2.2 using a file downloaded directly from a HTC link (sorry cant find right now)
Everything is superb but the gps cant get a fix. It has been a few days and I tried various things like restarts, remove battery, clear sky, leave google maps running for long, checked it is enabled in settings etc.
What to do?
What should be the correct version information after the 2.2 update? (in case i installed a beta/incomplete version)
Please help this new droid get back on its feet

I am sorry I have no solution, but I have the same issue. This has nothing to do with 2.2 I think, because it happened all of a sudden. At least it felt like it happened jus like that. I have been using 2.2 for a long time and used GPS. Only recently I noticed the issue.

from my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7773080&postcount=9
It worked for me! I went to the roof as today is a bright day and used Tricorder app's Geo tab. Touched on it to show satellite.
It kept trying to connect to satellite. The tricorder app shows some satellites as green. Presumably as they are chosen to calculate location. It didn't finally lock-on till it was showing 12 satellites and 4 of them were green. I noticed that I had to remove the jelly cover and :
1. Stand still, she how many satellites it shows signals. In a few seconds it will stop detecting new ones.
2. It it hasn't locked on then move around a bit and change some orientation then step 2 again
3. Repeat above till it latches to atleast 4 green or 12 total signals (dont know which one works the 12 signals or 4 green)
and after that it easily updates even indoors for me.

I usually get a fix in the first minute, usually under 30 seconds. But this time no satellites were showing, not even after 15 minutes. I switched roms and it's working fine again.
I think I must have messed up something by reflashing multiple times. (I was trying to get the bios boot image to work, but sadly no avail )

I've just updated to voda standard 2.2 rom OTA this morning
1st thing I've noticed is the gps is a no go, no sats in view at all.
(using gps test the 'on button' only stays yellow too)
I've not 'messed' with my phone at all other than the standard updates
I must admit I've not tried a hard reset yet but I think that's going to be the last hopeful resort otherwise it's going back for a replacement

[Q] GPS problems. Can't get a fix!

Hi all,
I have the Desire HD for 2 weeks now but I've only yesterday noted the gps doesn't seem to work... It's a complete stock model, no custom roms or radio's. I'ts just never able to get a fix! Are there other people with problems like this? Could my device be broken?
I have installed a app from the market that tests the gps and it finds no satelites most of the time except one time I checked it found 4 with a very bad signal... Even then in Google Maps or the HTC Locations it didn't get a fix.
Any ideas?
Bump! I have exactly the same problem. Any Advice?
same problem
i HAD this problem, but then i left the GPS on for an entire journey. 45 minutes later it had a fix and ive never had any problems getting a fix within a minute since.
i dont think the phone knows what side of the globe its on the first time, so maybe it just needs a loooong time the first time.
Most GPS devices need to download a file known as an almanac. This determines where satellites will be at specified times.
This file can take a while to download as GPS is purely passive. I'm not sure if the DHD is A-GPS (Assisted). This will download the almanac via mobile or wifi data.
This is why sometimes the first GPS lock can take a while.
Try these two programs:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-status-toolbox/com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-test/com.chartcross.gpstest
First one is great for diagnostic so it should tell you what is wrong.
I also have the same problem, been driving for about 30mins and nothing..

1st gps-fix is a pain, after it will all get better....search for my posts, you'll see that this has been asked several times (don't want to be a b**ch but, please use the search button as well) and in general, 1st fix takes some time, 2nd is fast (like <2 min).
At this moment, while I thought my gps fix was very bad (and as I own one, if not the, of the 1st DHD batches, it was not abnormal to think that it also had gps probs) it now fixes within 1 minute....
Problematic piece of device for me for GPS.
Got mine a cpl of days ago , downloaded the apps above but still nothing i will give it one more try.

