Underclocking question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
Just watned to ask, can't underclocking possibly damage my CPU in some way? I'd like my phone to be alive as long as possible, so I thought I could underclock it to around 700MHz and to minimum when screen off.. but won't it damage it in any way?
Thanks

No, it will not damage the CPU.
Actually, because the CPU will not get as hot as with overclocking, underclocking might extent the live of your phone.

yep thats true, also, if you are underclocking for the screen off profile, why not go right down to 245mhz? I did, and the battery life was MUCH better!
hope this helps! good luck !

Indeed. I do the same thing and this does wonders for the battery life!

yeah sleep profile of 245-245 battery life is about 12 hours better at least.

strange that. ive just uninstalled setcpu because i couldnt see any difference in battery life at all

I agree set CPU with screen off profile, so better battery all together.

Thanks guys... I've now underclocked too and I now no longer have to charge twice a day!

[Q] (Q) Overclocking and CPU damage

I'm sure there is some risk to overclocking but is there significant risk of frying the CPU if constantly running at higher speeds? Like if I have it set at 600-806 most of the time?
I really dont know. However, i have been overclocked to 824mhz for about 2 months probably. Havent noticed any issues thus far.

I set mine for when the screen is off to run at the lowest clock, and I have great battery life and no issues.

Not that I have run into, but if you set your minimum at 600 your battery life will be horrible, just do 245/844 interactive. Works great.

Odd, when I did 245/245 for screen off I actually lost a lot of battery life, I turned profiles off and set my phone to 245/844 interactive and I have better battery life than ever. I figured it had something to do with overall load being higher when the cpu can't clock up. I'm pretty sure unless it's doing something big while the screen is off it stays pretty low most of the time anyway
I don't have set cpu I have just plain overclock widget and I set mine to 480/600 mhz on start and when on stand by like 140?/180. That way it saves the battery. My phones battery life is amazing now. P.s. this overclock widget is free.

Depending on which governor you're using, setting profiles and setting the clock to 245/245 certainly would effect battery life. If you're using interactive you don't set profiles. Just min/max and leave it.

Ah, I suppose that would do it. That's what I do now, after I was getting horrible battery life I just disabled profiles entirely and now I leave it at 245/864 and it works great, normally get 10-20 hours on a charge.
I feel like my interactive govenor is broken. In the past when its on and I start clicking through the setcpu tabs the cpu would move or right when I open setcpu the cpu would be higher than the min but now its always sitting at the min I set. I ran a quadrant test with interactice on and only got low 800's but then switched it to on demand and got low 1200's. What's the deal with that?

[Q] setcpu advanced settings

does anyone use these? if so what have you set yours at? mine are sampling rate (45000), up threshold (93%), and power save bias (140). im looking for battery life from anywhere and if you could give me insight to the best settings, without much lag, id be appreciative and thank you.
Anybody?

For battery life, I'd recommend a custom kernel. If you don't want to do that, go to profiles and add one for screen off. Make it underclock to 384MHZ min and max. This saves battery a ton.

While I don't know the exact answer to your question -- I have heard that SetCPU doesn't do an incredible amount for the Incredible (no pun intended).
If you're looking for battery life, I'd probably look around (maybe Google?) for people who know how much to underclock it while the phone is not in use -- I know capping the processes really helps the battery life.

Did that and noticed some improvement, min 245 max 384. Will that make any changes?

I am actually underclocked to 883mhz on normal usage
Sent from my ADR6300 in memoriam of sakai4eva.
No, it shouldn't affect it. For the most drastic battery life saver, I would consider installing a custom ROM such as skyraider 4.0. I used my phone quite a bit today and lost only 30% battery. I do have an extended battery, but still.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
i have found the best kernel/rom combo for me that saves battery is MIUI and chad's incredikernel. with that kernel, your screen off will be 128 (versus 245) and it works extremely well. you will get a good full day of use, trust me..

