HUGE PM Box - About xda-developers.com

A big thank you to the people at XDA developers. I have never had to not empty my PM box, and with 1,500 PMs I can even save my own messaged (wonder why its not enabled by default).
Thanks!

You're welcome! Our servers have plenty of hard drive space, so we can always increase this limit as well.
We actually also just got a new media server, which just handles serving all the graphics and javascript (to help save bandwidth).

Probably because using file sharing sites gives devs returns in the way of providing for some rewards in the form of premium accounts/ a nominal sum from the number of downloads per file. After all, devs would need to self support themselves at least initially, unless there are generous donations.

Tapatalk=good, tapatalk spam= annoyance.

Like many people I find it annoying that the forum users posting with tapatalk often do not turrn off the default spam, "Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk" which is added in to the body of the post. This forces us to read it over and over and over and over and over and over and over....... Here is an ongoing thread about this in N1 general ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669354
A couple of solutions mentioned in that thread and elsewhere are.... make it a policy much like searching before posting to turn off the spam in settings which by default is on. Add in a divider such as you see before signatures that separates it from the body of the post so that like signatures it is easy to ignore. Many forums have not enabled it because of the annoying spam and this forum could disable support. Others?
Agree, it's very annoying spam...
What about the default signature do you dislike the most? The TapaTalk part, or just its existence in general? We may be able to change the default signature or remove it for the next version. That said, he helps to let people know that XDA has an app. I can understand that it may get annoying.
Maybe if you change the font, so it won't be confused with the rest of the message. It's important to advertise the app.
Put another line-break in and maybe a "divider" (----) to make clear it's a sig.

It's just extremely long.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
etc
It's ridiculous. Why does it need to be so long?
A) We don't need to see the device name. We can clearly see the forum they're posting in (and people usually put their device in their profile or signature anyway) so 99% of the time this information is completely useless.
B) The whole "mobile application powered by blah blah blah blah blah" is excessive. We know it's a mobile application. This entire site is about mobile devices!!!
Can you just shorten it? Something like this:
______________________
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
BOOM. Short and to the point.

+1. The problem isn't the fact it adds text, but the fact that so much of the text is unneeded. IMO it should just be shortened and possibly in a variation of the font used in the post, like bold or in a different size.
Personally Im fine with just a divider such as the short one used for signatures. To me the bothersome part is that it appears in the body of the post and I end up reading it over and over. Signatures are easy to ignore even when they are fairly gratuitus because the are outside the body of the post.

Would tend to agree with you on this one. I like your shortened version "Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App". Think this would be more appropriate
Will work on this for the next version. Hopefully within a week or two.

It would be easier if I was the author of the app-- because I could make these changes much more quickly. I'm more like the guy who convinced the Tapatalk folks to make the app for the community.
Anyway, doing my best to get this done. Thanks.
Actually, I stumbled on this thread on accident; but I like the signature the way it is, which is the reason why I left it. Yes, it's a bit long, but it's a good way to get the word out about a fantastic android application. Is it difficult to believe that people who use this application honestly don't mind giving a bit of free advertisement for amazing products?
I don't see how the sig's length is a problem. Look at almost anyone's sig that lists off the phones they've used and it'll be easily 5-10x the length of the Tapatalk sig. Maybe tweaking it to be a bit shorter, like "Via the XDA Tapatalk app - Nexus One"; but still, honestly, compared to any NORMAL signature, it's nothing.
However, it WOULD be nice to be able to set what your Tapatalk signature is manually.

for me it's no problem that a good app is promoted and I wouldn't mind it at all, even if the current length would be preserved (or extended)
what I mind is the following: the location where it is printed into the message, there is only one blank line between post and tapatalk ad and I always read it because I think it's part of the post itself, but it's not
and that's the major diff compared to sigs (independent of their size and format): though signatures are also only separated by one blank line from the post they are always preceded by "__________________"
that way they are clearly distinguished from the post, you always know what's coming next and it's up to you to read or ignore it
so why not make the ad part of the signature (e.g. as a check-box in User CP, freely configurable text/format)? I would be much more happy then
but independent of how long the text is: as long as it's part of the post I don't really like it (and that's w/o saying anything about the app)
thx

^^^ This.

.
There was an update a few days ago, the changes in that build were, "v1.3.1:- Add Signature Customization". I'm not sure if this is related to some other issue or not. If it was supposed to addrress it then it was a failure. Paul and others are correct. Get this thing out of the body of the post and its all good.
On another forum I frequent people were asking for tapatalk and they refuse to do whatever it is that they have to do to provide support for it until tapatalk changes the spam. Good call IMO. I like this forum. The knowledge base is unmatched, the moderation is good. The brilliant little widget you added up in the top corner makes getting to a different section a breeze. That was the one complaint I had before, as more and more handsets were getting added it was starting to be a chore scrolling to the sections that interested me. Pretty much all in all a well hashed out forum. I guess considering the subject matter here it isnt a surprise that the number of tapatalk users is very high. Not sure if its something that anyone would really see coming but because the number is high the number of times you get spammed is high as well. I can only ask once again, please help us out.
On a personal level I dislike this kind of in your face spamming. No matter how good tapatalk is I will never use it until they change what they have to know is an irritant to many people. Not the kind of people I want to support.
The past few days I've been looking for a way to disable these messages on my end and I figured out a way!