I tried both GPS apps. And immediately after that, I was able to get GPS satellite lock on within 20s.
Guys regarding the GPS, all of us we face an issue. It can not lock the satellites quickly. Especially for the people like me who are HTC HD2 owners as well. I was waiting only few seconds. (cooked rom). We MUST forget that now. It's an issue for all of the android devices. Even with the device of the Nexus. So we must live with that. Sometimes it will lock the satellites in 1 min or 30 secs, some other time in 2-3 mins. I searched also in the internet and i found so many complains regarding the GPS and hopefully not only from DHD users

Yep, I had also that problem but then red at forums that only way to lock as fast as you can satellite is to use first one for locking over internet and after that it's much easier to find satellite. Whenever you have problem with locking or need gps asap first program should provide you with fast satellite find.
Btw gps on dhd is so good that I have sold my old garmin - simply it's obsolete and now I have only to purchase official car holder.
Most of the times is more difficult to get a fix in a speeding car.
In the opposite case is generally faster to get a sat fix.
So I've been using my DHD for 3 weeks now (stock model as well, no root) and here are two issues with GPS that I noticed and have no idea what to do with it.
1. The same problem as described in first post. Every once in a while my GPS just cannot get a fix. I installed GPS Test app. Normally it finds around 6-7 satellites, they are all in use, the yellow indicator in GPS status bar goes green and my location appears on mini-map.
However there are situations when GPS Test says that there is 1 to 5 satelites in view, later on they also apper to be in use, but GPS status doesn't change to green and my actual location doesn't show. It's not a problem of visibility or my location - the GPS can get a fix today and not work tomorrow at the very same place.
I have no idea if this can be fixed, so any help appreciated.
2. This is not really an issue, just something that I find quite disturbing. I'm using this traffic app (Yandex Maps for those of you in Russia). It shows current traffic condition on the map + your current location if you have GPS. So each time I lock my DHD (press the button on the top) the GPS is immedietly switched off. So when I unlock the screen to see the map again it takes from few seconds to a minute or even more to update my current position. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all (see problem #1). I understand it's probably done to save battery but I would prefer continuously working GPS than saving battery. Is there any way to set GPS to always working mode?
Thanks in advance to everyone who can help. Cheers
Hi,
I read all you guys said and after trying both the apps and refreshing my agps data manually I now get 6-7 satellites which is good I think?
So for all of you with the same problem, just stay outside for a moment and make sure you have a data-connection. Then use the GPS Status app and refresh your agps data manually. It should work... It did for me!
Ps. I think my Desire, not the HD, used to see 11 satellites? Is that possible? Does this mean 6-7 is kind of weak?

Just to make it clear - to manually refresh AGPS using GPS Status - you need to go to Menu->Tools->Manage A-GPS state->Download?
I'm not outside now, but will try it once I have problems getting a fix.
And yes, 11 sats is possible. 6-7 is more than enough though.
Stand still to get a fix? Harder when you are speedy, I think.

Your movement speed has no impact on how quickly you get a lock. Remember, these satellites are in orbit traveling alot faster than your 30 - 70mph.

GPS reboot issues

Hi there,
Now I've come across a few threads that mention reboot issues. However mine seem to be almost unique.
The biggest thread I came across was more along the lines of overheating.
Everything on my phone functions normally. GPRS / 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth (I think, never use it!).
First issue: GPS takes FOREVER to lock. A good ten minutes, at least. Whether I sit and wait for it to lock or just start driving. Makes no difference.
GPS eventually locks. A good 20 minutes (give or take a few minutes) in, and bang. Reboot.
My first thought was the radio. I was running the very latest one (in the radio thread). I downgraded. I tried 4 older radio's. Each previous one improving the stability. However all except the latest only keep the GPS working for around 20 minutes after locking.
This morning I flashed the oldest radio (first post of the radio thread, oldest one there).
Results in my testing on the way home are quite different. After 20ish minutes I didn't get a boot loop. NDrive went crazy, and stopped navigating. I restarted the app and the GPS refused to lock.
I had installed CatLog some time ago. In my early experimenting, I ran the logging while driving. It seemed to have prevented a reboot but instead created circumstances like above where the GPS stopped working mid-navigating.
I'm running Pays DHD Rom. When navigating its running on battery alone. Temps don't go above 35 degrees Celcius. My phone is rooted, s-off'd as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Short of un-rooting, finding a stock like 2.2 ROM and turning S-on and sending it back to the shop I bought it from, I don't know what to do
Thanks.
In my personal experience all GPS receivers loose sensitivity over time. Some go off faster other stay fine for a few years. If it takes that long for your GPS receiver to lock it is most likely caused by lost sensitivity and no ROM will fix this. The very last thing you can try is to download one of the GPS manager apps and perform a full wipe of the GPS data followed by GPS cold start. It should lock within 2 minutes. Otherwise install a stock ROM and apply for warranty repair.

