Fix: Google Voice Actions not working correctly in the UK - Desire General

I was having problems getting Google Voice Actions to work here in the UK, the actions would always come back as if I had performed a voice search. Seems the solution is to change the language:
Press Menu -> Setting -> Voice Input/Output -> Voice Recognizer Settings -> Language -? set to English (Generic)

Thank you, thank you and thank you!

It works! Hooray!

Or English US, oddly or maybe not.

its still rubbish for now. No way to get your contact into the TO field for texting, plus any sentence with more than 7 or 8 words will cause a "server error". still, Im optimistic, they will update it soon.

thanks! this is much better, still a bit dodgy, cant get it to fill in to: fields. Also, the alarm clock setting wont work, telling me i need to install the latest clock, im running CM6 RC2

Google Voice Actions - Your Experiences

How you all finding this?
It can dictate a text no problem, but doesn't seem to pick up the TO: field for me.
So if I say "send text to bob how are you" it will fill in "2 bob how are you" in the message field and leave the TO field empty. how are you getting on? It's still pretty cool. And you can say things like "call 08665242424" and it gets that perfect. Although when I say "call Joe" it just won't find the appropriate entry on my SIM card.
hey,
So far with the actions, i had a little bit of troubling getting it to call my contacts e.g. "call Paul C" an it suggests everyone else in my list with the surname C except "Paul C" also the text thing doesnt seem to work at all, but i have found it's very good at web searching and also when you have already entered the texting menu, i think once it gets the support for different countries it will be really good and fun to use.
At the minute its more of a novelty, but it could become very very useful.
We had a lot of fun earlier as what I said and what the phone thought I said was so different!
e.g.
Send a text to Teresa to say hello
=
Send a text recycle au
I did manage to get the thing to give me directions to Skegness (although I was trying to call somebody at the time).
Maybe I need to lay on an american accent and try again
But... But... But... It worked so well in the little video!
Very hit and miss for me. If it works, it works spot on 100% and great. If it fails, it fails epically.
Same here. If it works, it works, if not, well I just hope I'm not showing it off to a friend as it can make an ass of itself.
The text action? Doesn't work for me at all. Neither does setting an alarm. Getting directions is perhaps the most reliable voice action of all. Calling people is hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just doesn't complete the action. I'll say, "Call Claire XYZ Mobile", and it displays a list of 'did you mean?' options. The top one is usually right, but when I click it it Googles it as a search term!
The Alarm is still in development
the fact it requires a data connection means its learning as it goes. Recording 10000s of new words per day and linking them based by region. In time it should be able to learn words with accents etc so well that its hard to fool.
at the moment it is certainly more novelty than technological wow. but.. I think it will get there. I wish you could "teach it" by sampling your address book. I mean you click on a contacts name and then say it 5 times and the google learns how this name is pronounced in your region. then it recognizes it next time. I think they'll get there. this is a good start.
If it learns as it goes, then all those who set theory phone to US English may not be helping out develop the software for their own language if each voice request is sent out with a language tag from the phone.

How do I know what version of "voice search" I have?
I used the QR code from the google blog and and doesn't recognize some of them.
For example, it will recognize "note to self I am cool" but it will ask to do a search instead of noting to self.
It picks up very few words I say correctly. Usually "call" it always gets correct. Brilliant concept but not very practical for the masses yet.

I've found this terrible so far, 0% success rate! Even speaking in most clearest English with no background noise.
Maybe you have more success with an American accent??
But the odd thing is that the previous "search by voice" and technologies such as Translate both recognise voice really really well.
As with most of you, no success at all.. another interesting thing is set it to US English and hold it up to your speakers and play the guy from the Youtube video talking and it fails to get correct anything he says as well so I would like to know how they got 100% success rate in the video.
I have had limited success with it set to US english, one big problem is the "listen to" command, it insists that I need to install a music player, I have spotify installed (which is on the approved list) but voice action does not appear to recognise that it is there.

It is looking for the nearest psychiatrist, as it has deduced you are in urgent need thereof
Like the previous voice to text, it mainly accepts US english inflection, for the moment being.
However in my fake mafioso-US-english accent I could manage to type some emails, but I couldn't, for the hell of it, make it recognize the 'to' field most of the times. I think you really have to speak it all together "send email (no pause) to xyz (pause) how are you ?"
Too many "SERVER PROBLEM" .... not good.
OK, I've figured it out. It works and works just as accurate as in the Google vid. You just have to speak at your normal pace and the phone no more than around 6 inches away.
I can use US and UK accents to get it working. I've moved around enough to know them well.

[Q] Facebook push notification

Hi,
I used to have facebook push notification on my Galaxy S.
However, since around 1.5 weeks back - I rarely get this notification.
Facebook notification refresh setting is already set to every 30 minutes (but why is this necessary? Since it should be a "pushed" notification, isn't it?)
I've done plenty of things on the phone in the past 2 weeks (one of them is factory wipe); so I can't put my finger on when is the last time the push notification work.
Anyone got any clue?
Actually i noticed i havent been getting notifications either.
On 2.2.1 JPY.
same for me!! weird!!