Large Battery Drain on bananacake's kernel (0.4)

I'm experiencing a very big battery drain when the screen is off for a long time. I just left the phone screen off for 2 hours because I took a nap. When I woke up, the battery went from 60% to 40%. (via Juice Plotter) That was 10%, per hour, while screen off. I did not experience this from the AcesMod v35 original kernel. My SetCPU profile for screenoff was 128-345Mhz, smartass V2. Could this be the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Can i ask whats wrong with setcpu then?
A) Android manages it's CPU frequencies absolutely fine by itself.
B) By running SetCPU, it constantly needs to monitor your phone for it's state, so it can change the CPU frequency, which will just use more battery.
C) Overclocking your CPU will kill it faster.

Downclock CPU to save battery?

I`m not playing games or running CPU demanding apps, just phone calls/sms/bit of non flash web.
Is it possible to downclock CPU to increase usage(save battery)?
Or CPU doesn`t eat that much battery and downclocking would have very little effect on battery?
With a rooted device, you might want to try CPU Master Free. You will be able to decrease the clock speed.
Also, you could try to UnderVolt your CPU. Search for your phone model UV in te forums.
Min frequency is 350MHz so if your not doing anything it will be idling at 350mhz

It does help you save precious battery life.
You can download the best app for overclock, SetCpu, from the XDA site, it's free for XDA members:

How much more battery life I could get by downclocking CPU? Any feedback from people who have tried such thing?
On my gn i find the screen to be the biggest user of thr battery power so underclocking prob would have little use, ohh and iirc the phone uses race to idle which procesess overything as fast as possible to get the cpu back it low power idle state.

I normally charge my phone before go to sleep, I don't overcharging it during the night.
My SetCpu frequencies are Min 19/ 692 Max.
I am connected through 3G data ALL day and I am always online on Skype, I use my phone a lot, browsing, games, and phone call, and I can tell you, thanks to the undervolting, I got home at night with 50% juice remaining.
Without SetCpu, I would have 10/15% left at night...
yukinok25, that`s huge improvement, I`ll try it definitely.

And...this is why we all love XDA...
Remember that battery life also depends on Radio version and kernel installed.
I remember there was a topic about "How to charge your phone first time" - cannot find it any more.

If you mean after you just bought it, Its enough to let it fully discharge twice, without charging it, in between this two circles.
Anyway with nowdays Li-ion battery, you won't really need to this so anymore, since the lifespan of battery start to decrease from the moment that they left the production factory.

I would not recommend juicedefender. Doesn't do anything at all. The only thing I notice is that nu wi-fi turned itself off when it shouldn't.
You could try AutomateIt. You can set up your own actions.
Ex: Within 100 meters of school > Sound off

cpu max ghz issue

ok so i just got my GSIII and downloaded cpu gauge and cpu spy
cpu gauge shows my max cores being 1.026 each I thought this is a 1.5 dual core it should show max at 1.512.... also cpu spy shows NO activity past the 1.026 mark..
phone is fully stock i have not done anything to it yet my question is, Is the phone defective and i need to return to att?? thanks
Have you turned on power saving mode? Not sure, but that may cause it.

Yea power mode, horrible feature, barely saves battery and slows phone down. Your phones cpu throttles when it needs to use its power so it saves power that way. Im on JB AOKP and with it overclocked too 1.9ghz and throttling too 197mhz I get awesome battery life. Im sitting at 35 hours on battery with 7% left with moderate use. Thats incredible!

i use the power-saving feature a lot... i get paranoid when the battery gets below 30% and i know lithium ion batteries should never be fully discharged. the phone functions surprisingly smooth at even 1000 mhz and the decrease in speed barely even unnoticeable unless you're heavily multitasking. i also have SetCPU to underclock my peak speeds even lower for certain apps, or during various charging states, or different times of the day (evenings, weekends, work hours), and overclock for more resource-intensive apps (browser, skype, games, etc.).
try undervolting your cpu as well to have the best gain in battery life. ppl often forget the voltage part of CPU especially if you are going to overclock this puppy