Agreed. Definitely not the rom. I installed cm7 and damn its a great rom but the problem persists.
I downloaded one of those GPS apps. When soft resetting it rebooted my phone sad days.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
So I've pretty much given up.
Tomorrow its going back to where I've gotten it from.
After downloading the stock RUU (first Eclair and then Froyo. Lets just say Eclair didn't like my phone at all) and getting it on the phone, I'm finished.
The moment I turn on GPS... instant reboot!
If you ever have troubles like this, don't waste your time, just take it back!

[Q] New to gio

Hi,
First post, feels like I'm a little late to the party. I have a gio which initially had gingerbread 2.3.3. The phone is unlocked, and rooted, and has the clock work mod recovery patch on it. I have tried a couple of different versions of gingerbread, and am now running ice cream sandwich: kernel 2.6.35-7-galaxyics, CyanogenMod version build 9-20120610-UNOFFICIAL-gio, build number IMM76L.
Firmware-wise, it's mostly good, but I'm having a couple of weird issues:
1. The screen goes black on me periodically, and won't come back without pushing the on/off button. This is happening every 30 to 60 seconds of use.
2. The wifi crashes, a lot. With the older gingerbread I would get the word "error" under wifi in settings, and couldn't turn it back on. I would enter *#*#526#*#* to bring it back, but every 5 minutes seems a little excessive.
With the newer ICS, I've noticed I can play on a wifi link all day long without issue, but as soon as I set the phone down for a couple of minutes, wifi stops working. If I go into settings, wifi is on, but there's no connection. If I turn wifi off and back on, it comes back to life.
I guess, I'm wondering if these indicate more of a hardware issue than a software issue. It's hard to ask for support from my carrier, given I'm using an unlocked phone bought from a 3rd party, and have no contract.

And welcome !

Errors that you describe has a lot of people
The team is now working on ICS AOSP so be patient wait a little meringue as soon
And yet you propose to install something else that any CM
In total there is this quite a bit
update
A couple of things I've noticed:
1. The resetting wifi problem does not happen when the phone is plugged into USB.
2. The screen turning off happens frequently, but about 1/2 of the time, the screen will turn off for 1-2 seconds, then come back on at full brightness; the rest of the time, it will not come back on at all, but still responds to being tapped. The only way to get it back is to push the on/off button on the side twice, but then the screen is locked, and has to be swiped to unlock.
I have picked up a second phone, a 5660M running stock gingerbread 2.3.4, unlocked and rooted; not experiencing either of the two above issues (and the camera preview works). If I could take the 5660 back to stock at this point, I would prefer that, as the phone is not usable with these problems. Is there a stock rom available for this phone somewhere?
update part II
Hmm, after the phone showed up with 2.3.3 claiming to be a gt-s5660, and was sold as such, I finally put 1 & 1 together. I checked under the battery, it's a gt-s5660m. That explains probably all of the problems I've been having. Pity there's no ICS build for the M version of the phone.
You can use cm9 ics on your M model, it only changes your device id to gt-s5660, just dont flash roms with ODIN except roms for the M model.
Flashing from recovery wont install a baseband, with ODIN it mostly does, so the only roms you cant flash are old roms that still need odin like gioprio.
Flashable .zips are fine, all of them