I don't think I've ever had the facility to have the notifcations pushed. It probably works out in your best interests as it will probably save you more battery life and data in the long run

I think the opposite actually.
If it's not "pushed", then the apps in your phone will try to connect at certain interval to check if there's latest records.
If my understand is correct, in the past, facebook application for android, works by using the 'refresh interval'. But in Dec, the "pushed notification" is added into this apps

I used 2.2.1 and had pushed notification. My guess is that this happen only in Jan, and probably after I did the X'mas version Darky's ROM.
Do you guys think this pushed notification works based on your phone "product code" ? Flashing ROM is known to change your Product CODE.. (I think mine was changed to XOR, XEE, XSO before.. )

Yeah the app itself has settings for regular updates but I hadn't noticed a push setting previously. Can only assume FB pulled it for some reason because the ROM's themselves don't really touch any third party .apks.
Guys..
I got "pushed' notification now; but only for messages so far.
This is what I did in facebook notification settings..
Untick all Notifications (e.g. messages, friend requests, event invites) and also untick the notifications. Also set the Refresh interval to - NEVER
get out from that notification setting page.
Get back in again and this time around, ticked all notifications back .. but keep the Refresh interval to NEVER.
Using push notificatiion, so don't need to ask the Facebook apps to "poll" the servers for latest data.
once again, i'm on 2.2.1 using Darky's ROM V8.0 with latest SpeedMod Kernel (dated 13th Jan 2011).
I wasn't getting any notifications pushed either and i read somewhere (can't remember where) that you can fix it by resetting the push notifications thing (i think its called c2dm).
One way of doing this is by going into Settings > Applications > Facebook > Clear Data
Then open up facebook, enter your details and it should work (it worked for me)
sounds like when I did change the notification setting, that have the some effect as clear the data and create a new one.
got the same prob also since last two weeks.. flash every rom from stock to custom.. from 2.1 to 2.2 based.. and finally on darky 8.1.. still push notification for facebook app not popping up anymore.. but it works fine before.. can someone identify what is the source of this problem?..
Same problem here. Any ideas?
I actually do not have this problem BUT.... I can´t hear any pop sound when someone sends me a message on FaceBook....
I have gone into settings and enabled sound and everything there but I never hear any sound when I get a message
Any way to fix that?... would be SUPER sweet

Push notifications work via push service which is dependent upon "Android ID", not product code, I know that because I had problems with Kik Messenger which works with push notifications. People at Kik explained that push service is connected with unique Android ID of your device and if it changes, you will probably have problems with notifications. Android ID changes if you, for example, flash custom ROM. I was lucky enough to create complete nandroid backup when I first bought the phone. Kik didn't work properly on Darky's (or any other custom rom) so what I did was: restored my original ROM, installed Android ID changer from market, wrote down my ID, flashed Darky's again, installed Android ID changer again and restored my original ID.
Now push service works like a charm
Hope it helps...

on facebook desktop website, in the top right corner click "account" > "Account settings" > "mobile" (a tab).
The sms contains the content of the notification (altho can be cut short if too long) and depending on the context, a url to the mobile website.
EDIT: oops, looks like iceland isn't on the dropdown list... (probably no carriers in your country support the function ) Many other countries do though :S
I use F plus (flow) now.
Might not be push, but at least I get them now, which is more than the facebook app did ever did.

No matter what settings I use on facebook they always revert to default after not using the app for a while.
Any ideas?
anyone find a solution to this yet? sorry for bumping a old thread but it's driving me nuts not being able to check notifications on facebook!

For Those Having Problems on GVoice

Seeing the "similar threads we found", I see that I'm not the only one having this issue and we're not the only phone having problems.
Turns out there's a known issue on Google Voice where if the customer adds a line, subtracts a line or screws with their service in any way that requires an activation of the line that's on Google Voice (like an upgrade...yknow like we all did ), that Google Voice can fizzle out. Basically, it automatically unchecks the box that says "this phone can receive texts" which prevents your phone from receiving texts. This also changes the setting on the phone app to route texts through your stock messages app again. This will step-by-step you into changing them back.
Well I got mine working again, and I'd like to share how I did it so maybe it'll work for you.
**NOTICE**
This is for one line on Google Voice only. Apparently this won't work if you have multiple phones attached to the same Google account.
Okay:
1. open up your web browser and go to: voice.google.com. Then open up google voice on your phone.
2. in the browser, click your phone number (top right corner). A menu will pop up and you'll notice the "this phone receives text messages" (or however it's written) is unchecked. That's the bug, it'll uncheck itself every time you go to that screen. Also, when this box becomes unchecked, it actually changes a setting in the Google Voice app on your phone to route texts through the stock messaging app again (annoying).
3. Check that box so that it's one (don't close out of the browser yet, leave it on that screen)
4. Then, in your google voice app on the phone, go to menu > more > settings > notifications and sync where there's a drop down menu specifying whether you want messages received by the messages app or GVoice. choose which one you want (i'm assuming if you're here, you use GVoice). This is the setting I mentioned that it changes in the app (all the way back in step 2).
5. Now you should still have GVoice open in your browser. If not, you follow directions badly and need to repeat the process. If yes, you should have the unchecked box checked (when it wasn't before) and the setting on the phone app itself changed back to normal.
6. While the browser is open, have a few people text you. You should now be getting texts and voicemails delivered to your GVoice account again. This isn't necessary, but to test to make sure you did it right.
Last: once you re-establish that "connection" close the browser and never go back to that options page again (it'll just un-check that box and change that setting on the phone and make you do this all over again). Now your GVoice should be working properly.
*addendum*
If you're still have trouble after this. Go back to the options page where you started, check the box, then uninstall/re-install Gvoice on your phone and go through the set up again...then continue following the steps.
*addendum 2*
If this fails, then disable GVoice services with Sprint and set them up anew using the app on your phone (like you did the first time).
Don't worry about the "can't do whatever", just hit "skip".
Then follow the steps above.
Hope this helps, I know us GVoice users are minority but hey we need people to figure crap out too