(The bolded folders may be different for you. If so, sort by creation date and open the latest one.)
Edit the js file with notepad. Below the line that says "im*o" : "in my honest opinion", cut/paste the following:
"Sent from my * using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk" : "[Tapatalk1]",
"Sent from my * * using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk" : "[Tapatalk2]",

"Sent from my * * * * * using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk" : "[Tapatalk5]",
"Sent from my * * * * * * using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk" : "[Tapatalk6]",
(You can of course change the "[Tapatalk6]" to whatever you want, even just two quotes "" for nothing at all. I just leave it like this because seeing the message replaced pleases me quite a bit! )
Save the file, restart your browser. The above text should be replaced.
Enjoy!

I don't so much mind seeing other people having that in their signatures. I just dislike the fact that if I personally use the XDA app, it insists on adding an annoying advertisement to the bottom of my post *without my consent*. If there could be a way to turn this off, I would greatly appreciate it.
Edit: someone didn't do a little looking around to find the option to turn it off. xD

[TIP] Storage for developers/non-developers (not spam or advertising!!)

For the mods:
I don't know if I'm posting this thread in the right section, so if it's wrong please move it! Also this thread is to help the developers and not to advertise or to spam... So please, if this is not permitted please remove this thread and I'm sorry
Okay, after pointing that out I want to share a thing I recently discovered. Many developers, especially developers with collaborative projects, are having hard times to save their stuff at an always accessible place. When you're developing with a few people it would be awesome to have a secured place only accessible for permitted users (the developers), to share stuff between the "crew" without wasting many time.
There is a very easy way to make something like that happen, for free!! But how do you do that? I will explain it to you!!
To make an online place and save/share your projects you have to go through a few steps:
First of all you have to make a free 2GB Dropbox account. Okay, 2GB is not much, but there a a few tips/tricks to get more space up to 20GB.
After you have made the account and installed the Dropbox application you can go to "Sharing" at the website.
At the "Sharing" page you see'll this explanation: Dropbox shared folders let you share or collaborate on a set of files. When someone joins a shared folder, the folder appears inside their Dropbox, and syncs to their computers automatically.
The only thing you have to do is to create a shared folder at this page and invite the users to share with. Thats the only thing you have to do to make your developing life easier. For free...
When you have done that, you are able to share files between the people you want and the other people can also share files with you!!
Thats all!! But, before you do this I'll give you a few tips to get a free account of 20GB or even more...
First of all, create an account with the given link in this post or my signature. It's a referral link wich will give you an instant extra space of 250mb. And it's gives me also a 250mb or space
Second, complete the "Getting started" list to gain an extra of 250mb. At this point you should have 2,5GB of space.
Third, go to this place and complete all the tasks: https://www.dropbox.com/free... You'll get a total of 640mb if you complete all the tasks. It are very simple tasks wich will not cost more than 2 minutes of your time...
At last, let people subscribe to Dropbox with your referall link, it will give you everytime when somebody subscribes an extra of 250mb. And there's a way to even double it. When you have an .edu mail address, you can go to https://www.dropbox.com/edu and double the space you get when a person subscribes with your referall... So you get after every subscription 500mb. Up to 16GB of space extra...
So I hope everybody can use this tip/trick and will profit from it to make their collaborated projects more organised...
Please don't see this as spam or advertising, my intention is to help people out and make their life easier
If you have more tips or tricks please tell them and I will update this post. If you like this thread please hit the "thanks" button!!
OR if you really are a developer like i am you can register here and if they think your a developer they will give you FREE premium account

Lol, yeah you guys did.
This is an awesome contribution OP, thank you.
You really are pretty new here. Definitely do your research. When someone contacts you, check out their post count, look at what types of threads they've created, and the thank meter is always a good indicator
Obviously, some developers will be easily recognizable, and won't necessarily warrant checking up on them; there will definitely be some that are good contributers, but you might not know it without looking into their work.
And some are just not trustworthy.

Websense Corporate Security XDA Listing

Hi all. Hopefully this is the right place to put this. XDA has been listed as a security threat for Proxy Avoidance under Websense.
You can file an appeal with them to get yourself removed from an erroneous listing; a different forum I moderate had a similar problem under a different category.
Anyway, I can access via mobile of course, so it's not that big of a deal, but if I ran into it, surely others will to.
Thanks for your time!
I've forwarded this to the admins, thanks.

Thank you kindly. Either their appeal went through, or someone else noticed and already reported it, because it's unblocked this morning. :good:
It looks like they have some sort of automated scanning, so it must have been mis-classified for a day. Hopefully works fine for you now!