The wifi problem might be hardware, m8
I don't know, as my gio has some strange problems as well and I've had ICS, Adrenaline ROMs, everything, and the problems still persist. At least they're not really bad to handle in everyday use but still, they're annoying.
Go to wifi settings - advanced - sleep policy- never

update part III
Since going back to GINGERBREAD.MUGKG3 / 2.3.4 for the GT-S5660M, the wifi crashing and screen blanking behaviours have completely stopped. After two days of running, wifi has not shut-off unexpectedly even once, and the screen does not blank any more at all.
The gps works now; it was not before. It used to sit for up to an hour under a clear open sky, day or night, and never acquire a single satellite. Now it picks them up within 30-60 seconds, though a full lock does take a couple of minutes.
The phone previously always indicated it was roaming, and would frequently refuse to send texts or make calls. I would get full bars for signal strength, but no connectivity.
I even got hold of the fm radio app, which was not included with the M version of the 5660, and manually installed it (phone must be rooted, and file system must be mounted read/write). It works too; a nice bonus.
The camera works, but is a bit flaky, requiring an occasional restart to get it going.
Probably the biggest headache, after flashing back to the 5660M version, was that the phone locked itself again, and wouldn't work on my network. I dumped bml5 page and searched out the unlock code. I had some trouble with this. The search string to get close to the code is supposed to be a sequence of twenty 0x00 bytes, one 0x05 byte, and fourteen 0xff bytes. The 0xff bytes weren't there, and it took a while for me to clue in that if I searched on the twenty 0x00, and single 0x05 byte sequence, I could still pull it out. I got it, and wrote it down in case this happens again.
sms issue
Still ticking along with the GT-S5660M; mostly it's all working nicely. I have one question though: I recently ran out of memory for storing SMS messages. It looks like the texting app in the phone wants to put everything on the SIM card rather than on the SD card, but there's no option for moving the default storage location for messages. Is there a simple way to do this? The phone is unlocked & rooted, but does not have the ext2 file system on it.
What's the IC? I checked under the battery to confirm mine is a Canada model, and it is.
But my IC is GT-S5660L

Nexus 7 LTE Deb Multitouch and GPS issue

Hi anyone experiencing multitouch and/or GPS issues?
My friend is in Canada and just bought one for me. She's coming back to Singapore in 2 weeks and is helping me test it first in Canada. The unit prompted to update when started up which she did. I'm waiting for her to reply me what build it is at now.
I told her to download the Yet Another Multitouch Test and she tried dragging her fingers around. With a single finger a red blob follows her finger around but sometimes a blue blob appears right next to it briefly. With 2 fingers, when she was dragging 2 fingers around a green blob appeared a few cm away once. She did say she noticed sometimes using it normally that it was a bit unresponsive/slow.
For the GPS, I wasn't sure how to test it. I got her to use either maps or GPS Status and Toolbox. The first time she said it looked like the gps fix was ok for 45minutes (in maps). She DID NOT REBOOT and it managed to relock. The 2nd time was on GPS Status 18 minutes. The 3rd time the fix lasted for 19 minutes. But after that one, the 4th time it couldn't find a lock even after waiting more than an hour. She was testing it indoors so I asked her to leave the gps status toolbox on while driving to have a better test. Anyone experienced this? I thought that the GPS issue was such that once you lost the status, you couldn't get it back without reboot. But my friend said the relock was successful at least twice (indoors).
I also told her to try clearing the AGPS data and refresh data using the GPS Status and Toolbox, she will try that later.

I had the GPS issue that was fixed with a software update. Prior to the update, when I tried to use Waze or Google navigation, it would lose the GPS lock within 15 minutes, often sooner. After the update, I have never lost GPS lock during navigation. My longest drives are about 2 hours. Tell your friend to test it during a long drive, but if you got the software update, you should be all set.
I can't comment regarding the multi touch issue, I haven't noticed any such problems on either of my N7 tablets (WiFi, and LTE), and haven't tested for it.

multitouch problem seems very common, since I have read a lot of complaint related to the touch screen, I checked my screen as soon as I got it , and tested with Antutu which is a universal test tool, the result was frustrating as well-- UPPER PART of the screen functions insensitively compared to the lower part. It is a hardware malfunction clearly. What the hell did Asus react to it? We'll wait and see.

Well update..my friend brought the nexus 7 out for a drive. Just a normal journey, not a long one. Am I right in saying the ones with problems cannot relock without rebooting and if mine can relock without reboot it means it's got normal working GPS?
Also, the build (after the initial update) is JLS36C. Which according to this Deb thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448352 should be the latest I think.