I have tried these steps and nothing works..If i change the setting in the app to use the google voice app for receiving text it automatically un checks the box online in the google voice settings. When I recheck the box online the app reverts back to using the stock app for messaging in the goggle voice app. quite pissed off about it but i'm still receiving calls from my google voice number so I guess I will live with it until its figured out.

here's the essential part:
Check the box, but leave the browser window open so you can see it.
save the setting for using GVoice but leave the settings open so you can see it.
Then open a new browser window and text someone using the browser interface in a separate tab. I use Google Chrome and have the GVoice extension so I didn't need to do that.
The idea to get texts moving back and forth while both are checked without leaving so they can't uncheck (which they won't do if you stay in the windows).
Once you get the flow of traffic going, then leave those settings windows and never, ever go back to them. It's a cheap fix and a house of cards of sorts (i've accidentally undone my own work twice), but it does work.
Ok..this is what I discovered for me. I have an Evo3D flashed to boost and I have the same google voice number going to it as I do the touch. I was looking at my settings online and suddenly the box for receiving text to the 3D was unchecked so I rechecked it. Well when I did that my messages started going through the stock messaging app on the 3D . So I decided to uncheck both my Touch and my 3d in the settings online to receive text and now I'm getting my text back through the google app. This makes no sense but its working right now.

I suspect it'll be fixed in the next update or two.
If you didn't mind going through the WHOLE set up process again, you could find and download an older apk and just go back to a bug-free version. I have a transparent themed one and an inverted one from before the latest update and they worked fine before I updated it (ever since, they are screwed up).

Is there anything a can do to train Google now voice

In general the voice recognition is good but there are a full words it always gets wrong e.g. it wont get my wifes name right so I can't voice call her. Is there a way of training google now to get this right? I have set the langauge to my country and this helped alot with other words and locations but just doesn't get them all.
Any help here or am I stuck with only the options google think I said?

I second this, My wifes name is not recognised and I have tried adding a phonetic name ( tho it then displays this as the contact name :/ ) even downloading the language pack for the country her name is from! nothing! so annoying. this must be a common problem? but theres no posts about it, this makes me think that I'm thick and can't find something that most people think is obvious. tried adding a nick name of 'the wife' which google voice would hear correctly but only do a web search??? fortunately I have an S3 and S-voice will recognise the name but I was hoping to switch.
btw running 4.1 omega rom on S3 and changing my wifes name to Donna via Deed poll...
Same Here
There must not be a solution to this, which is very disappointing. The new voice recognition is cheap for voice calling, especially since my wife is the primary one that I call. :-\
I'm guessing no one found a resolution for this, because I am having the exact same problem.
Save you wife as 'wife', e.g. 'phone wife'
Job done!

Try going to Settings/Language & Input/Voice Search then tick the box for Personalized recognition.
Try saying "launch utter"
The utter app is way more responsive, if you can get over the fugliness...

Question How do I change this pop up setting?

I want the messages to stop appearing on the screen when I receive them. I try to change from here, but nothing opens to choose another option. I also reset in the developer menu but nothing changes. After many years on Samsung, it seems to me that everything is messed up here. Thank you
I assume you mean with the google messages app. Not many options in the app but if you long press the icon and choose app info -> notifications -> additional settings -> bubbles there is an option for "nothing can bubble". Try that.
I don't use the google app or have the phone on a sim yet, so I can't verify. Please report back if it works.

Thanks for the reply. It is correct what you say and that is how it should be. I know I have to walk here BUT I CAN'T. The phone (software) doesn't let me choose anything else when I press "importance"! Do not open other options! Not to show anything in the balloon was already activated. I've had the phone for 6 days and as much as I like how it looks (the only reason I bought it) the software is a joke. I am totally disappointed. I am seriously thinking of returning it. Apart from the cameras, I really consider it successful. But the software is bad.
I tried to change the setting to only one person, but it still doesn't work.
Sorry for bad english ! Google translate.
I installed and tried another messaging application from the PlayStore and I was able to set other notifications! The default application (from google) does not allow you to set other priorities.
Disappointing!