NEXUS 7 2013 Big GPS SOFTWARE issue / no Fix

after a loooot of search on the internet and after reading all the older posts here i am desperate and i am opening here a thread. Thats my last hope that someone found a solution to this issue.
So 6 months ago i bought a nexus 7 2013 wifi for a car project. i wanted to use it as multimedia and navigation system. After i modified my car (see pic. / contact me in case of interesst or advices)
https://postimg.org/image/exyp7da37/
everything was nice i was happy with the result. The problem starts when i wanted to use the navigation...
The device cant find a satelite, searching for gps signal is the only message i see. 9/10 the gps cant find satelite. One or two times it found the signal after one hour or more..
My thoughts:
1. The case is causing this issues... the tablet charges wireless and is kept in place with magnets so i can remove it in a second.
I am trying with the "naked" tablet outside with directly sky view... no change.
2. The backcover is modified with 2 small metal plates in order to get magnetizied with the magnets installed in the car dush.
i tried an other backcover.. no change.
3. I tought it is a software issue.... i was using Cyanogenmod 13 with elemental X... installed the original software / Android 6. Without any other installations only GPS Status... still no signal.. I installed android 5.0.1 ... still no signal.
4. i used various of settings changes and apps ( GPS FIX, GPS Doctor, GPS Status) ... the gps android settings are the the most accurate level. Still no change..
created the data/gps/ folder with the permissions rwxrwxr-x. Still no change.
After all that and after reading that there are many people out there with the same problem i thought thats a hardware issue.
5. Thats why i bought an other one (used)... before buying it i made sure that the tablet will find a satelite in GPS Status... i went to the sellers house.. and it did (with wifi off). I went back home i tried again and it did... i was so happy.. i wiped my storage flashed CM13 with ElementalX again ... i opened the Nav App (Sygic)... Everything worked like a charm... i was so happy i finally have gps in my car. I visited a friend stayed there 5 hours went back home... Navi still works.
I took the tablet in my home and wanted to make a restart for some reason... After restarting , tablets gps was dead again... and still looking for a solution..
i am 100% it is a software issue. in case there is someone out there with a solution i would really appreciate it.
I'm kinda on the same boat.
My trusty Nexus 7 2013, that has been through a lot of display changes due to my clumsiness. Few days ago it decided to kick the GPS boat for reasons.
It used to work just fine, without any software tricks or anything. Used to work beautifully without wi-fi (even though I tethered from my phone, many times I travelled to places without connection) with a 8-10m precision.
Now it's spotty, taking from 2 to 280 seconds for the first fix, and precision floats between 10 and 150m (which is unbearable).
Using GPS Status & Toolbox, I can see the A-GPS does it part guiding the tablet on where are the sattelites at (I see around 22 sattelites), however the tablet has a real hard time connecting to them, most of the time staying at a solid 0 connections. My phone (Moto G5 Plus) connects within' seconds to the sattelites with pinpoint precision.
When the tablets manages to fix, it only connects to a couple (5 or 8 out of 22) sattelites, thus not so precise.
I am guessing the heat might have damaged something, but I'm not also 100% sure it ain't a software issue. I flashed the sole GPS fix, but it didn't help at all. I tried every software trick on the book, but nothing. I flashed several ROMs but it didn't make even a dent.
It seemingly gets better if I keep it connected for a good while. I tried letting it overnight with the GPS connected, and it worked fine the day after at any time (between 5 and 20m precision). However it was dead again the next day.
I couldn't find anything regarding a GPS antenna for this device, it's almost like it doesn't have one... I fiddled with the Wi-Fi antenna, which has 3 pins (one I guess is for bluetooth?), but it didn't help with GPS. Bluetooth (I use an OBD2 scanner that sends too many data per second, and I still can play music through bluetooth just fine) and Wi-Fi (Speeds and latency are optimal) are great.
I can't help but think this device doesn't have a GPS antenna, and whatever it uses for an antenna has failed or is now faulty.
Have you ever managed fixing yours?
